Karl Lagerfeld’s couture confections are always a testament to his vivid imagination and the inimitable work of Chanel’s petites mains. For the house’s Fall/Winter 2017 affair, he reinvented its signatures yet again. Tweed suits were festooned with feathers, while embroidered and embellished tunics worn over slim pants or mid-length pencil skirts created a strong new silhouette. The entire spectacle transpired underneath a replica of the Eiffel Tower, which underscored the message even further—this is French fashion at its absolute finest.

Garden party! At Fendi’s haute fourrure show, the floral theme loomed large, with the Karl Lagerfeld–designed ensembles blossoming and unfurling with abandon. Models wore dresses and capes that resembled virtual cocoons and were festooned with chrysalis, poppies, and ranunculus. Naturally, the palette was saturated and vibrant, with shades of crimson, aubergine, lilac, and pale pink dominating the runway. Hand-painted mink and tiny fur paillettes were among the atelier’s latest innovations.

There’s a reason that opulence lovers rely on this unabashed purveyor of drama. Giambattista Valli’s haute couture is not destined for shrinking violets, and his confident display of major-occasion moments will land his ladies on the world’s most covetable bestdressed lists. Ballerina-inspired tulle gowns, crystal-embroidered sheaths, exquisitely draped silk chiffon—these are the looks you wear if you’re hell-bent on being the most-talked-about woman in the room. Isn’t that what couture is all about?

RODARTE

Fashion in bloom! Held in the gardens of Paris’s Cloître de Port-Royal, the sublime Rodarte show was evidence of designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy at their best. Heavy with references—this season, to Robert Altman’s 1977 film 3 Women—and laden with romance, Rodarte’s ruffled tulle dresses, sequined chiffon frocks, and motocross jackets were all winners. Especially brilliant? The baby’s breath headpieces, masterminded by Los Angeles floral designer Joseph Free.

boys of summer bash

The boys of summer were back on the East End for The Daily’s third-annual poolside shindig, and as always, it was the highlight of the weekend! The get-together was hosted by Wilhelmina CEO Bill Wackermann and Daily publisher Mark Tevis at the couple’s Sag Harbor abode. Naturally, it brought out a slew of male mods, many of whom were clad in spot-on swimwear by VilEbrequin. As DJ MazUrbate played summer hits, guests noshed on a delish spread from Hampton Clambake, including lobster rolls, shrimp, chicken Caesar wraps, and fresh fruit picked from the farm that morning. And to fill our sweet tooth, a spread of sweet confections were on deck, thanks to Kerber’s Farm. Photography by caroline fiss Don Lemon and Friends

DJ Mazurbate

What is your go-to accessory? Diamonds. Jewelry is really important for me because people are always looking at your hands when you’re DJ-ing. I always wear my rings. I have gold name rings, personalized rings with an M on them, and then I also have my Lynn Ban jewelry, which she gifted me. People really see what you are wearing at a daytime party. Song of the summer? “Wild Thoughts,” by DJ Khaled, featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. What kind of vibe were you going for at this party? Super summer vibes, happy, and uplifting. Nothing dark or aggressive, just summer. Like, if I was at a pool party, what would I want to hear? Do you DJ at music festivals? I’ve done fashion parties at Coachella, but I think I bring music festival vibes to fashion parties. That’s my niche! What’s next? It looks like New York Fashion Week is going to be pretty big in September. What’s your dream show to DJ? Louis Vuitton, for sure.

How did the “Breathless” inspo originate? The hairstyle was Sarajane Hoare’s idea, and Mario [Testino] suggested we use a wig. He was inspired by Gigi’s beautiful features and thought the pixie cut would highlight them. Why do Gigi and Mario make such an amazing team? There is a true partnership. Mario is one of the most talented photographers as he is able to collaborate and interpret the brand message with such emotionally resonant visuals. Gigi looks gorgeous—and you want to buy the boots. Because they’ve worked together so often, she lets him do his thing and allows him to always reinvent her in the most amazing pictures. Mario has also told me that he loves Gigi and works so well with her not simply because of her beauty, but because she is a hard worker and truly nice person with an incredible personality. What was the atmosphere like on set? Totally relaxed and fun. Giovanni Morelli, our new creative director, was on set for the first time and totally bonded with the team.

With Milly’s Michelle Smith YACHT ROCK EDITION!

Just like you, I’m a huge fan of the gorgeous, unspoiled Hampton beaches on the ocean side. Now, it’s time to show some serious love to the bay side! YACHT?!? Don’t be intimidated by my use of the word—there are awesome boats to be chartered in all shapes and sizes, for all budgets. Check out Sag Harbor Charters, Peconic Water Sports, and Sailacat, just to name a few.

CHEAT ON YOUR GLUTEN-FREE DIET Sorry, this isn’t the South of France—most local charters will require you to bring your own food and beverages on board. So be sure to hit up Cromer’s in Sag Harbor to stock your boat with the best fried chicken. The best! And don’t forget to pick up some icy cold beers or maybe some Moët Ice Champagne to wash it down. Don’t worry, you’re not piloting the boat! WATER SPORTS? YES! Let’s waterski and wakeboard, then sun ourselves on the deck when we’ve exhausted ourselves. Clothing optional, obvi. Maritime law! CHILLIN’ After some intensely fun water sports, I love cruising by the Elisabeth Morrow National Park and taking in the beautiful, unspoiled views. Refill my glass a bit, lovey? Thanks! AFTERNOON DELIGHT! Later in the day, take your boat around Shelter Island, then dock at Sunset Beach for a while—enjoy a meal at the restaurant, people-watch, play in the sand…you’re feeling really relaxed, right about…now! SUNSET LOVIN’ As you head home, all sun-kissed with salty hair, take in the beautiful sunset over the bay. Pure Hamptons heaven.

