Officials address park field rumors BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Crossroads Regional Park Director Ray Holloway is playing some defense. As the park expansion nears completion, talk is circulating

that the new ball fields do not meet certain specifications that would be required to attract “travel ball.” He says it is simply not true. Field dimensions and the use of portable fencing and portable

pitching mounds are some of the items in question. The park is affiliated with the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) for baseball, and its director for West Tennessee and Mississippi, Scotty Baker,

said there are “absolutely no issues” with the portable fencing and mounds. “We have parks all over the two states I cover that are using those,” he said. Field dimensions are largely

Corinth leaders are planning to keep the property tax rate level as the budget for the upcoming fiscal year begins to take shape. A public hearing on Corinth’s proposed budget and tax levy will be held at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6, coinciding with a regular meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The current tax rate, including the school tax, is 95 mills. The school district is requesting no change. In its first work session on the FY 2017 budget Tuesday morning, the board reviewed the outside agency requests and, in a closed session, discussed some individual pay rates. Funding for the park is likely to remain at the statutory maximum of 2 mills. The park requested an increase of about $146,000. Among the outside agencies, the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter will likely get level funding of $70,000, but the board wants to examine the contract with the organization because of some concerns about animals not being accepted. The Northeast Mississippi

City Clerk Chapter of the American Red Cross is likely to return to zero funding because the chapter did not maintain a presence at an office that was set aside for it on the second floor at City Hall. The chapter was put in the current budget at up to $250 monthly to cover the phone bill, and the chapter planned to use volunteers to re-establish a Corinth presence. The city has tied financial support for the chapter to a requirement that it have a Corinth office. After seeing a bump to $20,000 for a couple of years during work on the green space at Wick and Franklin, Main Street Corinth may take a modest cut from $17,500 to Please see BUDGET | 2A

“I came here to retire, but I’m still figuring on when it’s going to happen,” said Larry Mangus, who moved to Corinth nine years ago, following his retirement from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio. Mangus’ retirement has been far from sedate. The 75-year-old Civil War historian and collector is active in a plethora of local groups. Mangus also loves talking about the Civil War, especially to local students. He often visits area schools in full wartime regalia, artifacts in hand — an enthusiastic missionary for the love of history. “They are so much fun to talk to,” said Mangus. “It’s amazing. When you show them this stuff, it makes such an impact on them.” He is an elder at First Presbyterian Church. Mangus and wife Marilyn have two sons: David, a molecular biologist; and Mike, a historian at Ohio State.

“There is no statute in Tennessee that allows a beer referendum. You can hold one for wine or liquor, but not beer. It is up to the town’s commissioners whether they allow beer sales or not.”
