MARSH TOWN — Some are calling it the Christmas Eve miracle.

Dr. David Chase and four family members escaped serious injury after their singleengine turboprop plane went down shortly after takeoff from the Corinth-Alcorn County Airport on Christmas Eve morning.

The 8:45 a.m. Dec. 24 crash landing happened just south of the Corinth-Alcorn County Airport on County Road 504 just off Highway 2.

Alcorn County Emergency Management Director Ricky Gibens said the total loss wreckage was loaded onto a flatbed truck about noon Christmas Day to be transported to a recovery team hangar in Springfield, Tenn., where officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will determine the malfunction which caused the crash landing.

“They will determine the cause of the crash,” he said.

Clay Turner of Turner Aviation at the airport was contacted and acknowledged he was the first person to arrive at the crash site. Officials

said Turner helped get the Chase family out of the burning plane. He declined comment.

Firefighters from Biggersville, Kossuth and Corinth assisted at the scene, as did law en-

forcement officers from Corinth, Alcorn County and Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Magnolia EMS also responded with several units.

Church hosts Nightwatch

The church will hold a Watchnight Service on Dec. 31 at its 1527 Highway 72 location – next to Zaxby’s. The special service begins at 7 p.m. and concludes at midnight. “Our churches need prayer warriors and this will be a good time for

The Warners say it’s the experiences they had and relationships they built through the Alumni Association that inspired them to create the University of Mississippi Life Member Endowment with a $1 million planned gift.

“Bob and Mary Ellen are two of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” said Sheila Dossett, interim executive director of alumni affairs. “We greatly appreciate their involvement in the Alumni Association through the years and their amazing generosity.”

Bob Warner received a biology degree from Ole Miss in 1979 and his medical degree four years later from the UM School of Medicine.

In an effort to help others have a similar UMMC opportunity, the Warners have established the Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Warner Jr. University Medical Center Scholarship Endowment in addition to their designated gift to the Alumni Association.

BOONEVILLE — Some Booneville residents got a major shock in their tax statements last week thanks to a problem with the software used to calculate their bills.

City Clerk Jana Lindsey said approximately 1,800 parcels in the city received incorrectly calculated tax bills when the annual statements were sent out last week. New bills with the correct figures were scheduled to be mailed out this week before the Christmas holiday.

Lindsey said the city recently changed software providers for its tax system and an error was made when the information was transferred between the old and new systems, resulting in the bills being calculated at a significantly higher millage rate for the affected parcels which are primarily in the annexed area of the city.

She said they apologize for any confusion the issue may have caused and are taking steps to make sure it doesn’t occur again in the future.

Officers hand out goodwill and cash TUPELO — Tupelo Police officers pulled over a handful of cars Tuesday morning, but it wasn’t to give out tickets. It was to hand out $100 bills.

For the second year, a local business decided to give back, anonymously, as a Secret Santa.

“It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling,” said the business owner, who requested to remain anonymous. “I heard good things about it last year, so I put the money in the budget this year.”

The event also gives officers like Sgt. Brett Moyer a chance to show off their softer side as they picked out vehicles with a parent and a child.

“I don’t want to see your license, I want to see you smile,” Moyer said to a surprised Stacey Johnson and his 13-year-old son Jordan.

Johnson thought he might have been speeding because he had never heard of police handing out money. But the money would come in handy to buy a present for his wife.

when she was stopped.

“I was terrified when I saw those (blue) lights and heard the siren,” Shannon said. “But I want to say ‘Thank you.’ I’m going to go get my girls some shoes now.

“And I have a testimony now.

I can’t wait to tell folks, ‘Guess what happened to me?’”

Lakendria Maxwell was shaken at first, but quickly asked Moyer for a hug. He graciously complied.

“I don’t always get to see folks when they are at their best,” Moyer said. “It’s great to be able to interact with people in a positive manner and show them that we are people too.”

Tupelo air service to resume in March TUPELO (AP) — Commercial air service in Tupelo, Mississippi, will resume in March.

The U.S. Department of Transportation selected Corporate Flight Management to provide service in Tupelo with 30 nonstop round trips per week to Nashville International Airport.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Tupelo has been without an air carrier since Oct. 27, when SeaPort Airlines prematurely ended its service following nearly year-long complaints about its poor service.

The Tupelo Airport Authority unanimously selected Smyrna, Tennessee-based CFM to provide air taxi service using ninepassenger Jetstream planes.

west of Walnut as it crossed U.S. 72 on Wednesday.

“We were in the perfect spot to see this large tornado,” said Canaday. “It was approximately 3⁄4 of a mile or a mile wide.

It was moving very fast and the rotation was insane. Wind speeds in the tornado were estimated around 190-220 m.p.h.”

Canaday, certified by the National Weather Service as an Advanced Skywarn Spotter, got within 400 yards of the twister and at one point was standing in the outer circulation of the tornado. “It was a little too close for comfort,” said the weather spotter.

Alcorn County escaped major damage or reports of injuries, but one of the deaths from Benton County was confirmed at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones pronounced the death of 69-year-old Max Croxton who had a Hamilton Road, Falkner address, but lived in Benton County.

“He and his wife were inside a mobile home when the tornado hit,” said Jones. “His wife (Ellen) died at the scene.”

The Croxton’s were two of at least three fatalities in Benton County.

Severe weather and unseasonable warm weather continued in the Crossroads area on Christmas Day with heavy rain, thunderstorms, flash flood watch and high temperatures in the 60s.

Today’s high temperature in Corinth is expected to reach 76, which may end up being a new record for Dec. 26.

Gibens said Alcorn County had some power outages and wind damage on Wednesday, but “we’ve dodged a bullet once again.”

Christmas Day brought some flooding, including County Road 504 where the plane crash occurred, he said.

Newly homeless, Perkins said she was happy just to be alive — especially after learning two of her neighbors had died in the storm.

“You kind of stop and realize what Christmas is all about,” Perkins said.

The unseasonably violent weather that spawned deadly tornadoes Wednesday in the Southeast forced families to spend Christmas Eve taking stock of their losses. At least 14 people were confirmed dead — seven of them in Mississippi, including a 7-year-old boy who perished while riding in a car that was swept up and tossed by storm winds.

Six people were killed in Tennessee and one in Arkansas.

Dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed.

Unseasonably warm weather Wednesday helped spawn twisters from Arkansas to Michigan. The line of springlike storms continued marching east Thursday, dumping torrential rain that flooded roads in Alabama and caused a mudslide in the mountains of Georgia.

Dozens of people were injured in the storms, some seriously, said Greg Flynn, spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Search teams combed damaged homes and businesses for people still missing, a hunt made complicated because so many had left for the holidays.

“Until they know for sure where those folks are, they’re going to keep looking, because we’ve had in some cases houses leveled, and they’re just not there anymore,” Flynn said.

In Benton County, relatives helped Daisy and Charles Johnson clean up after the storm flattened their house. They carried some of the couple’s belongings past a Santa Clause figure on a table.

Daisy Johnson, 68, said she and her husband rushed along with other relatives to their storm shelter across the street after they heard a tornado was headed their way.

“We looked straight west of us, and there it was. It was yellow and it was roaring, lightning just continually, and it was making a terrible noise,” she said. “I never want to hear that again for as long as I live.”

Mona Ables, 43, was driving home when the storm hit. She abandoned her car, ran to a house and banged on a window, seeking shelter.

“He and I just huddled together and saw trees fly past us, and a shipping container flip over,” Ables said. “And as the debris started hitting us, he just covered me, and within a minute it was all over and there was destruction all around us and we were fine.”

Peak tornado season in the South is in the spring, but such storms can happen at any time.

Exactly a year ago, tornadoes hit Mississippi, killing five people and injuring dozens.

Glenda Hunt, 69, was cooking chicken and making dressing Wednesday night at her Benton County home, where Christmas Eve lunch is a family tradition, when her daughter called to warn her of the approaching storm.

