Traffic signal to return on Harper Road BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County is moving toward putting the traffic signal at the intersection of South Harper Road, Getwell Road and

Legacy Drive back into service. Caterpillar, which now occupies the former Tecumseh building, is requesting the light return to use for the safety of employees exiting onto the

busy South Harper Road. Although it was initially used as a fully functioning traffic light when Tecumseh was active, it has been used only as a flashing caution light for a number

of years. The Board of Supervisors accepted a bid this week from DeSoto County Electric of approximately $10,000 for repairs and work needed to put the sig-

nal back into service. Caterpillar is expected to reimburse the county for the expense. With a couple of months Please see SIGNAL | 2A

Homecoming festivities set BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Warrior spirit is in high gear. It’s homecoming week for Corinth High School as the team prepares for their Friday night contest with the Kossuth High School Aggies. “Corinth High School homecoming traditions are second to none,” said Corinth School District Marketing Director Taylor Coombs. “All Thursday and Friday activities circle around showing love for our Warriors.” The festivities schedule is jam packed on Friday, according to Coombs. “It’s Spirit Day and students are encouraged to wear Warrior colors or their homecoming shirts,” she said. “We have a pep rally and presentation of the Homecoming Court at 9:45 a.m. in the gym. This should help fire up the kids for the big game.” The high school will also play host to Corinth Elementary School kindergarteners during the morning pep rally. “We’re super excited about the Tailgate event, as well,” said Coombs. At 5:30 p.m. on Friday, CHS will host a Homecoming Tailgate in front of the Harper Road school. “It’s great, free family fun,”

Alec (Sandy) McCommon of Collierville, Tennessee, was the guest speaker at Tuesday’s Col. W.P. Rogers Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting held at Martha’s Menu.

History comes alive at meeting BY LISA TIERNAN For the Daily Corinthian

Country music artist Darryl Worley of Savannah, Tenn. wrote, “Shiloh,” a song about the bloody battle fought between the north and the south that began on April 6, 1862 and ended on April 7, leaving 23,746 casualties and every home within a hundred miles of the Shiloh battlefield a hospital for wounded or dying soldiers. Throughout the song, written as he stood at Shiloh and imagined the gruesome battle

scenes, Worley sang the refrain, “Standing in the presence of the past.” While Worley’s song was paying homage to the historic battle, he could have been singing that particular refrain about the scene on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, when some 150 people gathered in the basement of Martha’s Menu in Corinth, Mississippi to hear Alec (Sandy) McCommon’s presentation on the Battle of Shiloh during the monthly meeting of the Col. W.P. Rogers Sons of Confeder-

ate Veterans. McCommon, principal of Leadership by Design, resides in Collierville, Tenn. and is a volunteer at the Shiloh National Military Park. He serves as a board member on the Friends of Shiloh National Military Park, and has traveled extensively, teaching at universities and helping to build and train leadership teams around the world. “All Thursday and Friday activities circle around showing love for our Warriors.” Taylor Coombs Corinth School District marketing director she said. “Anyone can setup tents – we invite everyone to come celebrate our homecoming.” Coombs said the tailgate will feature music, inflatables for the kids and Zaxby’s food. Both CHS and KHS bands will perform their halftime show following the tailgate and prior to the start of the game at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. “I love homecoming week,” added Coombs. “I look forward to it every year. To be playing Kossuth is awesome as well. Playing our neighbor for homecoming adds a little something extra to the entire week.” The school kicked off the two-day celebration on Thursday with its annual homecoming parade and pep rally on court-square.
