He’s constantly showing the audience new things, and he has faith in our ability to move with his changes. He doesn’t talk down—he just brings us with him. Nothing like a surprise!

what’s your backstory? I started off as a reporter in the newsroom of BBC. Four years later, having acquired a level of debt as a journalist that was difficult to service, I got a job working with Margaret Thatcher at Number 10 in the press office for about three and a half years. After that, I became Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s press secretary for four years. I adore Prince Charles and the boys. Funnily enough, I’m involved in pro-bono work with Prince William and Prince Harry to establish a charitable foundation here. when did you join mercedes-benz? I was writing speeches to pay the bills for Burson-Marsteller, and the CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK was a client. I accepted a job with them about 12 years ago. what does luxury mean today? Every brand claims to be luxury, but

that’s nonsense—it’s a personal choice about what enriches your life, whether it’s a cashmere scarf or a boat. What goes into making a car is the same level of engineering and understanding that goes into making haute couture. Did you know the difference between Zac and marc when you started? I did. I have a dirty little secret. I had already been director of communications for Mercedes-Benz UK for a year when Saint Martins put a proposal on my desk to sponsor an amazing young designer that they believed in. I looked through the book and thought it was too edgy for us. Now, I wear Alexander McQueen a lot. That shows you how much I knew about fashion when I started! which mbFw launch has been particularly successful? The CLS four-door coupe we used as our Fashion Force car with Brad Goreski. That gave the car real buzz. I knew

that it worked when my colleague called and said, ‘I wish I would have thought of that!’ That’s my kind of litmus test. what’s been happening this week? We launched the new SL with Lara Stone. Fashion’s Night In was also fun! And we’re making jewelry out of car materials! which mercedes-benz do you own? Luckily, I get them for free! I drive a CL 63 AMG in Meridian Gray. how many mercedes-benz cars have you driven over the years? I change my mind about three times a year, so I’ve had 36 so far. what’s the ultimate amenity? Massaging seats. When you turn, the seat hugs and turns with you. If you’re on a straight, long journey, you can set the massage. With his own line, his own showroom, his own stores, and his own uncanny ability to suss out the zeitgeistiest indie designers, Steven Alan remains one of fashion’s most low-profile arbiters. Now that he’s presenting at Fashion Week, however, we demanded an interview! BY MARIA DENARDO PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIORGIO NIRO

ee

there’s something about

st v n

F

irst things first: those reverseseam shirts. How many have you sold at this point? [grabs calculator] Over 100,000. Do people think ‘Steven Alan’ is two different designers? All the time! Either that, or they don’t believe there’s a real Steven Alan at all. They’ll say things like, ‘You work for Steven Alan, right? What’s your name?’ I’ll say Steven, but they still don’t put it together. When you opened the first Steven Alan store on Wooster Street in 1994, SoHo was a rough neighborhood. Ever get into any street squabbles? Not in SoHo, but I was mugged a lot as a kid growing up in New York—everything from my entire bicycle to just my chain. I got mugged at gunpoint when I graduated college. Even my slice of pizza was mugged once! How do you find new talent? We typically have 10 to 20 designers approach us in a year for the showroom. For the store, we have designers approaching us on a daily basis. But I’m also a ferocious reader—I start on Tumblr—and I find brands there. Where are you looking these days? Paris, Scandinavia, and Japan. Japan has great brands such as Zuka, Undercover, Cosmic Wonder, Nano Universe, and United Arrows. We rep great brands here, too, like Lover and Karen Walker. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. C O M

Which designers perform well? Clare Vivier is doing extremely well right now, along with No. 6. Cardigan has received great feedback. And this is our first season with Loyal, but the reaction has been great. What’s flying off the shelves? Our line is the number one-selling brand with shirting and dresses as top sellers. After our brand, Isabel Marant is big. How many staffers do you have? About 90. What is your management technique? I’m not the best manager, which is why I have a president. I hire people who like to run their own things. The people that hate being micromanaged love this environment because they set their own agenda. It’s much more rewarding, and great ideas come from that. Why aren’t more companies replicating your three-pronged approach? Well, my accountant recommended against it! It’s much easier to just open a boutique. Your odds of success are greatly reduced if you try to do everything. We’re lucky that we have something special going on. You sold a minority stake in April. How has that affected the company? Luckily, I had a great investor in Tom Kartsotis, and the deal came about organically. I never went out in the market to solicit bids. People always

came to us, but it never felt right. I didn’t want to sell the company. It’s always been about building the brand long-term, and Tom had no agenda or timeline to flip it. Whatever we need, we ask and he helps us with it. How do you deal with Fashion Week? I’m not a big fan of going to all these shows. It stresses me out, so I don’t go to very many unless we’re repping someone or a friend of mine is showing. It’s so much air kissing. People are coming up to me for interviews, and while I certainly don’t want to offend The New York Times and talk to some little blog instead…I don’t know who anyone is! Should young designers produce shows, or host private appointments? It depends. Some designers are made for shows, and they live for that, but there’s no reason to do a runway show if the line isn’t dramatic. Too many brands spend thousands of dollars to put on a show, and then go bust. We’re very cautious. We’ve only done presentations. We might do a virtual fashion show in the future. Thoughts on Theyskens’ Theory? Interesting. It was a smart move to add another layer. Kanye? I don’t remember seeing the whole line, but it’s not something that comes to mind as inspirational. It’s interesting

