The Daily Wonders… What’s the last thing you ingested?

YOUR DAILY DOSE TV  WATCH! With Christian Siriano at nyfw

How do you like to wind down at the end of a long day? I’m watching Good Girls, which is so good. My friend Christina Hendricks is in it. I watch it all for her. I’m also watching the final season of Orange Is the New Black because those are all my friends. I’ve been working with them since the show’s first season. I’m really into a lot of action movies. It’s my escape. Like the new John Wick movie? It was amazing. [Keanu Reeves] is a really good actor. Let’s talk Fashion Week. What inspired your latest collection? I wanted it to be part art, part surrealism. There were some Jeff Koons pieces I was really inspired by. I wanted it to be an artistinspired collection.

SKIN SAVIORS

With Phenic’s Co-Founders, Sophia El-Hayek & Alexandra Haigis

What kinds of ingredients are in your line? Sophia El-Hayek: Each ingredient is thoughtfully chosen for a specific purpose. We’ve selected real power players that multitask, such as rose hip seed, vitamin E, olive oil, squalane oil, honey, shea butter, jasmine, and rose. What’s the story behind your first product, the Oil Cream Facial Moisturizer? Alexandra Haigis: The recipe is meaningful—it’s an adaptation of one that was passed down to Sophia from her grandmother, and was in her family for generations. We swapped out a few ingredients, preserving authenticity while increasing efficacy and sustainability. PROMOTION

Welcome back, darlings. It’s trade show time. • Get ready for the first-ever COTERIE Awards, powered by THE DAILY, which will celebrate an array of standout brands and retailers on Sunday, September 15. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., and the awards start at 6:10 p.m. sharp in the North Concourse. Expect some fab presenters and chic guests! • Strategizing how to hit all brands on your radar this season? Just download the new COTERIE app to navigate the massive trade show like a pro. Keep those push notifications on for intel on panels, cocktails, and more.

TOMMY HILFIGER! What was it like working with Zendaya on the NYFW show? She has always been a style icon, and after working with her, I can say that she also has a keen eye for design. What was her vision? The women of the ’70s were a big inspiration. We’ve brought the power dressing of that era back in a new way.

ZENDAYA!

What appealed to you about working with Tommy Hilfiger— the man, and the brand? I absolutely love fashion, and Tommy Hilfiger is such an iconic brand. I couldn’t think of a better way, or person, to learn the ins and outs of the fashion industry from, than Tommy himself. How did you first get acquainted with the brand? Tommy has always been a major brand and an iconic figure in pop culture. Plus, I’m a ’90s baby, so I grew up with the brand and clothes.

REAL TALK!

With Rebecca Minkoff

The industry’s finally embracing inclusivity, as your show demonstrates. It’s far overdue. People say, “Why aren’t you sustainable right away, or why aren’t you inclusive right away?” So much goes into those things. You have to make sure you can fund it. More people need to do it, and figure it out as quickly as possible. You were one of the first designers to truly embrace influencers. I remember we were shot down by heads of major department stores and editors, who said we were dirtying ourselves with D-list celebrities. You never forget those kinds of conversations. I’m proud I didn’t listen to them.

Time To Mobilize Danielle Licata, president of Coterie and East Coast Womenswear, Informa, gives us the inside scoop on the show’s new mobile app, what’s next for Coterie tech, and why she longs for her own digital detox. BY TANGIE SILVA Why is Coterie ramping up its digital integrations this season? Going digital means a few things, and right now it’s manifesting through our awesome new Coterie app! Part 1 of going digital is the process of replacing our current resources with updated, more robust electronic versions. It’s a smart move in terms of efficiency. With the app, we can upload unlimited information. If we’d always shared all our brands’ amazing content physically, everyone would be walking around with giant encyclopedias in their bags. Nobody wants that! Part 2 is the ability to take important next steps toward targeted marketing and matchmaking. How long has Coterie’s app been in the works? We’ve been working on it for the better part of a year; many people don’t know that it had a soft launch at our last show. Sherpa is helping our team build tools that are specific to our shows’ needs in the fashion B2B space. Our parent company, Informa, has helped us fast-track this process, and we know in the future it will create a platform that allows us to connect brands and buyers beyond the days of our physical show. How might the app change attendees’ experiences? This app has tools for everyone! We truly believe it’s going to revolutionize the way this community conducts business. Our future digital portals will allow brands and buyers to contribute as much information as they wish—and, in turn, these portals can help

with the discovery process. Brands can find potential clientele, and buyers will find the fashion newness their stores crave. Even buyers who aren’t attending the show, who are across the country and world, can access new brands, which is extremely exciting. While we’ll strengthen relationships with our current brands and buyers, we feel it’s an opportunity to draw in and form new ones as well. Tell us about the live wall feed that is inside the Coterie app. Everyone who downloads the app has access to “the wall,” allowing them to post and share pictures of favorite brands they’ve discovered, products within their own booths, and social moments happening on the floor. Unlike most forms of social media, this isn’t something the whole world can see—it’s an internal, Coterie app exclusive platform that’s great for sharing pictures you might not want to put on social media. We’re also continuing our live Instagram photo shoot on days 1 and 2, which we’ll post to both Instagram and the wall, so make sure you’re following us either inside or outside the app (or both)! That’s great considering the Javits Center can feel overwhelmingly huge. Well, we don’t plan to get smaller anytime soon—in fact, this edition is the largest in several seasons, because we have so many new categories and countries we want to expose buyers to. The app will

develop in a way where it can dissect a big marketplace to make it more intimate. It will do this by collecting data on both the brand and buyer side, allowing us to build profiles and market to retailers before and during the show, for the specific product and price point they are looking for. We plan to evolve it even further into a two-way encrypted communication device, which we know our brands would love to get their hands on. Any other tech-focused initiatives in the works? Right now, we’re mainly focused on building the app and adding important enhancements. Be on the lookout for push notifications; please keep them on. I know they can be overused by some companies, but I promise, we won’t bombard you! The few we do send out will be info you won’t want to miss, like when and where cocktails are happening, who’s in our seminar series, and updates on major installations or new focus areas. What are your thoughts on digital detoxes? Personally, I would love to try a digital detox, or even a silent retreat! But with two Coterie shows and four smaller East Coast sister shows, like most people in fashion, time is the issue. I do try to spend weekends off the phone and socializing with people in person, to balance all the digital time hiding behind my phone.

coterie Awards

The

Coterie Awards

The inaugural COTERIE Awards, powered by THE DAILY, are taking place on Sunday, September 15th, in the North Concourse of the Javits Center. The talented honorees span a diverse range of brands and retailers, and were selected by a group of industry insiders. Without further ado, meet the accomplished nominees!

reTailers COMPELLING SHOPPABLE CONTENT BY A RETAILER Lisa Bühler, Founder & CEO Reading recommendation: The Making of a Manager, by Julie Zhuo. With a growing team, this book has helped guide me to be a better leader. Dream brand ambassador: Solange Knowles. She’s a trailblazer. Latest news: We’re excited to expand our shoe category this season! Current moodboard: Prints, art, texture, and muted pastels. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Stella McCartney. She’s always been a fave for me.

