Lehi Mayor’s Message Welcome to the best week of the summer! Early pioneers settled in our area over 170 years ago, and that was the start of our very rich heritage. I hope you are looking forward to the Lehi Round-Up event as much as I am! The Lehi Round-Up is back and this year’s celebration promises to be a very exciting event-filled week. As always, highlighting the week will be our unique miniature float and livestock parades, our wide variety of fun-filled activities to enjoy and our famous Lehi RoundUp Rodeo! This celebration can only be provided through the great efforts of many local volunteers and organizations. We are always looking for citizens willing to help with the activities. If you are interested, please contact the city at (385) 201-1000.
We give great thanks to members of the Lehi Civic Improvement Association for their hard work and sponsorship of the rodeo. Without their efforts, this event could not take place. Everyone can find a fun activity to be involved in, so gather your family, invite your friends or just come by yourself to participate. Please take the time to review the schedule of activities and then block out that time on your calendars. Remember that tickets for the rodeo sell out quickly, so plan now to make that purchase. Tickets can be bought online at www.lehirodeo. com or in person at our own Macey’s or Kohler’s food stores. So, dust off your boots and grab your hat, and I will see you at Lehi City Round-Up. Lehi Mayor Mark Johnson

2021 Grand Marshal Stephen Holbrook
Stephen Holbrook has been named grand marshal for the 2021 Lehi Round-Up Grand Parade on Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. The parade begins at the northeast corner of Wines Park and travels south on 100 East, then west on 200 North to 200 West. The parade will turn south on 300 West and proceed to Main Street. The parade will turn onto Main Street and end at Lehi High School. Stephen and Gail Holbrook were married for 51 years and are the parents of 11 children and 36 grandchildren. Gail passed away in April 2019. She left a legacy of love and community service for her children and grandchildren. Steve grew up in Lehi and both he and Gail graduated from Lehi High School. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, graduating from Brigham Young University and marrying Gail, he returned to working on the family farm as a third-generation farmer at Holbrook Farms. Gail showed her support by being involved in the county and state fairs with her agricultural displays. His family has always been supportive of the Lehi Round-Up celebration from having their children in the parade to building floats. Gail spent countless hours fluffing pom-poms and sewing costumes for the parades. Steve has always participated in the Round-Up celebrations; as a young child he rode in the Lehi Silver Band miniature float and he later marched with the Lehi Marching Band in the parade. Steve served on the Lehi City Council for 12 years. Gail was his biggest supporter. You could always find her at Steve’s side serving and helping at city fundraisers and events. One of his assignments was overseeing the building of the Miss Lehi float and taking it to the parades in other cities. For 12 years, he was over the Lehi City Round-Up week including the parades, movie nights, city BBQ, Saturday activities, the family picnic and entertainment at the park, baby contest and sports activities. Many volunteers from Lehi gave of their time and effort to make this a big success. Steve oversaw the Rippy Literacy Center from its humble beginnings to the very successful program that it is today. He also worked with Lehi Arts and oversaw the remodeling of the current building on Center Street. He worked with the John Hutchings Museum to improve the displays and make the museum more educational for those who came to learn and enjoy it. While serving on the Library Board, he helped start fundraising activities that were very successful and are still going on at present. He also served on the Lehi Historical Society. The meetings were held at the old train station on State Street where many ways of preserving Lehi history were discussed and accomplished.
Stephen and Gail Holbrook
From his youth, Stephen Holbrook has been involved in the Lehi Round-Up celebration. Here he is shown riding in the Miniature Float Parade (he is the furthest child sitting to the right).
Steve worked with the veterans, and one of their major projects was to place flags throughout the community, especially on Main Street and in the cemetery. As a councilman, Steve worked with Lehi City to purchase the Mary Ann Judd collection of 250 paintings of Lehi historical sites. They are now on display throughout the city buildings. Steve was a volunteer manager of a church farm for 40 years. He served in multiple stake and ward callings, including two high councils and as the bishop of a BYU ward. He currently serves as a primary teacher. “I’m honored to be the grand marshal,” he said. “Lehi has been a great place to spend my entire life and participate in the traditions that make Lehi so great. Thank you citizens of Lehi for supporting the Lehi Round-Up week.”

