Officials arrest 2 men for murder BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com
More details area emerging from the investigation into Saturday’s fatal shooting of 44-year-old Kossuth resident Scotty Settlemires. Two Corinth men have been charged in the shooting death of Settlemires, 19-year-old Kenji D. Harris of Gaines Road and 21-year-old Eareon Q. Williams of Sawyer Road. Becky L. Krech, 34, of Miller Road, Corinth, faces a charge of accessory after the fact. The three were arrested separately Saturday afternoon by Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office officers, with assistance from the Corinth Police Department and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, according to a statement made by Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell following the trio’s arraignment hearing in court on
Tuesday. Investigators say Harris and Williams were driven by Krech to Settlemires’ house at 812 County Road 600 sometime on Saturday. “We do know the two male subjects were at the residence, driven there by Krech,” said Caldwell. “We do know they went into the residence. At some point an argument occurred. We’re still looking to determine how many shots were fired and by whom.” At least two of the shots hit Please see MURDER | 2A Staff photo by Bobby J. Smith

County fire districts expand Bond restructure should ease deficit BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Some county fire districts are expanding to ensure full coverage. Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens said a few spots have been identified where houses had slipped through the cracks of the legally defined districts. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the expansion of Kossuth’s coverage to a 5-mile area; Union Center-Theo’s coverage from 4 miles to 5 miles; Rienzi’s coverage from 1 square mile to 5 miles; and Farmington’s area from 4.5 miles to 5 miles. It will help the affected homeowners get better insurance rates. In Union Center-Theo, for example, “You’ve got several
households out there that right now instead of getting a class 8 are getting a class 10,” said Gibens. “It’s going to lower their insurance by a substantial amount of money.” A proposal for a new district south of Kossuth is pending. Gibens presented signatures from a number of residents of the area. In other business before the board: • Supervisors approved Corinth-Alcorn Parks & Recreation’s request for contingency funds from the park expansion totaling $36,980.52 for the purchase of items for the new ball fields — three soccer goals, five backstop paddings, windscreens, portable fencing, portable pitcher’s mounds, dugout benches and an ice machine. • The board passed resolu-
tions needed for several drainage projects to be completed by the Tombigbee River Valley Water Management District. The work includes bank stabilization on County Road 109, replacing a culvert with a bridge on County Road 257 and cleaning of a tributary of the Hatchie River and road ditches in the Road 560 area. The road ditches have silted in, resulting in flooding, said Sandy Mitchell, district clerk with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. • The board accepted Parson Earthworks bid of $477,705.06 for several county road projects including reseal, fog seal and striping on Kendrick Road, among others. • The board reappointed Jane Summers to the Crossroads Arena Board of Directors.
FUEL resumes mission BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com
KOSSUTH — Back to school means back to FUEL. The FUEL program — a Christian-based after-school program for community kids — resumes its mission Wednesday. Held in the Christian Life Center at Kossuth United Methodist Church, the program begins at 3 p.m. every Wednesday during the school year. “The mission is to show the love of God to every child who enters our doors,” said program director Anthia Follin-King. The after-school program provides a hot meal, school supplies, one-on-one reading, structured Christian music and play time for its young participants. “It truly is a great bridge be-

With a resolution adopted Tuesday, the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors is headed toward a bond restructuring designed to help ease the deficit tied to the justice center. “This is the first major step to get us back in a position where we’re not running a deficit every year,” said Chancery Clerk Greg Younger. The board adopted a resolution setting forth the parameters and the offering documents that will go out into the market as the county separates the government offices portion of the complex into a separate general
obligation bond. The closing is expected to happen in October or November. “The maturity can be pushed out longer than what the current inmate agreement is,” said Buddy Critchfield of DuncanWilliams, the firm that underwrote the 2009 bond issue. “We actually scheduled that to where the annual debt service for that portion is very similar to the deficiency y’all were running on an annual basis.” The correctional facility portion will retain the original maturity date, and the inmate housing reimbursements paid Please see BOND | 2A

tween church and school,” said Kossuth United Methodist Church Pastor Mark Nail. “The school teaches them the ABCs, math and science, and we simply teach the kids about God.” Nail emphasized that the program is open to anyone who wants to learn. “It’s a great link to school because we provide time for kids to do their homework and get help if they need or want it,” said Nail. “It is a link to church by having Bible stories and songs.” Founded in 2008, FUEL (Forever, Unending, Eternal Love) is a local missionary program provided by the church and caring individuals throughout the area.
