Two injured in inmate van collision BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

Two inmates were injured when a van transporting them from the courthouse to the county jail was struck by an-

other vehicle Thursday afternoon. The van was traveling southbound on Cass Street when a 2013 Nissan driven by a female juvenile came off of Wick

Street and collided with the passenger side of the van, said Corinth Police Department Captain Mark Luker. Sheriff Ben Caldwell said seven inmates were being

transported in the van. Luker said two of the inmates were taken by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Nissan said she had pain

but was not transported by ambulance. Caldwell said another van was sent to the scene and returned the uninjured inmates to the jail.

Two heavily involved booster club parents have thrown their hat into the race for the first district seat on the Alcorn School District Board of Education. Those in the race include April Smith Burns and Ricky Fields. Smith said if elected, she wants to see students get more technology in the classroom. “We have smart kids in our district, but we don’t have the tools needed to compete with other schools,” she said. “We

Child shows birthday generosity BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

A true inspiration to others, Lane Bryant learned at an early age that it is better to give than it is to receive. Measuring a mere 121/2 inches in length, the son of James and Jamie Bryant (who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of 3) weighed only a

pound and 10 ounces when he made his debut into the world. “He was born at 25 weeks and the doctors didn’t give him a chance to live, but he did,” said Jamie as she kept a watchful eye over her son. “He’s our miracle.” Paying it forward, Lane has spent every birthday showing others the same love he has re-

ceived from the community. In prior years he has collected coloring books and crayons for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, money for Havis’ Kids, toys for Shriners Children’s Hospital in Shreveport, La. and Le Bonheur Children’s hospital in Memphis. Please see LANE | 2A

The Grand Illumination — a showpiece event for local history and businesses — returns this weekend for the first time in four years. The Grand Illumination, which ties in with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service this year, involves placing 12,000 brightly-lit
