Lehi Mayor’s Message

Welcome to the best week of the summer! Early pioneers settled in our area over 170 years ago, and that was the start of our very rich heritage. I hope you are looking forward to the Lehi Round-Up event as much as I am! The Lehi Round-Up is back, and this year’s celebration promises to be a very exciting event-filled week. As always, highlighting the week will be our unique miniature float and livestock parades, our wide variety of fun-filled activities to enjoy and our famous Lehi Round-Up Rodeo! This celebration can only be provided through the great efforts of many local volunteers and organizations. We are always looking for citizens willing to help with the activities. If you are interested, please contact the city at (385) 201-1000. We give great thanks to members of the Lehi

Civic Improvement Association for their hard work and sponsorship of the rodeo. Without their efforts, this event could not take place. Everyone can find a fun activity to be involved in, so gather your family, invite your friends or just come by yourself to participate. Please take the time to review the schedule of activities and then block out that time on your calendars. Remember that tickets for the rodeo sell out quickly, so plan now to make that purchase. Tickets can be bought online at www.lehirodeo.com or in person at our own Macey’s or Kohler’s food stores. So, dust off your boots and grab your hat, and I will see you at Lehi City Round-Up. Lehi Mayor Mark Johnson

Round-Up Parade Grand Marshal Lee & Nancy Stewart Lee and Nancy are lifetime Lehi residents who both graduated from Lehi High School in 1964. One year shortly after Nancy and Lee were married, Nancy was making a float for the parade when Lee was asked to pull the Miss Lehi float. This was a responsibility he enjoyed for almost 25 years. In 1994, Lee was asked to serve on the CIA board. “I have worked with great men during my time in the CIA,” he said. “I first worked with LaVere Downs, George Tripp, Mel and Blaine Anderson, Blackie Harris, Gary Lewis, Ray Jacklin and Stan Lewis. These men and their wives dedicated years of service to bring Lehi citizens the Lehi Roundup Rodeo.” Nancy and Lee also served for many years as Lehi’s Santa and Mrs. 8

Claus. They rode on Lehi’s Christmas parade float and attended many school and church parties. They borrowed a Santa suit their first year and then invested in one they used for nearly 25 years. Lee worked for many years as

a carpenter and Nancy worked for Wasatch and Central banks. They have four children: LeAnn, Nanette, William, and RaeLyn. They adore their 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Saga of the Rodeo Grounds

14

By Dona Anderson Our Round-Up history would not be complete without the “Saga of the Rodeo Grounds.” This property has seen horse races, dancing, gymnastics, cow-milking, baseball games, concerts, parades, horsepulling contests (with large sums of money wagered) and just about any social activity a typical Western community supports. In July of 1900, Lehi City purchased this property from John Beck. On July 19, some 225 workers turned out to clear the ground and build a dance floor. These enthusiastic volunteers erected a grandstand, built a fence on the northeast side of the property and leveled an area suitable for a baseball diamond. All was in readiness for the first program and parade at Lehi’s new City Park and an excited crowd gathered to celebrate Utah’s holiday, July 24. Then, on Aug. 2, 1900, many dancers eagerly set about getting work completed, including a cover over the floor, by the end of the month. The were concerned about a smoother surface on the dance floor because the rough paneling was hard on boots, shoes and, especially, feet. On Jan. 1, 1901, the Grand Sugar Ball was held in Lehi’s new “ballroom.” From then on, this location became the center of social life in Lehi. There was even a memorial service honoring the assassinated President McKinley on Sept. 19, 1901. Family reunions and parties honoring retiring bishoprics and some activities involving the “Doughboys” of World War I were staged there. In 1904, and through the efforts of Willis Whipple, a new maple floor replaced the original planking. By 1914, sport enthusiasts moved in with basketball and volleyball played in this “pavilion.” Gymnastic equipment (trapezes, horizontal bars and swinging rings) and even a wrestling mat were added. It became a popular

setting for “Indoor Baseball” games with nights reserved for both boys and girls. As popular and versatile as this pavilion became, its career was shortlived and additional plans for the site necessitated having it moved. In March of 1916, Lehi City offered the pavilion for sale. On March 6, 1919, it was torn down and materials used in the construction of our present Memorial Building. A “Wild West Show” was presented on June 30, 1921, in the temporary arena. This was followed by the first real rodeo in 1927. January of 1931 saw the formation of a great homecoming celebration to be called Utah Sugar Beet Days. Included in those plans was the enlarging of the rodeo arena and remodeling work necessary to accommodate the new sport and its spectators. In 1932, everyone decided that rodeo was here to stay and an investment of $25,000 was made in the purchase of chutes, vests and fencing. Later, additional chutes and bleachers were

