All the rage Outdoor fireplaces, fire pits increase in popularity

By Kimberly Shelton for Crossroads Magazine Bringing warmth and ambiance to backyards, patios and other open-aired spaces, fire pits and outdoor fireplaces have become all the rage.

An extension of a person’s home, outdoor kitchens have also spiked in popularity as they allow their owners to enjoy the beauty of nature and a chance to spend time with loved ones while preparing meals.

As a business owner in the landscaping industry since 1991, Chris Duncan, owner of All Seasons, Inc. has witnessed first hand the rise in interest.

“There has been a huge increase in inquiries about outdoor living areas,” said Duncan, who established All Seasons in 2009. “I think this generation enjoys the outdoors more. People work all day and want to come home to a place they can relax and enjoy outside. They want to better utilize their outdoors spaces and get out of the house more.”

Specializing in outdoor foliage, appliances and decor, the 42-year-old has installed many different types of fireplaces and pits over the years.

“All the feedback I’ve received has been positive,” he said. “People really seem to like them and are taking advantage of every opportunity possible to venture out for some fresh air.”

Available in a number of sizes, colors and designs, people have several options to consider.

“You should first look at the space you have available and design a living area which best fits your needs,” said Duncan.

“There are different types of stone to choose from as well as gas or wood burning pits and fireplaces.”

“I recommend that purchasers not overdo it and buy a fireplace if all they need is a fire pit,” he continued. “They should install what is functional and realistic to their needs. Of course, I want to sell the biggest, but it is more important to me that my customers are happy and enjoy what they’ve purchased from me.”

A 1997 graduate of Corinth High School, the Alcorn County native holds an Associate’s degree in forestry and

landscaping and has been with the Corinth Fire Department for 20 years.

His advice on fire pit/ fireplace safety: “Always be mindful of the weather and exercise caution on extremely windy and dry days,” advises the captain. “Make sure you keep leaves and other debris cleared from around your pits and outdoor fireplaces and never leave small children or pets unattended. Kossuth native makes wigs, costumes for The American Ballet Theatre in New York City

By Carol Humphreys for Crossroads magazine In a note given to Julie Kent, former principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, the great ballerina Natalia Makrova wrote, “Someone once said beauty can save the world. What a great responsibility you have on your shoulders.”

Kossuth native Jill Elaina Haley has taken these words to heart. As a member of New York City’s influential performing arts community, Haley gets to work with the best in the field as assistant hair and makeup artisan for The American Ballet Theatre, the nation’s premier ballet company.

After eight years of training and perfecting her skill, the 26-year-old helps bring wig designers’ artistic visions to life. Haley’s talent can be seen in the ethereal beauty of dancers’ lavish costumes and headdresses, lighting up the stage. Or in the fun, quirky stagecraft of an Off-Broadway production.

Haley specializes in all types of wig building for stage and film. She credits her mentors for the instruction and inspiration she received along the way.

After graduating from Kossuth High School in 2008, the talented artist knew she wanted to use her passion for hair and makeup in the entertainment field. Haley found her niche in the theater of arts program at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

“When I graduated from high school, I was interested in hair, make-up, entertainment and art in general. It was under the direction of the Theater of Arts department head Christopher Schager, I started getting my feet wet in these subjects,” said the 2010 NEMCC graduate.

After obtaining her associate’s degree focusing on theater and art, Haley continued to develop her skills at the University of Mississippi. It was at Ole Miss with its much larger theater program, she began learning more about wig design and stage make-up.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in theater arts and minor in studio art from in 2012, the UM graduate started focusing on graduate school. www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

“I was unsure of my next step until a friend of mine told me about a program in North Carolina at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts,” said Haley.

The conservatory is one of the top theatrical design and production schools in the world. Haley became a student at UNCSA School of Design & Production, which allowed her to hone her creative skills in the behindthe-scenes production of live theatre and Jill Haley film. Every student works on at least one live production in either theater or film each term.

“I spent three years in a wig and makeup technology program,” Haley said. “I was mentored by two professors, both of whom had excelled in the hair, wig and makeup design industry.”

“One of my main focuses in graduate school was taking historical references like illustrations and paintings and bringing them to life,” said Haley.

“To be able to now utilize this for the entertainment industry has been great.

Usually if you are using a wig, you are trying to replicate a style from the past, so to be able to take that and dissect it and bring it to life is a lot of fun and very rewarding. I find all the intricacies in doing this fascinating.”

Haley graduated from UNCSA in May 2015 with a MFA degree focusing on wig and makeup design. During her time at UNCSA, Haley often traveled to New York City for brief jobs. Upon graduating, she made the city her permanent residence.

