CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD MESSAGE As we reflect on 2020, we recall the many challenges our local businesses faced due to COVID-19. Many of us were forced to change tactics and make sacrifices. While business leaders typically look to opening doors for new customers or clients, some sadly found themselves shutting their doors instead. This pandemic continues to deeply affect our community, and our chamber has not been immune to it. We have had to cancel events or change the way we’ve traditionally done them. It has taken time to become accustomed to the new meaning of “business as usual.” This past year — more than any year prior — demonstrated how our business communities are stronger when they are willing to support one another. We saw businesses here finding unique ways to assist and lift up each other. We showed we cared by making sure we were there when our neighbors needed us. Specifically, the chamber of commerce board sought new ways to support our business community such as adapting our ways of communication and meeting together more often via technology.

8

Heading into 2021, with our eyes focused on the future, we decided as a chamber to update our chamber’s logo. During the design phase, we established that the new logo should embody the idea that the Spanish Fork-Salem area is where we choose to do business and help our community thrive. As part of the new logo, we have incorporated a map “pin drop.” This easyto-use feature found in most map applications allows users to share locations and coordinate activity. The chamber’s new logo uses the pin to symbolize our community’s passion to gather in a truly desirable location. We as a chamber stand committed and ready to assist businesses in our area in any way we can to help them succeed. We are planning activities and events that will continue to support our community and our businesses. We will find ways to safely adapt and take on the challenges that 2021 may present. We will continue to evaluate the way we do things to ensure each business receives a return on its investment in the chamber.

COMMUNITY GUIDE 2021 • WWW.SPANISHFORK-CHAMBER.COM

We want to involve all businesses within our community. As we grow, the opportunities in front of us are endless, and we welcome all input. If you have ideas for how we can better serve you, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am excited for 2021 and the opportunities it will bring. Jesse Cardon Chairman, Board of Directors Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce

CHAMBER ADOPTS NEW LOGO The Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has introduced a new logo that will now be used as the identifying symbol of the chamber. The logo was designed to resemble a “pin drop,” a method of marking a specific location in a map application. “We want to honor the tradition of the chamber and where it’s been while realizing that the future of the chamber is changing and the needs of our members are changing, and we want to be able to continue to moderize for the new developments and the new resources that businesses will need,” said Randi Kaufman, vice chair of the chamber’s board of directors and designer of the new logo. Pin drops help people find places or share locations with others. In this fashion, the new chamber logo emphasizes the Spanish Fork/Salem area is a place where people want to gather, shop, recreate and live. The new logo also incorporates mountain peaks, reflecting the scenic mountains surrounding Spanish Fork and Salem, as well as the landmark windmills located at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon.

SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT With the commitment to help our local youth achieve success, each year the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce teams up with the Spanish Fork Rotary Club to host a scholarship golf tournament. The event brings businesses and educators together in championing local students. The event is held at The Oaks at Spanish Fork, a scenic and beautiful golf course located at 2300 E. Powerhouse Road, Spanish Fork. Money raised through the tournament funds college scholarships of $1,500 per qualifying applicant, which helps defray economic barriers to higher education. Students interested in applying are encouraged to contact their school counselor. Businesses interested in investing in the future of our local students may visit spanishfork-chamber.com to learn more.

HARVEST MOON HURRAH Each September, the Spanish Fork Arts Council sponsors the city’s Harvest Moon Hurrah, an event celebrating the harvest season and the arts. Held in Spanish Fork’s Library Park at Center and Main streets, the Harvest Moon Hurrah includes harvest-related games, crafts and activities as well as live music performances. As part of the Harvest Moon Hurrah, a local farmer donates 500 pumpkins and the chamber of commerce purchases craft items that children can use to decorate the pumpkins as jack-o-lanterns. ANNUAL CHAMBER-SPONSORED EVENTS SCARECROW CONTEST TRICK OR TREAT ON MAIN & NOT ON MAIN ST. Our annual Scarecrow contest invites businesses and individuals alike to welcome in the fall season with creativity and fun. Each October, you can find the most innovative, humorous and inspiring scarecrows as you walk down Spanish Fork’s historic downtown Main Street between 400 North and Center. The chamber has also sponsored the Trick or Treat on Main Street event and hosted the Trick or Treat Not on Main. Trick or Treat on Main is a fun-filled walk for children down Historic Main Street where businesses hand out candy. This costume walk beats all others hands down. Trick or Treat Not on Main is a drive-through event where businesses decorate their booths and hand out candy to costumed children as they drive by. These events bring businesses and the community together and are filled with enormous amounts of candy, Halloween costumes and fun for all. For up-to-date event information, visit spanishforkchamber.com.

SOUTH COUNTY BUSINESSS SUMMIT Once a year, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the South County Business Summit along with the Springville-Mapleton and Payson-Santaquin chambers. Open to chamber members and nonmembers, the summit has featured regionally and nationally known speakers addressing topics important to businesses such as communication, training and social media marketing. The summit also provides time for those attending to network, connect and collaborate with other business leaders. For more information, visit spanishfork-chamber. com.