moved from the Evans’ Ranch west of Lehi. The 1940 Lehi Free Press report of the forthcoming rodeo stated, “Lehi’s rodeo grounds were inspected by official rodeo inspectors. They reported the grounds to be the best rodeo facility in the state with 3,000 seats in the shade.” A large stand of trees provided natural shade and fence along the west side of the property. Their cool, welcome shade attracted children, parade participants and baseball spectators and picnics. The trees have since been removed providing convenient working pens for rodeo stock and the high wooden fence provided protection for the animals and is a great place to announce Round-Up dates each year. Lehi’s rodeo grounds are well-known and appreciated by professional cowboys and stock contractors. The efficient manner in which the rodeo is conducted is also a trademark of the Round-Up. One year, Casey Tibbs, the world’s champion cowboy, was being featured at

the Round-Up. He presented himself at the west gate where Robert Allred was stationed. Tibbs asked to be admitted. Mr. Allred asked for a ticket and because Casey didn’t have a ticket, he was refused admittance. So Casey asked Mr. Allred if he knew who he, Casey, was. Allred replied, “Not even the Lord could get in here without a ticket!” The next year when Mr. Allred attended the rodeo convention, the matter of requiring tickets for performers came up for discussion. Casey Tibbs quickly spoke up, saying, “In Lehi, Utah, the guy there wouldn’t even let the Lord in without a ticket.” The grounds are used by high school rodeo clubs, local riding clubs, FFA stock shows, queen contests and team roping contests, and many individuals who need a place to

exercise horses. In an ever-changing, fast-moving society, we are fortunate to have a place in our community as richly endowed with pioneer and Western heritage.

We salute those hardy individuals who had the foresight and determination to provide this place where we can round up so many good times and memories.

Lehi Round-Up Royalty 2022 Miss Lehi Round Up Rodeo Royalty By C.M. Bond The 2022 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s (PRCA) rodeo season is underway, and the 85th Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is just around the corner. Kicking off the celebration is the Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Queen pageant, which was held on Saturday, April 16, 2022. The new Broadbent Room at the Lehi Police Department was a perfect location for conducting the judge’s interviews, contestant speeches, modeling and impromptu questions. The horsemanship portion of the competition followed at the Lehi Arena. At the conclusion of the competition, the judges selected Rylee Warnick of West Jordan as the 2022 Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Queen with Jenessa Sullivan of Lehi as first attendant and Annie Roper of Riverton as second attendant. We are excited to have these beautiful ladies represent our rodeo. Miniature Float Parade On July 24, 1854, Lehi held its first parade and patriotic celebration. It was a small parade held within the walls of the fort. In 1926, the parade consisted of children on decorated coaster wagons, tricycles and bicycles as well as children in pioneer costumes, all of whom simply paraded around the race track where the present rodeo arena is now located. These first floats were small and usually constructed in recreation halls throughout Lehi. Decorations consisted of crepe paper with banners, flowers and ribbons. Float builders spent hours curling crepe paper to achieve the petal effect. Large quantities of chicken wire and paper napkins were used to create animals and cartoon characters. Later, plastic by the yard was used to make pom-poms of varying sizes, and commercial petal paper made float construction much easier. Highlighted on each float then and now are Lehi’s best product – imaginatively costumed children! We’ve come a long way since then. Each year, parade watchers are thrilled by the imagination and workmanship of the mini floats. As our city grows, bringing people and businesses from all over the country, it’s wonderful to join together to remember our humble beginnings and celebrate the many things that make Lehi such a great place to live.

