Ugly Girls make pretty music
SAC hosts winter events By Hannah Bailey

Williford, drummer Mac McCullar and their most recent addition Riley Condon. Williford, the primary songwriter for the band, said that his lyrics range from college fraternity life to smoking cigarettes. “A lot of the time I’m kind of purposely trying to be as cryptic as possible with my lyrics, and a lot of the time my songs are about
people I don’t like, which is kind of messed up,” Ethan Williford, freshman undeclared major at Rhodes College, said. Since September 2013, the group has been playing in basements and bars around the city, making a name for themselves in Memphis’ underground punk scene. McCullar, the band’s drummer,
describes the band’s genre as lo-fi surf punk and said they always try to make their performance as interesting as possible. “Our shows are always highenergy punk and in the future we’ll probably start wearing dresses and costumes,” McCullar, a sophomore film major at the University of
as the BAC returns to zero, the hangover leaves. Rico Hilger, freshman marketing major, had a terrible hangover experience over the summer before the fall semester of 2013 began. “All I could remember of the night I got a hangover is that I was at a club with a couple of friends celebrating school being out,” Hilger said. “The only thing that was able to jog my memory was a video of me that one of my friends recorded that night.” According to Hilger, he consumed vast amounts of liquor, specifically Ciroc vodka,
throughout the evening. At the time, Hilger did not know of any hangover cures except for sleeping as soon as his headache became terrible. Luckily, by the time morning came, his headache was gone. “Now I know that if I drink too much again, plenty of water and vegetables can help with a hangover,” he said. “Know that I will try and get another hangover so that I can test the two.” Every person is built somewhat differently, and, according to De Fouw, that can make a difference when it comes to alcohol intake.
“The heavier a person is, the more water is present in their body and so the alcohol will be more diluted,” she said. “However, if a man and woman who are the same size drink at the same rate, the woman will get more drunk, because men have more muscle cells, which hold more water and help dilute the alcohol.” Mallory Kreds has been a bartender at RP Tracks for three years. According to her, hangovers are sometimes dependent on what kind of beverage a per-
The Student Activities Committee is hosting Winterfest from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31 with an array of cold weather events. SAC committee members have been planning for the seasoned festival since November of last year and are eager for the fun to begin. “I am super excited because we all tried our best to bring interesting activities to the table that no one has ever seen before,” SAC University Traditions Chair Tiana Scott said. Festivities kick off Monday at 9 a.m. with Cocoa for Commuters and Iceless Ice Skating. Cocoa for Commuters will feature SAC members handing out free cocoa, apple cider and Dunkin’ Donuts Munchkins to passing students at three locations. Tables will be set up between Mitchell Hall and the Administration Building, on Central Avenue between the music and theatre buildings, and on Walker Avenue next to Ball Hall. A synthetic ice skating rink, a solid polymer material used with normal metal-bladed skates, will be set up in the University Center Student Plaza along with hot chocolate and cider from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. “Iceless ice skating is especially great for people who have never ice skated,” Scott said. In the event of rain or extreme cold weather, the ice rink will be placed in the UC River Room. A giant inflatable snow globe, complete with fake snow, will be a prop for students to climb inside and have their photo taken on Tuesday in the Iris Room from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Wednesday really gets fun with live karaoke,” Scott said. “Our entertainment chair Devin Gibbs will be preforming.” When asked to comment, Gibbs

Students test hangover cures
By Karlisha Hayes
news@dailyhelmsman.com For some University of Memphis college students, a night out drinking with friends can lead to a morning of headaches, bloodshot eyes and vomiting. Others, however, use home remedies to make their hangover symptoms disappear. According to University of Memphis health educator Jacqueline De Fouw, it generally takes an hour per drink for a person’s blood alcohol content to return to normal, and usually,

son decides to drink, as well as how many they decide to have. “Liquor that has a high sugar content is absorbed by the body quicker and can cause a person to become drunk quicker,” Kreds said. “Because of this, Long Island Ice Teas are the king of hangovers because of their high sugar content as well as the sweet and sour mix that is also included in the drink.” Water, Gatorade and Pedialyte are also good for hangovers because they help replace electrolytes that are lost. The three beverages also help rehydration since alcohol dehydrates the body. “If I could recommend an alcoholic beverage to college students that would not cause a hangover, I would just tell the students to drink in moderation and you will be all right,” Kreds said.

Individual Tigers garner conference honors By Corey Carmichael
sports@dailyhelmsman.com The University of Memphis track and field team started off the 2014 indoor season with a trip to Illinois to compete in the Illini Classic. Both the men and women’s teams took second to the University of Illinois, but two Tigers were recognized individually by the American Athletic Conference on Tuesday.
2:10.59 and earned 10 points for her performance in that event. The junior set a program record for the 800-meter run last year at the Conference USA Indoor Championships with a time of 2:08.71. Lynwood, a senior, placed second in the high jump with a mark of 2.08 meters. In last year’s indoor season, Lynwood took gold in the 2013 Conference USA high jump, clearing 2.11 meters.
The honors mark the first time that the Tigers have earned the athlete of the week distinction for track and field in the newly formed American Athletic Conference. Maya Williamson was named the Female Track Athlete of the Week and Georgio Lynwood earned the Male Field Athlete of the Week. Williamson won the women’s 800-meter run with a time of
Both athletes have set the bar high for the team, and are competing in late-season form already. The Tigers resume action on Friday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville. Southern Methodist University and the University of Louisville both plan to compete in Nashville, giving Memphis a chance to judge where they are in respect to other teams in their conference.

