Fillmore project paving to begin BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The construction contractor for the Fillmore Street project plans to begin laying asphalt this week. Felix Rutledge of Rutledge

Contractors of Tupelo said he hopes to have the concrete work complete by Wednesday with paving to follow on Thursday and Friday, weather permitting. The permanent striping will follow 10 days after paving.

He is not anticipating significant road closings, but traffic may have to be redirected at times, and some limited blocking of streets may be needed. Rutledge said the crew will probably start paving at the

south end of the project and move north to Main Street. The contractor has asked residents not to park on the street in the construction zone. The Fillmore Street project has a 60-day contract for the

Of the many books penned about the Civil War, perhaps few are able to bring romance to the conflict. Lee Wilson’s new novel about Shiloh, “Once a Southern Soldier,” takes that approach. A practicing dentist in Memphis for 30 years, Wilson will visit Corinth for April 21 activities including the Sons of Confederate Veterans Heritage Weekend on the grounds of the depot and the Antiques Crossroads Market at the nearby CARE Garden. Wilson’s book is available now at the Crossroads Museum. He will be on hand during the event to discuss his novel and his interest in the war. “This will be the local launch for his novel about a soldier at Shiloh,” said Brandy Steen, museum director. “We’re excited to be the exclusive seller of the book in Corinth.” The debut novel tells the story of a young farmer from the Mississippi town of Duck Hill. Newly married to his childhood sweetheart, he is thrust into the war at Shiloh. The story focuses on the western theater while portraying how a common soldier felt and suffered while those left behind lived in fear and faced hardships. Wilson is a firearms instructor for the State of Tennessee and a Civil War enthusiast with particular interest in the Western theater. He has followed his great-grandfather’s steps on the battlefields. Wilson is tentatively scheduled to be at the event at 10 a.m. The SCV heritage activities are set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum grounds. The event will include relic and flag displays, Civil War period sutlers, living history demonstrations and live music. The antiques market is also set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CARE Garden. The event offers individuals and dealers an opportunity to sell antique and vintage items. There is no gate fee, and the public is invited to browse and shop. Interested sellers need to contact the tourism office at 287-8300.

A nationally known author will be the featured speaker at the upcoming monthly meeting of Corinth’s Col. W.P. Rogers Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Donald Kennedy of the Kennedy Twins, a two-brother writing duo best known for their book “The South Was Right!” will speak during the SCV’s meeting at Martha’s Menu D. Kennedy in downtown Corinth. “We are honored. Kennedy is one of the most publicized speakers we’ve ever had,” said Camp Commander Larry Mangus. “He’s really an advocate for state’s rights, and we’re lucky to get him.” Donald and brother Ronald Kennedy make up the Kennedy Twins. Their most successful book, “The South Was Right!” has sold over 120,000 copies. In observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Corinth Area Visitors & Convention Bureau will soon offer free guided tours of the city’s Civil War-related sites. “Because of popular demand and the importance of April 2012 for the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration, we decided to offer the compli-

mentary tours once again,” said Tourism Director Kristy White. “The tours give people such a wonderful insight about Corinth and its Civil War heritage.” The tours will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday with the Civil War Walking Tour. Participants will meet at the site of Battery Robinett near the Civil War Interpretive Center. The Sunday tour — and all scheduled Sunday tours — will

cover several miles and comfortable shoes are recommended. The first Downtown Walking Tour will begin at the historic railroad crossing at the Corinth Depot on Tuesday, April 17. Shorter than the Sunday tour, it is a relatively moderate walk with stops near historic businesses, homes and the Verandah House. Tour guide Sean Marcum said he is going to put some extra

energy into this last series of Corinth tours. Marcum, 23, is an accomplished young historical tour guide. He conducted his first Corinth tours last April and continued the tours in the Fall. Marcum will depart for another history-related gig in Germany in early May. He is the founder and operator of Shiloh-Corinth Battlefield Please see TOURS | 2

On this day in history 150 years ago Citizens of Corinth begin to pack their belongings and travel south by wagon and train. The day before, they had been ordered by Gen. Beauregard to evacuate the city as he fears an immediate advance by the Union armies at Pittsburg Landing.