The young Southerner has thrived in the city’s dynamic environment where she is able to artistically express herself in her work with the ballet. As supervisor she is in charge of bringing

wig designs to life.

“The cool thing about working with the American Ballet Theatre is -though we are based in NYC -- we get to do a lot of traveling,” said the hair and make-up technician. “We have a season beginning in May with the Metropolitan Opera House. It will consist of eight weeks in NYC and the rest of the year we will be traveling across the United States and throughout the world. We’ll be in Paris in September and in Oman in 2017.

“It’s really great being able to travel the country and world with such an incredible group of people,” she continued. “I enjoy what I do because I believe so much in the arts and it is something I am passionate about. I believe performing arts are important to society and play a major role in the betterment of an individual. Art forces us to take a look at what’s around us, but more importantly, what’s inside of us. It knows no language. It breaks cultural boundaries. It teaches, heals and forces growth.”

In addition to her job with the America Ballet, Haley is the hair supervisor for the Off Broadway show, “Trip of Love,” a `60s journey through song and dance.

The show uses about 60 wigs during its two-hour duration with some cast members changing up to nine times during the show. All the wigs are styled in the iconic `60s and `70s hairstyles.

She also works as a freelance artist for the wig shop that builds wigs for “Saturday Night Live” and many other shows, films and stage productions. Haley worked directly with the SNL hair designer as project manager building wigs and facial hair for the “Saturday Night Live” actors.

The busy artisan tries to make it back home to Mississippi when she can. In April, she has been asked to be the keynote speaker at a Mississippi State University fashion and merchandising program’s Senior Showcase.

She is the daughter of Jeff and Jan Lancaster Haley of Kossuth.

She has two brothers -- Jake, a senior at MSU majoring in mechanical engineering, and Josh, an eighth-grader and band member at Kossuth Middle School.

The American Ballet Theatre has been recognized as a living national treasure since its founding in 1940. Haley is doing her part in helping to bring the art of dance theater to the great stages of the world.

“I’m really lucky. I’ve made so many friends the last eight years of my life,” she said. “New York City is the mecca of the art world and this is where I belong. Many of my closest friends live here. I also constantly meet new people and make new connections with people who inspire me and teach me something new about myself and about life. It has been an incredible experience.”

Spring is upon us, and if there were ever a time to get your family involved in the outdoors, this is it.

With days growing considerably longer and campgrounds in full swing, it is not uncommon to see vehicles, one after another, headed out to cash in on the fresh spring air. Each year when all of this activity begins, I have to ask, are you and your family getting out and enjoying this amazing time of year or are you left wondering what is everyone doing?

Answering that question shouldn’t be challenging and hopefully somewhere along the way you will Josh Webb see just how much fun

the outdoors can be for the entire family during the months of spring.

Fishing is by far one of the most family friendly activities the outdoors has to offer. Fishing is easy, inexpensive fun that can quickly create a lasting bond between parents and kids for many years to come.

The rising water temps during this time of year forces many fish such as bream and crappie into shallow water to spawn. This annual transition makes it easy to find fish and keep a kid involved throughout the day.

Believe me when I tell you that there are very few things more exciting to a kid than seeing their cork get pulled under the surface of the water and fight fish after fish. It may not seem like a big deal at first, but being there to cheer a kid on as they literally experience the outdoors at their fingertips is one of the most rewarding feelings anyone can find.

As an avid hunter I could never speak of spring without mentioning turkey hunting.

The soul shattering gobbles of a Mississippi long beard sends chills down the spine of every hunter each time they hear it. There are few things better than having the silence of a spring morning interrupted by a thunderous gobble and for those who have experienced know all too well how magical that moment is.

There is a special beauty to every aspect of turkey hunting that captivates a man and makes him long for more. Turkey hunting is also one of the most powerful ways to get a kid or spouse involved in the outdoors. Whether it is intentional or not, hunting turkeys will take you places that always seem to be the path less traveled.

Walking over ridges and crossing creeks may seem crazy to hunt a bird, but it is all part of the adventure of hunting turkeys and it is adventures like these that keep new and experienced hunters coming back for more.

Turkey hunting also allows you to teach a new hunter the importance of patience and hard work. It gives them a chance to see these lessons play out in real time and one day be able to relate it to their life.

Now, having said that, I will be the first to admit that turkey hunting can definitely drive a grown man crazy, but at the same time it can solidify a new hunter’s interest in the outdoors for an entire lifetime.

