Tourism approves nearly $79K in grants BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors approved $78,900 in grant requests for their new fiscal year. During a meeting held Wednesday afternoon, the board approved $125,000 to be set aside specifically for grant requests. The board reviewed several requests and approved $1,900 for the Civil War Relic

Show (based on hotel rooms), a $1,000 Maestro level sponsorship for the Corinth Symphony Orchestra, $12,000 for the Verandah-Curlee marketing budget, $23,000 for the Corinth Area Arts Council, $6,500 for the Gospel Tabernacle Power Conference (based on hotel rooms), $1,000 for the Chili Cook Off (based on hotel rooms), $12,000 for the Lighthouse Thanksgiving Classic (based on hotel rooms), a $1,000 foundation member-

ship for the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery, $12,000 for the Alcorn County Fair, $5,000 for the rodeo (based on hotel rooms) and $3,500 for the Crossroads Marching Classic. A funding request for Main Street was tabled pending discussion and the need for more information. The board also discussed the need for final results from Berkeley Young of Young Strategies before finalizing the CACVB’s 2018 budget. Christy Burns, CACVB ex-

ecutive director, said they have received some initial results of the study, but would need the full results. “We need this to know how to spend the taxpayers dollars wisely. Our job is to do our best to bring people to Corinth,” said Burns. Board member Laura Albright echoed this sentiment saying they had chosen the experts and needed to heed their advice to be good stewards of the money.

Board members, as well as Burns, indicated there would be some future adjustments in regard to grant requests. In other business, Kenneth Williams made a presentation to the board regarding a revamp of the downtown walking trail. He provided a sample brochure and made suggestions, such as plaques and brochures pointing out sites of historical interest and other ways to make the most of the trail as a downtown attraction.

The approval of eight early high school graduates were briefly halted at a recent county school board meeting. Alcorn School District Board of Education member Ann Little questioned how early graduates affect the district’s attendance and dollar amounts received from the state for each student. Superintendent Larry B. Mitchell said such movement in enrollment did atler funding, but did not give details. “The students want it and the parents have signed off on it and the principals have okayed it,” said board member Ricky Fields. “I can’t see how we can say ‘no’ to a child trying to further their education. This is a good thing.” The motion passed with Little Please see BOARD | 2A