WINTER LIGHTS PARADE On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year, Main Street in Spanish Fork is lit up with festive floats and wagons as part of the Winter Lights Parade, an event sponsored by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Businesses, families and other groups participate in the parade each year with the parade attracting entries such as hay wagons, city floats, horse riding clubs and marching bands. Musical groups also participate, including Christmas carolers, and the parade ends with a visit from Santa Claus who rides through the city on his sleigh. After the parade, there is a tree-lighting ceremony held at the city building and Santa is available to visit and take pictures with the children. Keeping the spirit of the season going all month long, local businesses highlight their talents by lighting up the community with festive light displays at business locations throughout the Spanish Fork/Salem areas. CHAMBER EXPANDING SOCIAL MEDIA EFFORTS In today’s world, social media is an indispensable part of building a brand and attracting attention, and the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is eager to utilize this medium to its fullest potential for both itself and its members. “We want to build our social media platform even further, providing more ways for the chamber to advertise itself and also more ways for our member businesses to advertise themselves,”

said Randi Kaufman, vice chair of the chamber’s board of directors and leader of the chamber’s marketing team.

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE CONTENT

The chamber is currently on Facebook and Instagram, where it puts up a few posts a week. The ultimate goal is to post every day, and the chamber is working to determine what kinds of information and content would be most

useful to its followers and member businesses. “We love sharing our members’ activities or anything special going on,” Kaufman said, “so if they tag us on any of their social media, we turn around and share that on our platform.” The chamber currently has about 12,000 followers on Instagram. “It would be great to double that by the end of the year,” Kaufman said. Individuals who follow the chamber on social media receive notifications of monthly contests and giveaways the chamber conducts via social media. The public can also learn about various local events and celebrations through the chamber’s social media. The chamber sponsors and assists with many civic events, including the annual city Easter egg hunt, the Winter Lights Parade and the Main Street Trick-orTreat event.

RECEIVE COUPONS THROUGH THE CHAMBER

There are currently opportunities for chamber members to use the chamber’s social media as a marketing tool. For example, chamber members can submit a coupon from their business to the chamber and have the coupon sent out with a weekly email. The public can sign up to receive these coupons by going to spanishfork-chamber.com/coupons.html. Kaufman said there are currently about 500 people on the email list, and the chamber would love to have more sign up to receive these offers. Those who can’t attend a chamber training or event can view it on the chamber’s YouTube channel, where videos of chamber activities such as educational events, board meetings, ribbon cuttings for new businesses and Business of the Month celebrations.

JOIN CHAMBER’S BUSINESS SERIES ONLINE When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, members of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce struggled to find a way to continue operating and collaborating together. “Because we couldn’t meet together as businesses the same way we used to, we came up with the idea of doing a business series with topics such as the changing environment due to COVID,” said Jesse Cardon, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors. “We would invite different people to come and speak to the chamber and do it through a Zoom meeting where everybody could participate whether they were a chamber member or not and hopefully give back to the community that way.” Last summer, the chamber began offering its Business Series, an online series of meetings via Zoom that features experts speaking about a vast array of topics. These meetings are currently

held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and last between 30 and 60 minutes. At first, the meetings were held every week as there was nothing else happening during that time period. The first meetings also centered on COVID-19 response, protocols and other topics related to the pandemic. “Especially at the first of the pandemic, it helped people to get information quickly and be able to ask questions,” Cardon said.

The Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Series meetings occur every second and fourth Wednesday at noon via Zoom. These meetings are open to both chamber members and nonmembers. To join these meetings, visit the chamber’s calendar at spanishforkchamber.com.

A BROAD RANGE OF TOPICS

Over time, the topics have become more broadly business oriented, and the frequency of the meetings reduced to twice a month. Topics are now selected based on three categories. On the second Wednesday, the meeting’s theme is Business Today and topics center on happenings in today’s business world. The fourth Wednesday’s meeting alternates between two categories: Marketing and Leadership/Culture. All are invited to attend these meetings. To do so, check the chamber’s calendar at spanishforkchamber.com. For those who wish to view past meetings, recordings of Business Series events can be viewed on the chamber’s YouTube page.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION AWARD SYDNEY WARD Sydney Ward, a graduate of Salem Hills High School and current Brigham Young University student, was chosen to receive the chamber’s Legislative Action Award. Ward was selected to serve as one of two State Honorees from Utah in the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. This program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. On the day before Election Day in 2016, Ward, with the help of her history teacher, organized a mock election at her school that drew participation from 75 percent of the student body. The ensuing conversations fueled her desire to do more. In 2019, she founded Project 320 to encourage young people to get involved in the political process. As executive director, Sydney has spent many hours planning social media campaigns, posting candidate platforms on a website, coordinating events with local officials, recruiting volunteers, writing grant applications and securing support from the community. To increase young people’s awareness of governmental issues and the political process, her group has hosted a series of town hall meetings to bring students and elected officials together.

COMMUNITY ACTION AWARD SPANISH FORK CITY & SALEM CITY The Community Action Award honors the partnerships and organizations that leverage their resources, expertise and talent to make a positive impact in the community. The year 2020 challenged the businesses in our community, and Spanish Fork City leveraged resources to provide a COVID-19 business relief program designed to provide essential cleaning and protective supplies to businesses. Both Spanish Fork and Salem conducted a Shop Local initiative that stimulated the local economy.

2020 BUSINESS OF THE YEAR J-MART PUBLISHING A fixture on Spanish Fork’s Main Street for nearly 60 years, J-Mart Publishing Company has been named the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Business of the Year. “It’s a great honor. It’s nice to be recognized, and we try to do what we can to help people fulfill what they need,” said Lane Henderson, owner of J-Mart.

