he Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce is delighted to present this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resource guide. The valley continues to be a central focal point for national attention and for successful business ventures. With a population of well over 500,000 people, the valley has become the home for some great new organizations.

The National Security Agency is in the process of building a 1.6 billion dollar facility in the north end of Utah County. The Adobe Corporation is nearing completion of its new 100 million dollar campus, which should bring 1,000 new jobs to the area. With a great new Utah County Convention Center scheduled to open this year and the rise of the Nu Skin International building in downtown Provo, things are happening in the valley. A newly announced LDS Temple is under way in the center of Provo, which will bring hundreds of new visitors to the area each day, while the new addition of Frontier Airlines service at the Provo Airport is a boost to tourism and the business community. The area has been recognized as the third Best Educated Workforce in the nation by the Brookings Institute and we now boast the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest four-year university, Utah Valley University, and one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest private universities, Brigham Young University. We have received accolades for being No. 1 in the nation for job gains by the Brookings Institute, No. 9 in the nation for being the best performing city by the Milken Institute, No. 2 in the nation for the Best Place for Business and Careers by Outfront Magazine, No. 5 by Forbes Magazine for being the Best Place to raise a family and the Best Midsized City in America by Bizjournal. n Utah Valley, some of the highest-valued attributes — like safety, entrepreneurial opportunities, top-notch education and high income levels, and a family-friendly environment — combine to form one of the nation’s most livable communities. Since the late 1980s, the Provo-Orem metro area has consistently ranked near the top of several lists detailing the best places to live, work or operate a company. It also has recently shot to the top of lists for entrepreneurs. Inc. magazine named it as a Boomtown for entrepreneurs in 2007, while Money Magazine ranked Orem in its top small cities in the United States to live and work in 2008. Utah Valley enjoys a moderate, four-season alpine climate with low humidity, warm summer days, refreshing summer nights and winters that offer a blend of snow, crystal clear days and chilly evenings. Even more attractive than the weather is Utah Valley’s solid, values-oriented culture. With excellent schools, peaceful

neighborhoods and a low crime rate, Utah Valley is a great place to raise a family. Orem, which calls itself “Family City USA,” was named the 12th safest city in America in 2005 by the Morgan Quitno Press, which analyzes FBI statistics to determine the safety levels of cities across the nation. Provo also enjoys a very low incidence of crime. Until the mid-19th century, Utah Valley was the home of the Ute Indians. Fur trappers hunting beaver passed through the valley in the early 1800s, including FrenchCanadian trapper Etienne Provost, the man for whom Provo is named. In 1849, Mormon pioneers established the permanent settlement that would become Provo. In the following years, towns sprouted all over the valley. Although agriculture dominated the valley’s economy for more than 100 years, Provo was home to the state’s first large manufacturing plant: The Provo Woolen Mills, built in 1873. Today, Utah Valley is a thriving, growing location that offers excellent opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship, while maintaining traditional values.

Utah Valley Regional Medical Center provides emergency and trauma services, 24-hour medical air transport, a 15-suite operating room and a cancer center, among other facilities. The hospital is home to a long-standing neurosurgery program and has offered open heart surgery in its heart center for more than 15 years. UVRMC is well known for its Women’s and Children’s Services. The hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit has been recognized by the Oxford Group for outstanding patient outcomes and for actively involving families in the care of their baby. In Orem, MountainStar Healthcare’s Timpanogos Regional Hospital offers another alternative. Included in its range of services, the hospital features a recently expanded Women’s Center, an open heart surgery center and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. TRH recently added a perinatology department to provide specialized care for expectant mothers who may have

complications during pregnancy. Timpanogos Regional Hospital was the first in the area to provide such services as the camera pill, the Brave pH Monometry and the Lumend Frontrunner, a cardiology procedure. Today, TRH is the only hospital in Utah to offer prostate brachytherapy. It also is Utah County’s only hospital with a 64-slice CT scanner. IHC’s Orem Community Hospital is a small (20-bed) facility focusing on outpatient procedures and women’s services. It is the only hospital in Utah County with one-room birthing suites, allowing women to remain in the same room for the entire childbirth experience. The hospital also features a strong same-day surgery program in addition to a pain center and Utah County’s only pediatric rehabilitation program, serving children who suffer from physical disabilities or disorders like cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. American Fork Hospital, also part of IHC, serves the north side of the county. It’s well-known Huntsman Intermountain Cancer Center offers radiation and chemotherapy. The hospital also features a Sleep Center and is focusing on expanding its heart services.

In Payson, MountainStar Healthcare’s Mountain View Hospital supports the medical needs of southern Utah County. Among its offerings are an Emergency Room, Women’s Services, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy and mental health services. Utah Valley Specialty Hospital opened in November 2006. The 40-bed hospital provides care for patients who require longer-term hospitalization (averaging 25 days or more). For special cases, the worldrenowned University of Utah Hospital, a pioneer and leader in the use of artificial hearts and other organ transplants, is only 45 minutes away from Utah Valley. Two of the most recognizable features in Utah Valley are large institutions of higher education — Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University. The international outreach of programs at BYU and UVU have helped place Utah Valley on the global map. Many countries worldwide are familiar with traveling performing groups from both of these schools. As one of the largest private universities in the United States, BYU seeks to develop students of intellect and character who have the skills and the desire to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives. BYU is a private university sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it draws a mix of students from different religious backgrounds and from all over the world. one of the leading private undergraduate universities in the West and offers a variety of advanced degrees. BYU has received national recognition for its law, engineering and business schools. The university also offers one of the nation’s leading distance education programs and hosts many forums and other events of interest to the local community. Aside from education programs, BYU’s performing arts groups provide a wide selection of performances each year. Originally a vocational school, Utah Valley University became official on July 1, 2008. It added a master’s degree in education, and a new state-of-the-art library. After 24 months of construction and three trips to the Utah State Legislature to secure funding, the library is open for campus and public use. The public can pay a yearly fee to check out books and media. In addition to continuing with its technical, trade and industrial programs as diverse as aviation science, diesel mechanics and telecommunications, UVU has traditional academic areas ranging from business and computer science to philosophy and physics. UVU also hosts many community programs, including community education