THE MODEL DIET: MIRANDA KERR

“If I’m on a modeling job or working from my KORA Organics office, I pack my grilled fish or chicken and salad. Dinner can vary from organic roast chicken and vegetables to baked fish and salad or a BBQ.”

“I start with an organic coldpressed green juice, some fresh-cut fruit, such as papaya, watermelon, and kiwi. Then it’s anything from gluten-free toast with avocado and eggs to oat and banana pancakes with maple “I have syrup for lots of healthy a treat.” snacks ready, such

as cut-up vegetables and homemade hummus, so I’m not tempted to snack on less healthy options. If I have dessert, it’s usually homemade apple pie or cheesecake.”

SUMMER SCHOOL!

How can parents curb summer brain drain? Dr. Kat Cohen, founder and CEO of IvyWise, gives her best tips… ENLIST VACAY HELP! Get kids involved in planning routes, costs, and airline tickets to build financial literacy and organizational skills. DO MEAL PREP! Gardening and cooking tap into math and science skills. ENGAGE! GOING DUTCH

It was love at first sight when we spotted Daphne Groeneveld in 2011, and ever since, we’ve watched the Dutch beauty grow into one of the most in-demand models in the industry. The 22-year-old New York transplant fills us in on how life has changed. BY EDDIE ROCHE

Why did you want to work with [photographer] Carin Backoff? We knew each other from shows—we were backstage together. Her photography is beautiful and strong. I love what she does, so I was really excited about this shoot. What was it like working with her? Very chill! The whole vibe on set was so nice, and she works quickly, so that makes my job easy. What have you been up to this summer? I visited my hometown in Holland, and it was an amazing trip. I love going home and spending time with my friends and family. What were your summers like growing up? My parents used to drive to Italy every summer. We would go camping there for a week or two. I’m in love with the country! I’ve been to so many places in Italy. Where do you stay in the Hamptons? East Hampton and Sag Harbor. My favorite is Sag, because I love spending the day relaxing on the beach and paddleboarding. What are your passions outside of modeling? Nutrition is a passion—reading about health is fascinating. I also love discovering new hot spots and watching documentaries about food. What’s your exercise routine? I work out five times a week. I like running outside but also like to lift weights in the gym. For classes, I’ll go to SLT, Rumble, SoulCycle, or take Pilates. Your first interview with The Daily was published in 2011. A lot has happened to you

since then. What would you tell that girl today if you could? I would tell her to trust herself! The industry can be tough when you’re young, because jobs can get canceled at the last minute. I used to take it personally, but it’s really not personal, and that takes time to understand. You’ve been on countless magazine covers. What do you do with them? My dad collects them, which is super cute. I’ll buy them all and bring them back to Amsterdam. Who are your closest model friends? The Dutchies! Maud [Welzen], Sanne [Vloet], Julia [van Os]. We all used to live in the same building, which was great. We became very close because of that. You’ve often said that Natasha Poly and Lara Stone have been major influences. Why have they been so important to you? They are both iconic-looking and diverse—they can go from super sexy to very edgy. Do you still want to open a hotel someday? I’d love to! I want it to be a small boutique hotel on the beach…but I’m not sure where yet! Where did you and [boyfriend] Justin Hopwood meet? I’ve known him for a while because he models as well. We met through mutual friends. What are your goals now? To keep on working very hard…and take more holidays! ß

simply sara Ever since Victoria’s Secret gave Sara Sampaio her wings, she’s taken off as one of the most in-demand models in the business. While she’s known for her command of the catwalk and has made a serious splash as the official ambassador for Moroccanoil, Sampaio proves that beauty isn’t just skin deep. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER What’s the biggest perk of being Moroccanoil’s ambassador? I love to try skincare and makeup and hair products. Moroccanoil sends me all its new products, so I’ll learn new tricks, like putting SPF on my lips. It’s good for a day at the beach or even when you’re skiing or snowboarding. You worked with Norman Jean Roy for the suncare campaign. What was that like? It was such an easy shoot! We re-created the ocean in a studio. It was beautiful and really cool the way we played with mirrors. Are there any photographers you’d still like to work with? There are so many! Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Inez & Vinoodh, Mert & Marcus. I’ve done the towel series, but I’ve never shot a whole day with Mario Testino, so I’d love to do that. There are so many new ones who are incredible, too. Do you ever get nervous on set? Of course! I try to always be bikini-ready, but I travel a lot and I get lazy. If I travel for a week or two, sometimes I work out only once or twice, and I’m not eating as healthy, like a lot of pasta, especially in Milan! I let myself go a little bit. And then all of a sudden I have a shoot for Victoria’s Secret, and I’m like, “Oh, noooo! I’m not ready!” I try to hide and put my hands in front of my stomach a lot when I’m not feeling as confident. But at the end of the day, it is what it is. You’ve made several “sexiest” lists. What’s the dorkiest thing about you? What isn’t dorky about me?! I’m not a sexy person in real life. I do weird stuff, and I don’t take myself too seriously. When I’m with my friends, we say stupid things all day long. Why did your parents name you Sara? I was supposed to be named Maria, but my cousin Maria was born a few months before me. What’s the wackiest thing you’ve done for beauty? It’s not wacky, it’s scientifically proven! I get cold sores like everyone else, especially when I’m sick. I was at a job in the middle of nowhere, and I had nothing with me and I got a cold sore. I was googling what I could do. I read that garlic is really good for it, FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