Hunt and her husband ducked into their storm shelter and wrestled the door shut against the wind’s powerful suction. She started praying when she heard sheet metal hitting trees.

On Thursday, heavy farm equipment and corn were strewn across the couple’s property. Their house sustained heavy structural damage but was still standing.

“We’re OK and that’s all that matters,” Hunt said. “But the Lord did save my furniture.”

Black caucus turns back on its children The omnibus spending bill just passed by Congress is, if nothing else, in the spirit of the season. It’s a huge Christmas tree: a grand structure on which every political interest imaginable has hung its own pet program.

This is to the tune of $1.1 trillion to $1.8 trillion in explicit spending and another $622 billion in indirect spending through “tax extenders.”

Yet, as lobbyists in Washington showed up en masse for their shares of the fruitcake, one group was elbowed out and left with coal for its stocking.

That would be minority children in our nation’s capital.

The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which for Star 10 years has provided vouchParker ers for low-income minority Columnist children in Washington, D.C., to escape from one of the nation’s worst public school systems and attend a private school, was not reauthorized in this latest spending orgy.

The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice reported in 2014, regarding this program, that “98.8 percent of students helped this year alone were students of color, most low-income; voucher students were 25 percent more likely to enroll in college than their peers; (there was a) 91 percent graduation rate, making voucher students 21 percent more likely to graduate than their counterparts.”

The program started in 2004 under President George W. Bush.

Four years ago President Obama tried to kill the program, but it was saved by Speaker John Boehner.

Now we are hearing some harsh words about the failure of Republicans to save the D.C. scholarship program from hostile Democrats this time around.

But why isn’t anyone asking the more logical question? Where are the black leaders?

Why aren’t they looking out for the interests of their own children?

The 46-member-strong Congressional Black Caucus supposedly exists to watch for the unique interests of America’s black community. CBC Chairman G. K. Butterfield, DN.C., issued a press release indicating opposition to the omnibus bill.

This spending bill increases both overall spending and the deficit. Nevertheless, the D.C. voucher program is cut and the Congressional Black Caucus does nothing.

The explanation is that the Black Caucus is more interested in the politics and economics of union power – the teachers unions oppose voucher programs – than in the education of black children.

Last month, Hillary Clinton, who as the prospective Democrat presidential candidate can likely count on 90 percent of the black vote, pulled her support for charter schools (which are also opposed by the teachers unions who have endorsed her).

“I am ... fully aware that there are a lot of substandard public schools,” she said. “But part of the reason for that is that policymakers and local politicians will not fund schools in poor areas that take care of poor children to the level that they need to be.”

But D.C.’s public schools are among the best-funded as well as among the worstperforming in the nation. According to the Cato Institute, D.C. public schools have been spending $30,000 per student in recent years. This compared to an average voucher cost of less than $9,000 per student, with better results than public schools.

As we watch the ongoing stories of crime and violence in urban areas, and the outcries and allegations of racism that supposedly drive all this, let’s keep in mind the deepest problem in black America. Their political leadership is corrupt and too busy feathering their nests to take care of their own children.

Agriculture remains a $7.4 billion industry STARKVILLE — No matter the digital distractions, it’s difficult to drive in any direction in Mississippi and not spend at least some time contemplating the state of agriculture and forestry in this state.

Despite the push for manufacturing jobs, agriculture/ forestry is still Mississippi’s top industry. Based on data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 260,000 Mississippians – roughly 17 percent of the state’s total workforce – derive their income from agriculture directly or indirectly.

There are 10.9 million acres in the state dedicated to agriculture and another 19.7 million acres in timber production. There are some 37,100 farms in the state, with an average size of around 290 acres – but about 4,500 of those farms are larger than 500 acres.

For perspective, in 1910 there were an estimated 275,000 farms in Mississippi.

But there are challenges facing Mississippi agriculture. In 2014, Mississippi agriculture was a $7.9 billion industry. The Office of Agricultural Communications at the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service at Mississippi State University at year-end each year produc-

What the combined work of those writers reflect is that while agriculture remains a powerhouse in Mississippi’s economy, market forces had an impact on overall agricultural values. It’s not that the yields were necessarily bad this year; rather, the bar was set very high last year in terms of yields,” he said. “Additionally, most prices are at or below year-ago prices.”

Government payments added $199 million to the state’s agricultural value.

When these funds are included, agriculture brought an estimated $7.4 billion to the state, down 4.5 percent

from 2014’s $7.9 billion performance.

Poultry ($3.2 billion, up 3.4 percent) and forestry ($1.16 billion, up 13.5 percent) continue to be Mississippi’s leading cash crops.

Soybeans were the state’s top row crop and third best agricultural commodity at ($930 million, down 26 percent), but lost some $370 million in value from 2014’s performance.

Among other crops, Williams reported peanuts and sweet potatoes were increasingly successful crops in the state and the both were expected to see increases next year.

MSU associate forestry professor James Henderson told MCES writers that an increase in new home construction was credited with increases in the state’s forestry values in 2015: “Continued improvement in the U.S. economy has resulted in an improvement in the U.S. housing market, which has been the biggest influence on the rise in the value of forest products. As of October, housing starts have more than doubled from the record low following the Great Recession of 2007-2009.”

Record yields (46 bushels per acre in 2015 compared

to 52 bushels per acre in 2014) in the state’s soybean crops for the past four consecutive growing seasons impacted prices, which Williams said fell precipitously this year: “We are expecting a marketing year average of around $8.87 per bushel compared to $11.10 a bushel in 2014.”

What does it all mean?

Consider what Mississippi looks like without the $7.4 billion impact of agriculture and forestry, plus the additional $2.7 billion annual economic impact of hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.

The rural farm and timber sites visible from our windshields in Mississippi aren’t really pastoral scenery, they are the livelihoods of one-in-five Mississippians. And a thought for the new year – it is estimated that if everyone in Mississippi bought $5 a week in Mississippi farm produce, the state’s economy would improve by some $774 million in new farm revenue.

Eat local, buy local, indeed.

So said Rand Paul, looking directly at Gov. Chris Christie, who had just responded to a question from CNN’s Wolf Blitzer as to whether he would shoot down a Russian plane that violated his no-fly zone in Syria.

“Not only would I be prepared to do it, I would do it,” blurted Christie: “I would talk to Vladimir Putin ... I’d say to him, ‘Listen, Mr. President, there’s a nofly zone in Syria; you fly in, it applies to you.’

“Yes, we would shoot down the planes of Russian pilots if in fact they were stupid enough to think that this president was the same feckless weakling ... we have in the Oval Office ... right now.”

Ex-Gov. George Pataki and ex-Sen. Rick Santorum would also impose a no-fly zone and shoot down Russian planes that violated it.

Said Gov. John Kasich, “It’s time we punched the Russians in the nose.”

Carly Fiorina would impose a no-fly zone and not even talk to Putin until we’ve conducted “military exercises in the Baltic States” on Russia’s border.

Jeb Bush, too, would impose a no-fly zone.

These warhawks apparently assume that President Putin is a coward who, if you shoot down his warplanes, will back away from

Is Putin bluffing? Are we prepared to ride the up-escalator, at the top of which is nuclear war, if Putin, who has been boasting of his modernized nuclear forces, is also willing to ride it rather than back down?

“I miss George W. Bush!” wailed Graham in the undercard debate.

How many other Americans are, like Graham, pining for the return of a Bush foreign policy that gave us Barack Obama?

Yet, now, a rival school

is taking center stage in the Republican presidential campaign, rejecting the knee-jerk hostility to working with Putin. Not only does Rand Paul belong to this school, so, apparently, do Donald Trump and his strongest challenger, Sen. Ted Cruz.