and the Small Business Development Center. Due to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rapid growth, it opened the Wasatch Campus in Heber City in 2003. In Orem, the Mountainland Applied Technology College provides vocational training both to high school students and adults. This school serves approximately 10,000 students annually through its certificate and associate degree programs. Part of the Utah System of Higher Education, MATC is one of several campuses that make up the Utah College of Applied Technology. Tuition is free for concurrently enrolled high school students, who are referred tot he college through their school counselor.

Watkins Awards 2011 The public service awards, an event of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, are named for Sen. Arthur V. Watkins and honor local business owners and community leaders. tah Valley is passionate about the arts. Lovers of culture enjoy hundreds of artistic exhibits, performances and events in the Provo-Orem metro area and throughout the surrounding valley. Many cities in the valley have an arts council or other organization devoted to promoting the arts in their communities and a wide variety of performance locations exist from intimate playhouses to large outdoor concert venues. Privately owned and communitysponsored theaters offer plays and musicals and the UCCU Events Center at Utah Valley University hosts major concert events. Just a few minutes’ drive up Provo Canyon, Sundance resort hosts abundant activities, events and classes year-round. The valley is home to two major art museums. Springville Museum of Art is Utah’s oldest museum for the visual fine arts. Its impressive collection, including more than 1,500 works of Utah and American art, is housed in an attractive Spanish Colonial Revival building completed in 1937. Its annual art shows include exhibits by talented Utah artists,

the annual Religious & Spiritual Art exhibition and the acclaimed Spring Salon. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, the Springville museum served as Utah Valley’s only official Cultural Olympiad venue. In Provo, the Brigham Young University Museum of Art offers a more modern ambience and temporary exhibits of a larger scope. Opened in October 1993, the museum holds a collection of more than 16,000 “objects” in a 100,000-square-foot building. It is one of the largest museum facilities in the Intermountain West. Utah Valley University’s Art Museum hosts student, faculty and guest exhibits that are available year-round. The museum is located at the University Mall. A number of cultural and history museum also are found throughout the valley as well as smaller art galleries. BYU and UVU both offer fine arts programs and create many opportunities for audiences to attend musicals, Shakespearean plays, dance performances and other arts events performed by talented students. In the summer, many communities produce major musical productions cast with local actors. Local orchestras and bands perform concerts throughout the year.

From rugged peaks and crystal-clear mountain rivers to the quiet serenity of Utah Lake and Deer Creek Reservoir, the majestic landscape affords hundreds of recreational opportunities. Bridal Veil Falls Four miles up Provo Canyon along US Highway 189, this double cataract waterfall plunges more than 607 feet and can be seen from the roadway. The falls are a favorite starting spot for summer biking and hiking trips into the canyon. In the winter, an icefall known as the Stairway to Heaven forms just to the right of the falls, attracting ice climbers from all over the world.

A natural wonder of crystal-clear springs cascading over limestone terraces, Cascade Springs is criss-crossed by raised boardwalks for easy access over streams filled with fish and aquatic plants. Accessible from the Alpine Loop or from the town of Midway via State Road 113.

Timpanogos Cave National Monument Man-made tunnels connect three spectacular caverns full of fascinating geologic formations. The trail to the cave offers outstanding views of the Wasatch mountains and Utah Valley. The cave and trail are open from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting. Hobble Creek Canyon Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park This former military post was home to America’s largest concentration of troops from 1858 to 1861, when 3,500 troops were sent to suppress the so-called “Mormon rebellion.” Of the camp’s many buildings, only a cemetery and commissary building remain. The nearby Stagecoach Inn, once an overnight stop on the historic overland stage and Pony Express route, has been restored with original period furnishings. Alpine Loop Scenic Byway One of Utah’s most popular scenic drives, State Road 92 winds for 24 miles around 11,700-foot Mount Timpanogos and offers spectacular views of the Timpanogos and Lone Peak wilderness areas. There are numerous picnicking, camping and hiking opportunities. Accessible from Provo and American Fork canyons, the road is open early summer through mid-autumn.

Just east of Springville, Hobble Creek Canyon offers a lesstraveled scenic route that leads to Strawberry Reservoir. Fish in Hobble Creek or take an off-road adventure (all-terrain vehicles only) on Camel’s Pass, which comes out into Provo Canyon. Open late spring tot mid-autumn. Also in Hobble Creek Canyon, Jolley’s Ranch is now open during the winter months for crosscountry skiing and tubing.

Nebo Loop Scenic Byway This 38-mile byway crosses the Uinta National Forest between the towns of Nephi and Payson. It climbs to more than 9,000 feet, offering breathtaking views of Utah Valley, the Wasatch mountains and 11,877-foot Mount Nebo, the tallest mountain in the Wasatch range.