so I gave it a try. I smashed the garlic, put it on, it burned like there was no tomorrow, but the next day it got a lot better! It smells horrible and burns a lot, but it really, really works. Alongside Moroccanoil’s new suncare range, what are your summer essentials? Face oils are amazing, and I always put Moroccanoil Treatment in my hair. For makeup, I keep it simple, so highlighter, mascara, sunscreen, and moisturizer. Where do you stock up on beauty products? I literally lose myself at Sephora. I spend so much money there. I don’t need any of it, but I’ll try it, and then I end up with this big bill! I get more excited about buying makeup and skin products than clothes. I don’t even shop for clothes! What would we be most surprised to learn about your beauty routine? I never blow-dry my hair, not even in the winter. It’s not straight, but not too wavy. It’s a nice texture, but I need the right haircut and the right prep. I love Moroccanoil conditioner—it makes your hair feel silky. Then I use Moroccanoil Treatment, and toweldry it, brush it, and let it be. Which models do you hang out with? My best friend, Sadie Newman, and I’m really good friends with Jasmine [Tookes], Lineisy [Montero], Josephine [Skriver]…all the girls, pretty much. I don’t get to spend as much time with my friend Shlomit Malka, because she lives in Israel now.

What are your hobbies these days? I haven’t had a lot of time lately, but I’ve been taking acting classes, which has been really fun. When I’m not working, I tend to watch a lot of TV shows. I watch too much TV! Game of Thrones, The Americans, Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, The Originals, Lucifer, How to Get Away With Murder, Scandal. Did I say Modern Family? [Laughs] When I’m on a plane, I just binge-watch. What were your summers like growing up? Always at the beach! Every day for three months, I’d go to the beach with my grandma and brother and cousin. That’s all we did. When I got older, I started surfing. We didn’t do many vacations. We used to go to Spain, but when I got older, we stayed in Porto, [Portugal]. What’s your favorite beach? That’s hard! I love Bora Bora and Hawaii for the aura and energy. If you have problems, they just go away. ß FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Adrienne Gaither

Trudy Benson

Lynnie Z

Thanks to its eye-catching bottles and delectable take on H2O, LIFEWTR’s splashy debut was hard to miss. Now, the luxury beverage purveyor has turned its attentions to emerging female artists Adrienne Gaither, Trudy Benson, and Lynnie Z, who have created artwork for LIFEWTR’s “Series 2” labels. By EDDIE ROCHE What was the concept for your bottles? Trudy Benson: I combined digital collage with detailed photos of a painting to create an abstract image with both texture and flat areas of color. Lynnie Z: It was important to me that the design connected with people. My idea was to keep it informal with a relaxed loose line. The concept of the design is a free-flowing, abstracted figurative image all around the bottle that feels intimate and explorative. Adrienne Gaither: Conceptually, my goal was to celebrate the interaction of color through movement, shapes, patterns, and contrast. I wanted to produce a design that highlighted my discipline as a colorist and geometric abstract painter. It’s also pretty awesome FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

that the “Series 2: Women in Art” bottles launched for the summer—our colors work perfectly with this weather! What were the challenges in creating your designs? Trudy: The challenge came in creating something that would translate to a palm scale and have the kind of legibility that is still eye-catching. Lynnie: I didn’t want my design to mix in with the usual graphics that you see on branded products. I saw this as a great opportunity to rethink how we can embellish the simple container of water that will inspire the everyday consumer’s creativity. Adrienne: Taking a step back to value and accept imperfection was my greatest challenge. I love the

work I do; sometimes I can obsess over the details and work a design into the abyss. LIFEWTR is raising awareness that works by female artists make up only between 3 and 5 percent of the permanent museum collections in the U.S. and Europe. Any thoughts on why the numbers are so low? Trudy: This is a tough question, and one that I am not fully qualified to answer. I agree with Lisa Phillips, director of the New Museum, who said that this inequality is part of a “deep cultural bias and persistent gender divide.” Lynnie: A few years ago, I heard this statistic for the first time and it never ceases to amaze me that the art world is still so out of balance when it comes to

“LIFEWTR is a brand born out of a purpose. We exist to advance and showcase the sources of creation and creativity.”

gender and diversity. Back when I was studying at art college, my class was made up of 99 percent women, so there are plenty of women out there. I think that most of us have been educated by an art world dominated by men and their work has filled galleries, museums, and books for centuries. Female art has been so poorly represented, and so few female artists have been able to have an impact on the status quo. How can that number change? Trudy: Because 51 percent of visual artists today are women, that number has the potential to change. I think it has to start at the commercial gallery level. Lynnie: Social media is an incredible mirror reflecting tastes and preferences. It has given women an opportunity to create their own platforms, and it’s showing in great numbers that these women have an audience! It’s important that the art world recognizes this and gives a more truthful representation of what’s really happening. Women are the creators of many communities, and this imbalance has been the trigger for us to come together and support one another’s creative ventures in the forms of collectives, group shows, workshops, and talks. Adrienne: That number can change by bringing awareness to the lack of women being represented, similar to what LIFEWTR is doing by creating a platform for female artists. It’s also important to make space for critical dialogues with more diverse and inclusive institutional culture, as well as interacting with artists’ communities outside of our immediate scopes. There should be more group and solo exhibitions of female-identified artists. These numbers could also change if there were a greater value, interest, and care for women in general. What are some of the challenges you face as a female artist? Trudy: On average, women still make less money

than men. Work by female artists is persistently undervalued compared with that of their male peers in both primary and secondary markets. Lynnie: My personal experience as a female artist has been pretty positive. I’ve always known that I have to try a lot harder. I found myself amongst a wonderful circle of female artists during my years at art college. Our lives are incredibly interwoven to this day. We all want to look out for one another, but no one wants to be brought on to a project as the token female, which has happened to many of us. Adrienne: Being an artist is hard. From Suprematism and the De Stijl movement to California hard edge, geometric abstraction is definitely a white man’s sport in the art world, so you can imagine the responses I get doing this work. I knew those challenges were going to be there when I decided geometric abstraction was my style of painting. I did it anyway. What do you hope to gain from this collaboration? Trudy: It would be incredible if my collaboration with LIFEWTR led to even one young woman deciding to pursue a career in the arts. Lynnie: This collaboration is a great opportunity to address a subject I feel quite passionate about, and that is hugely empowering. It’s important to bring the issue to the fore and allow people to connect with it, opening a creative discussion. Knowing we have a long way to go to gain a more equal balance certainly puts the fire in my belly to spread the word and inspire others. Adrienne: I hope to bring more awareness to the lack of representation for women in art and continue advocating that women of all backgrounds and disciplines be championed. ß