Cruz had previously disparaged the legacy of the “neocons” who prodded Bush into war in Iraq and championed a democracy crusade in the Middle East.

In Las Vegas, he spoke of a new national-interestbased foreign policy, a policy that puts “America First.”

“If we topple Assad ...

Christmas Basket Fund climbs past $14,000 The spirit of giving the holiday season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area.

Donations continue to pour in for the 20th Annual Corinth Rotary Club / Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund.

A $25,000 fund raising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 5. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached.

So far $14,030 has been raised, meaning $10,970 still has to be raised to meet the goal.

Kossuth FFA team earns bronze medal at national contest

KOSSUTH — Some Kossuth High School students have the ability to communicate ideas.

They have the award to prove it.

KHS’ FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team took part in the National FFA Parliamentary Procedure Career Development event during the 88th National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, Ky. Kossuth’s six-person team competed against 234 other members across the country and was awarded a bronze emblem.

“The National FFA Parliamentary Procedure CDE tests students ability

to effectively communicate ideas during a meeting,” said Kossuth FFA advisor Brad Gillmore.

“Components included a general knowledge exam of parliamentary law, a 10-minute demonstration of parliamentary procedure, oral questions, written minutes of the demonstration as well as a team problem solving activity.”

Members of Kossuth’s team are Mallorie Waldon, Ashley Tullis, Kaitlin Crum, Ainsley Renfrow, Kayla Mercer and Matt Rowland.

Each team competed on both local and state levels to earn the chance to represent their state at the national event.

Remembering Mr. McPeters at Christmastime When Christmastime rolls around, I always remember the day in 2010 when I got a call from Bill McPeters.

He had a Christmas memory to share and wanted me to be the one to write it up. Needless to say, I was anxious to oblige because I always loved to hear his stories and watch him as he opened his heart to everyone he came in contact with.

And of course, the holiday was not the only time Mr. McPeters was thoughtful. He sent flowers to the hospital when friends were sick, he paid for meals in local cafes, he dropped off keepsakes for birthdays – whatever he dreamed up to do, he just did it without second guessing and changing his mind like a lot of us do.

I recently opened a small box and looked again at the beautiful heartshaped silver music box which Mr. McPeters delivered to my house on Christmas Eve after I wrote the article about his growing-up years in the upstairs apartment over his father’s funeral home on Waldron Street.

I’ll always treasure the token of appreciation and have tagged the keepsake so my children will re-

I remember the day he delivered the package, Bill’s main concern was his wife’s health. He was worried and felt she was much too young to have health problems, just didn’t seem right. …So I hope those of you who remember the colorful character with his loud ties and bold hats and coats will pause for just a few minutes this holiday and think back on a favorite memory of Bill – whether it was a kind deed he did, a gift you received from him, or maybe a practical joke you pulled on him.

Smile and think of him and remember that today he would wish you a very Merry Christmas and maybe sign a card with “Love 2 U – Bill.”

Red Cross bring Christmas spirit to victims of storm Associated Press

HOLLY SPRINGS — Some Mississippi residents spent their Christmas giving rather than receiving this year.

The American Red Cross of North Mississippi’s disaster program manager, Nicholas Garbacz, says members of the Marine Corps on Friday helped turn the Eddie Smith MultiPurpose Center in Holly Springs into a substitute Santa’s Workshop.

The Marines donated bundles of toys for those who lost every-

thing — including presents under their Christmas trees — during this week’s killer storms.

Two of the seven people killed in Mississippi were from Marshall County, which includes Holly Springs.

Garbacz says dozens of children and their families picked up a toy or two Friday and other items they might need to help on their path to recovery.

He says it was a wonderful experience for those giving and for those getting.

Alcorn County jobless rate dips to 5.2 percent

Alcorn County unemployment moved down slightly to 5.2 percent in November, comparing favorably with last month and a year ago.

Octoberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s revised unadjusted rate was 5.4 percent, and the year-ago figure was 5.8 percent, according to labor data released Tuesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unadjusted rate moved down from 5.9 percent in October to 5.8 percent, while the seasonally adjusted rate increased from 5.9 percent to 6 percent.

The county had 820 jobless for the month, compared to 840 in October and 860 in No-

vember 2014. The number counted as employed was 14,920, compared to 14,840 in October and 14,050 a year earlier.

The month brought 74 new claims for unemployment insurance, compared to 70 a year ago, and 453 continued claims, compared to 477 a year ago. Benefits paid in the county totaled $56,072, compared to $67,091 a year ago.

Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment decreased 800 over the month but was 10,100 higher than one year ago. Industry sectors registering the largest monthly employment losses were government and professional & business services.

Rankin County led

the state at 3.7 percent, while Issaquena County had the highest rate at 14.2 percent.

Regional and state unemployment rates were little changed in November, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Twenty-seven states had unemployment rate decreases from October; 11 states had increases; and 12 states and the District of Columbia had no change. Forty-five states and the District of Columbia had unemployment rate decreases from a year earlier; four states had increases; and one state had no change.

The national jobless rate was unchanged from October at 5 percent and was 0.8 percentage point lower than in November 2014.

Carson looks for campaign balance on foreign affairs

STORM LAKE, Iowa â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson rode his outsider image, calm demeanor and compelling life story to the top of a chaotic GOP field earlier this fall.

Since then, however, the retired neurosurgeon has fumbled on foreign policy, lashed out publicly at scrutiny of his life story and has had to referee a tug-of-war among his closest advisers -- all while watching his rivals capitalize on his troubles.

But six weeks before voting begins, Carsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign insists that he is still poised to win in first-to-vote Iowa, where Carson plans to concentrate his campaign through to the Feb. 1 caucus.

The blitz comes amid lingering questions about his overall readiness for the job. His aides acknowledge that national front-runner Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who some polls show as the new leader in Iowa, have commandeered the spotlight in a Republican race, the focus of which has shifted to national security following mass attacks at home and abroad.

The candidate himself remains unwavering. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter; all I have to do is tell the truth,â&#x20AC;? the Carson said Friday -- day two of a weeklong swing through Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the first three states voting for a would-be nominee.

Barry Bennett said Carson maintains a broad appeal and has teams mobilizing on his behalf in Iowa and South Carolina, states where evangelical and antiestablishment conservatives are in excess. That, Bennett said, guarantees Carson will perform well enough in February balloting to be strong heading into March, when more than half of the delegates required to win the nomination will be at stake.

Bennett said Carsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Iowa staff still has 35,000 firm commitments from Republicans who say they will attend caucuses on his behalf. If Carson actually attracts that much support on Feb. 1, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d almost certainly finish at or near the top: Mike Huckabee drew 40,000 caucus-goers to win the state in 2008; Rick Santorum needed just less than 30,000 to nip Mitt Romney four years later. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working on our data for six months or so,â&#x20AC;? Bennett said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know who they are. I feel good about Iowa. I feel good about South Carolina.â&#x20AC;?

Reflecting where the campaign believes Carsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advantage rests, Bennett says the effort in both states will focus heavily on churches and their members who consider themselves evangelical voters.

Yet some of the same candidates outflanking Carson on foreign policy also have strength among evangelicals, support from whom the doctor is banking on.

Cruz has endorsements from Iowa power broker, Bob Vander Plaats, who backed surprise caucus winner Santorum in 2012, and the influential Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, among others.

When asked about Carson claims to have of 35,000 committed Iowa supporters, Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have no response to thatâ&#x20AC;? and walked away.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fragile equilibrium for Carson. He must sell himself as a credible commander-in-chief and, even if he does, he could still lose while campaigning on his perceived strength among evangelicals.

Alabama tornado adds to storm woes Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A Christmastime wave of severe weather continued Friday as a tornado touched down in Jefferson County, Alabama, including through the southwest portion of Birmingham, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest city.

Witnesses spotted the funnel outside the city about 5 p.m. An hour later, the National Weather Service confirmed that first responders were on the scene along Jefferson Avenue in a working class neighborhood about eight miles from downtown Birmingham.