HISTORY OF A HOMETOWN BUSINESS

Henderson’s parents, JC and Maureen Henderson, purchased the small business they would name J-Mart Publishing Company in 1962. “J” stood for JC and “Mart” was JC’s nickname for his wife. Together they built a printing business centered on their weekly publication of the Spanish Fork Press newspaper and the printing of other weekly newspapers including the Payson Chronicle, Nephi Times-News, Springville Herald, Castle Valley News, Salina Sun, Gunnison Valley News and The Sun Advocate as well as the Daily Herald and Brigham Young University’s Daily Universe. They also printed various shoppers and periodicals. “The business at first was based on offset printing and newspaper publishing,” Henderson said. Henderson bought the printing company in 1982, and his father sold the Spanish Fork Press to someone else. In 1984, Henderson purchased the newspaper back; he then ran the Press until 2001 when he was called to serve as president of the Italy Milan Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At that time, he sold the Press to the Daily Herald.

ENTERING THE MODERN AGE

28

When Henderson returned home, J-Mart Publishing was still operating, although on a limited basis. His father and mother were running it, but his father had become ill and unable to work. Henderson resumed his role as leader of the company and began expanding its offerings using the latest products and technologies while his wife Leslie oversaw a complete building remodel to facilitate the new technology. “When I got home, that’s when we got into digital printing. I’ve stayed current on every innovation on digital printing. I do a lot of printing for other printing companies and other outlets because of that,” Henderson said. “Plus, we’ve never lost our client base of just Spanish Fork people, Spanish Fork and Salem.” J-Mart has maintained its copy shop for customers but also added new offerings such as vinyl signs, vehicle graphics, car wraps, life-size cutouts and fine art photo, metal and giclee prints. It can also create business cards, letterhead, brochures, flyers, catalogs, posters, invitations and special event cards. J-Mart even offers custom embroidery. The business’s graphic design department can assist customers in creating the perfect item. “We emphasize service and customer satisfaction,” Henderson said. Within the next two to three years, J-Mart is looking to add the ability to create embellishments on its products such as spot UV coating and silver foil. PART OF THE COMMUNITY

Being a strong part of the community is important to Henderson, who served as mayor of Salem as well as president of the Spanish Fork-Salem chamber, the Mt. Loafer Kiwanis Club and the Utah Press Association. He was also named Spanish Fork High School’s Booster of the Year. Keeping his business downtown — as well as helping bring other businesses down-

town — has also been a priority. “My philosophy has always been to maintain something downtown,” he said. Henderson built the Main Street Plaza located just north of J-Mart’s building and owned the building next to J-Mart before selling it to My Sister’s Closet. He also enjoys the personal interactions that go along with being a small business on the town’s Main Street. While running the Spanish Fork Press, Henderson said he came to know many people in town; today, he works at the front counter each Saturday so he can still interact with customers both old and new. “I have people that walk in and say, ‘I got my wedding invi-

When COVID-19 hit, his business slowed as weddings and other events were canceled, but it soon picked up to the point where business was better than before the pandemic. “I think people have a genuine concern to support small business,” he said. “I think if you lose that small-business feel of the community, you never regain it. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

PROGRAMS PROVIDE COVID-19 AID When $3 million in federal money was made available to Spanish Fork City to help ease the negative effects of COVID-19, city officials wanted to use the funds to help both businesses and residents. They accomplished their goal through setting up two programs: the SF-19 Business Relief Program and the Shop Local Program. Through the Business Relief Program, supplies and equipment needed to create a safe environment for employees and shoppers were provided free of cost to local businesses. The Shop Local Program provided $75 in vouchers to every household in the city that could be spent like cash at participating Spanish Fork businesses. The city has been assisted in these efforts by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The money was made available to cities through the CARES Act passed by the U.S. Congress in March of 2020.

and we have distributed those through the chamber of commerce at no cost,” said Dave Anderson, community and economic department director at Spanish Fork City. These items included face masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray, disposable gloves, cleaning wipes and touchless infrared thermometers. The SF-19 Business Relief Program will remain operational for at least the next few months. Spanish Fork businesses can go to the city’s website at spanishfork.org and fill out a form requesting different items. The city will then order the items, which are sent to the chamber of commerce office. The chamber will then prepare the orders and the businesses can pick them up at the chamber office. So far, the city and chamber have filled more than 500 orders at a cost of about $340,000. Participating businesses have ranged from professional offices to restaurants and manufacturers. “The feedback that we’ve received has been very positive,” Anderson said. “We’ve had businesses say that being able to get those supplies from the city has made it so they’ve been able to stay open.”

HELPING RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES

The Shop Local Program operated during November and December of 2020. In early November, a notice was sent out to local businesses inviting them to participate in the program. The city then mailed three individual vouchers worth $25 each to every household in Spanish Fork. Beginning in the third week of November and continuing through the end of 2020, residents could spend these vouchers at participating businesses like cash. Businesses then had until the end of January to return the vouchers to the city, which sent the businesses a reimbursement check. “One of the things that we’ve liked about the concept is that every household in Spanish Fork got basically $75 in cash or the equivalent of that to spend,” Anderson said. This helped residents, some of whom may have been hit hard financially by the pandemic, and supported businesses through increased spending. A total of 258 businesses participated in the Shop Local Program. The vouchers sent out to residents were worth a total of about $900,000, and vouchers worth a total of about $664,000 were submitted for reimbursement. “I think it’s been great for the community during definitely a time of need,” Anderson said.