2021 Lehi Round-Up Royalty The past year saw, for the first time in Lehi Round-Up history, the cancellation of the annual celebration and rodeo. This year, we are excited to celebrate again, and we kicked off this historical event with the Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Pageant on April 3 at the Lehi Rodeo Grounds. Five amazing contestants were judged on public speaking; Lehi Round-Up, rodeo and equestrian knowledge; personality; appearance; and horsemanship. At the end of the day, three beautiful and intelligent ladies were selected to represent Lehi and the sport of rodeo. During their reign, they will make appearances at rodeos, parades and other public events to provide information about the history of the rodeo, animal welfare, the City of Lehi and other Lehi Round-Up-related topics. McKinley Drake from St. George was crowned Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo 2021. She is the daughter of Chad and Natalie Drake. She has been involved in rodeo for many years and has held numerous rodeo queen titles, including Miss Utah High School Rodeo 2016-2017. She was first runner-up to Miss Rodeo Utah 2020. Drake recently graduated with honors from Dixie State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and marketing. She enjoys working out, swimming, reading, spending time with her two black labs and volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. Her future goals include competing at PRCA rodeos in the newly added breakaway roping event, continuing to represent rodeo and pursuing a career in marketing and mortgage lending. Lindsey Ivie of Benjamin will represent the 2021 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo as the first attendant. She is the daughter of Chris and Michelle Ivie. Ivie has had the honor of representing several rodeos as their queen, including rodeos during Pony Express Days and Spanish Fork Fiesta Days. She looks forward to utilizing her experiences to promote the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and serve the community. Ivie is currently attending Mountainland Technical College and plans to attend Utah State University this fall in pursuit of a degree in animal science. Her future goals are to own and manage a comprehensive equine rehabilitation center. She loves everything to do with the outdoors and is a huge hunting enthusiast. She also enjoys wood burning, leather work, sketching and welding. Savannah Ogden, the daughter of Bret and Laura Ogden, is the second attendant in the 2021 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Royalty. She is from Bluffdale. Ogden is a graduate of Riverton High School where she participated on the swim team and was also an active member of the 4-H program and high school rodeo association.
Members of the 2021 Lehi Round-Up Royalty are, from left: Savannah Ogden, second attendant; McKinley Drake, queen; and Lindsey Ivie, first attendant. Photo by Whitney Thomas Photography.
Ogden has won multiple titles, including Miss Utah State Fair & Rodeo and Miss Western Stampede. She is a graduate of Southern Utah University where she majored in marketing. In her spare time, Ogden has many interests, including reading, roping, hunting, fishing and water skiing. She also holds a black belt in Karate. The 2021 Lehi Round-Up Royalty invites you to “join the tradition” of the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo June 24-26, 2021.
8 LEHI ROUND-UP CELEBRATION 2021 | www.lehi-ut.gov/roundup
The Saga of the Rodeo Grounds By Dona Anderson Our Round-Up history would not be complete without the “Saga of the Rodeo Grounds.” This property has seen horse races, dancing, gymnastics, cow milking, baseball games, concerts, parades, horse pulling contests (with large sums of money wagered) and just about any social activity a typical Western community supports. In July of 1900, Lehi City purchased this property from John Beck. On July 19, some 225 workers turned out to clear the ground and build a dance floor. These enthusiastic volunteers erected a grandstand, built a fence on the northeast side of the property and leveled an area suitable for a baseball diamond. All was in readiness for the first program and parade at Lehi’s new City Park and an excited crowd gathered to celebrate Utah’s holiday, July 24. Then, on Aug. 2, 1900, many dancers eagerly set about getting work completed, including a cover over the floor, by the end of the month. The were concerned about a smoother surface on the dance floor because the rough paneling was hard on boots, shoes and, especially, feet. On Jan. 1, 1901, the Grand Sugar Ball was held in Lehi’s new “ballroom.” From then on, this location became the center of social life in Lehi. There was even a memorial service honoring the assassinated President McKinley on Sept. 19, 1901. Family reunions and parties honoring retiring bishoprics and some activities involving the “Doughboys” of World War I were staged there. In 1904, and through the efforts of Willis Whipple, a new maple floor replaced the original planking. By 1914, sport enthusiasts moved in with basketball and volleyball played in this “pavilion.” Gymnastic equipment (trapezes, horizontal bars and swinging rings) and even a wrestling mat were added. It became a popular setting for “Indoor
