Nation goes with Trump BY JULIE PACE AND ROBERT FURLOW Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Donald Trump was elected America’s 45th president Tuesday, an astonishing victory for a celebrity businessman and political novice who capitalized on voters’ economic anxieties, took advantage of racial tensions and overcame a string of sexual assault allegations on his way to the White House. His triumph over Hillary Clinton will end eight years of Democratic dominance of the White House and threatens to undo major achievements of President Barack Obama. He’s pledged to act quickly to repeal Obama’s landmark health care law, revoke the nuclear agreement with Iran and rewrite im-

And he gives people hope.” Doug Ratliff Donald Trump supporter portant trade deals with other countries, particularly Mexico and Canada. He needed to win nearly all of the competitive battleground states, and he did just that, claiming Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and others. Global stock markets and U.S.
stock futures plunged deeply, reflecting investor alarm over what a Trump presidency might mean for the economy and trade. Trump gets huge win in county BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Twenty years after President Bill Clinton narrowly carried Alcorn County over Republican Bob Dole, Hillary Clinton lost the county in a landslide Tuesday to Donald J. Trump. Alcorn County continued its hard turn to the right in presidential votes, giving Trump/ Pence an easy win with 80 percent of the vote. Meanwhile,
voter turnout was short of election officials’ expectations, coming in behind the participation level of 2008 and near that of 2012. Trump carried the county with 11,616 votes to Hillary Clinton’s 2,609 (18 percent). Third-party candidates barely registered, with Libertarian Gary Johnson taking 164 votes (1 percent). Since Dole’s loss of the coun-
ty 20 years ago, the Republican presidential ticket has improved its fortunes with each passing term. Dole took 45 percent of the vote, losing to Clinton by about 240 votes in an election that saw third-party candidate Ross Perot take more than 900 Alcorn County votes (8 percent). Three school board and two election commissioner seats were decided in Tuesday’s General Election. In the race for Alcorn School District Board of Education, Daniel Cooper, Ann Little and Ricky Fields took the wins. Opposed election commissioner district wins went to Kim Ratliff and Bobby McDaniel. Each candidate will take office in January. Cooper took two of the four precincts in the district three school board race and received 747 votes or 44 percent including absentees. Keith R. Stevens was second with 580 votes and interim board member Lamar Walker collected 388 votes for third. Cooper claimed both the Biggersville and South Corinth box, while Stevens took the Rienzi and split Jacinto boxes. “I am truly humbled by the response. My heartfelt thanks goes to everyone who encouraged me to run and who voted
for me,” Cooper told the Daily Corinthian. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve the children of Alcorn County. I promise I’ll try Cooper to make the best decisions to ensure our kids get the best education.” Cooper, a Biggersville used car dealer, will finish Fields the term of former board member Carroll Morton, who resigned in February. The Alliance leaders reflect on unusual year BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
It was a time of reflection at the 22nd Annual Meeting of The Alliance. Outgoing CEO Jason Marlar said his year at the helm of the community development organization has been unusual. “The year started off pretty normal. We started out looking at the budget, rehashing what our goals were and making our main priority continuing to develop the 400-acre tract of land that we purchased in eastern Alcorn County known as the RailHub,” said Marlar on Monday night before a crowded
Crossroads Arena conference center. “We also began concentrating on a 125-acre sweet spot located between the two railroads.” The organization received close to $750,000 in matching grants this year to develop the RailHub land. Most of the grant money The Alliance has received so far has been used to clear off the land. The next phase – which will include creating an level access road to the RailHub property – is set to began in early 2017. Marlar said The Alliance has experienced some turnover this year.
The Alliance saw the departure of three employees in 2016, including Main Street Director Brent Johnson, COO Gary Chandler and Keep Corinth Beautiful Director Andrea Rose. “Gary did a fantastic job leading The Alliance in what has been the worst six or seven year economic downturn I’ve seen since I’ve been in banking,” said Marlar. “Gary did such good work, but nothing was ever easy. He may not have landed a big fish for Corinth, but he certainly did his fair share to prevent jobs from leaving.” Please see ALLIANCE | 2A
