elcome to Corinth! On behalf of all of us who live and work here, I thank you for your interest in our part of the world in Northeast Mississippi! Our area is known for its rich, Southern culture with our extraordinary history rooted in our farm culture, our music, our creativity, and our culinary delights. Poignant events that have shaped the country’s fiber also had a major impact on our area. None more so than the American Civil War. The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center, a part of Shiloh National Military Park, explores the siege, battle and occupation of Corinth through interactive exhibits, videos of the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth, and an educational water feature. As the year 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, all of our community partners in the tour and travel industry are working with the Civil War Interpretive Center to remind you, our community and our visitors to “Find Your Park” and enjoy what is available to you within a short drive. Be sure to make stops at the Crossroads Museum/Corinth Coca-Cola Museum, the Corinth Black History Museum, the Contraband Camp, the Corinth National Cemetery, the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery, Civil War Earthworks, the Lake Hill Motors Museum, and Historic Downtown Corinth. orinth is helping the National Park Service celebrate. As NPS celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and the Crossroads is helping with the candles. Over 12,000 luminaries will put the spotlight on the NPS and the city when Grand Illumination returns on Nov. 5. “It’s an event we want to do and there is nothing like a luminary presentation for people to understand the story of

12,000 soldiers,” said Shiloh National Military Park Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. “Our goal is to make it fresh again.” Grand Illumination – staged in the city from 2008-2012 – is part of the “Find Your Park” being promoted by the NPS to celebrate its 100 years. The event, named a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society, involves the lighting of 12,000 luminaries in memory

of the soldiers from both sides of the conflict who died in Corinth in April of 1862 during the Siege of Corinth and in October during the Battle of Corinth. Luminaries will be placed at the site of Battery Robinett/Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and then form a path into downtown, highlighting antebellum homes, the historic business district, the historic railroad crossing and SoCo District. “This is a good way to represent Corinth and let tourists see what the city is all about,” said Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Christy Burns. Lighting of the luminaries will begin around 4:30 p.m. with 7,000 of them

placed around town and another 5,000 at the Interpretive Center. “If you do something every year, it loses its luster,” said Wilkerson. “We are trying to do a lot of special things this year with our centennial, and this event in November will be the last event we plan to roll out.” Other “Find Your Park” local events scheduled during 2016 at Shiloh National Military Park include: Our Nation’s Shared Culture: Americana Traditions (June 18); The Music Invented in America: New Orleans Jazz (July 2); Happy Birthday to the National Park Service (August 25); and Teaching Our Children: Symphonies and Concert Bands (September 3).

C

orinth is home for a number of reasons. The things which provoke tourists to visit the city on a regular basis are some of the same items that have kept citizens deep rooted in the Crossroads. To many residents the city is “My Corinth.” From Civil War to slugburgers, Corinth has provided all they need to “Live Like a Local.” “My dad graduated from Corinth High School in 1947, so I fondly remember some of his stories about the town,” said downtown resident Stacy Jones. “Stories including both the Ferguson and Dilworth Hot Tamales – the latter of which we ate many times Saturday nights – Johnny Tschudi chewing on his stubby cigar and hawking Daily Corinthians, and the ‘Cat House.’” Jones, who grew up just across the state line in Guys, Tenn., has always felt

CORINTH 2016-17 VISITORS GUIDE 12

Corinth was her home. “I’ve also lived close to Knoxville and in Memphis, but I have always, however, felt as if Corinth were my home,” she said. “When I was growing up and we went to ‘town,’ it was always Corinth. My parents went to Selmer once a month to do banking and pay bills, but we made a weekly trip to Corinth to shop.” Jones, a teacher at McNairy Central High School, has fond memories of traveling by the B.F. Liddon Home, or “Cat House” as it is affectionately known. “I was fortunate to meet the Simmons family, who owned it, and then Margaret Mathis, who owns it now, and see inside that beautiful Richardson Romanesquestyled house,” said Jones. “It is part of the architecture and folklore I love about Corinth.” Living in downtown has several advantages, according to Jones.

“After living here a few short months, we knew this was the place for us.” Taylor Combs | Corinth resident

“You are able to meet a smiling face everywhere you go. Corinth is also a place you can feel safe when you walk down the street and enter your house at night.”

“There may not be as much action here as in larger cities, but for what there is, I feel as though I’m in the middle of it,” she said. “Downtown restaurants are my favorites. I enjoy going to Vicari, close to where I live … the food is excellent – especially the lobster ravioli and the shrimp and crab manicotti.” Jones said several other downtown eating establishments are high on her list. “For a vast spread of general pasta dishes or gourmet pizza, Pizza Grocery cannot be beat, especially the rigatoni and the Margherita pizza,” she said. “Overall, smith is the go-to place for atmosphere. Upstairs is a nice area to sit and chat with others, and smith has delicious appetizers, including a wonderful spinach and artichoke dip, the portion of which is large enough for two people.” Ann Walker moved to Corinth over 40 years ago as a newlywed. “When I moved the town’s slogan was ‘Corinth, What a Place to Live’ and for me and my family, that has proven to be true to form,” said the retiree. “Corinth is the perfect town for those who value excellent school systems and health care.”

