Halloween

Courtney Clark | Herald Correspondent The Strangling Brothers is new this Halloween season. Located in Draper just off I-15, this haunted circus definitely plays up on the scary clown theme. The circus experience is completed with the addition of a spooky carnival. The rides include a scrambler and a fun house and for the younger kids a kiddie Ferris wheel and duck pond game. The costumed ride operators really get into their characters as well. Stop in before or after the main attraction and take a few rides or try your hand at the carnival game. Once you finish at the carnival, enter the huge circus tent complete with scary characters walking around to entertain you while you wait for the main show. Inside the tent there is music and movies playing to add to the fun-yet-scary circus theme. Once you enter the haunted circus, there is a maze of trailers that give you the feeling that you’re wandering an abandoned and haunted traveling circus train. The ups and downs of the many trailers make for unsure footing so be sure to keep a hold of that hand rail! The props are amazing; we couldn’t tell the real clowns from the fake ones! There are plenty of quite real scary clowns on hand but the Strangling Brothers have plenty of tricks up their sleeve to ensure everyone has a frightening good time. I saw children as young as 5 years old go through the circus but it may be too scary for some children, particularly children who are scared of clowns. By the sound of the teenagers all around us, I’d say they were having a fantastic time and getting just the scare they were expecting from a haunted circus. As you exit, there is a warm fire waiting for you to stop at and chat with fellow circus-goers and cast members. You can also return to the carnival for more rides and prizes. As we sat by the fire, it was hard to pick a favorite trailer of the many we wandered through but this may well be the greatest scare on earth!

A weekly series on everything autumn. Next Friday: Halloween Parties

As a longtime player in Utah’s Halloween scene, Nightmare on 13th has released zombies and mystical creatures on the patrons of the haunt; you’ll find them lurking in the deepest corners and leave a lasting impression on anyone who crosses their path. Our group of four arrived early so we were lucky enough to avoid the long lines. But don’t worry if you have a wait on your hands as there’s lots of entertainment going on as you make your way to the entrance. Once inside, we were led through dark hallways and rooms. Our favorite was the room full of curtains — the perfect hiding place for scary characters to pop out and scare!

Nightmare on 13th added 12 new frightening rooms to the haunt this year, including Blood Hall, Snake Creature Room, Torture Room, Dental School, Zombie Kid Room, Zombie Clown Midway and Shooting Gallery. It took us about 40 minutes to get through, and the concessions available at the end are the perfect way to cap off the evening. It’s a great activity for groups and families, but stick to older kids, over age 12.
