MEDITATION 101!
CANDY CRUSH! With by SMITH owner/designer, Smith Sinrod
With Paige Denim
FOUNDER PAIGE ADAMS GELLER BOOTH: 105, LEVEL 4 How do you stay sane during Coterie? I’ve learned through trial and error to pace myself through body, mind and spirit. How do you pace yourself? I work out in the morning, then I meditate so I can rock ‘n’ roll all day long. Then, I have an early dinner and I try to get to bed at a reasonable time. What are Paige’s favorites? Our rompers! We’re also taking baby steps towards a whole lifestyle collection: silk and viscose blend shirts are a take on our denim shirts. I also love the paint splatter corrosion group and the double-zippered Edgemont styles.

YOUR DAILY DOSE SCENE
How did you fare at Coterie this season? Vendors turned out their finest wares, buyers scoured for the chicest stock around, and The Daily loved covering every moment of it. ☛ The Hills had a reunion on the trade show floor! Well, not quite, but Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port popped by their respective booths, Paper Crown and Whitney Eve, on Tuesday. ☛ New venture alert! Elie Tahari debuted a jean line, Greywire, with denim guru Michal Press at Coterie this year. Expect 20 different denim styles for femmes and hommes. ☛ Overheard! “From all this walking around I’m going to be so skinny by the time Coterie is over!” ☛ See you in February for the next round of Coterie, darlings!
How many years have you been working the Coterie floor? It feels like 20 years, but it’s really only been two years. How do you make it through the day with a lot of energy? Having a bowl of candy helps. So does coffee. Top seller, please. Our shorts sell really well! They were a cult favorite in tie silk, but now we’ve put a new spin on them with Italian jacquard fabric.
BOOTH: 242O, LEVEL 3 How’d you enter the denim biz? I was actually born into it! I’m the third generation of my family to work in the garment industry, and my dad started 7 For All Mankind. Got any fellow denim-making pals? Yes! Adriano Goldschmied is a really good friend of mine and Jerome Dahan [of Citizens of Humanity] used to be my dad’s business partner. Ever broken in your jeans in a bathtub? I tried that trick once. I prefer wearing my jeans in the ocean and rubbing them with sand.

COAT CRAZY!
With Ilan Elfassy, creative director and founder of Soia & Kyo BOOTH: 2243, LEVEL 3
Ilan Elfassy
Why design only outerwear? I’m from Canada. We’ve got quite cold weather! I know the importance of a warm jacket! What was the first jacket you ever created? In 2004, I created a wool coat, named the Paris. My sister moved there that year, so it was a good way to remember her!
What brings you to Coterie? This is my first time here! I collaborated with Cri de Coeur on an all-vegan shoe line. What sets your shoe debut apart? I was so sick of seeing these giant platforms, so I used hidden off-set platforms instead. They’re totally comfortable. How do you pick your footwear each day? I’ll probably wear sparkly boots one of these days. I’m not sure I could make it on the trade show floor all day in high heels! What have you learned about designing shoes from this collab? It’s a very architectural process.
BOOTH: 4442, LEVEL 3 Interesting brand name! Do people ever think you sell something besides clothes? A lot of people have thought we’re a tattoo shop or that we deal with medical supplies. How was your first-ever NYFW show? The collection was clean and well-styled! It was important for us not to come out of the gates too crazy. We want people to understand the clothes, and have room to grow from there. Where’s Skingraft’s HQ? We’re based in Los Angeles, but we produce everything in Bali. We’re hands-on with production. Our designer, Jonny Cota, spends six months of the year at our factory in Bali.

TALON TALK!
With designer Jill Haber BOOTH: 7508, LEVEL 3 Wait, are your nails sporting tiny versions of your handbags?! Yes, this woman did my manicure with the tiniest brush. It took her two hours! Why’d you decide to dabble in Lucite? It’s huge right now. Showing just a hint of Lucite is like lingerie: It leaves more to the imagination! How did you come up with these chic silhouettes? My mom had a kidney transplant not long ago, so I wanted to do something to honor her. So I designed a kidneyshaped bag. She’ll probably get it in the pebbled look.

