School board candidates share goal BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
(This is the first in a three-part series featuring Alcorn School District Board of Education candidates. Third district candidates will be presented on Sunday, second district on Wednesday and first district on Friday. Election Day is Nov. 8.) A better education for all students
is a shared goal of all three candidates running for the third district seat on the Alcorn School District Board of Education. The third district race includes Daniel Cooper, Keith Stevens and Lamar Walker. Cooper, a Biggersville resident, said he’ll bring a common sense approach to the board when dealing with stu-
dent education. “A big concern of mine is our district’s lack of school books – there are some students in classrooms in this district who are having to share text books. That’s a problem,” he said. “I would really like to see the district tackle more grants. Not just apply, but Please see CANDIDATES | 2A

The Kossuth High School Band has racked up another top-five finish in the state marching band championship. The Aggie Band placed fifth in the state championship, held Saturday, Oct. 22, at Pearl River High School. “This is the fifth time in six years we’ve been in the top five,” said Kossuth Band Director Brandon Harville. To be eligible to compete in the state championship competition the Aggie band had to make superior ratings at the regional event, held Oct. 8 in Tupelo. Kossuth’s marching band takes top-five state finish a musical warm up followed by the competition on the field. This year the Kossuth Band’s theme was “Antagonist” — feature pieces of music associated with villains in film or theatre, including “The Imperial March” from the Star Wars series. “The kids really enjoy playing that one,” said Harville. “This is the first time we’ve done a dark show, focusing on the villains. They’ve really enjoyed that.” Harville said the Kossuth Band members are anxious to return to the top three, where the band finished last year, and looking ahead to future competitions. “They’re anxious to do even better next year when we go back,” Harville said.

Frank Berry, the owner of Berry’s Trading Post, has been in the gun, coin and jewelry business since he was 12 years old. “This is what I’ve always liked to do. Born and raised in Alcorn County, Berry is an avid collector of antique Derringers, Bowie knives and dueling pistols. “I’ve always been interested in them all of my life,” he said.
