The Alliance names Stanley president The Alliance, Corinth and Alcorn County’s economic development organization, on Friday announced Clayton Stanley of Corinth as its new president effective Jan. 1, following an intensive nationwide search. Stanley, 37, has spent the past nine years as a lobbyist for Capitol Resources specializing in economic development, health care, manufac-

turing and education. Stanley represented a number of Fortune 100 companies including several of Mississippi’s largest employers. Prior to joining Capitol Resources he served as president of Gateway Corporation, overseeing the company’s importing, manufacturing, sales and distribution network across the U.S. and internationally.

“Clayton was the clear choice to lead the Alliance forward,” said Brian McCullen, Alliance volunteer CEO. “His experience, accomplishments, vast network of business contacts, skill set, work ethic and vision for Corinth and Alcorn County set him apart from a very talented field of applicants.” Comprised of board officers, lo-

cal elected officials and business leaders, The Alliance Search Committee worked hand-in-hand with The Pace Group, a leading executive search firm specializing in economic development. A top-notch pool of candidates was developed, and the search committee interviewed the Please see STANLEY | 5

Donations, fundraisers approved by board BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn School District Board of Education accepted four donations at their monthly meeting earlier this week. An anonymous donor donated a used washer and dryer to the district’s alternative school. The alternative school also received a $1,000 donation from the Mississippi Professional Education Grant. Those monies will be used on classroom supplies. Kossuth High School received two donations including a $1,500 donation from Kim-

berly-Clark for the KHS dance team. The KHS softball booster club also donated $6,443.41 to the high school. In other district news, 26 fundraisers were approved for the months of November and December. With thieves looking for easy pickings in driveways and parking lots, the police department is warning residents to lock car doors and be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Car burglaries, in particular, are on the rise. Construction workers and landscapers who carry tools in trucks are also being targeted. “We’re having cars broken into sitting in their driveways where they’re not locking them,” said Police Chief Ralph Dance. “They are getting wallets, firearms, loose change, glasses — whatever they can find.” It is also happening in business parking lots — a criminal activity that picks up as the holidays near. Any vehicle that is left unlocked is an open invitation. “In this day and time, you just can’t,” said Dance. “There

are people prowling around at night looking for open cars.” Unattended trucks with tools sitting in the back are another open invitation. “A lot of these items that have been stolen lately are chainsaws, blowers, work tools, that sort of thing,” he said. “These construction workers and tree trimmers pull up in these store parking lots just for a minute, and these people are watching and they grab what they want out of the truck and are on their way. My suggestion would be have someone stay with the vehicle and someone go in.” Utility trailers are also a concern. He suggests blocking a trailer in with another vehicle or putting it behind the house and padlocking it — basically, make it as difficult as possible to steal. Dance encourages people to watch for and report any suspicious activity around vehicles.

Absentee voting underway for supreme court runoff BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Election commissioners certified the general election results Thursday morning as attention turns to a low-key runoff for a seat on the Mississippi Supreme Court. Absentee voting is in progress for the District 3 Position 1 runoff between John Brady and Bobby Chamberlin. Brady is a shareholder in the Columbus office of Mitchell, McNutt & Sams law firm, and Chamberlin, a Hernando resident, is a circuit court judge for the 17th Circuit Court District. County circuit clerks’ offices are open until noon today and next Saturday for absentee voting in the race.

On Nov. 8, Brady barely carried Alcorn County with 3,702 votes, followed by James T. “Jim” Kitchens Jr. with 3,700. Kitchens did not make the runoff in the regional race, however. Steve Crampton was also in the race. The winner will replace exiting Justice Ann Lamar. With just one race to be on the Nov. 29 ballot and little attention focused on the race, the Alcorn County Circuit Clerk’s Office expects voter turnout to be minimal. The voter I.D. law delayed certification of the general election until Thursday because those who voted by afPlease see VOTING | 5