TIGER OBSESSED! With Kora Rae designer Rachel Turzer BOOTH: 3030, LEVEL 3 What inspired your collection? Tigers! I wanted to create a line where women felt empowered and like they were wearing art. My love for wildcats is as deep as my love for fashion. How do you help out the tigers? I wanted to give back to my muses! We rescued a tiger,
FEELING FRENCH! With O Marché co-founder Bruno Peutat
Kora, from an exhibit in Oklahoma. I’ve been twice to visit the tiger since then. Have you always been a fashion designer? I actually pursued a career in the medical field, but designing clothes is my lifelong aspiration.

BOOTH: 7212, LEVEL 3 How’d you discover such amazing French brands? I’m French! I used to have a store in SoHo, but after 9/11 I closed up shop and opened my showroom with the same brands! How have French-American fashion affairs evolved over the years? When when I entered this market 15 years ago, there were no small French designers in the U.S. And there were no American designers in France, either. Marc Jacobs was well known, but he wasn’t designing for a French house yet.

CATCHING UP WITH… GOTHAM PRIDE!
With For Helen Love Paris co-founder Troy Sanford BOOTH: 6945, LEVEL 3 Where do you produce your line? We’re bringing back the garment district! We’re based there. One of our NYC factories also produces for Elizabeth and James and Helmut Lang. How many years have you worked the Coterie circuit? Three! Last season we picked up a Japanese retailer and since then we’ve had a lot of foreign interest. Troy Sanford Any famous fans of the brand? Vanessa Williams loves our dresses!
Shabbies Amsterdam and Fretons designer Fred de la Bretonière BOOTH: 7621, LEVEL 3 What’s your favorite color? I don’t have a favorite color. But I do love all the basic, natural colors, done in leather. Preferred method of relaxation? I relax best while doing nothing, so it seems. What’s your beauty secret? Positive thinking! Do you prefer city or country life? I enjoy city and also country life! Presently, I live in Amsterdam.

Showing! WHO’S
There are so many brands to navigate in just three days. The Daily to the rescue! AUTUMN CASHMERE Katherine Carpenter, Designer, Booth: 4922, Level 3 Tell us about the brand, please! Autumn Cashmere introduced its very first collection in 1993 and has attained an incredible following in the United States and around the world over the last 20 years. Most luxury knitwear companies offer fairly traditional products, lacking in stylistic elements and seasonality, but the heart of Autumn Cashmere is its a youthful spirit. Describe your cashmere in three words! Luxurious, cozy and delicious. What’s the brand’s motto? Invest Today…Wear Forever. Current favorite music picks, please. AMOK by Atoms for Peace; Apocalypse by Thundercat; Microcastle by Deerhunter; and Lonerism by Tame Impala. If you had to wear one sweater for the rest of your life, which style would it be? I still love any and every variation of a drape front cardigan because it’s a cross between a wrap and a cardigan. I have a favorite that travels with me everywhere; it’s very versatile and can be worn with anything.
Favorite color? Like a lot of New York designers, I live in black. But there are very specific shades of aqua and pink that I love to look at. I just don’t like to wear those shades! Thoughts on people who wear just black? As one of those people that wear a lot of black, I feel a kinship with them. Nothing makes packing for travel and a busy lifestyle easier than having a simple black wardrobe. All the components work together effortlessly. And let’s face it: black is pretty cool, too! What’s your dream vacation? Generally, anywhere where there’s an ocean. I would love to explore the coast of Cornwall sometime soon as well. Beauty item you’ll never give up? Bobbi Brown foundation in Beige #3. It takes away all the redness! What are you lookin forward to this fall? Atoms For Peace at the Barclays Center later this month, and shopping in London in October!
YOSI SAMRA Design and Sales Team, Booth: 5627, Level 3 Favorite part about the trade show circuit? Seeing how excited our accounts get over new styles! It really pays off to hear how much they love the new collection! What do you love most about fall? The weather in New York is incredible, and the fashion and colors lead to tons of inspiration for the Yosi Samra Collection. Does the brand favor a particular color? We’re a fan of neutrals. They are timeless and the most wearable. Our team did love oxblood for fall! Heels or flats? An amazing pair of flats, hands down!
FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
SUZI ROHER Suzi Roher, Designer and Founder, Booth: 3322, 3423, Level 3 How did you get into designing? My mother was in the fashion industry so I was exposed to it from an early age. As a kid, designers such as Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent inspired me to constantly make my own outfits. Describe your brand in one sentence! Sophisticated, quality fashion that pushes the boundary between cutting edge design and every day wearability. How important are belts to your personal wardrobe? I consider belts to be jewelry for the waist, so when I get dressed, choosing a belt is an essential part of my outfit. What’s your favorite Suzi Roher stockist? L’Eclaireur in Paris. Their customers really appreciate my work. Any expansion plans in the works? Yes! For this season we have a stylish leather baseball jacket, T-shirts with washable leather sleeves, sexy silk pants, and more. PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY THE DESIGNERS