We are blessed as Mississippians to live in a state that is literally overflowing with opportunities to enjoy some time in the outdoors with family and friends. Whether it be hunting, fishing, camping or kayaking, the possibilities are truly endless. When you prepare to head out for a weekend of fun in the outdoors this spring the most important thing I can say is make sure there is plenty of action.

Make each moment an adventure, and if the action slows, find a way to keep the newcomers involved. Turn slow days hunting into a day of identifying animal tracks and trees. If the fish aren’t biting, you can take that time to go for a hike around the pond or grab a kayak and paddle downstream.

I also urge to never leave home without a camera. Capturing the moments you spend with your family in the outdoors is a great way to look back on the memories made during that special time. It can also be fun to let the kids have the camera for the day and see what the outdoors looks like from their perspective.

Spring is the perfect time to explore the outdoors and it is up to us to take advantage of each opportunity we have to get out and spend time together.

Get a soil test and have a plan Gardening is a pastime many people in the Alcorn County enjoy.

Daylight hours are gradually getting longer during this time of year and this affords individuals more time in the evening to get out and make preparations for this year’s garden.

With the spring growing season just around the corner, I wanted to touch on some tips that would hopefully help ensure a successful growing season.

First and foremost, if Patrick you haven’t already done Poindexter it, you need to get a soil Ag Lines sample of where you have your garden planted. I realize I mention this in just about all of my articles, but it is a very important issue.

One of the most common garden problems is a pH level that is too low.

This can be remedied with pelletized or agricultural lime, but knowing how much to put out will require a soil sample. Soil samples are $6 each but it is still one of the cheapest management tools available to help in plant growth, especially with the cost of fertilizer this year. Adjustments made based on your soil report can have a tremendous impact on how well your garden grows.

Above all, if you are not sure as to how much fertilizer you will need in a particular area, the best way to find out is to soil test. You can bring these samples along with a check or money order to the Alcorn County Extension Service and we will mail them to the lab for you. Usually results will be returned to you in 7 to 10 days.

This is the cheapest management tool you as a homeowner can utilize in order to insure the proper growing conditions for your garden.

season it is important to have a plan. By that, I mean you need to have an idea of where your garden will be located and how it will be sectioned off. I like to draw my garden out on a sheet of notebook paper. Be sure to date it and you will have a record of where you planted different crops in your garden.

This is very helpful when you want to rotate your plants from year to year.

Spring is just around the corner and typically we will experience some rainy weather. It is important to remember that periods of rainy weather followed by warm temperatures can lead to an increase in certain types of fungal infections as well as diseases associated with tomatoes in the garden. There are several ways to decrease the occurrence of these issues. Incidence of diseases such as early blight, Septoria leaf spot, and buckeye fruit rot, all of which are more severe following rainy weather, can be reduced with the following tomato tips: The first involves the use of plant stakes or support cages. Gardeners need to make sure the leaves of the plant don’t come in contact with the soil within the first few weeks of setting out transplants as the first line of defense for tomato leaf diseases and fruit rots. This control technique is effective since the fungi which cause these diseases live in the soil.

Tomato foliage and fruit in contact with the soil surface quickly become disease targets when rain splashes soil particles containing blight and fruit rot fungi onto lower parts of the plant.

So, if you stake, trellis, or cage your plants, this will cut down on disease development in the lower part of the plants. In turn, disease movement up the plant will be slowed.

Along with staking of tomato plants, it’s a good idea to use mulch to further reduce the amount of soil splash onto

fruit. Mulching is a good idea not only for tomato production but for other vegetable crops as well. Mulching will help with pod rot (anthracnose) of lima beans, belly rot of cucumbers and cantaloupes, and fruit rot of bell peppers. Early-season mulching with plastic, newspaper, pine straw, wheat straw and similar materials will mean extra work, but the technique works and will allow you to reduce losses from wet weather diseases.

Staking and mulching will help, but it’s important to realize that other practices such as a good fungicide application program will also need to be carried out to further cut down on vegetable disease losses. There are several fungicides that are on the market that can be used in your garden. Be mindful of withdrawal times and always follow the label directions.

If you are not sure if a particular fungicide or insecticide can be used on the vegetable in question, then don’t use it.

One last thing to remember is that if you are starting your plants off early this year and you get them in the ground early as well, be prepared to cover them if we encounter a cold snap. Most of the time this occurs sometime in April.

Being unprepared could cost you a crop so make plans to cover those plants if necessary.

GRILLED TRI TIP WITH BLACK OLIVE AIOLI 1 tri tip steak, 2 ½ pounds 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves, chopped 1 tablespoon freshly cracked black pepper ¼ cup finely chopped pitted oil-cured black olives 1 cup aioli (see below) 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt Cayenne pepper Place the steak in a small, nonreactive baking dish.

