Unfortunately, the sea otter was one of the an-imals prized for its pelt. Hunters traveled from Alaska to Southern California to capture them. As a result, the playful sea otters were hunted almost to extinction by the late 1800s' Since then, the government has taken an interest in sea otters and ñas placed a ban on the hunting of these creatures. Although there are still hunters who illegally poach these animals for their fur, the population of sea otters off the coast of California is increasing' iin