PLANET
LAMARQUE Ifigenia Papadimitriou, Director of Design, Booth: 2933, Level 3 Tell us about the name! It comes from the French translation of the word, which is “the branding.” A leather garment is an investment that one carefully thinks about before buying and wearing. Aside from designing, what other creative outlets do you have? I dabble in interior decorating and architectural planning. Which retailers are you aiming to attract this season? It’s important for our brand’s development to be hanging on the selling floors of the best stores. I would love to see further expansion into these “A” doors. Favorite part about the trade show circuit? Hearing the success stories and catching up with people I haven’t seen since the last show. If you had to wear one jacket for the rest of your life, what would it be? A Perfecto leather jacket.
Lauren Grossman, Designer and President, Booth: 9616, Level 1 Do you have a favorite fabric to design with? Pima cotton! It’s the world’s finest cotton, and it feels like silk. Aside from designing, got any other creative outlets? Interior design and floral sculpting. What’s your favorite part about the trade show circuit? The sense of high energy from both the exhibitors and the excited buyers. If you had to wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Planet’s leggings. You can wear them with flats, combat boots, or stilettos. Do you have a preferred method of relaxation? The beach. The sun and the sounds of the ocean give me a sense of tranquility. It’s also a great place to create. What’s the one beauty item you’ll never give up? Eyeliner! It’s one simple line that defines the shape of your eye and gives impact. Something so simple, creating such a statement. I love that. What’s your favorite part about fall? Since the weather cools down, you can wear jackets and finally begin layering a sweater over tees and tanks.
OUP THE DEN LUXURY GR
RONEN CHEN Ronen Chen, Designer, Booth: 7024, Level 3 Tell us about the brand name. Ronen Chen is my name. Chen means beauty in Hebrew. Do you have a favorite sihouette right now? My thing at the moment is oversized T shirts and tunics with geometric cuts. Aside from designing, what are your creative outlets? Photography is my newest love. I photograph everything from my designs, architecture, my daughters, and even food. Do you have a favorite color? Yes, it’s a combination of grey and beige, which I call greige. I like it on everything, from clothes to bowls to furniture. If you had to wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Blue jeans. If you weren’t designing, what would you be doing? I’d be an architect! FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
Denia Guemri, Founder, Booth: 3532, Level 3 Tell us the history of the group! The group was established in 2008 after my departure from a multi-line Italian showroom. I had several years of experience with luxury brands prior to creating The Den Luxury Group. The transition has been great. I have never looked back. Are you a creative type? Yes! Growing up in a big family, I learned to be creative with the bare minimum. If you had to wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, what would it be? An oversize shawl, as they’re so versatile. You can wear them as a top, a dress, or a skirt! Preferred method of relaxation? Nothing beats jogging through Central Park, but whenever there is time I love to hop a the plane and head to an exciting new place. Favorite part about the trade show circuit? I love the renewed energy and enthusiasm we all have. It’s great to see the heritage brands continue to be successful, in addition to seeing new brands make their way in the industry. One beauty item you will never give up? My perfume. I believe a woman should smell good at all times! What does luxury mean to you? Whereas materialistic goods are considered to be luxury to some, others yearn for the essence of time, family, and relaxation. Being able to enjoy the simplest things in life is a luxury to me.