OPENING CEREMONY Opening Ceremony has been the ultimate It boutique since 2002, when Carol Lim and Humberto Leon opened the first location in New York. It has since grown to include outposts around the world, a clothing line, and of course, e-commerce. Naturally, OC’s singular vision has extended to the Internet and the way it reaches its dedicated shoppers. Tapping in to how millennials and Gen Z use the Internet, it has been able to create wildly compelling shoppable content.

BLUEBIRD BOUTIQUE Sasha Martin, co-owner

Dream brand ambassador: Morgan Stewart. I love her simple style and use of great basics with fun, colored accessories. She’s never overdone. Latest news: Anything oversize. I’m loving boyfriend blazers, cardigans, and huge, printed puffers. Reading recommendations: A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle; and The Four Noble Truths of Love, by Susan Piver. Favorite fall pursuits: I love to walk, read, and drink wine.

OTTE

SHOPBOP

BOSSA CONCEPT

OTTE’s first location was in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg, in 1999, before the area became super hip, proving founder Kay Lee has a knack for being on the cutting edge of what’s cool. Now, shoppers enjoy Lee’s tasteful selections from three locations in Manhattan. With an impressive roster of chic brands, OTTE is a fashion destination for anyone looking to get ahead of the style curve.

In 2006, shortly after it launched, Shopbop was snatched up by Amazon, extending its reach across the globe. But the e-tailer was on the cutting edge of online fashion in a different way—by being one of the most Internet and social media-savvy companies out there. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, Shopbop is beloved and promoted by an army of influencers and their dedicated followings, making it an authority in the world of fashion.

A haven for Brazilian designer fashion nestled in Miami’s South Beach area, Bossa Concept was opened in 2016 by Alessandra Cavalcante and Flavia Schwenk, from Brazil and Argentina, respectively. Since opening, the chic shop expanded its inventory to include brands from a variety of South American and Central American countries, giving indie labels a unique stateside platform.

Latest news: I’m really excited to introduce Ann Demeulemeester, and we’re also adding Alanui. Dream brand ambassador: Reese Witherspoon. She really represents the women we’re serving. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Off-White is my favorite. We’re lucky enough to get to go! Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day: I think a creamy white instead of a stark white is a great way to bring white into your fall wardrobe.

Latest news: We’re always expanding our collection and seeking new inspiration. Constant curation is the best part of being multibrand. Right now, we love cozy knitwear, from chunky sweaters to oversize cardigans. Favorite fall pastime: Each fall, I look forward to our girls’ buying trip to Paris, where we curate our next season’s collection. Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day: It’s a year-round staple, and shouldn’t be limited to just the warmer, summer months. I love a white winter look.

BARBARA/JEAN

JILL ROBERTS

Barbara Baber and Jean Chaffin first opened the doors to their eponymous shop in 1972 in Arkansas. By 1985, Chaffin left the company and Baber’s daughter, Greer Grace, jumped in to help out. In 2001, the boutique’s senior buyer, Christine Bailey, shifted focus to European designers. She purchased the store from Greer in 2008. For more than two decades, Bailey has helped continue Barbara/Jean’s nearly 50-year legacy of style.

Reading recommendation: I’m just finishing The Island of Sea Women, by Lisa See, for my book club. Dream brand ambassador: Margot Robbie. She’s fresh, feminine, a natural beauty, Aussie beach girl, carefree, casual yet polished. She’d wear our clothes well! Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Azzedine Alaïa. I used to be the buyer for his store in Beverly Hills in the ’90s. I think he was a fashion genius. Now that he’s gone, I’m curious to see how the house of Alaïa will evolve.

TOOTSIES Tootsies is more than just a boutique—it’s a philanthropic endeavor. In 1975, founder Mickey Rosmarin launched the boutique with the goal of giving back to the community. Now, all three Tootsies locations (Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston) provide focused support to their respective communities.

Retail innovator of the year HOLT RENFREW

MODA OPERANDI

RENT THE RUNWAY

“Holt’s,” as it’s affectionately known among shoppers in Canada, is one of the oldest, most revered luxury retailers in the country, founded 1837. From classic houses like Chanel and Louis Vuitton to contemporary lines like Acne Studios and Opening Ceremony, customers adore walking out the door with their deep pink shopping bags. There have, of course, been modernizations. In addition to launching online shopping, the company has been curating a selection of socially responsible products since 2013.

Co-founder Lauren Santo Domingo has quite the fashion pedigree. She began her career at Vogue, is a fixture on Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list, and is a Proenza Schouler muse, among other chic things. Turning her talented eye to curating the season’s finest looks with Moda Operandi was a logical next step. The ultra-successful e-comm is the only place to preorder the season’s hottest looks right after they’ve debuted on the runway, for (almost) instant gratification.

Innovator of the year? Rent the Runway is arguably one of the biggest innovators of the decade, ushering in a new era of how we consume fashion. In just 10 years, the company has hit unicorn status, having earned a valuation of $1 billion and made luxuryclothing rental subscriptions a reality. They’ve democratized fashion and offer a sustainable new way to keep up with trends.

honoree: iconIC retailer of the year

Reading recommendation: Educated, by Tara Westover. It’s an autobiography, and it’s simply captivating to see how a child who grew up with so little became one of the most compelling, inspiring writers today. The book’s title says it all. Education, or perhaps the burning lifelong desire to learn, is the single most important equalizer of society. Dream brand ambassador: Yoyo Cao. Her minimalistic style reflects confidence and effortlessness. She’s a boss, mother, wife, creator, and designer who shapes the world around her and plays by her own rules. Favorite fall pasttime: Being able to use the fireplace again and cozy up on a daybed with a book…if my daughter will take a nap for once.

Coterie_AwardsSpread2_APPROVED.indd 1

Brooke Cundiff, founder and chief merchandising officer Dream brand ambassadors: Our customer is as bold as Lizzo, stylish like Aidy Bryant, as sophisticated as Octavia Spencer, rebellious as Rebel Wilson, and classic like Adele. Current moodboard: It’s covered with photos of jewel tone velvets, lace, sequins, and inspired by the ’70s and Studio 54 glam. We learned last season that our customer wanted to sparkle and shine for the holidays—we’re ready for her! Reading recommendation: I’m currently loving Dani Shapiro’s Inheritance. I also recently read Dreamland, by Sam Quinones, and Shoe Dog, by Phil Knight. This isn’t a book, but the podcast “How I Built It.” The stories are enlightening. I want to be on it one day!

JOAN SHEPP For more than four decades, Joan Shepp has been the leading fashion retailer in Philadelphia. Since founding her store in 1971, Shepp has established her boutique as a go-to for luxurious, forward-thinking designs from around the world. Her singular eye and sharp curation have not only enchanted Philly—where she herself is considered one of the city’s most stylish inhabitants—but have also garnered her attention from national publications, making her intimate shop a must-visit destination.