Combine the olive oil, rosemary and black pepper in a small bowl and stir well. Rub the mixture evenly over the tri tip.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours.

Remove the tri tip from the refrigerator 1 ½ hours before cooking.

Prepare and light a charcoal grill for direct cooking.

Add the olives to the aioli and season with cayenne.

When the grill is at its hottest (when the coals are red and glowing and it’s too hot to hold your hand over the grill for more than a couple of seconds), remove the tri tip from the PA G E 3 0

marinade, wipe off any excess marinade, and season on both sides with sea salt. Place the steak on the cooking grate directly over the coals, cover the grill, and cook, turning once, for about 20 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 130 F for medium rare. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes.

Cut the tri tip into thin slices across the grain and arrange on a platter. Serve with aioli.

AIOLI 1 small clove garlic ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 egg yolks 1 cup olive oil To make by hand, chop the garlic and salt together on a cutting board until a paste forms. Transfer to a deep mixing bowl and wrap a damp towel around the base of the bowl to keep it from sliding around the counter as you work. Whisk in the mustard, lemon juice and egg yolks.

While whisking continuously and vigorously, add the olive oil in a slow, thin, steady stream until all of it has been incorporated and the mixture is thick and completely emulsified.

To make the aioli in a food processor, place the garlic and salt in the work bowl and process to chop as finely as possible. Add the mustard and lemon juice and pulse to combine. Add the egg yolks and, with the motor running,

1 8-ounce container Cool Whip (thawed) 4 cups chopped strawberries Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.

Place the cocoa mix and 1 tablespoon chocolate chips in a glass. Add ¼ cup very hot water, and stir until mostly dissolved. Add ¼ cup cold water.

In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth.

Pour batter into the baking pan, and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean, 26 to 28 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes in the pan and 30 minutes out of the pan on a cooling rack.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir cream cheese until smooth. In another medium bowl, combine pudding mix with Splenda.

Add vanilla extract and ¼ cup cold water, and vigorously stir until mostly smooth and slightly thickened. Add cream cheese and 1 cup Cool Whip, and stir until uniform. Cover and refrigerate.

Cut cake into 1-inch cubes.

In a large glass bowl or trifle dish, evenly layer half of the cubed cake. Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries.

Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries.

To assemble, line up 12 fried tomato slices. Season with salt and pepper, then top each with 1 cheese slice, a mound of bacon shrapnel and 2 arugala leaves. Cover with a second fried tomato slice. Secure with a toothpick. Let cool for a minute before serving. (Tomatoes have a surprising ability to hold the heat.) Yields 12 bites

INSIDE-OUT BLTS 8 strips premium bacon, sliced crosswise into 1⁄8 -inch strips 8 firm Roma tomatoes or green (unripe) tomatoes, cut into ¼-inch-thick slices 1 cup flour 3 eggs, beaten 2 cups bread crumbs or panko 3 or more tablespoons olive oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 4-ounce log goat cheese, approximately 1½ inches in diameter, sliced 1⁄8 -inch-thick 24 arugala leaves, lower stems discarded Cook bacon over medium heat until crispy. Drain on a paper towel.

Select the 24 most uniform tomato slices and save the rest for tomorrow’s lunch. Dredge slices in flour, then in eggs, then pat down in bread crumbs.

Reserve on plates, but do not stack.

In a sauté pan over mediumhigh heat, add 3 tablespoons oil. When oil is hot, add as many breaded tomato slices as the pan can accommodate without them touching. Fry for approximately 2 minutes per side, or until browned and crispy. Remove from pan and drain on paper towels.

To use frozen casserole: Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Cover and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Uncover; bake 5 to 10 minutes longer, or until heated through and cheese is melted. Yield: 2 casseroles (5 to 6 enchiladas each)

CHEDDAR BEEF ENCHILADAS 1 pound ground beef 1 envelope taco seasoning 1 cup water 2 cups cooked rice 1 can (16 ounces) refried beans 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided 10 to 12 flour tortillas (8 inches), warmed 1 jar (16 ounces) salsa 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer, pink; drain. Stir in taco seasoning and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in rice. Cook and stir until liquid is evaporated.

1 small sweet onion, minced 1 garlic clove, minced ½ teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon honey, preferably sourwood honey ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips (chiffonade is the formal name for this cut), plus more for garnish Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper To marinate the shrimp, combine the olive oil, red wine vinegar and garlic in a large bowl. Stir to combine.