WILD THING
BOOTH: 4000, LEVEL 3
King of the home décor jungle Jonathan Adler has added a fashion accessories line to his perpetually cheeky collection. But this week at Coterie he’s still playing house with a display of signature furnishing and gift items at his Lounge Experience. The designer talked Rolex watches, relaxing in Capri, and animals galore with The Daily. Ready to horse around with Mr. Adler? BY SARA LIEBERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK CLINE Love the new accessories! Why did you decide to add them to your home collection? I’m a restless designer; I’m always looking to do more. The fashion accessories collection lets me bring my design philosophy of irreverent luxury to items that people can carry outside the home. You deserve to be as glamorous as your living room. How important are accessories to a look? We live in an age where anything goes. People get inspiration from everywhere and mix high and low. The same goes for their wardrobes. Accessories allow you to experiment with your look. You can channel Talitha Getty one day, and Lilly Pulitzer the next. What’s your favorite way to accessorize? My favorite accessory is the Rolex my hubby Simon [Doonan] bought me for our anniversary a few years ago. It’s sentimental, it’s rugged, and I wear it everyday. The West Village shop on Greenwich Avenue is the first to be devoted to the new line of accessories. Did you choose that location for a reason? It’s a small space, so it’s perfect to showcase accessories. It’s like the ultimate walk-in closet. The store also features our new gift bar, so you can pick up something for yourself as you shop for everyone on your list. Where else do you plan on expanding? The next accessory and gift shop is a pop up shop at the Mall at Short Hills, and after that will be Santa Monica. Your designs often feature animals. Why? Animals are well-designed by Mother Nature, and I love to take what she made and distill their shapes down to their essential FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M
forms. There’s no real science to picking the animals we have in the collection—I just started with some of my favorites, and we add more all the time. Our pottery studio is like a ceramic Noah’s Ark. We’re partial to the snake, but what’s your favorite? It’s the one snake you wouldn’t mind finding in your yard! I love the horse. It’s one part chinoiserie chic and one part New Jersey horse country. What’s your bestselling creature? The snake and the owl are neck and neck. I think the snake has a bit of subversive sex appeal, and owls are magical creatures. Everyone loves them, but an owl sighting is incredibly rare. They make a real impression. Your items also have fun words or phrases. How do you come up with them? It’s a collaborative effort in the office; I’m fortunate to have a talented design team to work alongside. My favorite suggestions are probably unprintable, though. Our new Vice Canisters are what we call “nice vices”—fibs, white lies, and eyelashes. Still as irreverent as the originals, but not as shocking in case you’re looking for a gift for your dear Aunt Gladys. What’s your favorite color? Orange. Why? It’s the color of happiness. Do you have a preferred method of relaxation? Paddle boarding at my Shelter Island pad. Fun! What’s your favorite memory from this summer? Our annual week in Capri. I’m pretty sure heaven is just like Capri. ALL PRODUCTS COURTESY

Sophisticated bohèmes! Iridescent takes on neutrals in dreamy silhouettes abounded. Sui’s visit to the Tate museum last year inspired a troupe of PreRaphaelite beauties, donning minidresses wrought with gilded embellishment and flippy layers.