Arts in the Park Concert The culminating event of the 2022 Round-Up celebration will mark the kick-off of Lehi Arts Council’s summer concert series and will feature the amazing vocals of Lehi resident and performing artist Daniel Beck. The concert will be presented on Sunday, June 26, in Wines Park, 500 N. Center, Lehi. Admission is free. The series is presented by the Lehi Arts Council. Daniel Beck and his family have been residents of Lehi since 2001 and love living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Daniel Beck is a local singer and performer who has enjoyed side work as a recording artist. He has recorded two solo albums, “Love Like That” and “Abide With Me,” as well as features on three EFY CDs. Daniel has enjoyed many perform-

ing opportunities from lead roles in stage musicals and recordings to leading roles in several “Liken The Scriptures” DVDs. “Liken” fans will recognize Daniel as King Saul in “David and Goliath,” King Lamoni in “Ammon and Lamoni,” Rex from “Daniel and the Lions,” and Gabriel from “The First Christmas.” He performed the role of Thomas on Rob Gardner’s “Lamb of God” album. Daniel enjoys his “day job” as a mortgage loan officer with Security Home Mortgage here in Lehi. He considers his greatest accomplishment is marrying the girl of his dreams and having five beautiful children and wishes to thank them for all their wonderful love and support and will probably do so by making them join him on stage for this Arts in the Park Concert!

POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com

Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce Message When the pandemic first began a little over two years ago, we were all sent home into lockdown and forced to adapt. We quickly learned (some faster than others) how to operate virtual meetings for work, school, church and other activities. For me, I was halfway through my junior year of college and interning at the Utah State Legislature when things dramatically changed. I left Provo and moved back to my parents’ house for what I thought would be a few weeks. We all know that a few weeks turned into something completely different than what we were expecting. Two years later, on the other side of this pandemic, we can look back and see the strength and resolve it took to survive the long days and worrisome nights. As we transition back to our normal ways without masks and mandates, it is important that we also return to having a closeness with those around us. During the 2022 Brigham Young University Commencement ceremony, BYU President Kevin J Worthen spoke of a psychological factor called the “Propinquity Effect,” which is defined as “the tendency of individuals to form close relationships with people

they repeatedly encounter. That is, the more often one comes into contact with another person, the more likely it is that one will form a friendship or romantic relationship with that person.” While completing all of our everyday tasks online, we were starved of this; we lacked nearness with those beyond our household. We adapted to make do, but now it is time to reinvest in our relationships with our neighbors and community members. This highlights so clearly the need for a Chamber of Commerce. Here at the Chamber, we provide weekly opportunities to interact with those who you normally may not encounter as well as to develop relationships and meaningful connections for your personal life and for your business. At General Chamber Luncheons, Connect 4 Lunches, golf tournaments and ribbon-cutting ceremonies, chamber members are provided with the opportunity to make the meaningful connections with others in the community that we all need in order to thrive and find fulfillment. I have been with the Point of the Mountain Chamber of

Commerce for a couple months now, and I have been astounded by our members’ dedication to helping those around them. My propinquity to so many wise and kindhearted individuals each month has made the job worthwhile. On behalf of the Chamber, we invite you to step outside and join us at a networking lunch to build connections and get to know those in our fantastic community. GOLF BENEFIT Incredible golf benefit for chamber members The Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce has partnered with both Fox Hollow AND TalonsCove Golf Club this year to provide chamber members with an unmatched golf benefit. There is not another chamber in the State of Utah that is providing this benefit to its members. If you like to golf, we are the chamber for you! Gold members can enjoy FREE foursomes with carts at the Fox Hollow Golf Club. Platinum and higher members can play golf at both Fox Hollow and TalonsCove. This is a totally unique benefit for business professionals who like to conduct networking and close deals on the golf course. Take your clients golfing and close the deal, make it an employee perk, or just break away from the office for a few hours and go take in 9 or 18 holes! Our partnering golf courses provide some of the best golfing in the state. As you golf through the chamber benefit, you will see that these courses offer other fantastic services such as a place to hold your next corporate party or company golf tournament or even your daughter’s wedding reception! You do not need to look any further than Fox Hollow and TalonsCove.

How does it work? Call the chamber office to set up your tee time up to 10 days in advance. The chamber will take it from there and get back with you. There is only one foursome per day as a chamber, so plan accordingly and book as soon as possible. The following applies: • One foursome each day consisting of an 18-hole round of golf or eight golfers playing nine holes. Either way works great. • Saturday (at Fox Hollow) and Sunday play not available. • No scheduling play during days when tournaments are scheduled. • Golfing on major holidays is not allowed through the membership. • Chamber members must contact the chamber office to schedule a tee time, no exceptions. They will not allow you to play if you schedule your own tee time. For more information, contact the chamber office at 801-901-6664 or Mark@ThePointChamber.com.