Add the shrimp and allow to sit, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.

Prepare a medium fire in a charcoal or gas grill. Soak the skewers in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent them from burning.

To make the tomato sauce, bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Place one or two tomatoes at a time into the boiling water. Watch them and, as you see the skin split, remove with a slotted spoon and place in a bowl of cool water. At this point, it will be very easy to slip off the skins.

Cut the peeled tomatoes into a small dice. Put the cut tomatoes into a large bowl.

Add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey. Stir gently to combine.

Skewer the shrimp, 3 per skewer. Grill the skewered shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until they are pink.

Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and a couple grinds of fresh pepper.

Just before serving, add the basil leaves to the tomato sauce. Taste and add more salt if necessary.

Ladle the tomato sauce onto a serving platter and arrange the skewers on top of the sauce.

Garnish with more basil leaves and enjoy! Serves 6 PA G E 3 1

How to raise eco-conscious children Protecting the planet is a global responsibility that requires the cooperation of every man, woman and child. Many eco-conscious adults likely adapted their lifestyles over the last several decades, when the movement to live in a more eco-friendly way took off as more and more people recognized the importance of protecting the environment. Parents who want to instill that lesson in their children at an early age can do so in various ways. n Turn time outdoors with your kids into teaching opportunities. The great outdoors provides a great opportunity to teach kids about the environment and how to protect it. If you like to garden, come planting season explain to your children that planting native plants benefits the environment because such plants have already adapted to the local climate, meaning they won’t need as much water to thrive as non-native plants. If you enjoy camping as a family, explain the importance of leaving nothing behind at your campsite.

Parents can even volunteer their families for weekend park and beach cleanups,

using these outings as opportunities to teach kids about the dangers of littering. n Make recycling a priority at home. One of the easiest ways to get even young kids actively involved in protecting the planet is to make recycling a priority at home.

Many communities already mandate that residents recycle, so explain to kids why recycling is the law. If your community does not have laws regarding recycling, recycle at home anyway, dropping your bottles, cans and other recycled items off at the local recycling center. Such centers may pay for recycled bottles and cans, and parents can incentivize recycling by giving kids any money the family earns through its recycling efforts. n Use a water filter at home. Water filters also provide a simple way to teach kids about the value of protecting the planet.

According to The Water Project, a nonprofit organization that provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, bottles used to package water take more than 1,000 years to biodegrade.

Parents can explain to kids that opting for

water filters at home can drastically reduce human consumption of water bottles that are destined to end up in landfills, where they will remain for centuries. When traveling, fill up reusable bottles and travel mugs with water rather than buying bottled water during pit stops, explaining to kids how bringing your own water is helping the planet. n Park the car and ride bikes more often.

Another fun way to teach kids to be more eco-friendly is to stop driving everywhere and ride bikes when possible. Short car trips burn substantial amounts of fuel and put a lot of wear and tear on a vehicle over time, making the vehicle operate less efficiently. Rather than taking the car to run weekend errands, hop on your bike and take the kids along on theirs. Explain to them how a fun activity like cycling is also very eco-friendly because it reduces fuel consumption and does not contribute to air pollution.

Parents who want to instill a love and respect for the environment in their kids can do so in various ways.

Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations.

Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers. n Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children.

Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like. n Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one.

Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children. n Inquire about camp schedules.

While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as after-school programs.

Brie Gowen wears many hats Registered nurse, writer, mother, veteran and devout Christian

By Carol Humphreys for Crossroads Magazine An experience in an intensive care unit where a loved one is in medical crisis can be emotionally painful. There is the overwhelming anxiety of seeing a seriously ill patient hooked up to cold, beeping machines monitoring vital statistics.

Sometimes, a machine is the only thing keeping them breathing.

Meanwhile, anxious questions go unanswered by seemingly detached doctors and nurses as they go about their daily routines.

The message critical care nurse Brie Gowen wants to convey is while families of loved ones don’t always see the inner turmoil these medical professionals carry inside, it is there. What patients and loved ones don’t always see is the protective shell surrounding their ICU caregivers keeping emotions and compassion at bay so they can focus on the serious issues affecting their patients.

In her blog, “Savor the Essence of Life,” Gowen wrote about this very issue.

Her message resonated throughout the medical community. It was also published in the “Huffington Post,” a nationally known news blog where Gowen is a featured blogger.

Besides being a registered nurse, Gowen, 38, is also a mother, veteran and devout Christian, subjects she often writes about in her blog. She is author of two books, “The New Order,” a Christian fictional thriller, and “The Journey: A Voyage through the Jaws of Rejection,” a Christian memoir.

