Grand event seeks volunteers Three nights of music BY BOBBY J. SMITH bsmith@dailycorinthian.com
The call is out for volunteers to help with the Grand Illumination — a showpiece event for local history and business that returns in November after a four-year hiatus. The Grand Illumination involves placing 12,000 brightly-lit “luminaries” around Corinth, including at the site of Battery Robinett at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and a path that will highlight Corinth’s antebellum homes, the Contraband Camp, the historic railroad crossing and the downtown business district. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the luminary bags from now until the day of the event — Nov. 5 — when they will be needed to put them out on the streets and at the Interpretive Center. The return of the event ties in with the celebration of the
100th anniversary of the National Park Service. “We really need the help of the community to pull off the event,” said Park Ranger Ashley Berry. “Without community support to come out and help with these bags, we can’t pull off this event.” At least 3,000 of the luminaries need to be constructed each week, and that groups of 15 to 20 are the perfect size, according Grand Illumination committee member and Corinth Tourism Director Christy Burns. Burns underlined the importance of the event to local tourism. “It’s a community event, and the more the community is involved the better it can be,” she said. “It’s being advertised three hours out in our driving market. We’re having the visitors coming. We want them to be pleased with our event. There’s going to
be a lot of people in our town, and we want to make sure they have a good time.” Volunteers are needed to help with the luminaries on Mondays and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hours can be adjusted in October during the Corinth School District break. The Grand Illumination has been named a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society over the years. It is the lighting of 12,000 luminaries in memory of soldiers from both sides of the conflict who died in Corinth in April of 1862 during the Siege of Corinth and in October 1862 during the Battle of Corinth. To volunteer contact Taylor Coombs of the Corinth School District at 287-2425; the Alcorn School District’s Tammy Johnson at 286-3202; Andrea Rose at the Alliance at 2875269; or the CACVB’s Christy Burns at 287-8300.