Used by permission, Utah State Historical Society
Baseball” games with nights reserved for both boys and girls. As popular and versatile as this pavilion became, its career was short-lived and additional plans for the site necessitated having it moved. In March of 1916, Lehi City offered the pavilion for sale. On March 6, 1919, it was torn down and materials used in the construction of our present Memorial Building. A “Wild West Show” was presented on June 30, 1921, in the temporary arena. This was followed by the first real rodeo in 1927. January of 1931 saw the formation of a great homecoming celebration to be called Utah Sugar Beet Days. Included in those plans was the enlarging of the rodeo arena and remodeling work necessary to accommodate the new sport and its spectators. In 1932, everyone decided that rodeo was here to stay and an investment of $25,000 was made in the purchase of chutes, vests and fencing. Later, additional chutes and bleachers were moved from the Evans’ Ranch west of Lehi. The 1940 Lehi Free Press report of the forthcoming rodeo stated, “Lehi’s rodeo grounds were inspected by official rodeo inspectors. They reported the grounds to be the best rodeo facility in the state with 3,000 seats in the shade.” A large stand of trees provided natural shade and fence along the west side of the property. Their cool, welcome shade attracted children, parade participants and baseball spectators and picnics. The trees have since been removed providing convenient working pens for rodeo stock and
the high wooden fence provided protection for the animals and is a great place to announce Round-Up dates each year. Lehi’s rodeo grounds are wellknown and appreciated by professional cowboys and stock contractors. The efficient manner in which the rodeo is conducted is also a trademark of the Round-Up. One year, Casey Tibbs, the world’s champion cowboy, was being featured at the Round-Up. He presented himself at the west gate where Robert Allred was stationed. Tibbs asked to be admitted. Mr. Allred asked for a ticket and because Casey didn’t have a ticket, he was refused admittance. So Casey asked Mr. Allred if he knew who he, Casey, was. Allred replied, “Not even the Lord could get in here without a ticket!” The next year when Mr. Allred attended the rodeo convention, the matter of requiring tickets for performers came up for discussion. Casey Tibbs quickly spoke up, saying, “In Lehi, Utah, the guy there wouldn’t even let the Lord in without a ticket.” The grounds are used by high school rodeo clubs, local riding clubs, F.F.A. stock shows, queen contests and team roping contests, and many individuals who need a place to exercise horses. In an ever-changing, fast-moving society, we are fortunate to have a place in our community as richly endowed with pioneer and Western heritage. We salute those hardy individuals who had the foresight and determination to provide this place where we can round up so many good times and memories.

Miniature Float Parade FRIDAY, JUNE 25
6 p.m. Parade begins at Wines Park Free
On July 24, 1854, Lehi held its first parade and patriotic celebration. It was a small parade held within the walls of the fort. In 1926, the parade consisted of children on decorated coaster wagons, tricycles and bicycles as well as children in pioneer costumes, all of whom simply paraded around the race track where the present rodeo arena is now located. These first floats were small and were usually constructed in recreation halls throughout Lehi. Decorations consisted of crepe paper with banners, flowers and ribbons. Float builders spent hours curling crepe paper to achieve the petal effect. Large quantities of chicken wire and paper napkins were used to create animals and cartoon characters. Later, plastic by the yard was used to make pom-poms of varying sizes, and commercial petal paper made float construction much easier. Highlighted on each float then and now are Lehi’s best product – imaginatively costumed children! We’ve come a long way since then. Each year, parade watchers are thrilled by the imagination and workmanship of the mini floats. As our city grows, bringing people and businesses from all over the country, it’s wonderful to join together to remember our humble beginnings and celebrate the many things that make Lehi such a great place to live.