In her memoir, the nurse tells of her journey back to God. She relates an unhappy childhood that though it included love, also left memories of being rejected. She describes how her biological father became an absentee father shortly after her birth, leaving her mother, Marty

Gowen was born in San Diego, Calif. where both her parents were enlisted in the U.S. Navy as hospital corpsmen.

She moved with her mother to Rienzi when she was 8 years old. It was there her mother met and married Gowan’s adoptive father, Michael Graves.

Gowen attended Rienzi Elementary School and middle school in Biggersville.

She graduated from Kossuth High School in 1995. She describes herself as somewhat of an “outcast” during her school years.

“I always seemed to be a square peg,” she commented. “I was the new kid with the weird accent. I suffered from epilepsy that was difficult to control at first, so I was the sick kid. I matured late, so I was the kid still playing Barbies while other girls talked about boys. I was the quiet, contemplative one with few friends. www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

Those I did have were like gold. I suffered bullying, pretty severely, and changed schools to escape the cruelty.”

“As a kid/teenager it’s hard to be different,” she continued. “But as I got older, and especially as my relationship with the Lord grew, I realized that God made me different for a reason. He had a special square hole just for me.”

“As a child I was introduced to Jesus as my Savior, but it wasn’t until I was 19 I understood He could be my companion,” she said. “While attending Northeast Mississippi Community College, a college friend invited me to visit her church. It was through my friendship with her I discovered how God truly cared for me and it changed my life.”

It was during this time, the young woman met her future husband, Benjamin Gowen. With a newborn realization of Christianity, however, the NEMCC graduate decided to pursue mission work and left to go overseas as a missionary. It wasn’t until 10 years

later the couple reunited at the same church where they had first met. After attending a discipleship training school in Barbados, and spending six months doing mission work in Guyana, South America, Gowen decided to move back home.

“After returning to the U.S., and experiencing quite the reverse culture shock, I enrolled at the University of Alabama to continue my nursing education,” she said. “It was fine, but I was having trouble making ends meet.

I was working full time as a waitress, in school full time and struggling. I wasn’t even sure if nursing was for me or not.

So, I decided to join the military and let them pay for school.” While in the Navy, the nursing student followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a hospital corpsman in 2000. She was stationed at the naval hospital at Bethesda, MD. During this time she was deployed to the Baltic visiting Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. She also spent time in London, England.

After receiving her Associate of Science in Nursing degree from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y. in 2004, Gowen began her career in critical care.

“I’ve tried my hand at Long Term Care, Hospice Nursing, and Case Management, but have always gravitated back to ICU,” said the registered nurse.

Gowen and her husband, Ben, have now been married for 6 years. When her oldest daughter was six months old, she realized she loved mothering as much as nursing.

For the past four years, she has been working a part-time position every Saturday and Sunday in the surgical intensive care unit at MRHC. During her time off, she homeschools her children and writes an online blog.

She is the mother of four – Chloe, 5; Bailey, 3, 3-month-old Isabella; and Marlie, 13, her husband’s daughter from a previous marriage. Ben runs the couple’s business, Cornerslice Pizzeria, in downtown Corinth.

The Gowen family have some fun announcing the future arrival of Isabella, who is now three months old. With Ben and Brie Gowen are their daughters, Marlie, Bailey and Chloe.

The writer gets her inspiration for her blog through her observations of daily life.

“I realized when my daughter was two years old, how quickly she was growing up. I wanted to hold onto the lessons God was teaching me through motherhood.

I wanted to cherish every moment and to savor life as the gift it was. What better way to do that than write it down,” Gowen said.

The RN said it was her mother who inspired her to go into the nursing field.

“Initially, I was in veterinary medicine but decided I wanted my patients to be able to tell me what was wrong,” she said, laughing.

“Looking back now, I realize I went into nursing because of my mom,” she continued. “She had always been a hero to me. Watching her as a registered nurse, I saw how smart and caring she was.”

She admits nursing is “hard, hard, hard.”

“A lot of times it’s not very rewarding because of the inherent difficulties,” said the medical professional.

“But when you can find the blessing of serving others in the midst of so much frustration, it proves you have the calling for the field.”

Many of the responses to her blog are from other nurses who comment on how her stories hit home.

“When you can love something so much -- that is so easy to hate -- you have a heart for nursing,” she said.

Having faith in your

marriage

This morning my husband came to my bedside to deposit a goodbye kiss on my lips.

I looked at him through sleep-deprived, gritty eyes and mumbled “I love you.” Then I asked quickly about some errand I had given him to do the day before.