CHAMBER EVENTS & COMMITTEES

Chamber Ambassador Committee The Chamber Ambassador Committee is a committed group of chamber members who go the extra mile to welcome new chamber members, help current members become more engaged in chamber activities, and honor businesses for their achievements. Committee members visit new chamber members and assist in events such as ribbon cuttings and grand openings. At chamber events, committee members greet all members and help them get to know each other. The committee is also responsible for selecting candidates to be considered for the chamber’s Business of the Month award. Those candidates are then voted on by the chamber membership, and the Ambassador Committee visits the selected winner and presents the business with a plaque and banner. This committee provides some of the very best networking opportunities! For more information on joining the committee, contact the chamber office at 801-901-6664.

Utah Ignite Steering Committee The Utah Ignite Steering Committee is part of the Utah Ignite organization, which operates as a partnership between the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce and US Ignite, a program under the National Science Foundation. Utah Ignite is one of about 40 Smart Gigabit Communities throughout the United States and World. 40

The goal is to create “smart communities” across the globe that collaborate on ideas and share knowledge for the betterment of all residents that live in those areas. Grants are awarded to help advance promising research designed to solve problems, improve quality of life, and save valuable resources and funds by reducing waste and by improving on key efficiencies. Utah Ignite is currently working on implementing better quality air sensors throughout the State of Utah through a grant that was awarded to Tetrad, a local Utah company. Several other states have already ordered sensors that we are producing here. We have also completed a bike trail study to analyze the current conditions and needs for additional bike trails and will also start an active drone study on Utah Lake very soon. The drones will monitor the algae blooms on the lake through the latest infrared technologies. The results of these drones will be transmitted in real time and made available to lake authorities. This will help officials stay on top of the blooms before they can become a hazard. Our chamber is working hard to make Utah better and safer. For more information on joining this committee, contact the chamber office at 801-901-6664.

Utah County Business Summit (Held annually) November 18, 2022 One of Utah County’s top business events of the year, the Utah County Business Summit was launched in 2014 with the intent of providing ongoing education about best business practices to local business professionals. It has since been held every year in the fall. The summit is a half-day event beginning in the morning and

POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com

ending after lunch. Critical insights are discussed and shared during the morning, and attendees have the opportunity to network during lunch. Each year, the summit attracts a group of exceptional speakers with unique perspectives and business insights who inspire, direct and counsel their audience. Past speakers have included Utah Jazz CEO Greg Miller, former NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell, KSL Radio host Maria Shilaos, Overstock.com Chairman and former CEO Johnathan Johnson, and prominent entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of the hit TV show “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” Brandon Fugal. Businesses are also invited to showcase themselves as part of the summit’s vendor exhibition. This annual event was started by the Point of the Mountain Chamber, and, in the spirit of collaboration, the chamber decided to share the event with the other three chambers in northern Utah County. This has proven to be a great idea as the event is attended by professionals from throughout the region and county.

Connect 4 Lunch

(Held on the third Thursday monthly) Connect 4 Lunch is a highly focused, multi-chamber, monthly networking event involving business professionals from throughout the northern Utah County area. Attendees network in groups of no more than six over lunch. These smaller group sizes allow

business professionals of all types to get to know each other in a more meaningful way. Personal and professional experiences are shared and needs and ideas are discussed, all while a fantastic lunch is enjoyed. Those attending are invited to bring a door prize from their business to give away if they wish to receive extra recognition. LEHI MAYOR’S MESSAGE As we rise out of the pandemic that has impacted us for the last two years, Lehi remains committed to providing reliable infrastructure, a great quality of life and excellent services to our businesses and residents. In 2022-2023, we will begin building a fiber network, grow our parks and open space, and expand our public safety services, which I believe will benefit both Lehi businesses and residents. We have recently partnered with Strata Networks to build a fiber network throughout the community, providing reliable, high-speed internet services to residents and businesses. Construction is expected to begin summer 2022 and will take three years to complete. This will make it possible for your employees to work from home and the office more productively. In November, our residents approved the PARC tax, which will fund

recreation and arts projects through a 0.1% sales tax. These funds will be used in part to construct an all-abilities playground at Family Park (in the heart of Lehi) and a recreational area at our nearly completed Dry Creek Reservoir. We are also building a dog park at Willow Park to the west and Shadow Ridge Park in Traverse Mountain. Work/life balance is important to employees, so I am proud that we can provide these valuable amenities for generations to come. Finally, in the next year we will expand our public safety and emergency services to better serve our community. We are beginning the process to design and build Station 84, the fourth fire station to serve Lehi residents. This is necessary to provide efficient response times as our community grows. We are also hiring two new police officers. Most residents feel Lehi is a safe place to live, and we plan to keep it that way.