A GREAT PLACE FOR ALL Whatever stage of life you’re in — from a family with young children to retired — the Spanish Fork/Salem area has it all. With new construction going strong in both cities, the housing options are plentiful. New businesses are opening in the Canyon Creek area of Spanish Fork, providing even more shopping opportunities close to home, and with new parks recently finished and being constructed in both cities, recreational opportunities are also expanding.

A GROWING, VIBRANT COMMUNITY

“We have everything that we could possibly need within the community,” said Emerson Croxton, who moved to Spanish Fork last August with his wife Stephanie and three children ages 5, 3 and 1. The Croxtons lived in Concord, California, for about five years before making the move to Spanish Fork. They decided to relocate after the COVID-19 pandemic led Emerson’s company to have its employees work remotely. They have family and friends in the Lehi/Riverton and Salem/Elk Ridge areas, and Spanish Fork seemed like a good midpoint between them. However, also seemed a good fit for their family. “We felt good about Spanish Fork,” Emerson said, adding that it is a growing comunity and has a lot of people in the Croxtons’ age range. “It had everything basically my wife would need in support for the kids.”

Their home has easy access to the freeway via U.S. Highway 6, and shopping is close by as well. Emerson said his family does 90 percent of its shopping at Costco and Walmart, then joked that they eat 90 percent of their meals at Chick-fil-A. “So, having those close obviously was great for us,” he said, laughing. The area has good future school opportunities for the Croxtons’ children, Emerson said, and their new neighborhood has many families with young children. This has made it easy to make friends with people in similar circumstances as their own family. “We have plans to integrate into the community and make it a part of our lives,” Emerson said.

RETIREMENT LIVING

Gail Smith moved to Salem last September with her husband Barclay. They came from Mesquite, Nevada, but have lived in various areas in and around Utah Valley in the past. Their move from Nevada was prompted by a desire to be closer to family.

A GREAT PLACE FOR ALL

Since they are retired and had lived in a senior community in Mesquite, they wanted to find a similar situation in Utah County that was peaceful and quiet but still close to amenities such as shopping. All their requirements were met when they found a senior community in Salem. “We enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountains, the pastures with horses, the rural setting, the hometown feel,” Smith said. Yet, at the same time, the Smiths are 10 minutes away from major big box retailers and also close to medical providers. “Our backyard view is to Loafer Mountain and our front yard view is to Mt. Timpanogos,” Smith said. Smith is looking forward to all the summer activities the communities provide. “We have tickets to the rodeo already in Spanish Fork,” she said.

SPANISH FORK MAYOR’S MESSAGE So much has happened in Spanish Fork during the last year, but I’ve never felt more grateful to live in this great city, the home of pride and progress. This last year we opened Adventure Heights All-Abilities Park, dedicated Fire & EMS Station 62, welcomed a host of new businesses and so much more. These are just some of the reasons so many people want to call Spanish Fork home. Despite the economic hit that came to many of our residents and businesses due to COVID-19, our chamber of commerce was adaptive and creative in the way it conducted its operations, provided PPE and other support to businesses, and still put on its traditional events. In November and December, we ran our Shop Local program, which gave residents some holiday funds to spend at businesses within our city. The participation in this program was outstanding and benefited many residents and all kinds of businesses. As we continue to shop local, we ultimately make our community better for all.

I take pride in the tradition of volunteerism the continues to be alive and well. Many of the community events and programs, including Fiesta Days, the Harvest Moon Hurrah, the Easter Egg Hunt, Main Street Trick or Treat, the Winter Lights Parade and our various recreation and arts programs, went through some major changes last year. Pulling off these events would not have been possible, and won’t be possible in the future, without countless volunteers. Thank you to all those who serve in one way or another. I encourage everyone to take time and volunteer in whatever way they can. Your efforts make a difference. I’m thankful for the wonderful opportunity that it is to serve this great community. Even if you did not grow up in Spanish Fork, I hope that as you contribute to the community and participate in everything we have to offer, Spanish Fork will become your hometown, and that you will see why Spanish Fork is the home of pride and progress. NEW LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

This spring, Spanish Fork residents will see a new and long-awaited structure begin rising above south Main Street. It’s one building that will fill two roles: providing the community with a new library and the city with much-needed office space. Overall, it will become a central community landmark. “We’ve really envisioned this building being much more than just the library; we’ve seen it as a community gathering place,” said Scott Aylett, director of the

Spanish Fork Library. The church at 80 S. Main — just south of the Spanish Fork City office building, which was converted from the historic Thurber School — has been torn down to make way for the 40,000-square-foot new building, and the site has been prepped and made ready for concrete work. About two-thirds of the building will house the library; the other third will house the city’s finance department and a new, larger area for city council meet-

ings. The finance department includes utility billing, meaning the building will become the place where people may pay their utility bills or sign up for service. The new building is anticipated to be completed by fall of 2022.