DebRA Polanco, co-founder and CCO Favorite thing about fall: I love layers with a great jacket. The season’s weather changes always bring new fashion life. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Chanel or Gucci. I love creative geniuses. Reading recommendation: I just picked up Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women to reread before the movie remake is released in December. Can’t wait! Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day: New world, new rules—that’s an urban legend. I love every shade of white year-round.

DEFINEME

Jennifer McKay Newton, CEO and creative director Dream brand ambassador: Emma Watson. She’s a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, rights, and equality. She’s very much in line with our core brand beliefs. Latest news: Our fragrance Ariel [inspired by The Little Mermaid] launches mid-October. Disney has been supportive in letting us take the lead on the design and scent itself, to create something quite unique. Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day: Why not? I’m a fan of darker shades of white, such as ivory. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: An Alexander McQueen show; I’m a great admirer of his creative genius.

Coterie_AwardsSpread2_APPROVED.indd 2

CURRENT/ELLIOTT James Miller, CEO, the Collected Group Dream brand ambassadors: Sienna Miller and Zoë Kravitz. Both capture the mood and spirit of the Current/Elliott girl, a high-maintenance tomboy at heart who isn’t trying too hard and expresses her femininity and sexiness with an unmistakable ease. Latest news: We’re reintroducing the boyfriend jean. It never really went away, but it’s the underpinning of where it all began for our DNA. Updating the fit and washes for 2020 has been an exciting challenge. We also continue to evolve vintage washes for our tees and wovens, and our jumpsuit and romper offerings.

DL1961 Zahra Ahmed, CEO Latest news: We’ve built out ready-to-wear that’s like an extension of denim essentials, with matching sets in the same mind-set as technical fabrics. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Chromat. Body inclusivity has been a big part of our mission, and seeing a brand like Chromat get it so right in an authentic and positive way is incredibly inspiring. Reading recommendation: I’m on a flight almost every week for work, so my Kindle is a travel essential. I started the summer reading My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by Ottessa Moshfegh, and have since been making my way through her other works. Her novels and short stories are all wildly different in plot, yet have this amazing way of describing life’s darker side.

MELISSA SHOES

Raquel Scherer, managing director This season’s inspiration: We had many things in mind when developing the new collection, like how a huge spectrum of colors affect our emotions and reveal memories and feelings. Melissa’s history has been built on the energy of colors, so it’s a look back at our essence. Latest news: We’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of Melissa this year, so we brought back some of our most iconic designs that were part of our history— silhouettes that still feel so fresh, plus contemporary details we’ve added for this comeback. Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day? Melissa is a brand that has embraced diversity in every sense of the word since its birth. Being true to yourself is the most important value for us, so if it feels authentic to you and brings you joy, why not?

INTERNATIONAL DESIGNER TO WATCH YUKIO

Fabio Yukio, founder Reading recommendation: Reading is an essential part for my design process. I get inspiration in the works of Perrault, Andersen, and the Grimm brothers. They’re very different stories than fairy tales. It’s exactly this contrast between the escapism and reality that really interests me. Playlist du jour: These four songs are definitely on our playlist—blue is our official color. “Blue Monday,” by New Order; “Blue Savannah,” by Erasure; “Pale Blue Eyes,” by the Velvet Underground; and “Blue Jeans,” by Lana del Rey. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: If I could turn back time, “Le Cirque,” from Thierry Mugler, 1995. It had a spectacular theatricality along with diversity and inclusion presented in a natural way. Nowadays, I’d like to see Loewe. I like the way Jonathan Anderson works with luxury in a not obvious way, using funny and unusual materials and shapes.

LUIZAS & CO.

Suzana Magalhães de Macambira, founder & designer

This season’s inspo: We’re thinking of classic yet modern sensibility, toughness in softness, and sustainability. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Raf Simons might be interesting. Favorite fall pastime: I enjoy traveling in search of new inspiration.

AZULU

Maya Memovic, head designer & creative director Latest news: We’re launching a fun array of everyday and vacation styles, introducing a large swimwear collection, and a strong group of beautiful dresses for summer weddings, beach cocktails, or a night out in the city. Inspired by the African roots of Colombian coastal culture, the collection pays homage to African savannahs, combining an earthy color palette and safari-inspired prints with fun and frilly Latin silhouettes. Reading recommendation: I love biographies and historical fiction. I just finished Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life, by Justine Picardie, which was fantastic. Also, I highly recommend any of the melancholic, surreal novels by Haruki Murakami.

Playlist du moment: Reality and Fantasy, by Raphael Gualazzi; “Atomic Bomb,” by William Onyeabor; and “Canopée,” by Polo & Pan. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Sacai, for its volume and fabric combinations; Acne Studios, for the brand’s ability to constantly renew itself and innovate; and Céline, for its elegance. Current moodboard: Color can definitely not be missed if you look at our moodboard. It’s part of the brand’s DNA. “Escape from reality” is the theme of the S/S ’20 collection, which prompted me to insert concepts into the moodboard that represent the dream, the fantasy, the imaginary world.

HONOREE: MUST-HAVE SPRING ’20 COLLECTION

LOVESHACKFANCY The ethereal brand was founded in 2013 by former fashion editor and vintage enthusiast Rebecca Hessel Cohen. For a brand with such a whimsical and romantic aesthetic, it is fitting that its origin story includes a wedding. Cohen, unable to find dresses for her bridesmaids, took it upon herself to find a patternmaker to create frocks for her fairy-tale ceremony. And thus, a label was born. LoveShackFancy is now carried in boutiques around the world, and even has its own location in the Hamptons.

RYZI

Luiza Mallmann, owner & designer Dream brand ambassador: Lady Gaga. She’s unexpected, never obvious, and makes a statement. I would love to have her help in the creative process as well. Current playlist: Post Malone, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish—and “Hallelujah,” by Oh Wonder, an upbeat, happy single I’m addicted to. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Either Comme des Garçons or Maison Margiela. Both brands’ creations are always so inspiring, and a surprise each and every time; a deconstruction of the obvious. Favorite fall pastime: Running outside. I also love that it’s never a heavy coat day or “I wish I was by the pool all day“ weather. It’s the best!

MUSEE

JuHyun Lee, director

Latest news: Our first resort collection has beautiful embroidery and swimsuits that match with kimonos, headbands, and turbans. Also our new bags were made on hand looms; they will surely amaze everyone. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Kate Spade, for the brand’s love of colors and feminine taste in every collections. I love Ulla Johnson’s work— and her personality. Her relationship with the family and her lifestyle are the things I most admire about her. Also, Valentino! I love the brand’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Latest news: We’re adding a male muse to the mix for Holiday. Current moodboard: My moodboard always has a lot of skin, no matter the season. This season is all about color for me. I’m inspired by the energy that comes from the gemstones in my crystal collection. Each one has a special energy that makes me feel so positive and happy. Playlist du moment: Right now, it’s DJ Khaled on repeat, all day long!

