The Corinth Civitan Club will mark six decades of service to the community with a special celebration bash. The 60-year reunion celebration will be held at noon on Wednesday at Pizza Grocery. “We invite all our former members back to join us as well as anyone who would be interested in becoming a member of Civitans,” said board member and past president Tina Bugg. In addition to fun and fellowship with past and prospective members, the celebration will also feature the presentation of the 2016 Hometown Hero. This year’s award goes to

Parade honors those who served It was a time to come together and give thanks for the ones who served. On Friday morning veterans, public servants and regular folks met in downtown Corinth for the Veterans Day Parade. To the sound of area high school marching bands, the parade headed straight through the center of town to its destination at the Alcorn County Courthouse.

Veterans of wars in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East, along with local veterans’ organizations, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, members of antique car clubs, antique tractor clubs, motorcycle clubs, area fire departments, city government and a dozen other groups formed a convoy in celebration of the ones who risked it all for America. Among them were men who were present when history was made, like Harold Rogers, a

veteran of the Korean War, and Honnel Lancaster, one of many present who served in the Vietnam war. “He went straight from Alcorn County to the Tet Offensive. Eighteen years old. Can you imagine that?” said event organizer Bobby McDaniel, a fellow veteran of the Vietnam era. The occasion brought out people of all ages. Eleven-year-

More than 70 people recently helped “Knock Out Hunger” in the Crossroads. Modern Woodmen of Corinth hosted the event where volunteers assembled 10,000 macaroni and cheese meals in an effort to fight local hunger. “Modern Woodmen is a company that really emphasizes giving back to the community,” said volunteer Jessica Eaton, wife of Modern Woodman representative Steven Eaton. “Last year the regional office did a ‘Knock Out Hunger’ event, so we wanted to do one here in Corinth.”

Given at least once per year, past recipients of the award have included local humanitarians such as Jimmy Deaton, Elmer Strachan and John Rhodes. “We hope that everyone will join us as we turn 60 and consider becoming members,” said Bugg. “Being a Civitan member is a great way to stay community minded, enjoy opportunities for fellowship and lend a helping hand to others all year long.” What a blessing it is to give rather than to receive, especially with the little ones because Please see CIVITANS | 2

People of the Crossroads George Shahin, Corinth Staff photo by Bobby J. Smith

Corinth resident George Shahin finds joy in life through humor — in laughing himself and telling jokes to make others laugh. The 48-year-old has many opportunities to share his sense of humor with the people he works with and serves at his job. The Palestine native can be found most days in his trademark brown straw fedora behind the counter at the Crossroads Quick Stop on Harper Road, just east of the Highway 45 intersection, where he has worked for the last eight months. “I love it, love coming to work,” Shahin said of his job. “All the people, the customers, my coworkers — it’s lovely.”