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! With Olga Osminkina-Jones, vice-president, hydration, PepsiCo

What’s the mission of the LIFEWTR brand? LIFEWTR is a brand born out of a purpose. We exist to advance and showcase the sources of creation and creativity. We are a platform for emerging artists, committed to providing talent with opportunities to grow and be discovered. Why did you decide to focus on female artists for the latest series? Every series of LIFEWTR is aimed at putting a spotlight on meaningful facts and tensions in culture. More than 50 percent of visual artists today are women, yet less than 5 percent of big permanent collections are works by female artists. These are facts worth talking about. Our goal is to provide a platform for female artists to garner greater exposure for their work, be celebrated for its quality, tell their stories, and reach a broader, more diverse audience. How did you find the emerging artists who designed the bottles? All our artists are selected based on the strength of their talent and depth of their stories. The selection is done in collaboration with a number of credible partners we work with in the space. Why was it important to work with emerging artists? LIFEWTR is a far-reaching platform that can be life-changing for an artist or talent who needs to be discovered and recognized far beyond a commercial collaboration. Hence our focus on emerging creators. Did you give them any direction on how the bottle should look? The artists had creative freedom to design the labels they saw fit. Needless to say, we are beyond thrilled with the outcome. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

The Playhouse was built in the 1920s by Carl Fisher, and it was originally envisioned as an indoor tennis arena; later, it was also used as a boxing arena. Up until World War II, it was used for recreation. During World War II, it was converted into a storage facility and troop assembly hall for the navy. In the ’50s, it was turned into a theater, hosting live performances and movies for more than two decades. When the building fell into disrepair, the town of East Hampton considered tearing it down. A grassroots group of local residents was committed to saving the building. They got together to form the Playhouse Foundation in 1999. The Town of East Hampton committed $6 million to shore up the interior and exterior structures, and to finish half the space. In 2005–2006, the Town opened a gymnasium, a senior nutrition and day-care center. The building has a town clerk annex, an independent child-care center, as well as two for-profit businesses—a physical-therapy office and a BodyTech gym. The building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. How did the renovations start? When I came to the Foundation a year ago, they had already secured $2.5 million from 1,100 individual donors, which is currently safely invested. During the past year, I have been able to meet with year-round and second-home owners to gather information and ensure that our plan meets the varied needs of all residents. New commitments of $500,000 have been secured; we now have a total of $3 million in private FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

donations. The Town of East Hampton recognizes the importance of this project, and has resolved to match the total funds raised—$3 million. What was the next phase? Over the course of the year, I have worked closely with our Town Supervisor, Larry Cantwell, and Deputy Supervisor, Peter Van Scoyoc, and several members of their team, to evaluate our business plan to assure that the community center, once up and running, will not be reliant on continued Town funding. The community center will be self-sustaining through program and rental revenues. This was a key factor in gaining our $3 million match. What’s the total cost? Our total budget is about $8 million. So now you need $2 million more! Yes, we need everyone who is part of the community to come together and support the project. I feel confident that with the renewed interest and municipal support, it’s going to happen. On August 5th, we’re hosting our annual Gala for the Playhouse, “Celebrating the Art of Surfing,” honoring Tony Caramanico, Evelyn O’Doherty, James Katsipis, and Peter Spacek. It’s always a great party, and it will help us bring awareness to the project and the progress we’re making. What’s the completed Playhouse going to look like? The expanded facility will be a vibrant

gathering place for all of Montauk’s eclectic residents and visitors. The multi-use Cultural Arts Center will be home to live theater and musical performances, educational classes, movies, and events. The flexible facility will enable us to partner with local businesses and provide space for conferences and meetings, and numerous social gatherings for children, teens, adults, and seniors. I like to say that our ability to offer programming at the Playhouse is limited only by our imagination. We can be as creative as we want, and experiment with a lot of different kinds of programming, letting the community tell us what they’re interested in. What does the Aquatic Center entail? The Aquatic Center’s mission is to provide water safety and swimming competence, which will help ensure the health and safety of all of Montauk’s families. It will have a 25-yard lap pool and a 30-x-30 leisure and rehabilitation pool. Once completed, we will offer fitness programming, rehabilitation therapy, exercise classes, and swim instruction for all levels. Montauk is surrounded by water on three sides— we want to make sure that everyone here knows how to swim. What is your timeline? The Foundation is currently working with our architects and engineers to complete plans and go through the permitting process. It’s likely that construction will begin during 2018, and it should take between 12 and 15 months to complete. You live in Amagansett year-round now. How are you liking life out here? I feel really lucky. It’s a beautiful place and a wonderful community. This is one of the most special places in the world. ß

FITNESS FORCE Taryn Toomey and her cathartic, caloriemelting, feel-good workout, The Class, has everyone from Naomi Watts to your co-worker hooked on endorphins. With a Lululemon collaboration and Hamptons classes under way, Toomey gives us the scoop. BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER

How does a former fashion exec become a fitness guru? I started working at the Ralph Lauren store in the Hamptons, and eventually I got a job at the office in the city and started climbing the corporate ladder. After Ralph Lauren, I was an account executive at Dior. I had left Ralph Lauren thinking I was unhappy with the company, and then I realized it was the line of work that wasn’t fulfilling me. I jumped ship and did a monthlong intensive yoga-teacher training with the expectation that I was going to return to New York and resume my career. But I ended up loving that life, and hit the pavement in New York teaching at different places. How did that turn into The Class? I’d always wanted to invent something, like the vacuum or the boomerang. [Laughs] I had no idea it could be a modality. The Class began as a way to help heal, because I lost a mentor of mine, whom I loved dearly. It was never supposed to be anything. I would teach on my friend’s deck and sent the money to FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

support the children my mentor cared for. My contact stopped responding for some time, so I looked into renting a space with the money. I had a time slot at a dance studio, hired a photographer to shoot it, and created a website on Squarespace with a sign-up link. That was September 2013. I added more classes, and they would sell out. I wanted to give up like 50,000 times, but every time I said I was going to stop, there’d be a wait-list. It was the community that kept showing up and asking for more that kept it going. Who’s taking The Class? It started with me and a bunch of my mom friends, but it’s changed. We have a lot of creative types, people who are willing and open-minded, people who come to heal because they are in the throes of something. I’ll introduce myself to people before class, kneel down and say welcome, and sometimes they’ll start crying. We have people who just want to come for the workout, or people in the world of yoga who want a little more fire. We have men coming. We’re starting a teen class, and a 17-year-old just

finished her teacher training. We have older women or people who are injured who come for the feeling in the room. This work is really for everyone. You just have to be a human. Why do you think it has such a following? If I’m completely straightforward, The Class is a manifestation of my life. I’m talking to myself in there. It’s constantly changing, and I think that’s why people keep coming back. I speak about all these things in such a vague way so that people say to me at the end of class, “You were talking to me the whole time.” I strongly believe in teaching the message of community and being kind to one another. You won’t find people being snarky or talking about calories. Sure, you will lose weight, you’ll get strong, you’ll get lean, but you don’t need to talk about that because it’s the obvious. It’s about how you are feeling, not what you’re looking like. Your playlists are almost as popular as the class! I was probably a DJ in a past life. [Laughs] You must

“the class is a manifestation of my life. i’m talking to myself in there.” know your music—the beat, when chords hit, how to count down. You’re creating an experience and people are trusting you to guide them. The sounds, the light, the scent—everything should create a feeling, and that’s what I use the music for. We work with this theory of contraction and expansion—so contraction of the muscle for a song, and then expansion and flushing with cardio and sweating. Some have called it “the screaming class.” Is there truth to that? People always say “the screaming class” or “the chanting class.” We’re not doing that! The message in this room is stay in your body and do whatever you need to do. If you need to laugh, you laugh; if you need to weep, you weep; if you need to stand

there and breathe, breathe. You cannot do this class wrong. Oftentimes when you’re giving people the space to feel something, and you’re creating an experience through music, sound, community, sweat, embodiment, and feelings, people make a lot of noise. There’s not a lot of space that we have in this world where you can do that. It’s almost like an exhaust pipe as opposed to a scream, a forceful exhale that’s emotive. We’re making that sound after creating a lot of tension in the body. When I say, “Make sound if you need to make sound,” that’s when the room usually fires. I’m asking people to bring things in the room and process… and at the same time, you’re sculpting your ass and you’re lengthening your body and burning calories. [Laughs] Do you remember the first time someone cried in The Class? I invited Naomi [Watts’] acting coach to a class when I met her at a premiere. Within five minutes she was on her hands and knees and she was sobbing! When that happens, I ask the room to hold space. After class, she said, “I couldn’t help it—you bypassed my brain and went directly to my heart.” I am asking people to do big movements and transition to complete stillness with hands on heart and ask, how are you feeling? What’s your relationship with Naomi like? I met her through The Class, and we have this little circle of gals who hang out. I have a really special place in my heart for her. She’s supported me since early on. The first time a story about The Class came out with her name in it I was horrified. I reached out to her and said, “Oh, my God, I am so sorry!” And she said, “Are you kidding me? You better tell them that I was the first one.” That’s her style. I honor who she is as a human and as a spirit and as a sister. She’s supported me by allowing her name to be attached to The Class and standing next to me in Vogue, but it’s far-reaching. She’s everything that people believe she is and more. She’s a real gem. Tell us about your Lululemon collection, which is out this summer. It’s so exciting! They supported me before The Class had a name. The girls in the Soho store would tell me I had something special and encouraged me to do a TEDx conference in Vancouver, where I met their CEO. We went back and forth and I started designing, showed it to them, and they wanted to make it a bigger thing. It was so organic and it just made sense. I don’t look at anything right now and think my gut told me not to do it and I did it. Everything has been about what feels right. ß

FITNESS “I teach seven classes a week, plus events. I do Laurie Cole’s SoulCycle on Saturdays. I meditate every day, otherwise my adrenals will burn out.”

BEAUTY “I use Dr. Barbara Sturm Blood Cream, and I’ve been taking collagen. I always use sunscreen and masks, like Joanna Vargas Bright Eye Hydrating Mask. I use Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence throughout the day.”

FOOD AM: “I drink a morning tonic, and take a probiotic and some supplements. I usually have hard-boiled eggs or half an avocado. If I’m on the go, I have a smoothie, and I always have coffee with almond milk.” PM: “I’m very much a seasonal eater. Sometimes I eat a lot of fish and sometimes I’m vegan. I don’t eat dairy. I eat a lot of greens. I go in and out of the nut thing. I’m hooked on kale chips from Juice Press. My body craves salt!”

Fashion “Isabel Marant, The Row, Lululemon, Zara, and H&M.”