NEW BUILDING, NEW POSSIBILITIES

The increase in space will allow the library to expand both its collection and its program offerings. The current library, located in City Park across the street from where the new library is being built, measures about 12,000 square feet and has no staff offices, no study rooms and only one 500-square-foot room for programs. The new library will have a large multipurpose room and other program areas totalling about 4,000 square feet. There will be a dedicated teen program room and a children’s program room as well as space for adult programs. “It’s a great opportunity for us to essentially write a new future for the library and do things that we haven’t been able to do before,” Aylett said. He estimated that the library will be able to expand its collection by 30 percent in the new building. New technologies will also be utilized. This summer, library employees will begin adding RFID chips to all its items, making them ready for the self-checkout system that will be implemented in the new library. There will also be an automatic book sorter installed in the new library. Books will be placed on a conveyor belt, where they’ll be scanned and sorted into five different bins depending on where they need to be shelved. This system will save 6 to 10 hours a day in staff time, Aylett said.

DESIGNED WITH COMMUNITY INPUT

When designing the building, the city and its architect took into account the historic look of the neighboring city office building as well as residents’ desires for the building. In July of 2019, the Spanish Fork City Council approved a plan to conduct a feasibility study to identify what services and amenities the new library needed and what residents would like to see included. A public open house was held in November of 2019 where those attending participated in a variety of activities to provide input on the library’s design. The city also posted two different surveys to solicit the public’s input. Residents indicated they loved the historic look of the old Thurber School but also wanted a lot of natural light. As a result, the north side of the new building, which will house the finance office and council chambers, will be primarily brick with windows similar to the city office building. The south side, where the library will be located, is more contemporary looking. “We feel like we came up with a good balance between being respectful of the city office building adjacent to it while also preserving that more modern feel with a lot of natural light and windows,” Aylett said. Residents also expressed a strong desire to preserve the green space at City Park, which is why the old library wasn’t torn down and the new building constructed in its place. There is not currently a specific plan for what will happen to the old library building when the new building is completed, but Aylett said it will likely house city offices. “We’re excited for our patrons. This is something that the public has asked for and wanted, and the mayor and council has seen a need for it for a long time, and we’re now on the cusp of having it happen,” Aylett said. “We can’t wait.”

EMERGENCY SERVICES NEW FACILITIES IMPROVING ACCESS IN EMERGENCIES Future planning by Spanish Fork City and Intermountain Healthcare has led to exciting improvements in emergency response and care from both organizations at nearly the same time. Intermountain began plans to build its Spanish Fork Hospital several years ago, breaking ground for the $150 million facility on Aug. 13, 2018. Located at 765 E. Market Place Drive just east of Interstate 15 and north of U.S. Highway 6, the hospital was projected to open in the fall of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed construction somewhat, but hospital staff are now receiving deliveries of supplies and organizing the interior of the facility in anticipation of its opening April 5 at 6 a.m. Spanish Fork City also spent the last several years planning the construction of its second fire and EMS station in the city. Ground was broken on Station 62 on Oct. 2, 2019, at 2635 E. Canyon Road, and the building was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 14, 2020. Emergency medical services operations at the new station began on a full-time basis in January with two ambulances operating out of the facility. A new fire engine is also on order for the station. All of this adds up to faster response times and closer emergency care for Spanish Fork residents in 2021. “Our turnaround time should improve with the hospital right here in our community,” said Spanish Fork City Deputy Chief of Emergency Medical Services Ryan Baum. “As a community, we’re really excited to have such a valuable asset so close to home. Healthcare-wise, it’s going to be a game changer for the citizens of Spanish Fork.”

BUILT FOR THE FUTURE

Spanish Fork’s Public Safety Building, located downtown at 370 N. Main, was completed in 1996, but with the area’s population growth, the city knew a second fire station would be needed. The Spanish Fork Fire Department is responsible for the largest area in Utah County; it’s response area stretches from West Mountain east to Soldier Summit up Spanish Fork

Canyon. “With growth, you want to be able to serve all of your citizens to the best of your ability, and we’d had the need for several years to be able to provide them life-saving services in a more timely manner. Adding a station up here allowed us to do that,” Baum said during an interview at the new fire station. The downtown station also serves as the base for two ambulances. For emergency response, the city has been split in half, with the downtown station serving the west half of Spanish Fork and the new station serving the east side. The new station also has living quarters for six people, allowing personnel to be onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EMS crews have started working full-time at the station, which has been built to eventually also accommodate full-time firefighting personnel. “Looking into the future, this station is built for the future,” Baum said.

EMERGENCY SERVICES TREATMENT CLOSER TO HOME

The new 33-bed Spanish Fork Hospital will bring medical and surgical services closer to residents in the Spanish Fork area who must currently travel to Payson, Provo or beyond for these services. “In a lot of conditions, time is a huge factor,” said Janet Frank, spokesperson for Spanish Fork Hospital, and having a resource like a hospital even 20 minutes closer to a patient can be vital. “We have that here now in Spanish Fork closer to everybody in South County.” Cassie Purkey, emergency department manager at Spanish Fork Hospital, said having a hospital nearer is especially important for patients with stroke symptoms or chest pain. “We will be doing a lot of education around stroke prevention here in Spanish Fork because time is brain,” she said. Purkey said the hospital has hired an incredible emergency department team with a lot of experience. She and her staff are now working to make sure their department is stocked and ready, adding that even small things like Band-Aids

have to be dealt with. “We’re just excited to get started. There’s a lot of work that goes into this,” Purkey said. “We spend a lot of time making sure that we can take care of whatever walks through this door on day one.” The hospital’s emergency department

