Officials expect huge election day BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Alcorn County election officials are expecting a big voter turnout next week. Saturday marked the final day of absentee voting ahead of Tuesday’s election, and Deputy Clerk Crystal Starling said the numbers are record breaking.

“This will most likely be our biggest voter turnout we have ever had.” Crystal Starling Alcorn County Circuit Court Deputy Clerk “This will most likely be our biggest voter turnout we have

ever had,” she said. “We will probably break the record for

absentees.” As of late Friday afternoon almost 1,420 absentee votes had been cast in Alcorn County. With a little over half a day remaining, Starling said the total number would likely bypass the 2012 contest where the office received 1,434 absentees. The same can’t be said across

the state as absentee voting has been “disappointingly down” according to Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. This year’s lower absentee numbers could forecast a statewide turnout of about 800,000. “That would be less than half Please see ELECTION | 2A

Corinth welcomes historic home BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon as over 50 residents and even a few out-of-town guests gathered at the historic Duncan House for a special oc-

casion. Officially unveiling a newly placed Mississippi Department of Archives and History sign, the ribbon cutting also offered a sneak-peek into the rich history of the circa 1858 residence.

receive baskets will be notified by telephone so it’s essential application forms include a working phone number that will be working between Dec. 5 and Dec. 15. A fundraising goal of $23,000 has been set to support the effort and donations from the community are essential to make the program a success said Daily Corinthian Publisher Reece Terry. “We’re really counting on the community to help us reach our goal,” said Terry. “We’re proud to be able to partner with the Rotary Club on a program that helps give back to our community.” Donations for the program can be dropped off at the newspaper office or mailed to the above address. Charity Ball moves to New Year’s Eve BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Guests at this year’s Charity Ball will pop the cork on the New Year as they enjoy “big city” fun for a cause. Presented by Junior Auxiliary of Corinth and benefiting the children of Alcorn County, the 55th Annual Charity Ball will transport patrons to a vibrant metropolis filled with lights and skyscrapers as they ring in 2017. Held at Shiloh Ridge Athletic Club at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31 until after midnight on Sunday, Jan 1, the 2017 ball will bring all the energy of Times Square and other urban hot spots to the Crossroads for a night of fellowship and celebra-

tion. “There typically aren’t a lot of things to go to in Corinth on New Year’s Eve so we thought what better way to shake things up than to have a sparkling New Year’s bash for everyone to enjoy,” said J.A. President Jamie Jones.“It is our hope that by changing the date and having it on New Year’s Eve that we can reach people who’ve wanted to, but never had the opportunity to attend before.” “It is going to be a spectacular event and we have a lot of surprises in store for those who attend,” she added. Echoing her sentiments, Charity Ball Chair Marley Ashe expressed her appreciation for the theme.

“We chose ‘In the City’ as this year’s theme because we wanted something exciting and different than we’ve done in the past. Since Charity Ball is our biggest fundraiser of the year, we thought it would be fitting to have it on one of the biggest nights of the year.” “We want people to feel like they are out for a dressy night on the town with their loved ones and friends,” she continued. Featuring a formal, sit-down dinner and lavish decorations, ballgoers are encouraged to wear long gowns and suits. Black tie is optional. In addition to the date Please see BALL | 6A