Sakara Life has quickly earned a cult-like following for its ultra-healthy vegetarian meals that are delivered directly to your doorstep. How did you team up? Whitney Tingle: Danielle and I grew up in Sedona, Arizona, and we’ve known each other since junior high. It’s a spiritual mecca where people come to seek physical and spiritual healing. We had an atypical upbringing—my mom would make me sandwiches on brown bread with twigs and berries sticking out of it. [Laughs] We both moved to New York City—Danielle to study medicine, and I worked on Wall Street. I had an 80-hour workweek, and I gained 15 to 20 pounds and my cystic acne was at an all-time worst. Something was telling me to find the root cause. I turned back to my Sedona upbringing and the idea of food as medicine. Whitney: In 2012, we were cooking the food ourselves and delivering it on bicycles. In 2013, we quit our jobs and hired our first employee. What’s the story behind the brand’s name? Whitney: Sakara is a Sanskrit word that means “giving form to something that doesn’t have form.” What were your diets like pre-Sakara? Danielle: I did everything! [Laughs] We thought we were eating healthy, all organic and high-fiber foods, but they were overprocessed and lifeless. One of the keys to living the Sakara life is getting enough plants. Who were some early adopters? Danielle: Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the first—she found us in 2013.

Whitney: Lily Aldridge has been a client for years. Which chefs are you working with? Whitney: Chefs from around the world, like Matthew Kenney, one of the best plant-based chefs. What are your favorite meals on the menu? Danielle: Our riceless risotto with coconut milk, herbs, trumpet mushrooms, and broccolini. Whitney: I am doing Level 2: Detox, so I did not eat that. And if it’s a good waffle and not a naughty waffle, it’s even better. Tell us more about Level 2: Detox. Danielle: We had a lot of clients who were looking for the next level, so we created Level 2 with Dr. Aviva Romm, a functional medicine doctor. Level 2 is based on a diet that helps your body go into ketosis, which means removing things like grains and sweeteners. What is the S-Life Pyramid? Danielle: The pyramid is to help people understand that food is the foundation on which you create the life that you want. Whitney: Food affects everything in your life: brain clarity, work performance, sex drive and relationships, creativity, and sense of self. You have to nourish each level to get to that spiritual beyond. What are you favorite eateries in the Hamptons? Whitney: Duryea’s for its giant house salad, Wölffer Kitchen, and EMP Summer House. When you aren’t eating Sakara, what are you indulging in? Danielle: I eat what I want, and most of the time that’s plant-rich foods. But we always say we are the first to grab French fries and a martini! What are your fitness obsessions? Danielle: I am newly addicted to SoulCycle! Whitney: I just started using Caravan Wellness. In Search of Weight Loss... Yesterday at 05:35 AM

Dear Hamptonites, In celebration of The Beauty & Body issue, I’m compelled to share that I’ve never met a diet or fitness trend that I didn’t immediately love…and then loathe following its inevitable failure. Every time I open some clickbait article about the miraculous power of the Booty Belt, I, too, am certain that my best body ever is merely $49.99 away. When it comes to diets, pills, and schemes, I’ve tried them all—and yet I’m not exactly Gisele. Among my short-term flings? THE SOUTH BEACH DIET What could be more effective than eating 40 string cheeses a day? I earnestly crammed dozens of dairy products and deli turkey slices into my face, aiming to drop four dress sizes in a week. I swanned through life feeling on top of the world, albeit a bit gassy from the cheese, only to wake up on Sunday morning with an empty pizza box on my pillow. Totes counted it as veggies and whole grains! SOULCYCLE My nether regions are still upset. After a brutal morning class, I walked like I was perma-auditioning for a spaghetti Western for the remainder of the day. Fun fact: The teachers can’t really tell if you’re cranking up the resistance. SAKARA An ode to Whitney and Danielle—you two platinum goddesses should win the Nobel Prize. I’d do anything to be your friend. Sakara is totally genius—it takes all the guesswork out of eating healthfully and mindfully. All I needed to do was eat the delightful plastic containers chock-full of culinary delights. So I have only myself to blame for my failure, as somehow I don’t think the seven tequila sodas that I enjoyed at work events, three nights in a row, was included in the program. Does Promises have a meal plan? HOODIA Yes, I once ordered this quasi-banned drug from a random website—the best place to secure medicalgrade pharmaceuticals, non? I wish I could report more on the experience, but I took a pill, blacked out, and forgot my name. I have a vague memory of seeing strange colors in the bathroom…and no, I don’t mean hallucinations. I don’t recall being hungry, though, so perhaps I should revisit? ANY BARRE CLASS, EVER I’ve tried them all and have always walked out after 22 minutes of hell. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to feel like some makeup-wearing ex-ballerina is blasting my thighs with a flamethrower. And if you tell me to do one more crunch with that stupid ball, well…you can shove it up your toned behind. Maybe I’m just not a girl who flaunts a flat tummy in a tiny lace bralette without looking like Anna Nicole Smith, pre-TrimSpa. Note to self: Order TrimSpa, stat. Sigh…I’ll always have my muumuus and Miu Mius!

JErsey Shore Edition!

Adriana 27, jewelry designer, Little Words Project What brings you to the Shore? We have a trunk show selling our jewelry on Arnold Avenue. We’ve recently ventured into doing some influencing on social media. How many followers do you have on Instagram? My personal page has about 1,800. What do you think of the style at the Jersey Shore? I love it here. I’ve been coming here my whole life. I’m obviously a Jersey Girl! Thoughts on guidos? I don’t think the guido thing is a thing. What do you do in the Hamptons? I’ve only been a couple of times. It’s a little too ritzy for me. It costs an arm and a leg to get there. I’m done with all that! Who is Tracy Anderson? She was on Baywatch.

