Remembering Dr. Stroup Corinth schools

seek ACT gains BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A push to boost ACT scores is showing some progress for the Corinth School District. In their meeting last week, members of the board of trustees reviewed recent data from the college entrance exam, along with other assessment data. “Our students are working hard,” said Superintendent Lee Childress. Some are participating in extra instruction during “zero period” before the school day starts, and the district is no longer allowing seniors to avoid taking a math class. ACT results across the state have been affected by the state’s move to universal testing of 11th-graders. In the 2015-2016

school year, the number of Mississippi students meeting the benchmark scores in each of the ACT’s four components rose slightly to 11 percent from 9 percent in the prior year, when all 11th-graders were first tested. ACT established the benchmark scores to indicate a student has a 50 percent chance of obtaining a “B” or higher in the course or a 75 percent chance of obtaining a “C” or higher. The benchmark scores are 18 for English, 22 for math, 22 for reading and 23 for science. Corinth had 59 percent meet the English benchmark, compared to 61 percent nationally; 29 percent in math (41 percent nationally); 31 percent in readPlease see ACT | 5

Day proclaimed for American Legion BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Mayor Tommy Irwin recently presented a community proclamation to members of Corinth’s American Legion Post 6, SAL and Auxiliary. “We are grateful to have the Legion in our town,” said Irwin. “The veterans and volunteers are to be commended for their work and the selfless way they serve.” Given to officers of the local chapters during a meeting at City Hall on Friday, the proclamation designated Sept. 16, 2016 as “The American Legion Day.” The proclamation ceremony

Alcorn County school librarians are learning all about the district’s upgraded library computer system. District librarians attended a day-long session at Kossuth High School to learn the new Book Systems library system. The upgrade is a cloud-based system that allows users to log in from any location. “The old system you could only access from here in the library,” said Rose Seaborn, the technology coordinator for the Alcorn School District. “The new system, being cloud based,

means parents and students can log in from home to reserve and check out books.” The new system also includes an offline circulation tool that will allow the libraries to continue accessing their records in the event of an Internet outage. Another benefit to the new system is that it can integrate the material from state standards and Common Core. “The teachers can search for material that ties in with the state standard and find books that tie in with what they’re covering in class,” explained Please see UPGRADES | 2

Lifelong Crossroads area resident Vickie Roach has worked for the City of Corinth for 28 years and has served as city clerk since 2003. “It’s a great honor to serve the community,” she said. “God has tasked us to be the servants of humanity. In anything I do, I try to keep that philosophy and attitude. I have to give the credit where it’s due. Who I am is not of my making; it is of my creator’s making.” Roach is a member of New Lebanon Free Will Baptist Church, where she is active in Children’s Church. She has been married to Sammy Roach for 39 years. They have two sons, Jamie and Michael, and three grandchildren, Ava, 5, Landon, 2, and eightmonth-old Liam. “They are the joy of my life,” she said.
