The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors adopted a budget and tax levy Thursday morning that is hoped to see the county moving into a better financial situation. The board also adopted the tax levy, which holds at a total of 116.21 with school taxes included for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. The tax rate had risen in the two prior years. While it is unchanged in the new budget, some residents will pay more ad valorem tax because of the recently completed property reappraisal. The board formally accepted the land roll earlier this week following the tax equalization hearing, which had no public comments. Total assessed value is rising a little more than $20 million. The tax levy is projected to bring in $9.658 million, rising from $9.124 in the current budget. The county is projecting it will be able to end FY 2018 with a reserve of approximately $465,000. The school district levy holds at 52.76 mills, and the county operations levies total 63.45 mills. General county millage rises from 32.57 to 32.9 as a few other levies decrease by small amounts.

The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting of a male subject in the foot Thursday afternoon. Sheriff Ben Caldwell said it happened about 4 p.m. on County Road 615 in the Pleasant Hill community near Kossuth. “At this time it appears to be a domestic situation,” said Caldwell. “An individual was struck in the foot by one round. We believe there was only one round fired. We do have an individual in custody at this time.” The identity of the subjects was withheld pending further investigation and possible charges. The shooting call came in immediately after the head-on collision involving a school bus. Caldwell said he was heading to the wreck and then diverted to the shooting call.

Peck excited about Alcorn fair performance BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country music singer Danielle Peck said she is excited to come to Corinth to perform at the Alcorn County Fair. The singer said she has friends in the Crossroads area and has wanted to visit Corinth for a couple of years. She is excited to finally have the opportunity. Peck will headline the final day of the fair. She’ll take the outdoor Crossroads Arena fairgrounds stage at 9 p.m. Saturday night. BlackTop 45 will open for Peck at 7 p.m. The Northeast Mississippi group will perform a collection of covers and original songs of their fused Christian, Country sound. Singer, song writer Peck is probably best known for hits like “I Don’t,” “Findin’ a Good Man,” and “Isn’t that Everything.” Music has always been a part of her life. She was born in Jacksonville, N.C., but was
raised in Coshocton, Ohio. She said there was musical ability on both sides of her family. They sang and played instruments and she said it was very common within her family, but she learned when she went to school that it wasn’t common at all. The kids at school grouped into cliques of students who participated in baseball, football or cheerleading. She stood alone in her interests. “No one had the passion for music like I did ... I felt like a loner and that no one understood me until I started coming to Nashville,” said Peck. She said she began visiting Nashville at about the age of 15 and she felt like she had found where she “belonged.” She ended up finally moving to Nash-
ville in 2001, but before then she toured up and down the east coast with a band. Her dad did the sound board and her younger brother played bass. She said they had a bus that broke down in just about every state. “That’s when I found out that I loved it. We did fairs and festivals ... I would do a lot of covers ... I would be like a jukebox,” said Peck, as she described taking music requests. However, she got to a point where she wanted to do her own songs. “I started to put a few of my own songs out there and trying them out before the crowds,” she said. Her music was well enough received that in 2001, she said “a clock inside of her went off” and she knew it was time to take the leap of faith and move to Nashville. She rented a room in a house were she had to share a bathroom. She waited tables to support herself and found that