Within minutes, he was gone. The bedroom was again quiet, the children still asleep. He left the house before they rose, and would drag back in just prior to their bedtime. I watched through weary eyes the empty doorway in which he had just stood, and I stared at the vacant place as if I could wish him back.

I realized then I missed him. Yes, he had just left, but I already missed him. In fact, I had missed him while he was still there.

The past week had been a whirlwind of breast feeding, dirty diapers, and periods of wakefulness interspersed with sleep. And the few weeks prior to our new daughter’s arrival had been no respite. Moving, unpacking, sheer exhaustion. The stress of running a small business, for my husband, then running a household in his sparse spare time.

As it stood, we were like co-workers struggling to keep a listing ship afloat, and in between quick hugs and perfunctory kisses, barely a moment to even hold hands had surfaced in the storm in which we were bobbing. It took almost all our energies to keep our heads afloat, and as if I couldn’t tell this by my own tired body, I could see it in the dark circles under my spouse’s eyes.

We were worn out, worn thin, and worse for the wear. Any time we had previously made for one another in our already busy schedules was a distant memory in the current situation to which we flowed. Yes, we had asked for our busyness, and it was indeed a blessing, but that didn’t change the fact that I terribly missed snuggling on the sofa with this man who was my very best friend.

I missed “us” time.

Marriage isn’t always easy, and it definitely CROSSROADS MAGAZINE

isn’t always exciting. Sometimes it’s hard work.

Often times, in fact. Not every single moment of matrimony is filled with marathon sessions of making love until the sun comes up. Instead, it’s a struggle to just find a moment to speak to one another without little voices interrupting.

It’s really important to find time alone together. This we both know. And while it’s on the agenda to carve that niche out very soon, in the real world of responsibilities, sometimes time apart is hard to find.

And that is where faith comes in.

That is where the belief that your marriage is worth working for is important. It’s the part where you trudge past the busy schedules and sift through the tight time frames to grab hold of that deep-seated knowledge that he was meant for you, and you were meant for him.

And in the acknowledgement of the gift of your spouse you still enjoy your marriage, even if the circumstances aren’t favorable. And certainly if they’re not cultivating your relationship.

You cultivate it anyway.

You build on the faith you have in your union, and you use it like a buoy to keep your head above water in the tumultuous waves life sends your way.

So when time apart isn’t possible, you still cling to the love that’s there. You cherish the one beside you, even if they happen to not be beside you at the time.

Having faith in your marriage and in your spouse will keep your foundation strong even when circumstances huff and puff, and threaten to blow your house down. You actually laugh at that big bad wolf, knowing nothing can disrupt the brick and mortar you have laid.

This morning I eventually stopped staring at the empty doorway, and instead sent my husband a love note via my phone.

After all, faith in your marriage goes a long way, but the rest of the ground is covered well by remembering to tell them just how much you care. www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

How families can get up and go

Families often look for fun things to do together, and few things are more fun than physical activity. Choosing activities that combine fun with physical activity is a great way to bond as a family and get healthy at the same time. According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to fight the problem of childhood obesity, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Parents know it can sometimes be hard to get kids to disconnect from their devices long enough to get out and play. But Let’s Move! notes that kids who are supported by their families or surrounded by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves.

Families looking to get fit and grow closer can consider the following approaches to live healthier, more active lifestyles. n Give gifts that encourage activity. Both youngsters and adults are enamored with the latest gadgets, but tablets and video game consoles won’t do much to make families more physically active. In lieu of toys that promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity.

Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together. n Restrict TV time. Establish house rules regarding how many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night. Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity. n Walk or ride bikes to run errands.

When running errands in town, take the kids along and walks or ride bicycles rather than drive. This is a great time for families to catch up, and walking or riding a bicycle is great exercise for adults and kids alike. n Schedule physical activities for the weekends. Message of hope Ivy Green shares the Helen Keller story

By Brant Sappington for Crossroads Magazine At a simple black water pump outside a white clapboard home in Tuscumbia, Ala., Helen Keller’s dark world suddenly came to vibrant life.

Today that home, known as Ivy Green, is one of the region’s must-see attractions for families, bringing to life the story of the young deaf and blind girl whose astounding determination and intelligence would change the world for those born with disabilities.

Helen Keller’s story begins with her birth in Tuscumbia on June 27, 1880, to Capt. Arthur H. and Kate Adams Keller.

She was a healthy infant, but at 19 months old she contracted an illness that robbed her of her sight and hearing. For six years her parents would struggle to connect with her, until teacher Anne Sullivan came into their lives with a determination

to bring her pupil out of the darkness.