Lt. Sean Edwards, a Birmingham police spokesman, said trees are down and people were trapped inside damaged houses but there were no imme-

diate reports of injuries or deaths. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Details are still sketchy,â&#x20AC;? said Jason Holmes, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Weather radar Friday evening showed an intense system along the Interstate 20/59 corridor west of Birmingham, with the storm moving eastward. Flooding was reported in counties throughout the region, as heavy rain continued to fall.

The Alabama tornado is the latest development in an ongoing series of storms that has hammered the South during Christmas week.

Elsewhere in the region, where the weather had calmed, dozens of people faced Christmas having lost their homes and pos-

Firefighters help Santa after car fire SALT LAKE CITY â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A stranded Santa Claus whose car caught fire Christmas morning is sure to put one northern Utah fire department on his nice list next year.

Steven Macey, a Santa-for-hire dressed in a red suit and beard, was on his way to deliver presents at a home when his car overheated and caught fire around 6:30 a.m. Friday, according to Lone Peak Fire Battalion Chief Joseph McRae. Macey, 66, was not injured.

He has been portraying Santa for decades.

After making appearances at Christmas Eve parties until 1 a.m., he headed to an early Christmas morning appointment at a home in Alpine, a city about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Macey said his older car began smoking after he climbed a snowy hill. He got out of the car and retrieved his St. Nick coat, belt and bells before moving away and calling 911.

A passing driver stopped and let him wait in their vehicle until firefighters arrived. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were stunned when I came walking down the road â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a Santa,â&#x20AC;? Macey said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They all wanted pictures.â&#x20AC;?

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but the car was destroyed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to have to go back to using his sleigh,â&#x20AC;? McRae said.

Woman eyes job as Oxford firefighter OXFORD â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A softball coach from North Carolina is the first female hired by the Oxford Fire Department with hopes of becoming a full-time firefighter.

The Oxford Eagle reports 27-year-old Brittany McKinney moved to Oxford about four months ago and in October applied to become a firefighter.

She has no previous experience and will spend the next six months working at the fire department helping the firefighters, attending training classes and learning the ins and outs of being a firefighter.

In April, she will attend the firefighter academy and, if she passes, she will be the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first female firefighter.

Fire Chief Cary Sallis said McKinney is one of four women who applied but was the only one who passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She impressed everyone during her interview,â&#x20AC;? Sallis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Her ability to complete the CPAT and her determination in doing that put her above some of the other candidates. No one had any reservations in selecting her.â&#x20AC;?

She was officially hired Nov. 30.

McKinney was a Division I softball coach at North Carolina State and UNC-Greensboro. She played softball for UNCChapel Hill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been my passion to be a servant to the community,â&#x20AC;? McKinney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was coaching and playing softball professionally because it was what I always knew.

But I also knew this was the career path I wanted to follow.â&#x20AC;? Â

â&#x20AC;&#x153;With my dad passing in February, I want to spend more time with my mom,â&#x20AC;? Long said.

Long is leaving a department where he started as the first officer hired by the city. Now 61, Long worked his way up through the ranks and was appointed chief in 1989. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is rare that you ever see a city start a police department from scratch. Most law enforcement agencies have been around hundreds of years. It was very exciting because it was a chance to do everything right the first time. You didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to inherit the mistakes of everybody else,â&#x20AC;? said Long.

Long was one of four officers on the force. That was in 1980 and he said Southaven was â&#x20AC;&#x153;wide openâ&#x20AC;? with lounges dotting U.S. 51. With them, he said, came crime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We worked so hard because remember for so long, all the lounges and gambling places had never had law enforcement supervision,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the city fathers and the citizens had a vision that they wanted for their city and it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t include most of those things.â&#x20AC;? Charter group will delay 1 of 2 schools JACKSON â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth charter school will delay its opening until fall 2017.

Marian Schutte, executive director of the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board, said operator RePublic Schools notified the board of the delay earlier this month.

RePublic, based in Nashville, Tennessee, will proceed with plans

to open a school serving grades 5-8 in north Jackson. However, it will delay plans to open a second school serving grades K-8 on the same campus. The second school, to be called Joel E. Smilow Collegiate, would be the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first school serving lower elementary grades.

RePublic Founding Director Ravi Gupta said the group wants more time to refine its plans for teaching younger children. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Elementary is a new model for us,â&#x20AC;? Gupta said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done elementary before, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just not sure we have an airtight plant to start an excellent school.â&#x20AC;?

Gupta said RePublic is examining school models to allow for more creativity and collaboration, different than its strictly structured middle schools.

The organization opened Reimagine Prep, one of Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first two charter schools, in south Jackson in August. That school has only fifth-graders this year but plans to serve grades 5-8. A second 5-8 school, Midtown Public Charter School, also opened in Jackson in August.

The delay comes as state leaders could consider easing some rules governing charter schools. Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and other charter school supporters say they want to allow students to cross district lines to attend charter schools in other public school districts. Because many Mississippi districts are small, the prohibition on crossing district lines is one factor making locations in rural areas unattractive to charter schools.

AP picks Pharoah as top story

NEW YORK — American Pharoah’s sweep of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown since 1978 was selected the sports story of the year Thursday in an annual vote conducted

by The Associated Press.

Eighty-two ballots were submitted from U.S. editors and news directors.

Voters were asked to rank the top five sports stories of the year, with the firstplace story receiving five points, the second-place story four points and so on.

American Pharoah’s Triple Crown win received 317 points and 43 firstplace votes.

The No. 2 sports story, the “Deflategate” scandal that ensnared Super Bowl-winning Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, had 191 points and 13 firstplace votes.

Here are 2015’s top 10 stories: 1. TRIPLE CROWN: In the 37 years since Affirmed became the 11th Triple Crown winner — the longest drought in the sport’s history — an unlucky 13 horses had won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness only to fail to complete the sweep at the Belmont Stakes.

But American Pharoah took the lead from the start of the grueling 1 1/2-mile race and kept extending it. The bay colt with the unusually short tail went on to win by 5 1/2 lengths for jockey Victor Espinoza, trainer Bob Baffert and owner Ahmed Zayat.

It was Baffert’s fourth Triple Crown try and Espinoza’s third, both records.

American Pharoah went on to cap his spectacular year with a victory in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

He then retired at age 3 and will stand at stud for $200,000, one of the highest prices for a horse in his first year as a stallion.

2. DEFLATEGATE: The New England Patriots routed the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC championship game Jan. 18 to return to the Super Bowl, but the on-field action was soon overshadowed by the scandal dubbed “Deflategate.”

4. WARRIORS WIN: Too small, not athletic enough. That was the knock both on the Golden State Warriors as a whole and on their star, Stephen Curry. Instead, the sweet-shooting Warriors won their first NBA title in four decades behind the league’s MVP, beating LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in six games.

Turns out that Golden State can play even better. The Warriors opened the following season with a record 24-0 start.

USM goes from 0-12 to bowl The Associated Press

DALLAS — Southern Mississippi was coming off a 12win season and Conference USA championship when cornerback Kalan Reed decided to join the Golden Eagles.

Unlike most everyone else in that 2012 signing class, Reed stayed through the ensuing 0-12 season and a coaching change. He gets to play his final game in a bowl at a historic site.

Conference USA runner-up Southern Miss (9-4) closes out its season today against the Pac-12’s Washington (66) in the Heart of Dallas Bowl at Cotton Bowl Stadium.

“Kalan has stuck with it when a lot of our guys didn’t.

As we tried to change over the culture and tried to change things and keep building, a lot of guys left,” third-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken said. “Shame on them. They missed out on this unbelievable opportunity and team we had this year.”

Reed, who has 19 pass breakups and four interceptions as a senior, said he never considered leaving.