that he’s pretty serious in learning about the business, so I think his approach was smart. Thoughts on Andrew Rosen? He’s like the Godfather of the Garment District. I admire what he’s done with a lot of companies. There aren’t that many people who are that interested in the smaller brands. What happened to Vena Cava? I like them a lot, and I like what they do. We spoke when they stopped the company. It’s hard to say what exactly happened, but what I can say is that when you really rely on certain stores, one direction change or shift within the store can radically impact the business. Has the hipster movement affected your business? Yes—especially with menswear. Guys are really into brands that represent something iconic, and we’ve been doing that since the beginning. Are you a hipster? No. I like farm-to-table restaurants and riding my bicycle, but I also go to bed at 10:30. And I have a baby seat in the back of my car! What’s next for Steven Alan? I’ve always viewed the company as neighborhood stores, but we can go pretty far with that. I’d like to have one or two stores in all the major cities and elevate our status without it feeling like a mass market brand. R u n WAY: S l AV E n V l A S i C /g E T T Y i m Ag E S ( 7 )

Backstory, please! I was born in Denmark, and I’ve been a makeup artist for 26 years. Before that, I was a beautician and a masseuse. I also had a brief episode as a bodybuilding instructor. What?! I had a boyfriend who was a bodybuilder at the time. We opened up a gym together in Copenhagen. I wasn’t a bodybuilder myself, per se, but we trained other people to compete. We even had athletes make it to the Olympics! How are body builders similar to makeup artists? There’s a joint fascination with the beauty of the body—both are selfconscious about symmetry. Not to mention the tan, the oil, and the whole bit. What were your early beauty days like? No one would work with me because I didn’t have a portfolio, so I bought a camera, made up my girlfriends, and nabbed my first editorial with French Vogue. Back in the day, there was no retouching. We had this blond model for the shoot who had the worst skin imaginable. There was nothing I could do about it, so for fun, we put a pair of sunglasses on the back of her head for one shot. That was the image they ended up using! Since then, I’ve worked with clients from YSL to Gwyneth Paltrow. Then you joined Maybelline New York? I worked on a campaign about 10 years ago with Erin Wasson for a relaunch of Maybelline's" Great Lash. In 2008, I was asked to be the global makeup artist at the company. It’s been such an interesting journey to push Maybelline to be known as a fashion-forward brand instead of the supermarket brand it was for many years. What backstage beauty trend of yours caused the biggest stir? The blue lashes we did at DKNY were big. We mixed blue eye shadow with Vaseline. What are your customers asking for now? Glamour with a natural feel. And lots of shimmer in eye shadow, lipstick, and on the skin. What are your daily duties when it comes to product development? I create limited-edition lines for Fashion Week. Sometimes they actually make it into the final Maybelline collections. I also create about 10 lipsticks, eight quads of eye shadows and blushes, and 16 nail polishes a year, but that number varies since we sell different product to various countries. What are your top sellers? Color Sensational Red Revival is the number-one selling red across brands in the U.S. Color Sensational Nearly There and Are You Reddy are also high in sales. Our Color Sensational Lipcolor line won the Glammy Award for Best Products of 2009 in Germany and the CEW Award for Best Lip at Mass for the U.S. Any favorites? I like bright colors such as Color Sensational in Fifth Ave Fuchsia, Red Revival, and Coral Crush. The older you get, the better it looks to have a strong lip color. What’s your connection with supermarkets? Supermarkets are the best places to find inspiration—there are so many mountains of color! I like to go to Whole Foods. Trader Joe’s isn’t as inviting. How often do you spend time in Whole Foods? At least once a day when I’m in New York. I’m all about quick input. Which aisle have you culled the most color stories from? It’s all about the fruits and vegetables! The international food section is really great, too. I don’t tend to just look at labels or one thing. The big picture is what I really look at—how all the food appears side-byside. I’ll look at the lentils and mix that color with, say, dry noodles. What percentage of your final products are inspired by fruits and veggies, canned goods, and the deli? Fruit and veggies are 30 percent, so are canned goods. I’m never inspired by the meat! What about fish? Oh yes, lots of great peaches and light pinks have come from the fish bins. What’s inspiring you the most these days? Concentrated syrup. I’m really into liquid in general, including this Whole Foods grapefruit soda. It’s all lip gloss to me. Look at those juices! It’s an explosion of color at every corner!

Supermarkets are the best places to find inspiration—there are so many mountains of color!”