Sustainable practices is one of the core values of designer Hayley Menzies’ eponymous label. Menzies has been working in fashion since 2011, when she began selling vintage fashion and handmade recycled fur scarves at London’s Portobello Market. Fans dig the vintage-inspired aesthetic, but also its incredible quality, and the brand’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

Danielle Bernstein, founder

Michelle Coiro, sales director Latest news: This season, we’re thrilled to add sustainable sequins to the collection. It’s been a long time since we’ve shown embellishments, due to limitations with sustainability. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Giambattista Valli. I love the drama he brings to the runway, yet his designs feel effortless, timeless, and ageless. Favorite fall pastime: I love when it’s cool in the morning, warms up during the day, and then cools down at night so you need layers. And my favorite fall holiday is Halloween; I love to play dress up!

From swimwear to jewelry to home accessories, our goal is to extend our product’s life cycle. Dream brand ambassador: Björk. She’s avantgarde, eccentric, and dreamy. I can picture her wearing our Joni Kaftan with butterfly sleeves. Reading recommendation: Atlantean Secrets, by Samuel Sagan.

ELK Designed locally and ethically sourced, Australian label ELK has built a loyal following for its sleek designs. Founded in 2004 by married couple Marnie Goding and Adam Koniaras, the brand currently makes menswear, womenswear, jewelry, footwear, and accessories. But the team also prides itself on honesty by producing a transparency report annually, from measuring its footprint to disclosing its supply chain, for clothes that customers can feel good wearing.

ÉTICA DENIM

Michelle Marsh, director of sales & merchandising Latest news: Our Spring ’20 washes use hand-sanding and conditioning versus harsh chemicals. We even nailed a truly sustainable white wash, without bleach or caustic baking soda. For color, we experimented with botanical dyes—coffee, bougainvillea, chrysanthemum, and natural indigo. Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Stella McCartney. She’s always ahead of the curve, and she proves that art and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive.

Latest news: I’m introducing cover-ups into my WeWoreWhat Swim Holiday line. We’re calling them cover-ups, but they really can be worn during the day or at night as ready-to-wear pieces! Bucket list fashion show to sit front row: Chanel when Karl Lagerfeld was still alive would have been amazing to attend. Favorite fall pastimes: Fall means Sunday football, applepicking, and Halloween!

The duo’s collection is carried everywhere from Revolve to Nordstrom, and they have collaborated with Topshop in the past, too. The best way to keep up with all they do? The brand’s effortlessly cool Instagram account, which conveniently is also a great way to get a daily dose of all things Kendall, Kylie, and a ton of other influencers.

One of the first influencers that caught our attention in the early days of Instagram was the devilishly handsome Eric Rutherford, who now has 236K eyeballs following his every move. This year, he is the emcee of the Coterie Awards. Meet your dashing host! BY EDDIE ROCHE

You started modeling as a child. Details, please! I started acting when I was 11 years old, performing in local children’s theater along with my little brother. My mother wanted both of us to experience as much as we could, to shape us to be well-rounded individuals with a passion for people and life. To this day, I believe in trying new things, meeting new people, and being open to new experiences. This attitude led to us stepping in front of the camera. When I was 15 years old, a model scout discovered my little brother and me while we were riding our bikes around the neighborhood in Boca Raton, Florida. I was a gawky teenager with bad acne and even worse hair. Not sure what they saw at the time, but they believed in this “diamond in the rough.” You spent your twenties modeling… I did everything from catalogs to commercials with a range of brands. I wasn’t a great model or wildly gifted actor, but I worked enough, and enjoyed it. When I got accepted into USC’s BFA theater program at age 17, it was the first time I truly felt

talented and that I had something to offer that was special. And maybe I could make a career out of it. I left the industry in my early thirties when I began to doubt that talent and my self-worth. I was raised with a strong work ethic, and when you work hard, treat people with respect and kindness, you find success. In both the acting and modeling industry, this isn’t always true. What did you do professionally after you stopped modeling? I had started to work for a friend who ran an event company while I was still acting and modeling. Once I began to doubt it, I dove into the event business even more. I was a production assistant at the beginning, learning about all the different areas of producing a great event—from lighting to sound, design to catering. I loved creating something from nothing. It was incredible to watch an entire event experience emerge from a parking lot or dirt lot when a team of talented people came together. You also worked with Oprah Winfrey. What was that experience like? I had the privilege of working with her for about five years. I had built a good reputation in the industry and Colin Cowie, who was producing most of Ms. Winfrey’s events at the time, reached out to me to invite me to be a part of his team. It was one of the most rewarding times of my life. We worked on her Legends Ball and many other projects, but the one that impacted me the most was helping to open her girls’ school in South Africa. To be a part of a moment that was going to change young girls’ lives—as well as their families and village—was monumental, emotional, and inspiring. I’d never believed I had the capability to play such a role. I worked with the South African teams at the different event sites, helping and sharing new skills with them. At one point, the team got a standing ovation from Ms. Winfrey and all the guests. The team was moved to tears and hugged me. They were so proud of themselves and what they’d been able to achieve. I’ll never forget that moment. We were one of your early followers on Instagram! Why did you join initially? I joined because my event clients wanted social media to be a part of their projects, whether it was a movie premiere or a brand launch. I participated initially so I’d understand from an audience perspective. Plus, I’ve always been a storyteller, be it through acting, writing, or imagery. I never in a million years thought I’d end up here. You’re the king of comments. How do you do it? I love sharing and supporting with a comment. I make the time because I believe we are in a relationship with each other. If I follow you or you follow me, we are in this journey together. I am grateful for every like, comment, and share. I love engaging with people who follow me and whom I follow. I still get tickled when someone new follows or leaves a nice comment. Sam Smith just followed me, and I yelped with glee. I also love it when I “like” someone’s picture or make a sweet comment and they repost it. If I can make someone smile, all the effort is worth it. How do you avoid social media fatigue? Who says I don’t? Finding a balance, taking a pause, and stepping away from it even if it’s for an hour. But I also look at social media as a responsibility. If Beyoncé and Oprah can find the time, Mr. Rutherford certainly can. You’re not only an influencer; you’re a favorite among fashion insiders. What’s your relationship like with the industry? Why do you think we’ve adopted you? I love this industry. At its heart, it’s a wide swath of talented, wildly creative people who are deeply passionate about telling diverse stories through content. I’m grateful to have found great support and kindness when I returned to this world, from supporters like Edward [Enninful], Ivan [Bart], Sarah Candee, Rachel Johnson, The Daily Front Row, and many more. It’s meant the world to me. PR teams are some of the hardest-working people in the business. I have a deep appreciation for what they do, and a personal understanding of what it takes to do their job. Do you have any tips for those of us in pursuit of more followers? Gosh, this is the million-dollar question. Everyone has an opinion. I believe: Be yourself, not someone else. Find others like you who share your interests. Attend events and support people. Be consistent in your viewpoint, and also be willing to grow. It’s an ever-changing medium. And never forget that it’s not about the “likes,” but about loving yourself and what you do. What does your family think of your second-act success? More like third or fourth! They’re surprised by it and supportive of it. I don’t think my parents fully understand it, but they enjoy it. My mother still calls it “The Instagram.” To tell you the truth, I’m still surprised by it. What’s still on your bucket list? It’s a long list. One of my items is to finish a project I just started shooting and to get it on TV. It’s a passion project about overcoming the doors that get slammed in our face because of how we look, whom we love, and how labels don’t define us.

