More than $400,000 in funding is currently in review before being awarded to the Alcorn School District. The money is part of E-Rate federal dollars to help fund

tions for school-to-school connections, the network backbone and Internet. AT&T will provide the service. In other board news: • The school board recently approved a resolution to declare the necessity for the issuance of

state general obligation bonds to assist the district in paying costs associated with providing lighting for district baseball fields and related facilities. “This is required from what Please see FUNDING | 2

Once at the maze entrance, they must navigate the corn challenge to enter a small town. “I love it that we can offer the community an amazing fun town,” said Chateau Manager Anthony Knight. “We still have work to do, but pretty soon we will have some bands performing on

Oakland Baptist Church Pastor Dr. Randy Bostick will have the opportunity to preach at one of the region’s largest congregations this Sunday night. If you are a Baptist preacher getting to preach in the pulpit at Bellevue Baptist Church then you know that you have reached the pinnacle for your profession. A baseball player wants to play at Yankees Stadium, a mu- Bostick sician wants to sing at Carnegie Hall, or a pro football player wants to play at Lambeau Field. Those legendary places are comparable to a Southern Baptist minister getting to preach at Bellevue. Bostick will get to live a dream of preaching there Sunday night. He will preach and the talented Oakland Baptist Choir will sing prior to Bostick’s sermon. The worship service will begin at 6 p.m. “While it is a great honor to

Abbey McCasland digs into the fun at The Colonel Corn’s Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch in Stantonville.

Maize maze creates amazing fun This story by Steve Beavers originally appeared in the Independent-Appeal and is reprinted here with permission. STANTONVILLE — Colonel Corn has cultivated a crop full of fun. The Colonel Corn’s Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch – which opened Oct. 1 – provides a mountain of activity over 10 acres. “It gets back to our roots of old-style family fun,” said

Chris Howard. Howard is partners with owners Sammy and Sherry Kiser in the project. People were lined up and ready to tour the maze and town on Oct. 6 as part of the McNairy County Chamber Night. The first 100 visitors received a free hot dog and drink on Chamber Night. “People really like the family atmosphere,” said Howard. Individuals are transport-

Veteran firefighter does what he loves BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

IUKA — A 27-year veteran of the Iuka Fire Department, Brian Grissom has a passion for firefighting. “I’ve been intrigued by this line of work for as long as I can remember. Even as a little boy I loved the sirens and lights that characterized the fire service,” said the Iuka native. “I loved the local Christmas parades too, and was always excited to see the fire truck and the forestry truck with the fire dozer

and Smoky the Bear.” He likes to tell the story of his “ambulance-chasing” father. “When I was growing up in the Eastport and Snowdown Road areas, if a fire truck, ambulance or police car ever went past our house, my daddy was always going to follow to see if he could help in any way,” said Grissom. “Most of the time I’d jump in the vehicle and go, too.” After graduating high school and getting married, Grissom went to work

at Ripley Industries in Iuka where he became friends with Mike Murrah. Murrah, a volunteer firefighter, soon introduced the young Grissom to a world he’d always loved. “I joined in late 1989 and got my first taste of fighting a fire shortly after that,” he said. In 1991, he was hired as a full-time firefighter for the Iuka Fire Department and soon became the first state certified firefighter in Staff photo by Zack Steen