Mariah 24, brand directOR Thoughts on the Jersey Shore? I prefer the beaches in Florida. They’re a little less cluttered, and the water is a little cleaner. But the Shore holds a place in my heart— you can be yourself and have a good time. It brings you back home! Where is Montauk? I know Montauk because of the show Big Little Lies. Didn’t that happen there? Actually, it was Monterey, California, but close! No way! Who is Tracy Anderson? Give me a hint! Blonde! She’s a blogger! Who are you wearing today? The skirt is H&M, and my top is from T.J. Maxx. I’m such a Maxxinista! And my lips are from Kylie Cosmetics. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

MATT 18, senior beach attendant What does your job entail? I tell the beach boys where to go and clean up. We want to make sure everything is nice for the customers. Was it your dream to work here? I wouldn’t call it a dream, but I love it here. What do people misunderstand about the Jersey Shore? A lot of people hate paying to come onto the beach. They don’t understand that these are all privately owned, and people have to clean them up. How much is a slice of pizza around here? Three or four bucks. It’s inflated on the boardwalk. Where is Montauk? It’s near the Hamptons! Well done! Who is Tracy Anderson? A government official. Am I close?

What brings you to the Jersey Shore? We’re on a family vacation from Georgia. Tomorrow, we’re doing the yacht tour of the Hudson River. What do you think the Hamptons is like? Like this, but a little better. What is Nick & Toni’s? A pizza place. What’s SoulCycle? Those people who bicycle across New Jersey. What is Amagansett? Can you use it in a sentence? Never mind! Where is Sag Harbor? Somewhere in Jersey. Who is Tracy Anderson? An actress. Who are you wearing today? Forever 21.

Are you named after The King? My father was a fan! What’s your favorite Elvis song? That’s not the kind of music I listen to. The only song I know is “Blue Suede Shoes.” What’s the difference between the Jersey Shore and the Hamptons? I only went near the Hamptons once. It looked beautiful. Both seem to be fast-paced. Have you had any celebrity sightings here? I’ve seen Housewives of New Jersey husbands at the Nike outlet store in Paramus. What’s the cocktail of choice at the Jersey Shore? Gin and tonic with Tanqueray.

What brings you to the Jersey Shore? I’ve been coming here for as long as I can remember. How’s the traffic? It’s always been bad! Would you take a ’copter here? Probably not. That’s a little pricey. Have you ever been to the Hamptons? Never. I’ve heard it’s very rich. There’s a mix of crowds, depending on where you go. It’s Hoboken-esque. Have you had any celebrity sightings around here? No, but there are a lot in Bergen County and Paramus. We see Ja Rule and Sway, the MTV VJ. Who makes your swimsuit? Forever 21.

KARA 19, works in retAIL How often do you get to the Jersey Shore? I do day trips every summer. I used to go down to Wildwood for like a week at the end of August, but now we come to Point Pleasant. What do you typically do here? I come for the boardwalk. It’s the best! I love to go to the shops. The Aquarium is so cute. Everyone is so friendly. Do you ever go to Seaside, New Jersey? I went once. I wasn’t a fan. It went downhill. There are so many clubs on the boardwalk. Did you see Snooki? No, but I saw Mike! You know, “The Situation.” He was in Wildwood. There were bodyguards around him. It was pretty weird. I also saw the house that they lived in. People can take tours of it now. What do you think the Hamptons is like? I imagine beaches for miles and everyone is really tan. Is the pizza better in New Jersey or New York? It’s way better here. It’s so good and greasy. The slices are much bigger!

MATT 16, beach attendant You’re a local! Why is this place called Point Pleasant? I never really cared. What’s your summer job? We do umbrella rentals and stuff, and we clean. Good way to meet girls? Noble moment What’s your background? I’m from Mississippi, and I went to law school at UVA. I practiced security law in the city, and then consulted for Mark Burnett’s company for a few months. We were consulting for The Apprentice’s third season. I got into real estate in 2005 at Corcoran, and switched over to Douglas Elliman two years ago. Did you meet President Trump? I did, but I didn’t have any substantive meetings—it was just hand-shaking and hellos. Are you named after anyone? Yes, my grandfather was Noble Felix Black. They dropped the Felix, thankfully! What got you into real estate? I always loved real estate—the architecture, design, décor. Even as a little kid, I loved to go to open houses on Sundays. The only thing I really enjoyed about practicing law was the client contact. Real estate is a good combination of those skills and the things that I enjoy. I thought I would always like it, but I was scared to try it. I gave myself a certain amount of time to make it work. Frankly, every year since then,

While he spends many weekdays sealing deals in Manhattan, Noble Black finds respite from the grind in Sag Harbor. This top Douglas Elliman agent shows us how to live the good life! BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN KEINAN

I’ve done better than I would have done if I were still practicing law. Many of your listings are in Manhattan, but you have some major Hamptons properties, too. We have a listing at Montauk, but I mostly focus on Manhattan. We just listed a new property in New Jersey, as well, which is spectacular. It’s absolutely over the top. If 30,000 square feet can feel warm and livable, it does. It has amazing finishes, tons of space, beautiful country, tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, basketball court, a movie theater, and a wine cellar. What makes you so effective at your job? I think I have the right mix of skills, and I feel fortunate that I found something that rewards that. I always tell people that it’s not rocket science, but frankly, I think I’m smarter than most. I’m very ethical and honest. I legitimately care for my clients, whether they’re buyers or sellers. I want to get them what they want, whether that’s the highest price or a great property. Personally, it can be very gratifying.