has 12 rooms and a critical care bay, and some of the rooms have been customized for different needs. The behavioral health room is designed to prevent a patient from accessing breakable items or anything else they might use to injure themselves. The isolation/bariatric room was created for patients who have contagious conditions like COVID-19; the air from the room is vented directly outdoors. Next to the isolation room is a decontamination room where patients can shower and have dangerous substances removed. This room has its own door to the outside, meaning patients can enter without exposing anyone else in the emergency department to contaminants. Purkey said motorcycle accident victims are sometimes exposed to gasoline, and this room will help keep the gas odor from inundating the entire emergency department. All the emergency rooms are also equipped with Teleheath capabilities. Through this technology, caregivers can access medical specialists at another facility through a video link. Those experts can see the patient through the link and give their recommendations for treatment. This means specialists are immediately accessible even if they’re not physically at the Spanish Fork Hospital. “It’s virtual care,” Purkey said. “It’s essentially another person in the room without them having to actually be there.”

As the new hospital readies for opening, Intermountain Healthcare staff members have been meeting with Spanish Fork first responders to coordinate how they will work together to respond to area emergencies. Baum said developing that relationship is important in providing the best service possible to residents. Purkey said she’s been giving tours of the hospital to small groups of emergency responders from various agencies since January. “Really, they’re part of our team, and we’re part of their team, ” she said, adding that she will also be creating a presentation to take around to emergency response agencies, something she will continue to do on an annual basis. Jed Trumpet, emergency management program manager for Spanish Fork Hospital, said his job is to coordinate and collaborate with responding agencies in Spanish Fork and other communities on planning for potential disasters. Part of that effort is holding an annual Hazard Vulnerability Assessment

COX-HENDERSON ADMINISTRATION Encouraging business growth and helping develop the talented workforce businesses need are top priorities for Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson. “Gov. Cox and I have six policy priorities that we are focused on as an administration, and economic advancement is number one,” Henderson said. “We are very committed to making sure that we have economic success in the state of Utah.” Gov. Cox was sworn in as Utah’s 18th governor and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson as the ninth lieutenant governor of Utah during a ceremony held at the Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins on Jan. 4. Henderson had served as a senator representing Utah’s Seventh District since 2013. The Seventh District includes Spanish Fork, Salem, Provo, Payson, Elk Ridge, Springville, Woodland Hills, Vineyard and Santaquin. A resident of Spanish Fork for more than 20 years, she and her husband Gabe have run a business locally providing home health services. The transition from senator to lieutenant governor has been difficult and time-con-

suming, especially with the Utah Legislature beginning its 2021 session shortly after her inauguration, but Henderson said she loves it. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity because it’s a chance to make a difference and be involved in ways that I think are really important,” she said. Both she and the governor plan to work to benefit businesses throughout the state and make sure there’s fertile ground for business growth. Part of helping businesses succeed is ensuring residents have educational opportunities to obtain needed skills while industry and education leaders are working together to make sure the skills being taught are the skills required by businesses. “We’re seeing a lot of changes that are occurring in the economy, and this is an important component,” Henderson said. “It was important before, but it’s even more important now with all the changes during the past year.” Henderson said she and the governor are also interested in overhauling the state’s business incentives programs to be more targeted and transparent. ONE UTAH ROADMAP In January, Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson released a plan for their administration’s first 500 days. Called the “One Utah Roadmap,” the plan outlines policy priorities and suggested action items based on their campaign promises and stated goals.

those out further.” Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Henderson said Utah is doing well overall, adding that Utah has the fifth-lowest unemployment rate in the nation and is one of only a few states that have seen growth during the pandemic. “Some sectors of the economy have really been fine and benefited and others have done really terribly and have been really hurt,” she said, “and so we definitely want to target incentives and target

opportunities toward those sectors of the economy that have been hurt.” Henderson said the COVID-19 vaccine distribution is the “light at the end of the tunnel,” and the state is working hard to get vaccines out to the public. “If we can get the vaccine supply that we need in our state so that everybody who wants a shot can get a shot, that’s our key to getting out of this and opening everything up and getting back to normal,” Henderson said.

THE ROADMAP FOCUSES ON SIX PRIORITIES: 1. Economic advancement, including ways the state can develop talent, incentivize businesses and foster innovation. 2. Education innovation and investment, including how the state can recruit and retain quality teachers and focus on at-risk learners.

SALEM CITY MAYOR’S MESSAGE As mayor of Salem, I would like to thank the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce for giving me the opportunity to introduce you to our beautiful community and share some of the highlights we enjoy as Salem citizens. Honored by AdvisorSmith, Salem City was again in the top 10 safest cities in Utah in 2020. Salem is rapidly growing and becoming home to a fabulous community of people. During the last several years, we have seen tremendous growth in the population of Salem. We now have three elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high, a high school and a charter school. We are excited to bring Salem Fiber to our residents. We are redefining internet access in our town by deploying the most technologically advanced fiber network, and we will bring you never-before-seen access to the internet. This process will take approximately two to three years to complete. We are in the process of building a new family park located on 300 West. The Stanley and Cally Cole Park will provide the residents with wonderful opportunities to spend time with loved ones and friends. If you have never visited the community of Salem, you should plan a trip with your family to enjoy the beauty and recreational opportunities found at our beloved Salem Pond. It is a hot spot for the people of our community and our neighbors. Any day of the week you will find families fishing, swimming, feeding the ducks, picnicking, kayaking, floating

