Oath set for elected officials BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Basket fund tops $3,500 The spirit of giving this holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are beginning to pour in for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fund raising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far, $3,590 has been raised. Recent donations include $100 from Lee F. Thurner in honor of Leroy Worsham; and $50 from The Orlich family in memory of Manuel G. Orlich. Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published daily in the Daily Corinthian. Donations can be brought by the newspaper office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or mailed to: Daily Corinthian, Attn.: Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 1800, Corinth, MS 38835.

Plans are set for new and returning county elected officials to take the oath of office. The swearing-in of those newly elected and those reelected in this year’s elections is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in the courtroom at the Alcorn County Courthouse. Circuit Judge Paul Funderburk will lead the recitation of the oath. A small reception will follow. Four years ago, the swear-in was held at the new courtroom at the South Harper justice center. Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell said it was decided to have the event at the courthouse this time because its courtroom has a larger seating capacity. The Dec. 30 date will get the swear-in completed before the Thursday-Friday county holiday and the start of the new year, which opens a new fouryear term for county government. Heavenly sounds will echo from a sparkling eight-tiered evergreen as hundreds gather in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church for a spectacular holiday event. Slated to be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13, the 60-voice choir will present their annual Singing Christmas Tree. A final performance has been set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14. Free and open to the public, tickets are not required to attend. This year’s program entitled, “Come to the Light” will feature a drum-line playing percussion on plastic garbage cans and sign language as well as the voices of the adult, youth and children’s choirs under the direction of the church’s Music Minister Dr. Royce Wilder. “This presentation of Christmas music is centered on the light that shines on the world through the birth of Jesus, and how we are to respond to that light,” said Music and Youth
