Don Elliott will retire next month after 31 years as pastor at Corinth’s First Presbyterian Church.

Elliott retiring from First Presbyterian move a lot and don’t really settle ... but Corinth just felt right. This church and the congregation just felt right.” It was August 1985 when a young pastor, his wife, Lynn, and three sons moved from their home in Georgia to the small town of Corinth. “I guess if I had to give a reason why I have been here so long it is because the congregation has always been very supportive of me and my family,” said Elliott. During his time as leader, the Shiloh Road church has changed a lot, growing in numbers from 300 members in the mid-1980s to more than 500 today. “Sunday morning attendance

For more than 30 years Don Elliott has delivered heart-to-heart preaching from behind Corinth’s First Presbyterian Church pulpit ... but now the 68-year-old’s days are numbered. He is less than one month from retirement and while there’s no doubt both his congregation and the community will miss him, he promises he’s not going anywhere. “I didn’t plan on staying here for 31 years, it just turned out that way. We really love small towns ... and there was something about Corinth that connected with me and my family,” said Elliott. “Pastors normally

has improved, as well,” said Elliott. “It hasn’t been dramatic growth, but I think the way the church has changed so much has to do with the life of the church.” Elliott’s highlights include a 1990 spiritual renewal in the church which lead to new ministries including the Youth House and Kids House ministry. “The growth of our missions programs has been encouraging to me,” he said. “We give almost 25 percent of our budget to others -- world missions, local missions and the needy in our community.” Last week Elliott and many Please see ELLIOTT | 2A

Deuce McAllister, Walter Payton and Steve “Air” McNair have all contributed to Mississippi’s sports history. University of Mississippi professor Dr. Charles Ross will share his research on African-Americans who have impacted sports in the Magnolia state during a special free program next week at the Crossroads Museum. Set for Tuesday at 6 p.m., the lecture is held in conjunction with the museum’s Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Hometown Teams: Ross How Sports Shape America. A native of Ohio and the current chair of the AfricanAmerican Studies Program at Ole Miss, Ross’s program will include highlights of AfricanAmericans born in Mississippi or have played sports in Mississippi who have had a major impact on sports in America. Ross is also the author of “Outside the Lines: African Americans and the Integration of the National Football League” and has appeared on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines”. “We are very excited to have Dr. Ross presenting his program at the museum,” said Cathy Wood, museum president. “His knowledge of 20th Century U.S. History, AfricanAmerican history and sports history should make for a very interesting talk.”

Ross will also discuss future African-American athletic newsmakers with Mississippi ties including Anthony Alford who attended Ole Miss and currently plays for the Toronto Blue Jays and Victoria Vivians, of Carthage, who currently plays basketball at Mississippi State University. Presented by the museum and the Mississippi Humanities Council, Tuesday night’s free lecture is the second of five speaking engagements set at the museum over the next five weeks. Upcoming programs include “African-Americans in Baseball” by Dr. Phil Dixon on Dec. 6, Coaching Then & Now by Coach John Smillie on Dec. 13 and Sports Photography Tips & Tricks by Michael H. Miller on Dec. 20. Dr. Charles Westmoreland presented “Archie Who?” on Nov. 22. The Hometown Teams exhibit, which is on display at the Corinth Public Library through Dec. 30, takes a look at how people’s lives are influenced by the sports they play. Through videos, images, objects and personal reflections gathered from teams around the country, Hometown Teams shows that sports are more than just games. With his eye on a Mississippi Supreme Court seat, Bobby Chamberlin of Hernando hopes to draw on the experience of a diverse background including a dozen years on the bench as a circuit court judge. In 2004, Chamberlin, 51, was appointed to serve in the Seventeenth Circuit Court District and is currently the district’s senior circuit court judge. As the high court reviews cas-