Kristen Turner

At FN Platform in Las Vegas, The Daily Front Row’s Eddie Roche moderated a panel about how brands can best work with influencers, called “I Sent a Blogger a Pair of Shoes… Now What? The Art of Influencer Collaborations,” with blogger and influencer Julia Lang, A Fashion Nerd’s Amy Roiland, and Carpe Creative Studios’ Kristen Turner. There was sage advice to brands about gifting: “Don’t send something blindly and be upset when an influencer doesn’t shoot or post it; there’s no guarantee they’ll connect to that piece,” per Turner. Another hot topic? Money. “There’s always room for negotiation, you just have to be cautious and smart about it,” Lang says for brands as they budget their influencer spending. “I’ve done campaigns from $1,000 to $15,000.” Roiland also noted the value proposition for companies working with talent like her: “A lot of brands ask me to shoot more pictures for them to use for their ads, Instagram, or website; it’s good bang for their buck,” she says. “If you hire a photographer, location, model, hair, and makeup, you’d spend so much more,” pointing out that using influencers or bloggers instead, “the ROI is huge for a brand.” Lots of thought-provoking intel to strengthen brand-influencer relationships.

Attendees browsed an assortment of resortwear, swimwear, accessories, and more.

In July, DESTINATIONmiami, powered by COTERIE, an immersive, multilevel showroomstyle experience, landed at Miami Swim Week. The goal? Giving contemporary and designer brands a fresh format for showcasing their latest collections. There was a particular focus on new international designers, resulting in a slew of carefully selected brands redefining the essence of the global travel lifestyle. DESTINATIONmiami’s senior events director Hillary Joseph aptly describes the unique event as a space where “emerging premium international brands can thrive, and where it’s much easier to support brands’ first steps.” Top-notch buyers perused a curated selection of lifestyle merchandise across various categories, from bikinis to baubles to chic shoes, discovering new designers from around the world in the process. “Our overall goal is to create meaningful and memorable moments that can help shape the way the industry moves forward,” Joseph says. It’s an innovative approach to how brands and buyers can connect, straight from Magic City.

Nicole Miller’s magical show at Spring Studios brought back a slew of stars to the runway. Claudia Mason, Veronica Webb, Patricia Velásquez, Pat Cleveland, and Frederique van der Wal showed off Miller’s dazzling Spring ’20 collection, while Carol Alt and Roshumba Williams sat front row alongside new faces like Joy Corrigan.

COLLECTION 411! With Nicole Miller

Why did you bring these icons back to the runway? I don’t understand why [models] retire so early. There used to be this thing where when a model turned 25, she’d have to retire. I looked back at these girls, and they were all in meaningful shows for me. Tell us about the collection. I call it “Lost and Found.” I went to Japan, where I hadn’t been in 20 years. It was familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. It segued to me going through my closets from the past 30 years because I was reorganizing the office. I found droves of all this stuff I didn’t know that was there. I went with my sustainability thing. I brought back Japan, archival stuff, and models.

GOING DEEP! With Pat Cleveland

What made you decide to return to the runway? I love Nicole Miller. We’ve known each other since the beginning, and she said I should come do the show. I just wanted to see her, and see what she was doing. She’s been on a long path. She’s done well for herself, and she’s still sweet and modest and nice and cute to look at. I don’t go out so much right now because I had a extreme operation and I’m in the middle of chemo, but this week was good.

all the feels!

With Frederique Van Der Wal What brought you back to the runway? I love Nicole Miller! She’s a survivor and a fantastic, powerful woman. When she said she was going to revisit this young and older runway, I said, “Wow!” When I heard that girls like Pat [Cleveland] and Patricia [Velásquez] were a part of it, I thought, “Great! Why not?” What are you working on these days? I’m doing a show for NewsWireFM digital TV called Life Cycles, where I go on my bike and interview New York characters. We talk to people about why they’re still in New York and their ups and downs. I’ve interviewed people like Griffin Dunne and Liev Schreiber.

SPEAKING UP! With Claudia Mason

firstview (7)

What made you want to do this show? It’s Nicole Miller! She was one of my favorite designers when I was doing this at the height of my career. She’s not only a fantastic creator, she’s a great person. She’s just so much fun. She wanted to bring back joy at the show. Were you nervous walking down the runway today? We all were. The kids [walking] thought we were cool, but we said we were nervous and they said, “We’re nervous, too!” The other side of nerves is excitement. Always remember that!

What’s new at Sole Commerce this season? Our Social Media Influencer Lounge! We’re excited to partner with The Daily on telling our brands’ stories, and to provide awareness about footwear at our events to both retailers and consumers. Footwear will play an active role in providing compelling content and celebrities to Coterie’s speaker series. We hear that there’s also a new mobile app… The app is the future. We tested it during MAGIC in August. Wayfinding, brand identification, event happenings, and the ability for brands, retailers, and the show to communicate with one another in real time was a game changer. It’s all at your fingertips! Footwear can be found on both floors of the show, too. At Sole Commerce, you’ll find fashion brands that retail for under $250, and Footwear @Coterie has fashion and designer names at $250 and up. Will there be any panels relating to footwear? Yes! Actress Ali MacGraw is launching her new footwear collection with Butter Shoes, and she will

be hitting the Concourse stage at 11 a.m. on Sunday to dish about the collection, her inspiration, and marketing to the fabulous over-50 generation! Ali is a true creative, innovator, and style icon. Her chat will be one not to miss. Any tips for Sole Commerce attendees? My most important tip for buyers is to have an open mind. Explore brands you may not have heard of. We travel the world to find retail-worthy, high-quality brands. Trends we’re seeing now for women are bright colors, kitten heels, sneakers, and booties. Exhibitors, make eye contact with buyers passing your booth. Say “hello” and “good day.” We all have e-mails to send,

but the show is the time to build relationships. Ensure your booth set-up is welcoming, and merchandise the booth as if you were the buyer. What would make you stop if you were shopping? Use props—like flowers—to bring a nice scent and splash of color to your booth. Make sure you’ve done your homework, by reaching out to retailers before the show. Provide a giveaway at your booth, and send an e-mail to your buyers inviting them to stop by for a free gift. Anything to drive the buyer to see you. Even a free pair of shoes! Are there any brands you’re especially interested in this season? Baldowski, Atlantic Stars, Fessura, Ramon Tenza, and

So many shoes! So much to tackle! The Daily tracked down Leslie Gallin, president of footwear at Informa Markets, Sole Commerce’s parent company, to get her genius insider tips for navigating the mammoth trade show.