The Brazilian men’s soccer team is known for attaining the highest levels of success, establishing a rich and storied legacy. Arguably, the pinnacle of that success came at the famed World Cup. Leading up to the 1966 World Cup, Brazil had won the two previous tournaments and placed in the top three several other times in the preceding tournaments. Brazil seemed unbeatable and was the hands-down favorite to win again. However, in 1966 everything changed. Brazil was eliminated in the first round and England went on to win the tournament; an unthinkable outcome for arguably the best team in the world. Brazil’s star player, Pele, had an abysmal performance and was notably frustrated. After the tournament, Pele went so far as to threaten to quit and never return. The team and Brazilian soccer fans were understandably worried. What would they do? How could they possibly recover from this? Just four years later at the 1970 World Cup, all eyes were on Brazil. How would its team fare against the rest of the world’s teams, who were now looking to keep Brazil from regaining the title? Taking courage, they regrouped with poise and grace and played incredibly well, winning the World Cup yet once again. Pele was even given the honor of being named MVP. The 1970 Brazilian team was exceptionally good. In fact, they are still regarded as one of the best teams to ever play the game. How did Brazil make this happen? After their crushing defeat at the previous World Cup, they realized that critical changes were desperately needed. They developed new, aggressive strategies and tactics, and they were also determined to play more as a unified, cohesive unit. They even examined the team’s leadership, opting to em-

brace a new clearly defined vision. In short, nothing was left to chance. The results of these changes are forever recorded in the annals of history. Brazil had come back stronger than ever before. Many of our valued business leaders and residents are no doubt still feeling the effects of a devastating loss during the past year due to the impact of COVID-19. But, just like the Brazilian soccer team, Utah also has a long, rich history of success and taking courage when times get rough. Being the Beehive State, we understand the value of hard work, innovation, solving problems, developing new strategies and working together cohesively to achieve worthy goals. I have no doubt that Utah will continue to be one of the best states when it comes to bouncing back from COVID-19. Our economy is still strong and growing stronger. Utah businesses are anxiously looking to fill job positions at all levels as they transition back to being fully open. I believe we will look back in a year and realize just how well Utah has done. And all of this will have been made possible one business at a time, having a clearly defined vision and leaving nothing to chance. Mark Welcker President & CEO

The Chamber Ambassador Committee is a group of chamber members who go the extra mile to welcome new chamber members, help current members become more engaged in chamber activities and honor businesses for their achievements. Committee members visit new chamber members and assist in events such as ribbon cuttings and grand openings. At chamber events, committee members greet all members and help them get to know each other. The committee is also responsible for selecting candidates to be considered for the chamber’s Business of the Month award. Those candidates are then voted on by the chamber membership, and the Ambassador Committee visits the selected winner and presents the business with a plaque and banner. For more information on joining the committee, contact the chamber office at 801-901-6664.

POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com
One of Utah County’s top business events of the year, the Utah County Business Summit was launched in 2014 with the intent of providing ongoing education about best business practices to local business professionals. It has since been held every year in the fall. The summit is a half-day event beginning in the morning and ending after lunch. Critical insights are discussed and shared during the morning, and attendees have the opportunity to network during lunch.
CHAMBER EVENTS & COMMITTEES Each year, the summit attracts a group of exceptional speakers with unique perspectives and business insights who inspire, direct and counsel their audience. Past speakers have included Utah Jazz CEO Greg Miller, former NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell, KSL Radio host Maria Shilaos, Overstock. com Chairman and former CEO Johnathan Johnson, and prominent entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of the hit TV show “The Secret of Skin Walker Ranch” Brandon Fugal. Businesses are also invited to showcase themselves as part of the summit’s vendor exhibition. This annual event was started by the Point of the Mountain Chamber, and, in the spirit of collaboration, the chamber decided to share the event with the other three chambers in northern Utah County. This has proven to be a great idea as the event is attended by professionals from throughout the region and county.
SARATOGA SPRINGS LUNCH & LEARN Sponsored by the Saratoga Springs Business Alliance The Saratoga Springs Business Alliance was created more than a decade ago and was the first of its kind in Utah County, providing educational and networking opportunities for business professionals. Fast forward 10 years later and the event is still going strong and has even inspired the formation of other similar business alliance groups in north Utah County. The SSBA meets quarterly at the Saratoga Springs City Office Building and other local business locations in Saratoga Springs to provide business professionals with opportunities to be taught and mentored in Best Business Practices while also providing an opportunity to network freely and effectively with each other. A delicious lunch is enjoyed while guest speakers educate and interact with the attendees.