But it was admittedly difficult going without a win as a freshman and being 4-32 overall his first three seasons

at the school where Super Bowl quarterback Brett Favre played from 1987-90.

“We talked about turning the program around because it hasn’t been where we know it should be lately,” Reed said. “It means everything to get nine wins.”

Washington won its last two games to get bowl eligible. The Huskies are playing in their sixth different bowl over a six-season span after seven years without a postseason game, including their own 0-12 season in 2008.

“We didn’t know if we’d be going to a bowl. Really proud of our team to keep fighting and battling and get a chance to come to this historic place,” said coach Chris Petersen, wrapping up his second season with the Huskies after eight bowls in a row with Boise State. “And to get matched up with a really, re-

ally good opponent, I mean, that’s what bowl games are supposed to be about.”

Some things to watch in the sixth Heart of Dallas Bowl: OFFENSIVE ERUPTION: After scuffling through the early part of the season, Washington’s offense scored 52 points against Oregon State and 45 against Washington State (though helped by three defensive touchdowns) in the final two games the Huskies had to win to become bowl eligible. The offensive improvement actually started in a loss at Arizona State on Nov. 14 when Washington had a season-high 547 total yards but committed four turnovers in the 27-17 loss.

RUNNING WILD: Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens and his 4,000-plus passing yards get a lot of the hype, but the Golden Eagles’ offense is just as reliant on a very effective running game.

Jalen Richard (1,098 yards) and Ito Smith (1,088) make Southern Miss one of just two teams nationally with two 1,000-yard rushers — the other is Nevada.

MYLES AND MILES: Washington running back Myles Gaskin put in the finest season by a freshman in school

history, rushing for 1,121 yards and 10 touchdowns even though he didn’t fully take over as the featured ball carrier until the fifth game.

Gaskin closed the regular season rushing for at least 100 yards in his final three games and six of the last eight. He had 138 yards and two touchdowns against Washington State and now faces a Southern Miss defense that gave up just 141 yards per game on the ground.

SOME HISTORY: This is the first meeting ever between Washington and Southern Miss, though Petersen has faced the Golden Eagles four times — and beat them each time from 2007-13, the last a 60-7 win by Boise State in 2013.

SHUT-DOWN SECONDARY: Led by all-Pac-12 selections Budda Baker and Sidney Jones, Washington’s secondary became the backbone of a surprisingly strong defense.

The Huskies led the Pac-12 in total defense (349.9 yards per game) and scoring defense (17.8) and was second in the conference at stopping the pass. Jones was tied for the conference lead with 13 passes defended and third with four interceptions.

Warriors prevail in NBA Finals rematch The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. — Draymond Green had 22 points and 15 rebounds and the Golden State Warriors got defensive in their NBA Finals rematch against Cleveland, beating the Cavaliers 89-83 on Friday.

Stephen Curry added 19 points and Klay Thompson had 18 for the Warriors, who improved to 28-1 by winning their 32nd straight regularseason home game. Instead of doing it with 3-pointers, defending champion Golden State maintained its edge over Cleveland by limiting the Cavaliers to 32 percent shooting.

LeBron James scored 25 points to lead the Cavaliers.

They had their six-game winning streak snapped.

The Cavaliers were shorthanded when they lost the final to the Warriors in six games, missing power forward Kevin Love the entire

series with a shoulder injury and losing point guard Kyrie Irving to a knee injury late in the first game.

Having both those players healthy for the rematch did little to help Cleveland.

Love scored just 10 points on 5-for-16 shooting, and Irving missed 11 of 15 shots in a 13-point game.

With those two struggling, the Warriors built a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter following a jumper by Thompson and a layup from Green.

But James responded with a pair of dunks and a blocked shot on Thompson before Love’s tip-in made it 81-77 with just over 2 minutes to play.

James missed two free throws after Cleveland got

another stop and Curry responded with a pair of layups around J.R. Smith’s 3-pointer to make it 85-80 with 57.6 seconds to play.

James shot an air ball from 3 with 12.7 seconds to play to end Cleveland’s comeback attempt.

Elsewhere: HEAT 94, PELICANS 88, OT — At Miami, Chris Bosh had 30 points and 10 rebounds, Dwyane Wade added 19 points to move into No. 3 on the NBA’s Christmas Day list and Miami survived some shaky moments to beat New Orleans.

At Clemson, religion and football converge

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney pats Howard’s Rock and then leads his team down the hill into a hyped Memorial Stadium. There are few pregame rituals in college football as recognizable as the Tigers’ blood-pumping entrance.

But before Death Valley becomes one of the most raucous sites in sports, it falls as quiet as church while a prayer is said by a local religious leader over the public address system.

Faith and football go together at Clemson, as they do at many universities. Here, though, where Swinney’s devotion to Christianity is a pronounced part of his and the team’s identity, may be one of most prominent displays of religion at a public university.

“As a Christian I hope a light shines through me,” Swinney said. “I don’t want to be persecuted for that and I don’t try to persecute somebody else because they have different beliefs.”

The convergence of religion and football has its critics. There has been scrutiny — and a re-examination of rules — for how Christianity has been interwoven into the program at Clemson.

Swinney said his faith has helped build a culture that is the foundation for the team’s success. The top-ranked Tigers enter the College Football Playoff semifinal at the

Swinney was raised in a family with divorced parents.

He said he went to church when his mother dragged him there. In high school, when he was searching for guidance, Swinney found his way to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The turning point was an FCA talk by one of his idols, former Alabama wide receiver Joey Jones, who is now the head coach at South Alabama.

“I thought he was going to talk about touchdowns and all the money he made playing for the Falcons and for the USFL Stallions,” Swinney said. “All he talked about

was his faith in Christ and his relationship there. If you’re not saved and you want to be saved here’s what you have to do. I realized I wasn’t saved.

“Joey Jones led me to the Lord that night.”

Swinney dismisses any suggestion that he and his staff cross the divide between church and state, and Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said a review by the school in 2014 supported his coach. Radakovich points out careful guidelines are followed and the pregame invocation is submitted to school officials for approval before it is read on Saturday.

“People who are doing this, they live in today’s world and they know and understand that this is a unique, special honor for them to be able to do that and they understand what the audience is and what the law of the state is,” Radakovich said.

While Swinney said his program is welcoming to all, there is no doubt it has a strong attraction for those who have similar beliefs to the man in charge.

“I know for me personally, I’m a Christian, and I don’t have to be somebody different whenever I come into work,” co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said.

All-America quarterback Deshaun Watson, a cross hanging from the chain he wears around his neck, said his faith played a small part in his deciding to attend Clem-

son.

“But it was a part of it, of course, knowing that my coach is a man of God,” Watson said.

Former Clemson receiver Aaron Kelly played for the Tigers when Swinney was receivers coach and when he first became head coach in 2008. Kelly, a Jehovah’s Witness, said he didn’t feel comfortable going to church with the team or taking part in Bible studies and it was never a problem.

“You just knew that that’s something that was important to him. It wasn’t something he hid or shied away from. You knew it up front, but it was nothing that he ever forced on us and made us feel like we had to do that,” Kelly said.

Swinney did not bring Christianity to Clemson football. In fact, in some ways it is what led him to Clemson.

His predecessor and first boss at Clemson, Tommy Bowden, was also a devout Christian.

When Bowden offered Swinney the job as receivers coach in 2003, they both agreed to pray on it before he accepted.

Clemson’s at-times overt displays of Christianity — including a player being baptized after practice with coaches and teammates watching — drew the attention of the nonprofit watchdog group Freedom From Religion Foundation in 2014.

Getting that far hadn’t been easy, though. Eleven of Williams’ victories at the majors came in three sets, including eight when she rallied from a set down. 7. WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Four years after a heartbreaking loss to Japan in the Women’s World Cup final, Carli Lloyd and her U.S. teammates made absolutely sure there would be no repeat in the rematch.