Lehi City is committed to efficiently and affordably providing full services to our business community. We are proud to be a dedicated partner of the chamber and work to continue to provide the services that have made you successful in the past. Lehi City Mayor Mark Johnson

LEHI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE The best way to describe the last two years is to liken it to a roller coaster ride. Not your new highspeed, hang-upside-down one but the old wooden, creaking, up-anddown roller coaster. COVID-19 had all businesses trying to figure out ways to pivot and service clients or patrons. Mask mandate, no mask mandate, work from home, work in the office, etc. There was a lot of uncertainty and — at times — fear. As we enter 2022, we are seeing no mask mandate, a global impact from the war in Ukraine, rising interest rates to slow inflation, strong housing prices, and Utah with one of the strongest economies in the nation. Overall, Lehi City has seen an increase in sales tax year over year for the last three years. Retail is holding strong and seeing an increase. This is being driven by the lifted mask mandate, consumers wanting to get out more and warmer weather. Our responsibility as a government entity is to be a resource and facilitator for the business community. As we look at 2022, there is exciting news for small businesses. The city is working with Mountainland Association of Governments to create a Revolving Loan Fund for Lehi businesses. The loan fund is intended to serve businesses who have been in business for at least two years, are showing a profit and need working capital to get to the next level. This loan will provide an opportunity for a business that isn’t quite bankable to continue to grow. For more information, reach out to the city economic development department. There are many opportunities for businesses in Lehi City, with more than 5 million square feet of Class-A office space. Overall, construction of Class A Office has slowed as the demand has shrunk. During the pandemic, we saw a huge increase

in warehousing, distribution and manufacturing. This shows the cyclical change and shift in the market as commercial and industrial run counter-cyclical to each other. Developers are starting to look at potential Class A development as demand returns to the market. This demand is being driven by both internal and external companies looking to expand in Utah. As we continue to shape a new future outside of COVID-19, a lot of business are rethinking workforce. Data is showing about 33 percent of employees will permanently work from home, 33 percent will work half-time in the office and the other half at home, and the last 33 percent will permanently work in the office. A concern most businesses have is productivity of their employee base. Recent data shows that employee productivity has decreased through working from home and utilizing video conferencing while innovation hasn’t gotten back to pre-COVID levels. Employees are also becoming more resistant to working in an office setting. Working from home is being viewed as more of a right versus a privilege. Businesses are trying to overcome this issue and find a good balance. Another issue facing businesses is 2% unemployment. A lot of businesses are struggling to find employees and have resorted to creative ways to employ and retain employees. This includes keeping

wages at market rate, providing meals and team building exercises, valuing employees and providing medical services on site. This, as well as raising interest rates, will be one of the top issues facing businesses for the foreseeable future. We will see a new business norm emerge through 2022. I envision our robust economy will continue to grow, creating more jobs and demand for retail and housing. All economic indicators show the growth is healthy and controlled. The key to Lehi City’s success is indeed the secret sauce — placing emphasis on family, values and heritage. Lehi City is definitely “where it’s at.” Marlin Eldred Lehi Economic Development Director

HEALTHCARE New Primary Children’s Hospital to meet growing needs in Utah County Hundreds of new homes are being built throughout Utah County, and projections show that by the year 2038, there will be more children in Utah County than Salt Lake County. At the current population, one-third of all the children obtaining treatment at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City are traveling there from Utah County. This growing need to bring specialized children’s healthcare closer to families in Utah County led Intermountain Healthcare to build a second Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi. With ground broken for this new hospital in November of 2020, the project is now about halfway through its 37-month build time and on track to open in early 2024. Located at 2250 N. Miller Campus Drive in Lehi, the new hospital will be located near a large amount of the residential growth taking place in Utah County as well as the freeway interchange of Lehi’s 2100 North and Interstate 15. The new hospital site will be known as the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Campus in honor of the Miller family’s support and vision for children’s health and wellness in the Intermountain West. “All those things came together to really make Lehi the perfect area for serving the community,” said Lisa Paletta, administrator of Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi. “Having a sick child is hard enough without adding the burden of a commute.” With an estimated cost of $335 million, the new 38-acre hospital campus will feature a five-story, 66-bed hospital and a three-story medical office building encompassing a total of 486,000 square feet. It will be the first full-service 48