Civic and community involvement along with affordable cost of living also set the city apart, according to Walker. “You are able to meet a smiling face everywhere you go,” she said. “Corinth is also a place you can feel safe when you walk down the street and enter your house at night.” Ann and her husband, James, reared two sons in Corinth. “It was never a challenge because there was always some kind of program for them,” she said. “Now grown men, they are giving back to the community that helped to raise them.” Walker has been strongly invested in Corinth for 40 years. She has volunteered for numerous organizations and served on several boards. “So many things have impacted our family in Corinth and continue to do so today,” said Walker. “Corinth, wow, what a place to live.” Taylor Coombs grew up in Corinth after a job brought her parents to the city. “After living here a few short months, we knew this was the place for us,” said Coombs, an IAL data manager/market-

ing with the Corinth School District. “The greatest thing about Corinth is by far the people.” Coombs returned to the city after earning her degree at Ole Miss. She became the Main Street Corinth director in 2013. “That was a dream job for me,” she said. “I learned about the group of people in Corinth who operate the local homegrown businesses and restaurants we all know and love.” Coming back to Corinth opened Coombs’ eyes to the things she had been missing while away. “When you leave Corinth, you realize how lucky we are to have the local restaurants we do,” said Coombs. “What would coming home be like without a Café Mike’s chicken strip pasta salad with no lettuce – wine and cheese dressing, a longed for taste of Mi Toro Cheese dip, a slugburger with cheese and mustard, and a good ole Steak on a Stick from Russell’s.” Coombs has plenty of favorites when it comes to local cuisine.

CORINTH 2016-17 VISITORS GUIDE 14

“There is nothing like a night with friends at smith, a Taylor St. pizza from Corner Slice, a Chicken Pesto sandwich from Pizza Grocery and a steak from Vicari,” she said. “People should also try a chocolate biscuit from Abe’s, a plate of grilled chicken strips from Dinner Bell with homemade honey mustard, a chicken biscuit from Harper Road Cafe, a plate of fried catfish from Taylor’s and breakfast with a Cruise Street view from Martha’s Menu.” The first weekend of May offers locals all kinds of things to do downtown, according to Coombs. “Everyone rallies for a huge opening weekend of summer,” she said. The Coke 10K, Films on Fillmore, Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, Green Market and Crawfish Boil get the summer started in May. “I could talk for days to anyone who will listen about Corinth,” said Coombs. “We all need to continue to be proud of the city we live in because ‘Corinth is America’s hometown.’”

WHAT TO SEE, WHERE TO GO

All trips to Corinth should begin with a visit to the Corinth Area Convention & Visitor’s Bureau tourism office located in the former Railroad Express Agency (REA) office on Fillmore Street next to the railroad tracks and in front of the Crossroads Museum and Historic Corinth Depot. Built in the 1920s, REA was the place for local people to send packages via railroad. It later became the Illinois Central Depot. The Corinth and Alcorn County headquarters for all things tourism related offers local, area, regional and statewide information on attractions, dining and shopping. Several friendly staff members are also on hand to provide helpful travel suggestions. Built with traditional colonial style and

decorated by 1800s antiques, it isn’t your typical rest stop. Complimentary refreshments, restroom facilities, walking trail, covered picnic tables and 24-hour security are provided. It has a RV waste disposal facility and motor coach parking. Travel hosts at the center can answer questions and even offer you a discount on a local hotel stay. Today, one of the National Park Service’s newest visitors centers, interprets the key role of Corinth in the Western Theatre of the American Civil War. The 15,000 square foot facility features interactive exhibits and a multimedia presentation of the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Corinth. The center stands near the site of Battery Robinett, a Federal fortification where some of the bloodiest fighting of the Battle of Corinth took place. An obelisk stands in tribute to Colonel William P. Rogers of the 2nd Texas Infantry, who showed great bravery attempting to climb the walls of the Battery to claim it for the Confederacy. Four unknown Confederate soldiers are also buried at the site. Visitors reach the center by ascending a walkway strewn with bronze replicas reflecting the aftermath of battle. Corinth to be a secure location. Union General Granville Dodge began to enlist these freedmen as teamsters, cooks and laborers. He actively recruited male refugees, armed them and placed them in charge of security at the newly organized camp in Corinth. Dodge’s administrative efforts led to the formation of the 1st Alabama Regiment of African Descent, consisting of approximately 1,000 men. Today a portion of this camp has been set aside to commemorate the events which changed the lives of so many people. Beautiful bronze figures surround the trail through the camp, depicting the lives of these people considered to be “contraband” of war. Veterans of all wars are buried there, many with their wives. CORINTH’S CIVIL WAR EARTHWORKS (BATTERY F, BEAUREGARD LINE AND FORT BATTERY ROBINETT) Davis Street, Hwy 2 The City of Corinth offers visitors a multitude of Civil War related sites but none as impressive as the extant earthworks, which have survived not only military engagements, but the battles of time and development as well. They once encircled the city, protecting the vital railroad junction from advancing armies. Today they can be found in neighborhoods and wooded lots, a tangible reminder of another time. All of the earthworks are well marked and have parking spaces or pull-offs and many offer racks for locking bicycles. A few of the sites are easily accessible though most require a walk of from several hundred yards up to a mile. Well-marked paths lead to the sites, and most have informative way side exhibits describing the individual earthworks.