“My most important tip for buyers is to have an open mind. explore brands you may not have heard of. we travel the world to find retail-worthy, high-quality brands.” Verbenas. But there are so many great brands at the show, it’s hard to select just a few! What can brands do to set themselves apart? Before the show, send personal printed or handwritten notes with images of your brand to retailers. Know the retailers you want to target, and work with our team before the show for matchmaking, PR, and marketing opportunities. Ensure that your booth is inviting—bowls of candy, giveaways. Actively promote your brand on social media. And less is more when it comes to how many shoes to show in your booth. How do you see brick-and-mortar stores heavily competing with online shoe shopping? Brick-and-mortar is a key part of the shopping experience. Retailers should look to carry different brands in their stores, not just the big brand names. Today, it’s about “the find.” People are looking for what they don’t already own. This speaks to why the offerings in your store need to be about the next, new fabulous brands you’ve found. You’re creating a new experience, and a must-visit perception. Retailers should look to partner with their brands, like hosting special promotions for one specific shoe style in-store, and perhaps a different style online. Shoppers still want to touch, feel, and have a personal experience when coming into a store. Online promotes convenience and price comparison options.

Truthfully, if done right, a retailer can do well today on both. It’s a fast pace, and that’s the scary part. Today, a brick-and-mortar retailer needs to be a party planner, a social influencer, and a community leader, and have a knack for discovering and displaying product, too. There’s been mention of imposed tariff increases. How should brands and buyers react to this? As they say, when you get lemons, make lemonade. If shoes from China will be costing more, perhaps retailers should be looking to the European brands, where quality is high and pricing is advantageous to the U.S. retailer. What are your go-to show shoes? Ha! Shoes I can walk the show in are top of mind. That means—oh, dare I say—comfortable shoes, like flats, mules, sneakers, and booties. How many steps do you think you take during the show? Miles. I walk miles! Any NYC recommendations for Coterie attendees? There’s a cool hideaway bar above Grand Central Station, The Campbell, that’s quiet and retro. It’s always a fun stop. What’s next for you after the show? Learning what we can do better for the next show and making it happen.

Dress Code Refresh While working at major tech companies in Silicon Valley, the host of Sole Commerce’s studio, Olivia Jeanette, started Corporate Catwalk, a personal style blog that proves you can indeed dress chicly in a corporate gig. This fall, she’s offering more than just her own #OOTDs as style inspo by launching subscription boxes filled with curated workwear. BY ALEXANDRA ILYASHOV You started Corporate Catwalk in 2012. Why did you launch the site initially, and how has it evolved since then? I launched the Corporate Catwalk blog as a way to share inspiration with my fellow women in corporate America. Dressing the part isn’t easy, particularly back then in Silicon Valley, so I paired my love of fashion with my career. It’s grown a great deal since then, and has taken on a much larger audience due to the different changes in our lives. When I moved to New York and had my son, Sebastian, Corporate Catwalk began to incorporate more lifestyle, beauty, and hair content to complement what we were doing on the fashion side as well.

How did you come up with the idea for Corporate Catwalk’s new subscription boxes? The concept for our subscription product originated early on, because I was getting so many questions and requests from my blog’s readers to help them style for work. This was before the subscription model was mainstream. I sat on the idea because we were focused on growing the blog and social media presence until early 2019—it was time to address this market and do it the right way. How does the process work, exactly? The Corporate Catwalk Box is a monthly subscription service. We send you a personalized box of workwear pieces and accessories for you to try on at home. Pay for what you want, and return what you don’t. The monthly styling fee is $30, and we always take care of shipping. Based on your answers to our styling quiz upon sign-up, our stylists will curate unique pieces and accessories for you and send you a box each month. You can adjust your sizing and preferences at any time. Why did a subscription box feel like the right format to expand your business into? The subscription model is quickly becoming a preferred shopping model and is continuing to expand. I personally subscribe to a number of subscription boxes. However, I didn’t like how “personalized” boxes didn’t feel personalized. I wanted to change that with our service. What will the box’s aesthetic be like? We are working with an amazing design firm, School House. We wanted something simple yet engaging, sustainable, that leaves you wanting to open the box again. The subscription box model has been widely utilized in multiple fields, from beauty to fashion to food, with lots of contenders in the fashion space alone. What makes Corporate Catwalk’s boxes distinct? Yes, there are a lot of contenders in the space, and standing out can seem daunting. But we are taking

the curated subscription model seriously. We want our stylists to truly know our customers and their needs. Feeling confident at work is paramount, and if we are able to give them that extra boost of confidence, then we have done our job. You worked in corporate America for many years. What was your work wardrobe like then? Initially, I fell in line with the prototypical suit—safe, classic, and tended to be boring. You didn’t want to stand out or take risks. However, my mind-set started to change, and I began to incorporate colors and patterns into my daily outfits. I loved the way that made me feel at work. I still love a classic custom suit, though. Just with some finer details now! What are your thoughts on “business casual”? What does it even mean in 2019? Business casual is such a wide category. I actually don’t know what it means, or what the boundaries are. It’s going to be different depending on the company, but I think in general, it means you are presentable, but they won’t put you in a board meeting with shareholders. I actually think it’s great, because you tend to have more options with outfits. However, that brings in the problem of overthinking your outfits, and [having] too many options or doubts. How can office dress codes impact how women feel, while getting dressed each morning and moving through their careers? Office dress codes have changed dramatically since I was in corporate. There’s not nearly the pressure— internal or otherwise—to dress a certain style, and the parameters have gotten much less strict, at least across fields like tech and media. There’s still a wide range of dress codes that exist, like business professional, business casual, and creative. Typically, you will fall within one of these categories, and that’s where our stylists come in to mesh your style, budget, and office environment with our subscription boxes.

What’s your fave thing about fall? The weather and the fashion, of course! It’s always more interesting and fun to dress for fall, isn’t it? My favorite fall holiday is definitely Thanksgiving, though it’s changed with age. It used to be Halloween. Any products you’re particularly excited about? The Adele Backpack. It can easily be converted into a crossbody, or worn as a backpack—so it’s super functional and versatile. A lot of our buyers are loving the functionality aspect. We’re still offering our best sellers, Le Pouch and Nolita, but putting a twist, quite literally, on the ring handles, with a great array of fun colors, metal twisted handles, and hammered rings, which add a lot of dimension.

Where do you find your inspiration? I’m lucky to live in multiple communities: Bali, New York, and Colorado. In each place, I have a great tribe of friends—designers, artists, entrepreneurs, and yoga teachers. I think of them all when I design. Anything new this season? We officially became 85 percent solarpowered in our design and production facilities. Knits powered by the Bali sun! What do you love about fall? Fall is absolutely my favorite time of year. I love everything from the perfectly chilly sweater weather to the pumpkin spice lattes. We designed a few sweaters in a warm spice color to pair perfectly with a hot drink.

Booth 6763

Lauren Grossman, owner & designer What’s on your moodboard this season? A 1970s-inspired crochet knit. I also have a new color palette throughout the collection that I have named Peanut. It’s a new neutral. Every Spring on my moodboard, I have lots of white on white, as well as white mixed with cream. What’s on your Coterie playlist? The Rolling Stones’ music. Classic rock is what we grew up with. On our playlist from the Stones would be “Start Me Up,” “Shattered,” which is a song about the clothing industry, and “Satisfaction.” The vibe we take through Coterie is upbeat and positive. That’s how we get in the mood and stay in the mood. That’s the way the “Planettes” roll—rock ’n’ roll. As Mick Jagger said, “It’s only rock ’n’ roll, but I like it!”

