Family escapes house fire BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

FARMINGTON — A Farmington family escaped a large house fire Monday evening. The blaze was reported at 6:12 p.m. in the Honey Creek subdivision at 34 County Road 230.

Farmington Fire Chief Jeremy Childers said the blaze was engulfing the house when firefighters arrived, preventing an interior attack. It was concentrated on the back side of the house and caused heavy fire damage to the first and second floors and attic.

The cause of the fire is not known. The residents were able to exit the home without injury. With the prevailing dry conditions, a major concern was the potential for the fire to spread. A burn ban continues for Alcorn County and much of the region.

Childers expressed appreciation for backup from the Glen and Biggersville departments. Free smoke detectors and a fire inspection are currently available to eligible residents by contacting Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens at 286-7737.

Motorists are urged to be extra cautious at the South Harper Road roundabout as the landscaping project begins. Work launched Tuesday morning, and most of the job will be done between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon each day. Plants will begin to go in next week after some ground work this week. “It’s kind of a blank canvas that’s been sitting there for a while, and it’s nice that we’re going to add a little splash of color to that intersection, especially with the new park addition,” said Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful Director Andrea Rose. “I think it’s a really good place for this investment in the community.” The work is being performed by Archer Landscape and volunteers with Lowe’s and is scheduled to wrap up by Oct. 20, before Corinth students who are currently out for three weeks return to school. “We remind people that when you enter the roundabout, you have the right of way all the way around,” said Rose. “Please