Lloyd scored a hat trick in the first 16 minutes as the Americans won 5-2 in Canada for their first title since 1999.

With record TV audiences back home watching the prime-time matches, the U.S. looked shaky early in the tournament before some timely lineup changes by coach Jill Ellis put Lloyd in position for a scoring spree. All-time goals leader Abby Wambach got to end her career

8. ROYALS CROWNED: Kansas City was one win from a world championship in 2014, yet the small-ball Royals weren’t considered favorites in 2015. The players in the clubhouse knew better, and they came from behind yet again in Game 5 of the World Series to beat the New York Mets in 12 innings for their first title since 1985.

9. MISSOURI FOOTBALL: Just two days after Missouri’s football players threatened to boycott a game, the president of the university system stepped down. Tensions about race and other student welfare issues had been simmering for weeks before the athletes joined the protest in support of a graduate student who was holding a hunger strike.

As Tigers defensive end Charles Harris put it: “Let this be a testament to all of the athletes across the country that you do have power.”

OHIO STATE TAKES FIRST CFP TITLE: The first College Football Playoff did exactly what it was supposed to, awarding a championship chance to a squad that seemed eliminated from title contention after an early-season loss and whose presence in the new four-team bracket was widely debated. Behind thirdstring quarterback Cardale Jones, Ohio State upset No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon to kick off a new era in the sport.

FFRF sent a letter of complaint to Clemson, saying the football program promotes Christianity in a way that violates constitutional guidelines.

An attorney for Clemson responded to the complaint, writing the foundation “misconstrued important facts and made incorrect statements of the law.”

Radakovich said after receiving the complaint the university called on its legal counsel to ensure policies were being followed.

“In that review, we found that we were,” Radakovich said.

Radakovich said Swinney and his staff did not need to change their practices, but the review was an opportunity to provide some clarification as to what is a mandatory team activity.

“We go back and make sure in this particular case that voluntary is there. Where it may have been understood before and spoken you don’t want to have a team sheet, a calendar or other pieces of paper out there that says this activity without that word there, even though it’s understood,” Radakovich said. “Saying what we mean, I think is real important to be able to go through.”

Another report by the Freedom From Religion

Foundation earlier this year cited football programs at 25 universities, including Clemson, most of the Southeastern Conference, Florida State, Wisconsin and Washington, as employing team chaplains in ways that are inappropriate for public schools.

“One of the problems with a program like this at a public school it’s not just those who participate in it but those who are excluded from it,” said Patrick Elliott, a staff attorney for FFRF. “If I were an atheist player I would not go to Clemson University.”

Radakovich doesn’t necessarily see that as a problem.

“You’re not drafted to Clemson,” he said. “You have choices and you choose to come and go to this academic institution and you choose to play for these coaches.”

As for Swinney, he hopes to build more than winning football teams, but he also knows that wins and losses determine whether he stays employed.

“We’re going to play the best football players.

We don’t play the best Christians. I can assure you that,” he said. “We probably wouldn’t have five 10-plus win seasons if that was the standard.”

Spartans relish underdog role vs. Tide

EAST LANSING, Mich.

— Perhaps it’s appropriate that Michigan State’s opponent in a playoff semifinal will be Alabama — the one program that makes pretty much everyone look like an underdog.

Throughout the Spartans’ rise under coach Mark Dantonio, they have been fueled by an unyielding sense that no matter what they accomplish, there will always be doubters. Sometimes the disrespect toward Michigan State is obvious for everyone to see, and other times it feels a bit more contrived — but there’s no denying that Dantonio’s players feed off it.

“I would rather be the underdog, I guess,” Spartans defensive back Demetrious Cox said. “It’s a better feeling when you have to prove people wrong.”

To understand Michigan State’s attitude — the perpetual chip on the program’s shoulder — you must first look about 65 miles down the road at the school’s biggest rival.

Michigan, with all its tradition and national prestige, dominated its series with the Spartans for about 40 years, and the Wolver-

ines do not even consider Michigan State their top rival. That distinction, of course, belongs to Ohio State.

After Dantonio took over in East Lansing, he lost his first meeting with Michigan in 2007. Following that game, Wolverines running back Mike Hart infamously compared Michigan State to a “little brother” and the Spartans have won seven of eight in the series since.

“When you come here, and you’re an out-of-state guy, you really don’t know about the Michigan rivalry like that,” said Cox, who is from Pennsylvania. “You know about it, but you don’t really know until you get here and you see the ‘little brother’ video, and you see all the videos that they play in meeting rooms.”

Last year, after the Spartans beat the Wolverines 35-11, Michigan State was upset because a Michigan player had driven a tent stake into the ground before the game in an effort to fire up his teammates.

The gesture went largely unnoticed until the Spartans made a big issue of it. When the Wolverines are involved, there may be no slight too small to get

Michigan State’s attention.

Now the Spartans have to beat Alabama, the national champion in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Dantonio has downplayed his team’s penchant for using an opponent’s lofty reputation as motivation.

“Everybody keeps saying we have a chip on our shoulder all the time.

Maybe it’s because I don’t smile up here often enough,” Dantonio said.

“The chip on our shoulder is relative to us, how we play, how we respond. Has nothing to do with who we are playing against, because we have a great deal of respect for everybody we play against. But the chip on our shoulder is for — it’s just, we need to get ourselves ready to play.”

But Michigan State can always find critics to silence. This is a team that has won 38 of its last 42 games, yet nobody needs to remind the Spartans who is supposed to contend for national championships and who isn’t.

For example, Michigan State’s last five recruiting classes were ranked 27th, 37th, 47th, 19th and 18th

by Scout.com. Alabama’s were ranked seventh, second, fourth, first and

second. So even though the Spartans have earned plenty of respect this year as playoff participants, don’t expect all this glamour to change Michigan State’s approach.

“We weren’t recruited that way, so that mindset never kind of set in for us — to think that we’re owed anything,” defensive lineman Joel Heath said. “I think you’ve got to be aware of that with younger guys, guys coming in thinking that they’re entitled to something, but as of now, we don’t really have that mindset.”

True to form, Michigan State has done some of its best work this season as an underdog. The Spartans won at Michigan when the Wolverines botched a punt on the final play, and Michigan State beat Ohio State despite an injury that prevented star quarterback Connor Cook from playing.

After winning as a favorite in the Big Ten title game against Iowa, third-ranked Michigan State is back to being the underdog against second-ranked Alabama in Thursday night’s matchup.

Against Michigan State, Alabama opened as a 91⁄2-point favorite. Business as usual for the Tide.

Some military discharges mean no benefits

ST. LOUIS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; No medical or mental health care. No subsidized college or work training.

For many who leave the U.S. military with less-than-honorable discharges, including thousands who suffered injuries and anguish in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, standard veterans benefits are off limits.

The discharge serves as a scarlet letter of dishonor, and the effects can be severe: Exmilitary members with mental health problems or post-traumatic stress disorder canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn to Veterans Affairs hospitals or clinics; those who want to go to college arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t eligible for the GI Bill; the jobless get no assistance for career training; the homeless are excluded from vouchers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an indelible mark of their service that follows them for the rest of their lives into the workforce, through background checks, social relationships, and it precludes them from getting the kind of support that most veterans enjoy,â&#x20AC;? said Phil Carter, an Iraq War vet and senior fellow at the Center for A New American Security.

The Department of Defense said of nearly 207,000 people who left the military last year, just 9 percent received whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;bad paper.â&#x20AC;?

Still, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more than 18,000 people last year and more than 352,000 since 2000, Defense Department data shows.

Phil Carter Iraq War vet and senior fellow at the Center for A New American Security Colorado Republican whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the House Armed Services Committee, believes many of those men and women suffered battle-related problems that affected their behavior, especially PTSD and traumatic brain injury. A 2005 study showed Marines deployed to combat who were diagnosed with PTSD were 11 times more likely to receive less-than-honorable discharges, said Brad Adams, an attorney who works with the San Francisco-based organization Swords to Plowshares.