Memphis, said. “So far no show has been the same – always something random.” Conner Booth, bassist for the aggressive punkers Gimp Teeth, whose band frequently shares shows with Ugly Girls, said that the band always manages to put on a band-to-fan interactive show. “Ugly Girls shows are really wild. There are a lot of people moving,” Booth, sophomore anthropology major at the U of M, said. “I’ve even gotten hit in the face a couple of times by a few elbows at their shows.” McCullar said the band gives him a lot more free range to
explore while playing live and writing songs, describing the bands creative process as wild and free. “Ugly Girls is definitely more raw than other bands I’ve been in, which were mostly clean, alternative and had kind of boring stage presences about them,” McCullar said. The members of Ugly Girls hope to accomplish much more than just playing music for themselves through their shows. McCullar said they hope to help unite the Memphis punk-scene and once again make the city a hot spot of upcoming alternative musicians. “The scene in Memphis is a
bunch of dudes doing what they love by spreading the love of music around the city,” McCullar said. “Even with so many different sub-genres, we’re all on a mission to bring the scene back and put Memphis on the map again with punk music.” Booth, a veteran member of the underground Memphis scene, said that with a lot of friends and bands leaving the city, they have had a significant dent in show attendance. “We’ve always had a rotating group of bands in our scenes, but since a lot of people left for school it was hard to keep all of it together,” he said. “We lost a lot of our
group and regular attendees, but now the scene is branching out to a lot more people, which is awesome.” The Ugly Girls will begin recording their debut EP next week at the 5 and Dime Studio on Cooper Street. They also hope to tour this summer. “As a band, we’re still growing and still exploring on what we could potentially become,” Williford said. “We’re striving to evolve more – fine-tune our sound. My opinion of my bands is usually kind of negative, but it’s a good sign that I’m kind of hopeful about Ugly Girls.”

Fifth-year senior’s voice boosts Tigers By Hunter Field
sports@dailyhelmsman.com Spend an afternoon watching The University of Memphis men’s basketball team practice and one voice always stands out as it echoes off the history-laden rafters of the Larry O. Finch Center. There’s always head Memphis coach Josh Pastner’s voice screaming out instructions, but the much more baritone voice of senior forward David Pellom injects energy and excitement into the monotonous grind of the Tigers’ daily practices and workouts. “I’ve always been like that,” Pellom said with a bright smile on his face. “That’s just the way I play. I like to be the loudest guy in the gym.” Most Tiger fans would have had trouble distinguishing Pellom from an average Joe at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, except for his 6-foot-7, 224-pound frame. Pellom spent his first three years of NCAA eligibility at George Washington University. He played around 30 games all three seasons before injuring his wrist prior to his senior year. Rather than rushing back, Pellom decided to pursue a fifth year of eligibility, but it wouldn’t be for the Colonials. “When I first started trying to transfer I told my mom ‘I don’t think I should have done this’ because no one was calling me,” the fifth-year senior said. “Then five hours later, my phone would never stop ringing.” The calls were so frequent that Pellom’s high school coach began fielding calls to ease the load. He narrowed his list of prospective schools down to 10 then to five before settling on Drexel

Senior forward David Pellom transferred to Memphis from George Washington in the fall. He is averaging 5.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Tigers. University after a successful visit to the school located in Philadelphia. Pellom, who graduated from George Washington with a degree in sociology, said he was about to call head Drexel coach James Flint before the Tigers swooped in at the 11th hour. “Coach Ak (Memphis assistant coach Aki Collins) called and said to give Memphis a chance,” Pellom said. That’s when Pellom called former Tiger Wesley Witherspoon, who he knew through Witherspoon’s older brother who played at George Washington alongside Pellom. “He (Witherspoon) had nothing but good things to say about the
coaching staff, players and things like that, so I called coach Collins to tell him I would be interested,” Pellom said. “The next day coach Pastner flew up to D.C., and my mom drove up. We had a meeting at T.G.I. Friday’s in the middle of campus, and that was all she wrote.” Pellom’s mother fell in love with Pastner for the same reasons every mother does – he doesn’t curse or drink and his players have a near perfect academic record. The Wilmington, N.C., native was a perfect addition to a thin Memphis frontcourt. He added size and vocal leadership that was missing last season. Unfortunately for Pellom, he
hurt his knee a few days before the start of the season, undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. Miraculously, he missed only three games, contributing right away upon his return. Pellom likely would have been one of the two starting forwards barring his knee injury. “I wasn’t expecting to start this season,” freshman forward Austin Nichols said. “David (Pellom) was so good this summer. I just assumed he would start until he got hurt.” So far this season, Pellom has averaged 5.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 15.6 minutes per game, but the box score doesn’t account
for the charges taken, 50-50 balls won and turnovers forced by the forward. “David Pellom is just a solid player that has played really well for us,” Pastner said of Pellom, who leads the team in shooting at 74.5 percent from the field. He didn’t say Pellom was a superstar or even a great player. He said Pellom is a solid player, and solid players can often be the most important players. Perhaps Pellom’s biggest contributions have come through his leadership, but it wasn’t that way from the start. “When I first got here I considered myself a freshman,” Pellom said. “With it being my first year here I’m new to everyone else. Now, guys kind of look up to me. I’m the outspoken guy and looking to myself as the leader. Guys come up to me asking certain like how I feel when the coaches are down on me or stuff like that.” Pellom impacts the team on the court, but it’s no different off the court. After a tough practice in November when the team finished running wind sprints, most of the players were catching their breath while other practiced shooting, but Pellom was off to the side taking off all his gear – first his shoes then all his sweatbands. He signed and gave all of it to a group of kids, who came to watch practice with their youth basketball team. He represents just the latest in a long line of quality players and people Pastner has recruited to represent the U of M. He may not score the most or play the most, but Pellom’s impact goes beyond the box score. It’s bouncing off the walls and rafters in the Finch Center.
