Basket fund tops $2,300 The spirit of giving this holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are beginning to pour in for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far, $2,355 has been raised. Recent donations include a $100 from Glennan and Jay Grady; $50 from the Cheryl Malone Starling family in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Coy Malone and Mr. and Mrs. L.Q. Starling; $100 from Tracy and Candy Briggs in memory of Wayne and Jeanette Briggs and Kathy Shields; $100 from James Red Richardson in memory of Freddie Richardson, Irene Richardson, J.W. Richardson, Lena Faye Richardson and Marion Duncan. Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published daily in the Daily Corinthian. The Alcorn County Bar Association is looking for people who need help. Local attorneys are volunteering their time for the Free Family Law Legal Clinic. The clinic is open to individuals who are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. “We were unable to service all who needed assistance during our first clinic, so we decided to have another one this month,” said attorney Phil Hinton with the Alcorn County Bar Association. Those eligible must be prescreened by the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (MVLP) prior to the Dec. 14 clinic at the Alcorn County Chancery Building. The meeting place is located at 501 East Waldron Street and attorneys will be on hand to help people from 4-7 p.m. Individuals can qualify by calling the MVLP at 601-9609577. The Lighthouse Foundation is making a final push for donations as the date nears for their annual Toy Store. The group will help around 400 families provide gifts to their children this Thursday during the annual event and funds are still needed to help pay the bills for the outreach effort. Alcorn County Supervisors agree to help fund a study for a proposed regional landfill. Third District Supervisor Ely Mitchell says the county will provide approximately $19,000 of the cost of the study.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History awards an $800,000 grant to Alcorn County for improvements to the courthouse. Chancery Clerk Larry McCollum notes this is the third grant awarded for the work.

Attorneys host free legal clinic

Winner takes $20,000 option A Corinth woman who owns no vehicle and doesn’t drive recently won a new car at a local automobile dealership. That didn’t stop Flora Hughey from walking away with the winning optional money. Hughey received an invitation in the mail last week prompting her to visit Crossroads Chevrolet Buick GMC. When she walked in the dealership on Dec. 4, she thought she was being tricked. “They told me I had won the car. I had no idea. I though they were teasing,” she said. “I told them that I didn’t drive. They said that didn’t matter,” added the winner, who hasn’t won since she was a teen-ager. Dealership owner Jeff Smith said Hughey was given the choice of a new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze sedan or $20,000 in cash. If she had chosen the car, Smith said all fees and taxes would have been paid by the dealership. “I’ve never won that much money before,” said Hughey. “I thank God, because I could really use it right now.” A life-long resident of