CONNECT 4 LUNCH Connect 4 Lunch is a highly focused, multi-chamber, monthly networking event involving business professionals from throughout the northern Utah County area. Attendees network in groups of no more than six over lunch. These smaller group sizes allow business professionals of all types to get to know each other in a more meaningful way. Personal and professional experiences are shared and needs and ideas are discussed, all while a fantastic lunch is enjoyed. Those attending are invited to bring a door prize from their business to give away if they wish to receive extra recognition. Connect 4 Lunch is held on the third Thursday of every month at various area restaurants. The Point of the Mountain Chamber created this event many years ago to fulfill the need for a quality networking event in north Utah County. The chamber now shares Connect 4 Lunch with the other three chambers in north Utah County to make it an exceptional benefit and opportunity for business professionals throughout the region. GROWING BUSINESS Grant aids air quality sensor technology Residents in Utah and other states will have more information about the air they breathe thanks to a partnership between the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce, Utah Ignite and growing local company. Salt Lake City-based Tetrad Sensor Network Solutions is expanding its unique air quality sensor technology to three major cities outside of Utah through a grant from Utah Ignite and the Point of the Mountain Chamber. Utah Ignite is a chapter of US Ignite, a program of the National Science Foundation that encourages the growth of new technologies. A board made up of representatives of Utah Ignite and the Point of the Mountain Chamber reviews applications from organizations seeking grants to assist with their technology development. Tetrad applied for one of these grants, which was approved and finalized in the fall of 2020. Tetrad grew out of a project conducted by four faculty members at the University of Utah. Through the project, air quality sensors were developed that are low cost and can be networked together to create a comprehensive picture of air quality at a neighborhood scale. Because the sensors are low cost, it is easier for a city to place many of them around the community. Along with this hardware, however, the team developed software that evaluates the data while taking into consideration factors such as altitude, which can greatly affect air quality. It then presents the data in a more understandable way than the simple colored dots presented in other air quality software. Instead, Tetrad’s AirViewer presents the data in a way that looks more like a heat map, with a gradation of colors indicating exactly what type of air quality neighborhoods are experiencing. There is only a 15-minute delay in the data shown, meaning users can see an extraordinarily dynamic and accurate representation of the air quality in their area. “Our project was about developing a sensor network and then developing strategies for improving data quality and then helping people to interact with the data,” said Kerry Kelly, co-founder of Tetrad Sensor Network Solutions and an assistant professor of chemical engineering at the U of U. This original project was funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation and included work by Pierre Gaillardon, Tetrad’s other co-founder and a U of U associate professor of electrical engineering; Ross Whitaker, U of U professor of computer science; and Miriah Meyer, U of U associate professor of computer of computer science. “We thought we had a good twist on this where we were looking at both data quality and being able to put

out large networks of sensors and help people understand pollution at the neighborhood scale,” Kelly said. The team placed about 100 sensors throughout the Salt Lake Valley and learned that air quality is a lot worse in areas with lower elevation. Also, fireworks pollution tends to stay in the valley instead of traveling up to the benches. Eventually, the team was contacted by other U of U researchers who wanted to place the team’s technology inside the homes of asthmatic children. Around the same time, US Ignite approached the team and asked if they’d be interested in expanding the technology they’d placed in the Salt Lake Valley into other areas of the country. Tetrad was formed to fulfill these requests. Utilizing its recent grant from Utah Ignite and the chamber, Tetrad is working with three cities — Chattanooga, Tennessee; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cleveland, Ohio — to provide them with sensors and help them set up an air quality network in their areas. In order to see the Salt Lake City air quality map, visit tetradsensors.com. “I think our vision is every city is going to have their own map and their own app,” Kelly said. She believes air quality sensors will continue to get smaller and more affordable, perhaps to the point where people will wear them and track their own exposure to pollution. “I’m hoping this type of information is useful, especially when we get hit by wildfire smoke, to better predict where it might be going,” she said.