At that plain little water pump Sullivan ran cool water over Keller’s hands, repeating the sign for water until suddenly she made the connection between the water and the sign representing the word.

That first connection sparked a passion for learning with Keller soon knowing more than 625 words.

She would go on to learn Braille and attend school, graduating with honors from Radcliffe College. She channeled her own struggles into a passion for improving the lives of others, speaking and working throughout the world to encourage those afflicted with disabilities and improve the lives of women, workers and the disabled.

She also became an acclaimed writer.

Today, Ivy Green sits as the centerpiece of Keller’s remarkable story and is a mustsee stop for visitors to the region. The home was built in 1820 in the Virginia cottage style with four rooms on the first

floor and three rooms on the second. The home and the surrounding grounds have been painstakingly maintained in their original condition including the house itself, the surrounding buildings and the gardens with their peaceful path winding through the property.

Much of the furniture in the home is original to the Keller family. Each room is also filled with personal items belonging to Helen telling the story of her worldwide travels and life’s work. The property includes a museum, gift shop and more, all dedicated to sharing Keller’s message of hope.

Located at 300 North Commons Street West in Tuscumbia, the home is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and is closed on major holidays. Guided tours are available throughout the day. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students ages 5-18, $5 for senior citizens and AAA members and $5 for active or retired military personnel. ‘The Miracle Worker’

When teacher Anne Sullivan came to Tuscumbia, Ala., in 1887 to work with an out of control deaf and blind 6-yearold child, she never knew how her life and the life of that child were about to change.

As Sullivan connected with the wild and confused young Helen Keller, she began to reach her and finally helped her connect sign language with the things in her own world.

Sullivan’s breakthrough earned her the nickname “The Miracle Worker” and it was through her nurturing that Keller would grow to become one of the world’s greatest advocates for the disabled and downtrodden.

The story of Keller’s journey and her relationship with her dedicated teacher is retold in William Gibson’s classic play “The Miracle Worker.” www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

From June through mid-July audiences can experience the play on the grounds of Keller’s birthplace, the home known as Ivy Green, in Tuscumbia, Ala. The show, produced by the non-profit Helen Keller Foundation, is a beloved tradition in the region and a can’tmiss attraction for visitors. The play features authentic period costumes and professional actors retelling the Kellers story in dramatic fashion.

Gibson’s play won numerous Tony Awards while on Broadway and has been adapted multiple times for television

and the big screen, but there is nowhere it comes to life in more dramatic fashion than on the very grounds of the home where the events occurred.

This year’s productions are set for June 3 through July 9. The gates of the home open at 6:30 p.m. for free tours with paid admission to the show. Reserved seating is $15, general admission is $10 and group rates are available.

Find different ways to spend time as a family As members of modern families are increasingly pulled in different directions, it can be challenging for them to enjoy time together as families.

According to a report titled “Spending Time with His Kids: Effects of Family Structure on Fathers’ and Children’s Lives” in the Journal of Marriage and the Family, kids’ academic performance can benefit from having mothers who frequently communicate with them and fathers who spend time doing activities with their kids.

Time spent together also can nourish a stronger emotional bond between parents and children, which may make children less likely to exhibit behavioral problems.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University states that teens who frequently have dinner with their families are less likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or try illegal substances.

Kids are not the only ones who benefit from more family time. Parents who

regularly interact with their children may learn to appreciate their kids even more. They can see the subtle changes in personality and abilities as kids age, and be better equipped to intervene if they suspect their children are veering off the right path.

Spending time with children can be fun, as well as mentally and physically stimulating.

Parents who want to increase family time can do so in various ways. n Establish at least one day each week that the family catches up with one another. It may be a Friday evening or a Sunday afternoon. Choosing a day rather than winging it guarantees weekly time together. n Turn chores into opportunities to involve the kids. It may be faster to fold the laundry or rake the leaves by yourself.

However, showing kids they are a part of a functioning household in which everyone does their part is an important lesson for youngsters to learn. Let kids know that once chores are finished the family can do

something fun together. n Take a break from television or screen time on computers and mobile devices.

The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages media use by children younger than two and recommends limiting older children’s screen time to no more than one or two hours a day. Too much screen time by children, and even adults, can result in irregular sleeping habits, behavioral problems, obesity, and less time for play or family interaction. n Eat at least one family meal together per day and use the opportunity to talk about what is going on in one another’s lives. n Take a vacation together as a family and make sure you leave phones and tablets behind at the hotel so you can fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. It’s amazing what you might learn about one another when you are engaged in the same activity and are away from the distractions you routinely encounter back at home.