MAURITIUS Booth 7953

Lyn Baskett, CEO for North America What’s new this season? We’re becoming well known in the U.S. for our amazing, denim-friendly leather jackets, the perfect fashion additive! We’re starting to work with a Parisian designer who can offer a new perspective to capture the imagination of the 30-plus customer— the CEO who wants a power jacket or blazer for the boardroom. As we continue to grow, we’ll offer more feminine styles that people would never expect in leather, especially at our prices! Who’s your dream brand ambassador? For the women’s division, probably Taylor Swift. She’s a young, talented, multifaceted superstar. The other one would be Miley Cyrus. Somehow this girl has pushed all the limits and continues to develop her own brand. She is genuine and inspirational.

ARATTA Booth 8010

Susanna Karapetyan, designer How would you describe the brand’s overall style? Aratta’s look is very distinct, combining knit and woven materials with unique elements inspired by vintage design. What sets Aratta apart from other brands? The signature look and free spirit of Aratta is outstanding in the oversaturated world of fashion. Made for women by women, Aratta strives to create clothing that ignites both creativity and confidence. Any special details you’re adding this season? It’s a contemporary womenswear collection of extraordinarily striking items, including tops, jackets, and dresses. Driven by print and texture, Aratta incorporates handcrafted details, such as embroideries, crystals, and other unique embellishments that lend a one-of-a-kind look to every garment.

Aida De La Cruz, sales manager Tell us about the collection. Having been in business for a decade, XCVI has gone through an evolution to where the brand is today. As of 2020, we decided to launch XCVI Spring with a new fresh look that is much more appealing to more women across the globe. How do you ensure that XCVI’s designs appeal to a broad demographic around the world? Our main goal was to simplify our look, and keep it easy, yet still unique, and to attract all different types of customers. We achieved this by offering shapes and styles that are more wearable, not to mention how beautiful our colors are this season. We’ve also revised our prices to make them more affordable for customers.

VELVET HEART Booth 8022

Jordan Tsabag, Executive vice president Where does the brand find its inspiration? Velvet Heart’s design team travels all over the world for inspiration, from London to Tokyo to Milan. We do an incredible amount of homework studying the market to make sure we are bringing the right trends to all our customers at the right time. What’s new for Spring 2020? We’re introducing an array of knits, including lightweight sweaters, fashion knits, and a program of basic tees. The colors range from soft pastels to brights, like tie-dye, animal, and prints.

dana finegold, co-founder Who’s your dream brand ambassador? Reese Witherspoon. She’s been through a lot, yet you only get positivity from her. She’s successful, humble, and always striving to be better and help others. What’s your favorite thing about fall? Sweaters, of course! Cozy, soft fabrics to snuggle up in. I love to sit outside by a fire sipping wine with my girlfriends in the crisp fall air. Thoughts on wearing white after Labor Day? I used to be against it; I grew up in Atlanta, and the rules are pretty strict. Now, I wear white yearround in California with black, gray, and cream. I love white jeans, black boots, and a cute sweater. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

TAKING THE LEAD Meet Carolyn Glynos, the recently promoted president of French Connection USA. THE DAILY got the scoop on her long history with the brand—and what’s in store next! By Aria Darcella Congrats on your promotion! When did you begin working at French Connection? I started in 2003 as an account executive. I grew within sales until I oversaw that department, and later picked up retail, web, and marketing. I’m a salesperson at heart, always have been. I worked as an associate in a boutique for four years while I was a student at the University of Michigan, where I studied marketing. I truly love connecting with our partners and building a successful business together. What do you love about working for the brand? Everyone here is incredibly passionate about the brand and its success. It’s wonderful to come to work every day and be surrounded by a team that is so energetic and driven. French Connection is a beloved brand in the industry; most buyers and customers can recount a story of their first experience with the brand with affection. My mission every day is to keep this brand, and its strong heritage, relevant and discoverable. What else do you hope to accomplish in your new role? I just want to provoke change and encourage the team to think outside the box. That’s how ideas are born and brands push forward. Where that will take us is yet to evolve, but I’m excited to get there. You have to love the process to get the result. Why is it important for French Connection to participate in NYFW? French Connection means something personal and

SO FRESH French Connection Spring ’20

unique to each of our customers. NYFW allows us to present most purely the vision of our creative director, Maria Chen. Most people don’t know this about our brand, but we are completely design-driven. We try to uphold a distinct point of view in a crowded market. We have an atelier at our headquarters in London with the most amazing team of patternmakers. Their passion for the product is inspiring, and they work closely with Maria to bring each collection to life. NYFW is our opportunity to showcase their hard work and vision. Why is Coterie important for your brand? Coterie has always been an important marketplace for us to connect with buyers, and it’s now our biggest. The energy of launching a main season and having our important partners all in one place is infectious. [GM] Danielle [Licata] has done a great job to keep evolving the Coterie experience and valuing all of us who attend. What are some exciting new things French Connection is working on right now? FCUK is our passion project right now. We gifted classic FCUK sweatshirts at our first NYFW runway for Fall ’18. Our guests went nuts for them, and the demand became viral. Now we are working with select partners to bring it back and introduce it to a generation that has never seen it before; it hasn’t been widely released since the early ’00s. FCUK is all about self-expression, individuality, and pushing boundaries. The timing could not be more right.

RAMY’S RETAIL REVOLUTION

Why Madison Avenue? We opened our first store on Prince Street in Soho. It’s not a very big store, but we wanted to learn how to do retail. That’s why we originally opened downtown—to learn the systems, inventory, sales, everything. Now, we have big clients from the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side, and I always wanted to open a store on the UES. So about a year ago, we started looking, walking up and down Madison with a broker to see where we could open. It took us a little bit of time to find the right spot, and we finally did. It’s actually my dream spot—at 980 Madison. It became available, and we jumped on it. How is it designed? We’re keeping it true to our brand—orange and gold— and for the most part, the walls and floors are white. We have gold-leaf wallpaper, mannequins, and hanging racks throughout the store. We have large beautiful dressing rooms, and when you first walk in, there’ll be a place to hang out with a charging station. It’s friendly for people with kids or a woman who is shopping with her spouse, but he wants a place to sit and hang out. The whole store is geared toward being a shoppingfriendly experience for everybody they’re with. Between your office and your stores, how much are you traipsing around the city these days? Thank God for the Q! That changed my life, because I