LEHI MAYOR’S MESSAGE One year ago, we had no idea the impact that COVID-19 would have on our personal and professional lives. On March 6, 2020, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert declared a State of Emergency, and in the coming weeks we saw businesses and restaurants close, schools transition to at-home learning and companies adapt to a virtual way of doing business. The adjustments we thought would only be in place for a few weeks lasted for months. We have experienced a lot in the last year. We have seen our neighbors reach out in support and compassion to those who have struggled with physical and emotional health issues. We have watched capable scientists work diligently to develop vaccines that have proven to be effective against the virus. We have witnessed the innovative spirit of small-business owners as they have found ways to provide services under unimaginable circumstances. Finally, we have learned the importance of a good broadband connection and how to find the unmute button during virtual meetings. Though some businesses have
34
suffered, Utah’s economy overall has remained strong. Surely, some in our business community will adapt to a hybrid office environment that allows employees to work from home. To support this, Lehi is in the process of developing a fiber network throughout our city. We plan to provide access to highspeed internet for all residents and businesses, making it possible for your employees to work from home when necessary. We are hopeful that we will be able to come out of this pandemic even stronger than before. Lehi City is committed to efficiently and affordably providing full services to our business community. We are proud to be a dedicated partner with the chamber and work to continue to provide the services that have made you successful in the past. Lehi is the strongest business community along the Wasatch Front and will continue to be the ideal location for the success of your business. Mark Johnson Lehi City Mayor
POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com
LEHI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE History books will tell the story of 2020 as the year of COVID-19 and the effect it had on local businesses. The Lehi business community was not immune to COVID-19. Service industries that have in-person contact or promote social interaction were hit the hardest, especially those in hospitality, dining, entertainment and amusement. Overall, Lehi City saw an increase in sales tax year over year for 2020, mostly driven by grocery and large retailer sales. Those service-based businesses who pivoted or re-invented themselves survived or grew. “Shop local” campaigns, installing a drivethrough window, providing home delivery service, updating websites and installing barriers per CDC guidelines became critical to helping a business succeed. Other businesses sent their employees home to work utilizing video conferencing. Shopping and ordering groceries online are now the new normal. As a government entity, our responsibility is to be a resource and facilitator for the business community. The city played an important role in helping Utah County disseminate funds through the Small Business COVID-19 Grant Program. We worked hand-in-hand with the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce to inform the business community about federal and state grant programs and utilized social media to implement a shop local campaign. As we look forward to 2021 and beyond, there are many opportunities for businesses. Lehi City has more than 5 million square feet of Class-A office space. A large portion of the businesses occupying this space still have the majority of their employees working from home. The question becomes: Will the business community bring back all their employees? If they don’t, do they still need as much space as they currently occupy? How soon can this space be backfilled if vacated? How will the space be reconfigured? These questions will reshape Class-A office space for the future. A lot of businesses are faced with implementing the 33/33/33 rule. About 33 percent of their employees will permanently work from home,
33 percent will work half-time in the office and the other half at home, and the last 33 percent will permanently work in the office. A concern most businesses had was productivity of their employee base. According to Forbes Magazine, a survey was done in conjunction with Microsoft and the Boston Consulting Group that showed employee productivity remained constant and, in some cases, increased. The main concern was a decrease in innovation. This was due to employees not knowing how to utilize video conferencing tools and a lack of collaboration from not being in an office setting. The study anticipates that employee productivity will stay steady and innovation will increase over time through education of tools. With fewer employees needed in the office, will this require smaller space? COVID-19 has forced businesses to spread employees out, discourage social gatherings in common areas and practice social distancing in meetings. Six feet is the new norm, so building space is going to have to be reconfigured. While employee numbers might drop in the office, space will grow to accommodate social distancing. We expect that Lehi will have more than 8 million square feet of Class-A office space completed at full buildout. The real estate community is anticipating about a year to backfill available lease space that comes
online due to COVID-19. However, developers are in a wait-and-see pattern. With higher vacancy rates, it doesn’t make sense to build additional lease space. We will see a new business norm emerge through 2021. I envision our robust economy will continue to grow, creating more jobs and demand for retail and housing. All economic indicators show the growth is healthy and controlled. The key to Lehi City’s success is indeed the secret sauce — placing emphasis on family, values and heritage. Lehi City is definitely “where it’s at.” Marlin Eldred Lehi Economic Development Director

UVU TO OPEN NEW LEHI CAMPUS AT THANKSGIVING POINT
Through the purchase of a Lehi building, Utah Valley University is bringing educational opportunities to the heart of the Silicon Slopes area. In May of 2020, UVU purchased the former Entrata building at 2912 Executive Parkway, Lehi. Prior to that time, UVU was renting half of the building’s first floor. Since the purchase, remodeling efforts have been underway inside the 103,000-square-foot building to create more flexible teaching and working spaces. Construction is now wrapping up and the new UVU Lehi Campus at Thanksgiving Point will have its formal opening this fall. “Lehi and north Utah County are, without question, great hubs of ideas, innovation, and growth,” said Astrid S. Tuminez, president of UVU. “Early in my tenure, I was very excited to learn about Silicon Slopes and the potential synergies between industry and academia. The UVU campus at Thanksgiving Point is a physical location that will facilitate these powerful synergies. As we forge closer partnerships with industry, I am confident that students, families, employers and Utah’s economy will be the clear beneficiaries.” UVU continues to grow, and this growth is evident in its various schools, programs and divisions. “Our vision for the division of Community Outreach and Economic Development 36
(COED) and UVU’s role in the region positions us well to lead in intentional efforts to be active contributors and partners to learners of all ages. The Thanksgiving Point campus, part of the COED portfolio, is strategically positioned to fuel educational, workforce and economic development in various fields,” said Belkis Torres-Capeles, associate provost for COED. “We partner with our faculty and industry leaders to offer best-inclass learning opportunities ensuring career and professional excellence.” UVU’s concurrent enrollment department as well as executive education and continuing education will be housed in the Lehi building, said Donna Milakovic, senior director of community outreach for UVU and project manager for the remodeling of the Lehi campus. The university will occupy the building’s first and fourth floors while renting out the building’s second and third floors to outside businesses. “In the past, we’ve had only a handful of faculty and facilitators that were there, but now we’re moving more employees to the northern Utah County area,” Milakovic said. “It will be an anchor for community education and executive education, which are noncredit business and community offerings, as well as credit classes and general education certificate courses.”
POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com
The campus will offer a mixture of executive education courses for professionals, credit courses for undergraduate students, and continuing education courses for the general public. There are also two master’s degree programs offered at the Lehi campus in cybersecurity and business administration. The MBA program has an optional track offering an emphasis in technology management. There will be a wider range of courses than ever before at the campus, and students at the nearby Mountainland Technical College will have the option of taking college credit courses at the UVU campus through a partnership between UVU and MTECH. “UVU has a focus on outreach in the area,” Milakovic said. “We have a focus on executive education and innovative learning spaces that matches the fast-growing economy of north Utah County.” The Lehi campus is located close to Interstate 15 and within walking distance of Lehi’s FrontRunner station, making it a convenient location for students. “We’re excited to be more closely participating in the energetic growth of Silicon Slopes and north Utah County,” Milakovic said. “UVU is really excited to be even more accessible to residents and businesses in that part of our service region.”
SARATOGA SPRINGS MAYOR’S MESSAGE Our beautiful mountain and lakefront community in the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to grow in a smart and proactive manner to balance residential growth, attract commercial businesses and provide enhanced public amenities and recreational programs. Construction of the city’s new Public Safety Building for police and court was completed at the start of 2020. This beautiful new facility sits directly adjacent to Patriot Park and is the first phase of a 26-acre municipal campus that will eventually include a new library, city hall and other amenities. With existing parks, Patriot Park, the municipal campus and land options, the city is looking at the potential for a 150-acre central park and municipal campus with the grandest views of Utah Lake and Mt. Timpanogos in the valley. During the last year, multiple transportation improvements in Saratoga Springs were also completed such as the widening of Redwood Road and the Continuous Flow Intersection at Redwood Road and Pioneer Crossing. Both of these projects have provided great relief to east-west congestion as well as north-south traffic through the City of Saratoga Springs. In addition to Redwood Road, the Utah Department of Transportation finished the Mountain View Corridor connection from SR-73 to 2100 North and I-15. This connection is the first phase of a multi-faceted interchange that will provide a whole new means of transportation to alleviate congestion through Saratoga Springs and provide a long-overdue alternate route to the bottleneck on I-15.