You have a home in Sag Harbor. Why’d you pick that nabe? My fiancé, Marc [Rozic], and I have good friends who live around the corner from us, and we would visit and stay with them sometimes. Out of all the towns in the Hamptons, Sag felt the most authentic to me. It’s changed a lot in the past three years, but it still has the most year-round residents and there is still a normalcy to it. I also really like that we’re on Main Street, and we’re just a few minutes away from downtown, where all the restaurants are. It’s the most harbor-centric of all the villages, and feels like it’s really about the boating and yachting. What’s your taste when it comes to architecture and design? The house in Sag was built in 1840, and it’s very traditional. The living room is lacquered; the patio is all navy and white-striped. When I go out there, I want to feel like I’m in Sag Harbor—it should be classic, old-school, and very quaint. In terms of fashion, what’s your sense of style? Classic and preppy. I pretty much have a uniform:

jeans and a button-down and a blazer, or khaki shorts and a polo. If it’s casual, then J.Crew or Club Monaco. For work, I either have suits and shirts made, or it’s Ralph Lauren or Hermès. What are your favorite Hamptons haunts? We love Wölffer Kitchen, The Beacon, Almond, and East Hampton Grill. How do you like to unwind? I’m a huge gardener, and our friends just bought East Hampton Gardens, so we spend a lot of time there. We have a lot of friends on Shelter Island, so we’ll drive over and do dinner or go to Vine Street Café. How’s your green thumb? It’s greening. [Laughs] It’s made greener with the help of an architect and a maintenance crew. I’m a really good pruner and weeder. Marc told me last week that it’s become an obsession, which is probably true. Our friend, Joe Cornetta, is one of the most prominent landscape designers out here, and he’s really the one who did our yard. How else do you spend your downtime? Honestly, I’m either working or gardening. We try,

usually unsuccessfully, to have a lazy weekend at the beach or on friends’ boats, but it’s pretty much spent piddling with the house restorations and the garden. Where do you get your fitness fix during the summer? A Friday morning or afternoon with SoulCycle’s Stacey [Griffith] is a great way to start my weekend. We just got bikes, so we’ll bike around town a lot in the afternoons. I just did the Tracy Anderson workout a couple of times. At first I was laughing because I was picturing Jane Fonda back in the ’80s, knowing that I looked like an idiot, until it started kicking my ass. Of course, when it was done, I could barely stand. What’s on tap this summer? It’ll be a stream of guests coming through, and different events and fund-raisers. Marc and I are getting married next March, so that’s the next big thing to look forward to. I won’t say it’s been a full-time job, but wedding planning has been a lot! ß

“On a perfect day, we’ll meet friends for evening drinks at the American Hotel or for an early dinner on the terrace at The Beacon.”

When he finds time to unwind, here is where you’ll find Noble…

“We’ll put the top down for a drive to our friends at East Hampton Gardens, Marders, or on Shelter Island. Then we bike ride around the village or walk around Otter Pond and through Oakland Cemetery, which sounds creepy, but is actually beautiful!”

“On Saturdays, we go to SoulCycle or the Sag Harbor Gym in the morning, and then Provisions or Harbor Market.”

Ed Patrowicz’s love for surfing has taken him to Hawaii and Costa Rica, but the beaches of Montauk are his true happy place. The Corcoran agent weighs in on life out East! BY KRISTEN HEINZINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN KEINAN

Before Montauk, you were living in Hawaii. Do tell! I grew up on Long Island, and after college I took some time off and went to Hawaii. I ended up staying for 10 years. I had studied film and photography in college, and I got a good job in Hawaii in the production and post-production industry. Also, surfing kept me there. [Laughs] I was offered a job in New York City and moved back. Eventually, a group of us started our own visual effects and graphic/editing company. I did that for eight years. Once I turned 50, I sold my company and moved out to Montauk. What drew you there? I had been coming out to Montauk since I was a kid. I had older brothers and friends who would take me out there to surf on Saturdays. That was my first taste of the area. I kept coming out whenever I could, and I spent a few summers there working at restaurants. What did your previous job entail? We did mostly television documentaries, but we FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

did several real estate and travel ones as well. One of my favorite things to do was aerial photography, especially for real estate. I used to work on most of the Pepsi campaigns, and I got to work with Joan Jett for a music video at one point. What’s your taste in music like? My dad really influenced my taste—it’s very specific. I’m always seeking out rare reissues of jazz recordings. I like straight-up jazz, like Chet Baker, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis. And rock ’n’ roll, of course. Music has always been a really important part of my life. Do you still dabble in photography? Yeah, I love photography. Now that I have an 8-yearold daughter, she’s my main subject. [Laughs] I’m also an aerial photographer and a drone pilot. In addition to Montauk, you have a home in Costa Rica. We built the home in Costa Rica around the same time we built one in Montauk. We used to spend a fair amount of time there. My daughter went to preschool and kindergarten there. At that time I was working in real estate, so I was going back and forth. It’s a wonderful spot—it’s got great surfing. You’ve done a solid amount of beach living—how does it all stack up? You can’t beat the beauty and the whole vibe of Hawaii. But there’s something special about the East End that has always drawn me back. There are still some great little private crannies I like to visit on Long Island.

How do you like to unwind? Real estate is demanding, but I always find time to recharge. Surfing is a big part of that. If I have a busy day, I always try to find the time to take a couple of hours to have a swim with my wife and daughter. How else do you spend your time out East? We like doing stand-up paddleboarding as a family, usually at Navy Beach. There are a lot of great hiking opportunities in Montauk. Sometimes we go down to the beach and camp and cook outside. When school starts, we try to stick to a more rigid schedule, but I like to take my daughter to concerts and plays. The No. 1 thing is spending time with my wife and daughter. Which local events are on your calendar? There is an outdoor musical event in September to benefit the lighthouse and the Montauk Oceans Institute. It’s on the grounds of the lighthouse, which is just so beautiful. I’m really looking forward to it! ß