on small boats, or simply resting in the shade of the trees enjoying the breathtaking view of the mountains. Christmastime is a special treat at Salem Pond as residents and visitors come from all over to view the spectacular display of Pond Town Christmas. This display is made up of floating Christmas trees and lights of every color that blanket the park and surrounding homes. In the summer, as part of our Salem Days celebration, families flock to the pond and enjoy the fireworks display as they cascade over the water. It is an event that unites the community as residents come together to celebrate the hometown they love. Salem is an active community, and the citizens love the recreation opportunities available to all residents on a number of levels: soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, cheerleading, dance, volleyball, fishing, tennis, football, horse riding and more. COLE PARK SALEM CREATING CITY’S FIRST FAMILY DESTINATION PARK Construction work is well underway for Salem’s first-ever “family use” park, and residents can anticipate being able to enjoy all the park’s amenities by spring of 2022. All utilities have been installed at Stanley & Cally Cole Park, a new 6.5acre park now under development at 600 South and 300 West in Salem. The park will include two pavilions and restrooms; a splash pad; a large, destination-type playground; pickleball courts; and a grassy area big enough for some sports. While Salem has recreational parks designed for sports like baseball and soccer, Cole Park will be the city’s first park designed specifically to provide a place where families can go to relax, have a picnic and let the kids play. “We’re really excited to add the park and a different avenue for the families of Salem to recreate outdoors,” said Matt Marziale, Salem City’s public works director. The park is being funded entirely through city impact fees.

The park is currently in phase 2 of construction. Phase 1 saw the earthwork done in the park area; phase 2 involves completing the infrastructure, concrete work and parking lots. One pavilion is already standing at the site waiting for its concrete floor to be poured. Phase 3 will involve constructing the restrooms and sprinkler system, planting grass and building the pickleball courts. Four pickleball courts with lighting for evening play will be created at Cole Park. “We have had incredible demand for pickleball courts,” Marziale said. Salem is home to the first pickleball court built in Utah County; the city still has only that one court, and it gets a lot of use. Four additional pickleball courts, also with lighting, are planned for construction at the Salem Loafer View Recreation Complex after completion of the Cole Park courts.

SPLASH PAD & PLAYGROUND

Marziale said all the elements of Phase 3 are expected to be completed sometime in July; phase 4 of the park will involve creation of the splash pad and the playground. The splash pad will include in-ground spraying features as well as structural amenities. It is Salem’s first splash pad. The playground will be large and created with a fun theme in mind that children will enjoy. It will also be covered with shade sails. Other amenities planned for the park include a disc golf course, horseshoe pits and a small amphitheater area. Phase 4 is anticipated to be completed by spring of 2022.

WEST SIDE RECREATION

The city had been searching for property on the west side of town that could be used for a park when the children of Stan and Cally Cole decided to sell their family’s farm to the city. Cole Park will be Salem’s first park on its west side; about 200 homes are currently scheduled to be built in the west area of the city. “It was an ideal location,” Marziale said. “It’s on the west side, but it’s still centralized enough in Salem that it’s not going to be difficult for people on the bench side of Salem or the east side of Salem to get to the park.” The city’s master plan also called for 300 West to be widened, which is being done as part of the park development. This will include creating turn lanes for traffic entering the park.

Salem City is now offering its residents with a technologically advanced fiber-tothe-home network that will revolutionize how they use the internet. Salem Fiber, the city’s new internet and phone provider, is installing the most advanced Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) system avialable. Utilizing an Active Ethernet network, the system will provide a separate fiber connection to each home or business, preventing users from having to share bandwidth with their neighbors. Active Ethernet offers unparalleled speed, upgradability and reliability. Today, the system offers speeds from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps, but 100 Gbps and higher are on the horizon. The network will be owned and operated by Salem City. “Salem couldn’t wait for others to decide we could have fast and reliable Internet service,” states the fiber.salemcity. org website. “Our residents were very clear; we need it and we need it NOW. Salem will never allow others to decide we have to be a second-class city. We know how great we are and how much better a fiber-to-the-home network will make our amazing community. Thanks to your city leaders, past and present, Salem is ready to make our quality of life even better in our town. Help us build an even better tomorrow for the city we all love.”

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The Salem Fiber website offers the following Q&A information: WHO IS SALEM FIBER? Your city, your neighbors, your family and friends. Salem Fiber is another utility offered by Salem City with the same great service you expect from the city. Salem Fiber is you and us!

HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST? Check out fiber.salemcity.org for the internet and telephone services we offer. Fiber technology is always getting faster and better and new speed and service will become available.

WHAT IS “FIBER TO THE HOME”? Salem Fiber will run a dedicated fiber optic cable to your house to provide the fastest, most upgradable Internet access possible. You will experience the internet in a new, improved way that you have never had before, and when your demand grows, fiber is ready to deliver.

ARE YOU RAISING TAXES TO PAY FOR IT? No, Salem Fiber does not use tax dollars. The system will be paid for by the residents who take the service. Nobody is required to take Salem Fiber but once you try it you’ll know how great the Internet can be.

DO I NEED A FIBER TO MY HOUSE? Yes! A fiber provides the ultimate internet experience. The speed is unrivaled and the reliability is beyond compare. While other internet technologies struggle to keep up with customer demands, fiber always delivers the fastest and most reliable service.

HOW FAST IS IT? You can choose the speed you want, from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps. And the service is the same speed up and down, unlike so many fiber-to-the-home systems. You gotta try it to believe it. And just wait, we are going to get even faster!