This growth is continuing to attract wonderful developments in our community such the new Lake Mountain Middle School, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and several exciting new commercial developments. Intermountain Healthcare will break ground on a medical campus at the corner of Pioneer Crossing and Crossroads Boulevard this fall. The initial phase of this exciting project will include a free-standing emergency room and a surgical center. Some of these commercial projects include continued development surrounding Costco and Smith’s Marketplace. These anchor projects spur the development of new businesses here. One of our goals is to make Saratoga Springs a great place to work and live. New commercial development has generated an increased outpouring of interest from a variety of other businesses that are excited to be in the City of Saratoga Springs. We look forward to welcoming these and many new businesses to our community as well as what the future brings for all of us. Mayor Jim Miller City of Saratoga Springs
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE Even in the midst of international impacts on the economy, the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to move forward strongly with commercial development, transportation improvements and residential growth. Saratoga Springs has been at the forefront of this residential growth year-over-year for the last 20 years, continually ranking in the top five along the entire Wasatch Front. The city’s current population is nearing 42,000 residents and growing far ahead of prior projections. This continued growth will translate into a 35 percent population increase over the next five years or 51,000 total residents. At this rate, Saratoga Springs’ population will nearly double in the next 10 years. As we progress forward, Saratoga Springs is working with commercial developers and brokers to tell our story and demonstrate the unique dynamic of our city and the surrounding region. Our ability to tell this story played a significant role in Costco’s completion last year and the development of the surrounding support retail. Olive Garden, Dutch Brothers and Apollo Burger, to name a few, will be part of our community soon. Since the announcement of Costco, a wide variety of businesses have reached out to the city and local developers about opening new locations in our area. These include everything from additional big-box stores and mid-box stores to fast-casual dining and sit-down restaurants, hotels, family entertainment, dance schools, medical services and more. Getting to these businesses is now easier than ever. Sara-
toga Springs’s commercial district is home to a new interchange for Utah’s western freeway system: the Mountain View Corridor. The first phase of this multi-faceted intersection connects several municipalities to Interstate 15, Bangerter Highway and Redwood Road. It provides multiple outlets to Salt Lake City and the hub of Silicon Slopes. This interchange is also located next to the future home of two new medical facilities from Utah’s top hospital systems. So, what does all of this growth mean for economic development in Saratoga Springs? It means more retailers and commercial developers are turning their eyes to Saratoga Springs. It means that we are proactively cultivating an incredible synergy that businesses are expanding and thriving on. Most importantly, it means that our residents will continue to find great places to work, go out to eat, have fun with their families and enjoy the amazing quality of life in our community. As we like to say in Saratoga Springs, “Life’s just better here!” Doug Meldrum Economic Development Director City of Saratoga Springs www.thepointchamber.com | POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER

BUILDING COMPANY Remembering the past while building the future A Lehi commercial construction company has recently used its expertise to help its hometown and a neighboring community prepare for the future while remembering the past. SIRQ Construction, located at 3900 N. Traverse Mountain Blvd. in Lehi, completed construction of the new Saratoga Springs Public Safety Building in the fall of 2019. It then followed up that project by constructing Lehi’s new Joseph D. Adams Public Safety Building, which was completed in the fall of 2020. While both buildings were designed to meet their communities’ need for emergency response for decades into the future, they will also stand as a tribute to the history and founders of Saratoga Springs and Lehi cities. The architecture of the Saratoga Springs Public Safety Building recalls the design of a former resort in the area that was built on the shore of Utah Lake utilizing natural hot springs. Visitors enjoyed swimming as well as midway rides and boating. The new Lehi Public Safety Building was constructed to resemble a downtown streetscape with multiple building facades, including a re-creation of the exterior of Broadbent’s General Store. The store closed in 2017 after being in business for 135 years. The city
38
POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com
purchased the property and determined it was a good location for a new police facility. The Broadbent building was determined to be structurally insufficient and was torn down along with some neighboring homes to make way for the new public safety building. However, the re-creation of the Broadbent building’s exterior in the new building’s architecture recalls its historical importance to the Lehi community. The public safety building also houses the Broadbent Community Room, which incorporates bricks from the original Broadbent building and will host police training, emergency operations and community events. Ryan Hunter, business development officer for SIRQ Construction, said his business does a lot of public construction projects, but creating something that serves the future while honoring the past is especially rewarding. “Both communities have seen tremendous growth since the days of the Saratoga resort and the Broadbent building, and yet their residents don’t want to lose those roots, and that’s what makes those communities so great,” Hunter said. “This desire to recognize those who made these communities what they are is to be commended.”
Think Architecture designed the Saratoga Springs Public Safety Building and Curtis Miner Architecture designed the Lehi Public Safety Building, Hunter said, adding that both firms did an amazing job. The Lehi building was named the Government/Public Building Project of the Year in 2020 by the Associated General Contractors of Utah as well as the Most Outstanding Public Project Over $10 Million in January 2021 by Utah Construction & Design. “I think everyone deep down wants to connect with their past,” said Brandon Burnett, a SIRQ project manager involved with the Lehi and Saratoga Springs projects. “I think it means more to the community as a whole when you’re paying tribute to the past.” The SIRQ team praised the Lehi and Saratoga Springs city councils, mayors and city staff who prioritized both honoring the past and building for the future. “These are inviting spaces for the community,” Hunter said. “The cities had long-term perspectives, which shows in the architecture of these buildings.” Other projects built by SIRQ Construction include the Utah Valley University Nellesen Center for Autism, the Star Mill Office Building in American Fork and the Mountainland Technical College Trades and Technology Building in Lehi.
