Santa Claus visits FCA group BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

GLEN — Christmas came earlier at Alcorn Central Wednesday. Elementary students got the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus thanks to the Alcorn Central High School Fellowship of Christian Athletics. Eleven FCA sophomores, juniors and seniors organized the yearly event which gave each pre-kindergarten through fourth graders a few

minutes with Santa. Each student also received a candy cane from Saint Nick. Students who paid $5 received a photo with Santa. “We all volunteer our time to help make this special for every kid,” said kindergarten assistant Wendy Mullins, who managed the Santa photography during the event. “Best of all, every kid gets to see Santa — he loves talking to every single kid and finding out what they want for Christmas.”

Students were also treated to a Christmas sing-along and story time while they waited for their turn with Santa. Money raised from the event help fund scholarships awarded to a two deserving ACHS FCA students each year. “It’s great to be able to help raise some money for our scholarships, but we really do this because the kids enjoy it so much,” said FCA Student President Josh Harbor.

County supervisors passed resolutions Monday to get plans moving on replacement of a couple of unsafe bridges. Affecting a small number of residents, the bridges are on County Road 764 in the First District and Droke Road in the Corinth city limits. The resolutions request the assistance of the Tombigbee River Valley Water Management District. In both cases, a temporary bridge will be set next to the bridges during the repair. The bridge on the east end of Droke Road “serves one house and serves three farms,” said Corinth Street Commissioner Philip Verdung. “It’s the only way in and out. It also provides the city access to the Phillips Creek and Bridge Creek flood plains in that area.” City services are not currently able to cross the bridge. Only counties can request assistance from TRVWMD, so the city asked the county to pass the resolution. The Road 764 bridge affects one home on a dead-end road. Tombigbee will provide labor while the local governments will provide the materials. In other business before the Please see COUNTY | 2

Family hosts Santa for shelter benefit BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Santa is showing up for the shelter. Bobby and Jane McDaniel will be entertaining Saint Nick in his visit to the area. The McDaniels have their home decorated — inside and out — with thousands of decorations for his trip from the North Pole. Individuals are invited to see both Santa Claus and all the decorations on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. “This is all Jane,” said Bobby of the countless Christmas trinkets. “I just get them up and put them back up.” Bobby decided to incorporate the decorations into a way to help the CorinthAlcorn Animal Shelter. “The shelter is necessary,” he said. “If not for it, there would be animals roaming all over the place.” Jane McDaniel started her annual Christmas work in early November. It

takes over a month to get five trees up, over 100 Nutcrackers placed along with other numerous decorative items related to the Christmas season. “It gets better every year because I find something I want to add,” said Jane who has been decorating the home for 20 years. “I get a lot of ideas from magazines.” Around nine inflatables are in the front yard of the home. Those wishing to have their photo taken with Santa Claus can do so around the inflatables. “They can take their own photos if they want,” added Bobby. “A donation jar will be set up for people to give to the shelter.” The McDaniels live at 25 County Road 105. The best route is to take Kendrick Road and turn on County Road 126. The home will be the last one on the left after going through two stop signs.
