With over 100 Registered Student Organizations on campus, the Student Involvement Fair packed the Alumni Mall with booths.

news@dailyhelmsman.com Behold — a simple equation for all Tigers — a new semester plus the University of Memphis equals a new start with new people. This ye ar’s Student Involvement Fair filled the front yard of the University Center with different groups and organizations. Students walked through

aisle after aisle of tables hosted by RSO leaders eager to explain their group and welcome new members. With over 100 campus RSOs, there are plenty of groups to choose from, but Tigers at the RSO Fair were on hand to help students on the fence about getting involved on campus. “Joining a student group is the best way to meet people,” said Zack Liley, president of the

Catholic Student Organization. Liley’s goal within his group is to make students feel comfortable at the U of M. The house for CSO is always open, and students are always welcome to go hang out there and join them for mass on Sundays, even those who do not consider themselves Catholic. “We just want to show students that this is home for them,” Liley said.

Another table encouraged students to join the Memphis River Warriors, a Mississippi River cleanup crew, which meets once a month for two hours to pick up trash along the river. They recycle what they can. Beside the Memphis River Warriors stood the Highland Hundred group, whose goal is to get more support for the Tiger

There are seven learning centers on the main grounds, one on the Lambuth campus and two additional centers for online students or commuters. “It’s for students who are highly motivated to be academically successful,” said Barbara Bekis, ESP’s head coordinator. Dennis Kouch is scheduled to graduate at the end of the fall 2013 semester, but he’s still making an effort to be beyond average. “I need to make an A in (Chemistry) class really badly,” Kouch, 24, said. “ESP provides better studying and generates

more understanding.” Last year, 19,000 students visited the various learning centers. Bekis, who has worked full time for the University since 1988, said new students don’t always have the best study habits. “I asked students at new student orientation how many hours they studied for courses in high school during a regular week without a test coming up,” she said. “What number do you think they said?” Most said zero. “This is why it is so important to

be a part of this program,” Bekis said. “It teaches students how to study, and it helps the transition into college life.” The program also helps students determine what type of tutoring would help them the most. Fredrika Crowley, a learning specialist, hosts weekly seminars about college preparation. “I think students need to take advantage of the resources provided,” Crowley said. “If they come early and often, we can stop the problem before

Tutoring improves students grades By Amber Williams

news@dailyhelmsman.com Making the transition from high school to college can be challenging. New students are surrounded by different buildings, introduced to strangers, and, perhaps the most stressful of all, thrown into a new curriculum. But the University of Memphis aims to ease that burden by offering academic assistance to all of its students. The Educational Support Program is free for any student enrolled in an undergraduateor graduate course.

Football season is right around the corner, and Tiger fans have even more to be excited about this year — a new student tailgating lot opening just off of Tiger Lane. Student groups can reserve a spot for the season or per game in the tailgating area, which is north of the Mid-South Coliseum just off of Early Maxwell Boulevard. There are 45 spots in the tailgating area, and it’s already filling up fast, according to Jessica Tatum, a Student Government Association executive cabinet member. “The new student lot this year is better than the one last year,” Tatum, a sophomore exercise science major, said. “We are closer to Tiger Lane and are able to make the community atmosphere.” It doesn’t cost anything to reserve a spot in the student tailgating lot and students get into Tiger football games for free with their ID card. Students can use the space to do just about anything in their tailgating lot, like play corn hole, eat their favorite game-day dishes and express their Tiger pride. Alcohol is allowed everywhere on the lot, except in the main SGA tent. Tatum said the goal is to get students off Tiger Lane and into their own space. Ricky Kirby Jr., SGA president, hopes that the student lot will move closer to Tiger Lane as each season passes. “We plan on letting student groups reserve spots in the tailgating village, and students who would like free parking will have to pick up passes at the (University Center) Information Desk starting Mondays before home games,” Kirby said. Several RSOs have reserved a spot in the new student lot, including the Highland Hundred, Delta