live on the Upper East Side, and my office is on West 39th between Seventh and Eighth. So the majority of my time is spent in my office with my design, sales, and marketing teams. But on the weekends, I like to go down to Soho, and I would say a few times a week I run into Bloomingdale’s to check on that space as well. How many stores are you in at the moment? We’re in all the Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus locations, and all of Bloomingdale’s A stores, and some of their other select stores. We’re going to be carried in Nordstrom as well. They’re starting to carry us in some of their select stores, as well as online. And then we’re in more than 300 specialty stores around the country. Who are some of the most valuable people in your life who give you feedback about the collection? Who gives you great advice? I’ll start with my mother. I get so much feedback from my family. My mother is 79 and my daughter is 15; my sisters are somewhere in between. They’re the ones who I feel give me the most open and verbal advice— both good and bad. We all live different lifestyles, and all our needs are so different, so I listen to them. And then I have an incredible group of friends, and they’re all fashionable. They’re always sending me pictures, telling me what they liked, telling me what they don’t

like, what I should have done, and what I should do again. I’m not insulted if anyone’s critical. It’s really all learning for me. What are you feeling for Spring 2020? What I love about spring is that in my mind, it comes at a time when you really need some freshness, and I wanted something that is brighter and has a message that spring is ahead. We start to add a lot of color in Spring—it’s buy-now, wear-now. The fabrics start to become a little bit lighter and airier. We add more prints—stripes, flowers—to bring all those fun happy elements into the collection. In spring, I wear more dresses, and even maxi dresses. What’s the story with your denim launch? It’s really amazing; the fit is incredible, and they’re so comfortable. I will have new concepts that are sold only at the store, too—I want to test out some products that don’t necessarily make it to the floors of our wholesale accounts, but I know they could be successful, so I’m going to sell them here. Which denim styles are your personal favorites? The Cindy, which is mid to high rise—it’s tight on the leg but flares out. The reason I love it is because it can be worn as a nighttime jean. And then we developed another denim style called Kate, which is a low-waisted denim. For me, it’s difficult to find in the market.

California

Cool

For that breezy, laid-back L.A. vibe, look no further than Veronica M. The brand’s founder, Veronica Ferrer, explains how her deep affinity for sunny SoCal comes through in her bohemian designs.

When did you first start making clothes? When I was in junior high school, I would go to the local thrift and vintage shops to buy dresses and cut them up to wear to school. My mom was a patternmaker at the time, so I think that in itself inspired a lot of my own creativity. When I first started making clothing, I would make mini skirts from pieces of fabric that I purchased in Downtown L.A. I was specific about how I wanted them to fit and feel, and my mom’s guidance with patternmaking and sewing helped immensely—and saved me lots of money! Why is it crucial to you that every Veronica M piece is made in Los Angeles? I continue to believe in the importance of seeing the construction and quality of each garment as it’s being made. I stand behind the quality of each Veronica M garment for that reason and find importance in continuing to support and create jobs in L.A. What’s the biggest misconception about how Angelenos dress? The L.A. fashion scene is totally different from other fashion scenes. You’ll see trends, but then you will see each person style it in their own way. Especially with the weather in SoCal, from city to beach to mountains, we have the freedom to dress however we feel, yearround—shorts, sweaters, sundresses, you name it. There is no signature L.A. style.

How is Veronica M representative of California style? Cali style, or Los Angeles style, is effortless and easy to wear. Veronica M pieces are also effortless when it comes to the fit. I try not to include too many buttons or zippers, so the clothes aren’t too complicated to wear for the everyday, on-the-go woman. I’m wellknown for using lively, classic prints in fabrics that do not wrinkle. Thanks to our easy-care instructions, customers love to pack their Veronica M pieces to travel and take on vacation! What L.A. hot spots do we need to know about? Right now, my favorite place to eat is Tocaya Organica in Hollywood. The inside of their location is beautiful, and I’m obsessed with their bowls. For shopping, I always love checking out Atwater Village and Silver Lake, for lots of cute local boutiques. How have events like Coterie helped you reach buyers? It’s so important to meet our buyers and create a relationship with them. Creating a lasting relationship and meeting who is representing my brand is huge! Tell us about your site’s blog! I’m a huge believer in customer service and having an overall human voice. I’m offering a product that I believe in, and it’s important for me and my team to provide the communication link between our product,

who we are, how we can help, and also hear feedback. This blog features fun ways to style different pieces from the online exclusives. I hope ladies get inspired, and have fun reading it! How do you want your customers to feel when wearing Veronica M? Confident. For the longest time, women have been told that clothing length and sexiness in style have a limit at a certain age. But why can’t we have both? I hope my clothing inspires women to wear pieces that make them feel confident, sexy, and beautiful in their bodies, no matter what age. I create clothing that has the perfect length for our customers who may want to cover up a little here, or show a little there. Age should not limit our style! Are there any categories you want to expand into next? I would love to start a lifestyle-athleisure line. I love to work out and live an active life—I’m always go, go, go. On the days that I dress in athleisure, I tend to notice there are voids in my closet, so there are a few items I’d love to create myself. What can we expect from your latest collection? Prints, prints, prints! I’m loving our printed pantsuits and vintage-inspired blouses for winter. Plus, we’re introducing a new collection, Veronica M Resort Line, which I’m so excited about.

I DREAM OF GENIE Genie Parada-Fishman, owner and founder of Agent R.E.D. International, is returning to COTERIE with her roster of brands. Parada-Fishman has been hard at work behind the scenes at her agency since 2001. THE DAILY caught up with her to find out what she loves about Coterie, and how she’s managed to be so successful for almost 20 great years.

Tell us about your company! Why do you think you’re so trusted by your clients? Agent R.E.D. has been well known and respected in the industry for almost two decades for editing a diverse offering of brands that not only create and produce products of exceptional quality and design, they also somehow manage to do it at incredible prices, while being the ultimate partner to their retailers. That’s what it takes to be a part of the Agent R.E.D. world. What is your favorite quote about fashion? “Being dressed well is powerful.” How would you describe the role that fashion plays in your own life? Clothing is transforming. The ultimate excitement is to find a piece that you love that makes you feel good and empowers you to dress for any role in your multifaceted life. Every costume change brings about a new perspective and attitude. What are you reading these days? I’m currently engrossed in the biography of Elon Musk. He’s quite a fascinating guy, indeed. What drew you to his story? I am thoroughly inspired by insanely smart and successful people who relentlessly overcome the odds in the pursuit of their goals. Life has challenges at

every turn, and we can all use a great, positive story to change our perspective and give us fire to move onward and upward. How would you define COTERIE for the uninitiated? COTERIE is the ultimate celebration of the art of the garment. The show brings together the community of retailers and vendors who have the opportunity to exchange ideas about the future of fashion and plan the new season. What do you love most about COTERIE? It’s incredible to see the vision of each designer come together for a new season. The challenge is great to create and re-create desirable pieces, because fashion

is about desire, after all. No one really needs anything. We want. And it’s fine to want. What would life be if we didn’t desire anything? To live is to desire. It drives us. Inspires us. Motivates us. How would you describe the labels you represent? I’m extremely excited about our roster of brands. We have a well-edited and exciting group of designers. Any fresh names on your roster that we should keep an eye out for? Aratta is the newest member in our portfolio. What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever received? Don’t be a victim of any “rules” of fashion. Who wrote the rules anyway? Be true to your style and you will always look great.