Josh Redmyer, 30, served in the Marines for seven years, including three stints in Iraq, where he watched a close friend die and developed PTSD. Redmyer said he developed alcohol and drug addictions that led to bad behavior, and he received an other-than-honorable discharge in 2012. He said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s survived suicide attempts and â&#x20AC;&#x153;near-deathâ&#x20AC;? overdoses.

Now living in California, Redmyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s working as a delivery driver and trying to restore his VA medical benefits. He said he takes responsibility for â&#x20AC;&#x153;mistake after mistake after mis-

take,â&#x20AC;? but canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand how someone who risked his life for his country canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get treatment for PTSD. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What it did to my life after what I gave to them, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ethical or moral or fair,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Varying levels of bad paper discharges exist. A general discharge is for those whose service was generally satisfactory, but who engaged in minor misconduct or received non-judicial punishment. Recipients are usually eligible for VA medical and dental services, VA home loans and burial in national cemeteries, but canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receive educational benefits through the GI Bill.

Virtually no post-military benefits are available below that level.

An other-than-honorable discharge is an administrative action for those with behavior problems such as violence or use of illegal drugs. A bad conduct discharge is punishment for a military crime, and dishonorable discharges are for offenses such as murder or desertion. With those discharges,

the VA doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider the former service members veterans for the purposes of VA benefits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is a small percentage of folks who were court-martialed and convicted, and they have earned their bad paper,â&#x20AC;?

Carter said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The vast majority of this population was discharged administratively, generally because of some minor misconduct.â&#x20AC;?

Maj. Ben Sakrisson, a Defense Department spokesman, said there is â&#x20AC;&#x153;substantial due processâ&#x20AC;? for all cases where people receive a less-than-honorable discharge. Its statistics show that last year, 4,143 service members received otherthan-honorable discharges, 637 received bad conduct discharges and 157 were dishonorably discharged.

Once people are discharged, the Department of Veterans Affairs can extend medical and mental health benefits on a case-by-case basis to those whose disabilities were serviceconnected, the VA said.

But Adams said that recourse is help to very few. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The onus is on the veteran,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The standards have imposed a very high burden.â&#x20AC;?

Studies show those who are less-than-honorably discharged are far more likely to end up in prison than honorably discharged veterans, and more likely to be suicidal. Jobs are harder to get because background checks highlight an undesirable military discharge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have a hard time main-

taining employment and navigating the transition back to civilian life,â&#x20AC;? said Jamison Fargo, associate professor of psychology at Utah State University.

An analysis published this fall in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which Fargo co-wrote, tracked nearly 450,000 VA patients who served in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2001 to 2011. While 5.6 percent had general discharges for misconduct, they accounted for 28.1 percent of those whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been homeless within their first year out of the military.

That didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even take into account those with discharges that made them ineligible for VA care, and who were potentially more likely to be homeless.

Sakrisson said the Defense Department has made a â&#x20AC;&#x153;concerted effortâ&#x20AC;? to assist those with PTSD who seek to have their discharge upgraded, through media campaigns, outreach to advocacy groups and military service organizations, even tracking down homeless ex-service members identified by the VA. Coffman said a better approach would be for the military to work with troubled service members earlier, so more leave with honorable discharges.

And while being discharged for bad behavior might draw little sympathy, Adams said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking about people who have deployed multiple times, served in combat. That has to account for something.â&#x20AC;?

Historic preservation tax credits help businesses

D E A R ABBY: I recently went on a cruise with several other women.

I was friendly with one of them, but didn’t know the others.

I am over-

weight.

One of the other women, “Dolores,” was also overweight, heavier than me, in fact.

She’s very proud of being Christian, but she made the comment, in front of several other people, that she didn’t mind going places with me because with me around she didn’t feel so fat.

I was so stunned I remained silent.

Actually, I was afraid that if I spoke I’d say too much, but I felt very hurt and ashamed.

Even though I have tried to ignore it, this has bothered me for months and I don’t know what to do.

Should I say something to Dolores or continue to ignore it?

I don’t really want to be friends with her now because I don’t know what kind of snide remark may come out of her mouth

next. And I certainly don’t want to go anywhere with her again.

-- TAKEN ABACK IN TEXAS DEAR TAKEN ABACK: When mankind was created, a delete button should have been installed at the end of our tongues. However, it’s possible our creator thought common sense would suffice.

Obviously, Dolores was elsewhere when it was handed out.

While her comment was tactless, it says far more about how she feels about herself than it does about you. Because this is still bothering you, I don’t think it would be at all out of line for you to tell her how hurtful her comment was.

DEAR ABBY: I’m 17 and just started my junior year. I’m in an advanced program that my school offers because I want to get into an international college and need to take these classes to get noticed.

I’m just over a month in, and I’m losing it. I have a job, I play soccer and I’m the lead in a school production.

On top of that, I have an insane workload I wasn’t prepared for and I’m trying to cope with discovering that I’m not straight.

With everything going on, I’ve been having meltdowns nearly every day. I leave class

sometimes just to hide in the bathroom. I spend hours doing homework and still don’t get everything done I need to.

Last year, four or five of my classmates left school because of mental breakdowns in this program. I’m afraid I’m burning out, too.

What should I do?

Should I drop out of the program or seek help? -- SCARED AND STRESSED IN NEW YORK DEAR SCARED: The first thing to do is talk about all of this with a counselor at your school. If you are at the point where you must leave class and “hide,” you need more help than I can offer in a letter.

If counseling is available, or your course load can be modified, you should go in that direction.

But dropping out should be your last resort and only after having discussed it with your parents and your counselor, because there may be other options.

Dear Annie: Normally I don’t respond to newspaper columns, but I felt compelled to reply to the letter from “Please Leave Animals at Home.” She said her grandson was allergic to animals, and asked why people bring their pets into stores and place them in the carts where children sit. She said she’d had dogs, cats, pigs and horses and would never take them into a store. She mentioned one particular woman who had a dog wrapped in a blanket, seated in the cart.

First, animals are not allowed in the store unless they are service animals.

Some stores require that you put these animals on the floor and others require that you put them in your cart. She didn’t mention whether this woman’s dog was a service animal.

Service animals must be trained, and you must have a written note from your doctor. The animal must also have a vest and tags.

Many people are physically dependent on their animals. When I go into a store, 99 percent of the people love my dog and talk to me about him, and I cheerfully talk back. I’m not required to tell them the medical reason for my animal, but I will. If store management asks whether the dog is a service animal, I am required to show the paperwork.

Annie’s Mailbox My dog does not shed.

He does hospital and nursing home visits with me, attends church and is a youth group leader animal. I also have him certified as a therapy dog so it’s official when we visit.

He has sat for 12 hours with people who are in their last hours of life. We always ask before we go into a room to see whether someone wants a visit so we don’t upset anyone or approach those with allergies.

“Leave” should mind her own business. She should make a donation to an animal shelter or other charity of her choice.

Thank you for letting me vent and tell the other side of the story. — A. Dear A.: Service animals are a medical necessity. They are trained and clearly identifiable. They are not a problem, and we don’t believe “Leave” thought so, either.

Some stores do allow dogs of any kind, but there is a third variety known as “comfort animals.” These are important companions for people with severe emotional problems.

Unfortunately, many

people claim their pets are comfort animals when, in fact, they are not trained at all. Store owners and other proprietors are reluctant to argue with customers who insist that their dogs be allowed on the premises for fear that they will be sued for discriminating against those with disabilities. These issues need to be cleared up so that genuine comfort animals are recognized as such.

Here’s one more from an angry reader: Dear Annie: A simple Google search will reveal all stores and restaurants where dogs are allowed. If her grandson is that allergic, she should check each place she visits so she can prevent him from having an attack.

