The spirit of giving this holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are beginning to pour in for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets can be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets will be given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far, $900 has been raised. Recent donations include $200 from the First Baptist Church Corinth Ambassador Sunday School Class and $200 from the Col. W.P. Rogers Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp No. 31 in honor of their Real Grandsons - Leroy Worsham, Christy Morgan, Arthur Dalton Jr. and Harvey Cartwright. Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published daily in the Daily Corinthian. Donations can be brought by the newspaper office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or mailed to: Daily Corinthian, Attn.:Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 1800, Corinth, MS 38835.

Local authorities are looking for a white man who escaped the Alcorn County Jail. David Todd Johnson, 46, walked off from his work detail in the jail kitchen some time Thursday, according to sheriff-elect Ben Caldwell, who was contracted to man-
age both the regional correctional facility and county jail by the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors last month. “He was working with trustees in the jail when at some point he walked off from the kitchen,” said Caldwell, who was on his way back from a training class in

SELMER, Tenn. — McNairy County schools were placed on soft lockdown just before noon Thursday. All schools had limited access following a threat which was deemed to not be genuine. Buses and dismissals ran on schedule. Soft lockdown is a normal operating procedure during situations like Thursday and it limits access points to each school.

GLEN — More than words on a sheet of paper. Central Stage hopes its one-act competition play opens eyes to the world of soldiers. “Letters Home” is being presented today at Mississippi State University in the Northern District Drama Fest. Central Stage performed a trio of dress rehearsals earlier this week to get ready for the competition. “This is kind of like our state tournament,” said co-director Twila Bridges of the competition. Bridges and fellow director Leanna Williams wanted to do something to put the emphasis on there many male actors this year at Alcorn Central. “We thought something about soldiers would be awesome,” added Bridges. Corinth’s newest antique mall is wrapping up renovations just in time for Christmas. A grand opening set for this weekend will christen The Open Market, featuring more than 75 vendors who sell a little bit of everything ... including the kitchen sink. “From antiques, new furniture and clothing to home decor, toys and collectibles, there’s a ton of unique items to be seen at The Open Market,” according to Trey Albright, who along with Stuart Green purchased the local business in March. “People can literally spend the entire afternoon browsing the eclectic mix of items here.” The market’s grand opening is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Several of our valued vendors have donated items and we will host drawPlease see MARKET | 6A

UPS is doing more than delivering packages this Christmas season. The world’s largest package delivery company is collecting toys in attempt to make Christmas even brighter for some local children. UPS is slated to collect toys beginning today and during the Corinth Christmas Parade on Saturday. The NASCAR UPS truck will be on display at Lesley’s Carpet for people to drop off toys. The Salvation Army opens its first service center in the state in Corinth on U.S. Highway 72 East. Divisional Commander Lt. Col. Darryl Holley says Corinth is the fastest growing area of the state.
Area veterans are honored as grand marshals of the annual Corinth Christmas parade. The veterans are followed by the Kossuth High School band performing a medley of U.S. armed forces songs.