PHONE SERVICE Using the same fiber optic cable as the internet, Salem Fiber is offering residential landline phone service to homes. The service includes free installation, no required contract, fiber optic call clarity, free caller ID, free call forwarding, free remote forwarding via the web, free advanced voice mail including email notification, and free three-way calling. Having a landline can help lessen your reliance on your cell phone, provide communications when cell service is out and limit the minutes needed for your cellular plan. With Salem Fiber Phone Service, you keep your phone and your phone number while adding the fiber advantages. For more information about Salem Fiber, including plans and pricing, visit fiber.salemcity.org.

HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST ME TO GET ON SALEM FIBER? Become a charter member of Salem Fiber and your installation is free! Charter members sign up as soon as it is available when we are still working in your neighborhood. Watch for a notification to become a charter member and save $100. WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE AT MY HOUSE? We are beginning to build the system this year and it will take about three years to complete the build and have fiber available to every home in Salem. Check back to our website (fiber.salemcity.org) for coming schedules and maps. ARE YOU GOING TO DIG UP THE STREETS? The installation will use directional boring to minimize disruption to residents. Fortunately, Salem has been installing fiber conduit for over a decade, and that foresight is really going to pay off. We will be in your way at times and we ask for your patience, but believe us, it will be worth it!

NEBO SCHOOL DISTRICT SIXTH, SEVENTH GRADES RETURNING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL Salem sixth- and seventh-grade students entered their new middle school last fall, and some Spanish Fork students will follow in their footsteps this year. Nebo School District is in the midst of returning to the middle school model where students attend sixth and seventh grades in middle school rather than staying in elementary school for sixth grade and attending seventh grade in junior high. As part of that process, and utilizing part of the funds from a $298 million bond issue approved by district voters, the district constructed the new Valley View Middle School in Salem. Valley View opened last August. Two additional new middle schools – Maple Grove Middle School in Mapleton and Spring Canyon Middle School in Springville – are under construction and will open this fall. Their designs are essentially identical to Valley View. Diamond Fork Junior High School in Spanish Fork will transition into a middle school in 2021. “It’s a fantastic building. It’s one of the best in the district, I think,” said Valley View Principal David Knudsen. At 143,000 square feet, the new two-story school has 51 teaching stations,

two computer classrooms, two resource classrooms, a full gym with a track on the second floor, a lecture hall serving as a meeting place for larger groups, and a cafetorium with a stage for large performances. “The kids were excited,” Knudsen said while describing his school’s opening last fall. “They were really excited about the building. I think there still is an excitement about the building.” Valley View features the latest in educational technology. Every classroom is outfitted with a large interactive touch screen that looks like a flat-screen television but operates much like a giant iPad. This technology will also be placed in classrooms at Maple Grove and Spring Canyon. The school is also offering band, orchestra, choir, drama and art classes. The middle school model allows sixth-graders to access extracurricular classes such as these a year earlier than if they had waited until seventh grade to leave elementary school. Valley View students have already presented a musical this year and are now working on a play, Knudsen said. The transition to middle schools is also making it possible

for all the students at a middle school to attend the same junior high school, then the same high school. Students from Salem, Mt. Loafer and Foothills elementary schools attend Valley View along with students from Barnett and Taylor elementaries in Payson. Valley View students will eventually attend Salem Junior High and then Salem Hills High School. When Maple Grove Middle School opens, it will pull students in from Sierra Bonita, Spanish Oaks and Rees elementary schools in Spanish Fork along with all elementary school students in Mapleton. These students will eventually attend Mapleton Junior High and then Maple Mountain High School. The new Maple Grove is being constructed at 1587 W. 400 South in Mapleton. It is about 70 percent complete; the mild winter has put construction ahead of schedule. Nate Whitney will serve as its principal. “It’s kind of fun to walk through it and see everything coming right along, and it’s really pretty neat the way it’s all coming together,” Whitney said. It’s estimated Maple Grove will open with about 1,040 students, and it will also offer band, choir, orchestra and other extracurricular classes. Maple Grove will have students organized into “pods,” a system also being utilized at Valley View. Whitney explained that groups of about 90 students will be organized into pods, and each pod will have three teachers assigned to it. These teachers’ classrooms will be located in close proximity to each other, and the

students will rotate from one classroom to the next during the day to be taught core subjects such as math, English and science. Both Whitney and Knudsen said they see the pod system as a great way to help students transition from elementary school, where they stayed with one teacher all day, to junior high, where they will rotate through many teachers during

the day. “When you’re transitioning from elementary school, where they’ve had one teacher all day long, they still have a home base” with their pod, Knudsen said. “It really comes down to the ownership of kids, of teachers really being able to own kids and say, ‘These are my kids and I’m connected to them in a much

NEBO SCHOOL DISTRICT more personal way,’” Whitney said. When Valley View was getting ready to open, community volunteers came together to help move in and assemble hundreds of desks and chairs and ready the school for its first day. The Salem Hills High School cross country team, which frequently ran by the school site, volunteered its help when members saw the moving had begun. “It was a fun community time for those who were involved,” Knudsen said. Maple Grove students are going to be “taken aback” when they enter their new, beautiful school, Whitney said. “These kids will definitely take with them for the rest of their life that experience of opening a new school and being the first group of kids in it,” he said.