Kiddie tablets ‘grow up’ as competition grows

BY BREE FOWLER NEW YORK — Kiddie tablets have grown up.

Tablets designed just for kids are getting more sophisticated as they face increased competition from regular tablets. The new products also have better screens, speedier chips and fashionably slim bodies. They let older children do more, yet hold their hands until they’re ready for unsupervised access.

Although many of the tablets were originally conceived as educational toys for kids as old as middle schoolers, they’ve been more popular with younger children. Older kids have been apt to reject them in favor of their parents’ tablet or smartphone.

That shift has prompted companies to focus more on preschoolers and kindergarteners, as they create super-durable products that can withstand repeated abuse and develop games and apps that teach reading and math.

But now, some of those companies are looking to take back some of the sales to older kids that they’ve lost over the years, offering premium products — most with price tags of over $100 — that look and perform less like toys and more like the ones adults use.

BEND, Ore. — The FBI says a 28-year-old man faces federal and state charges after he robbed a credit union in Bend, then went on a shopping spree that included buying a Christmas tree he later used to try and hide from police.

The Oregonian reports that the FBI says Brett Gillispie-Comstock went into a Selco Community Credit Union twice on Dec. 16 before he walked to a teller, told her he was ready to open an account and handed her a note demanding $5,000.

He left with $1,373 in an envelope. The newspaper reports that Bend police officers found Gillispie-Comstock nearby about 40 minutes after the robbery and arrested him.

Authorities say Gillespie-Comstock told investigators that he and

Eric Levin, Kurio’s strategic director, said kids using children’s tablets are getting younger, as older kids gravitate toward adult products. Four years ago, he said, most Kurio users ranged from ages 6 to 12.

Now, half of them are 3 to 5.

Although older kids may be ready for adult tablets, the shift has left those 8 to 12 without age-appropriate devices, Levin says. The Smart tries to fix that.

Other makers of kids tablets have also gone high-end this year. Fuhu bills the Nabi Elev8 as a premium, 8-inch tablet.

Nonetheless, adult tablets remain popular with kids.

Amazon touts its Fire tablet as something the entire family can use, eliminating the need to buy something just for the kids.

“While I appreciate that might have led other companies to adjust their products, we’re upping our game based on what customers want in the best kid experience,” said Aaron Bromberg, senior manager of product management for Amazon Devices.

The tablet’s FreeTime app lets parents set up profiles for each kid, with access to only the content they approve. It also lets parents limit the amount of time spent on different kinds of content such as videos or apps.

For an additional fee, Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service offers more than 10,000 books, apps, games and videos geared toward kids ages 3 to 10.

Nonetheless, Amazon is selling a kids’ edition tablet for $100. It’s essentially Amazon’s bare-bones $50 Fire tablet packaged with a colorful protective bumper and a year’s subscription to FreeTime Unlimited.

It also comes with a two-year guarantee: If your kid breaks it, Amazon will replace it.

Study: Some cardiac arrest victims ignore signs

WASHINGTON — Sudden cardiac arrest may not always be so sudden: New research suggests a lot of people may ignore potentially life-saving warning signs hours, days, even a few weeks before they collapse.

Cardiac arrest claims about 350,000 U.S. lives a year. It’s not a heart attack, but worse: The heart abruptly stops beating, its electrical activity knocked out of rhythm. CPR can buy critical time, but so few patients survive that it’s been hard to tell if the longtime medical belief is correct that it’s a strike with little or no advance warning.

An unusual study that has closely tracked sudden cardiac arrest in

Portland, Oregon, for over a decade got around that roadblock, using interviews with witnesses, family and friends after patients collapse and tracking down their medical records.

About half of middleaged patients for whom symptom information could be found had experienced warning signs, mostly chest pain or shortness of breath, in the month before suffering a cardiac arrest, researchers reported Monday. The research offers the possibility of one day preventing some cardiac arrests if doctors could figure out how to find and treat the people most at risk.

“By the time the 911 call is made, it’s much too late for at least 90 percent of people,” said Dr. Sumeet Chugh of the Cedars-

“There’s this window of opportunity that we really didn’t know existed.”

Importantly, a fraction of patients considered their symptoms bad enough to call 911 before they collapsed, and they were most likely to survive.

That’s a reminder to the public not to ignore possible signs of heart trouble in hopes they’re just indigestion, said University of Pittsburgh emergency medicine specialist Dr. Clifton Callaway, who wasn’t involved in Monday’s study but praised it.

“Chest pain, shortness of breath — those are things you should come in the middle of the night to the emergency depart-

ment and get checked out,” said Callaway, who chairs the American Heart Association’s emergency care committee.

“We strongly recommend you don’t try to ride it out at home.”

Previous heart attacks, coronary heart disease, and certain inherited disorders that affect heartbeat all can increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

People known to be at high risk may receive an implanted defibrillator to shock the heart back into rhythm. But cardiac arrest is such a public health problem that the Institute of Medicine last summer urged a national campaign to teach CPR, so more bystanders know how to help.

Monday’s data from the Oregon Sudden Un-

expected Death Study examined records for nearly 1,100 people ages 35 to 65 who suffered a cardiac arrest between 2002 and 2012.

For about a quarter of patients, researchers could find no information about whether they experienced symptoms — making it impossible to say just how common warning signs really are.

But of the remaining 839 patients, half had evidence of at least one symptom in the previous month, the study found.

For most, the symptoms began within 24 hours of their collapse, although some came a week before and a few up to a month.

Chest pain was most common in men, while women were more likely to experience shortness of breath. Other symptoms

included fainting and heart palpitations.

Chugh had no way to determine symptom severity. But only 19 percent of patients called 911 about symptoms, mostly people with already diagnosed heart disease or who were having recurrent symptoms. Their survival was 32 percent, compared with 6 percent for other patients. Partly that’s because a fifth of those 911 callers had their cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Stay tuned: The study is just the start of more research to better predict who is at highest risk for cardiac arrest, and determine how to target them without panicking people who’d do fine with general heart disease treatment, Chugh cautioned.

X-ray vision? Technology makes it reality for $300 Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — X-ray vision, a comic book fantasy for decades, is becoming a reality in a lab at MIT. A group of researchers led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Dina Katabi has developed software that uses variations in radio signals to recognize human silhouettes through walls and track their movements.

Researchers say the technology will be able to help health care providers and families keep closer tabs on toddlers and the elderly, and it could be a new strategic tool for law enforcement and the military.

“Think of it just like cameras, except that it’s not a camera,” said Fadel Adib, a researcher on the MIT team developing the device.

“It’s a sensor that can monitor people and allow you to control de-

vices just by pointing at them,” he said.

Work began in 2012 to determine how wireless signals could be used to “see” what’s happening in another room, said Katabi, who directs the MIT Wireless Center.

“At first we were just interested ... can you at all use wireless signals to detect what’s happening in occluded spaces, behind a wall, couch, something like that,” Katabi said.

“It turned out that we were able to detect that. And when we figured out we could detect that, we started asking more advanced questions: Could we use it to detect exactly how people are moving in a space if they are behind a wall?”

The device displays the signal on a screen, where the person’s movements can be tracked in real time. It depicts the target as a red dot moving around the room, occupying a

chair and speeding up or slowing down.

The wireless signals used to track a person’s motions also can measure the individual’s breathing and heart rate — and potentially identify the person based on the shape of his or her skeleton, said researcher Zach Kabelac.

“The person won’t be wearing anything on them, and the person it’s tracking doesn’t even need to know the device is there,” Kabelac said.

“If something unfortunate happens to them, like a fall, the device will contact the caregiver that they chose to alert” by generating a text message or an email, he added.

That makes health care applications especially interesting, Katabi said. But she also sees military and law enforcement possibilities — particularly in hostage situations.