children’s hospital in Utah County and offer all the world-class specialty pediatric services that patients now receive at the Salt Lake City Primary Children’s campus (with the exception of transplant and heart surgery).

Putting children first

From the services provided to the design of the rooms and even the colors of the decor, everything in the hospital will focus on children. “We’ve tried to do anything we could to help ease that burden of having to be at the hospital,” Paletta said. The patient rooms are designed large enough to easily accommodate family and caregivers. State-ofthe-art technology in the building will provide digital communication boards in each room where family members and the patient can view test results and other timely information. “Of course, entertainment at a children’s hospital is a big deal,” Paletta said. Children will have easily access movies and video games in their rooms. The hospital will have a helicopter pad to accept trauma and critical-

POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN CHAMBER | www.thepointchamber.com

ly ill patients and an emergency department where everything is focused on caring for children. The medical office building will house doctors specializing in various aspects of pediatric care and outpatient procedures. Rooms in the Lehi hospital will be connected via a telehealth system to the Salt Lake City Primary Children’s Hospital, allowing doctors at both locations to collaborate virtually if needed.

Being a good neighbor

The south side of the hospital campus is next to 2100 North, a major roadway, but the north side is next to a residential neighborhood. With that in mind, the campus was laid out with the areas causing the most noise and light pollution — such as the helicopter pad and parking areas — located as far away from the neighborhood as possible. “We’ve taken great efforts to be great neighbors, and we’ll continue to be great neighbors,” Paletta said.

Creating a model system

Primary Children’s Hospital on the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Cam-

pus is part of Intermountain Healthcare’s promise to create the nation’s model health system for children. This multi-faceted plan and historic investment of at least $500 million in children’s health will be shared by Intermountain Healthcare and community philanthropic support through an emerging campaign organized by the Intermountain Foundation. “This new children’s hospital in Lehi is really only one element of a historic project that we’re calling Primary Promise,” Paletta said. Plans for the model health system were announced in January 2020, inspiring a transformational $50 million gift from Utah businesswoman, civic leader and philanthropist Gail Miller and the Miller family. Targeted fundraising for the Primary Promise campaign has continued since its announcement, and soon the community at large will be invited to join in efforts to fund this ambitious goal. The Primary Promise campaign is being chaired by four community leaders: Gail Miller, owner and board chair of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies and chair of the Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees; Steve Lund, co-founder and executive board chair of Nu Skin Enterprises; Crystal Maggelet, chair and CEO of FJ Management Inc. and Intermountain Healthcare trustee; and Spencer Zwick, co-founder and managing partne of Solamere Capital. “We are entering a new era in pediatric health that will shape the next century of care for children served by Intermountain and Primary Children’s Hospital,” Lund said. “Generous gifts from the community are helping us achieve our vision to build the nation’s model health system for children without delay.” For more information, visit intermountainhealthcare.org/primary-childrens/about/primary-promise/.

SARATOGA SPRINGS MAYOR’S MESSAGE Our beautiful mountain and lakefront community in the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to grow in a smart and proactive manner to balance residential growth, attract commercial businesses and provide enhanced public amenities and recreational programs. The city recently finalized the purchase of the remaining property needed to move forward with the construction of the city’s park and civic campus. The new Public Safety Building for police and court was completed at the start of 2020. This beautiful new facility sits directly adjacent to Patriot Park and is the first phase of a 26-acre municipal campus that will eventually include a new library, city hall and other amenities. With existing parks, Patriot Park, the municipal campus and land options, the city is looking at the potential for a 150-acre central park and municipal campus with the grandest

50

views of Utah Lake and Mt. Timpanogos in the valley. During the last year, multiple transportation improvements in Saratoga Springs were also completed with more underway. Pony Express from Redwood Road to the Jordan River will be completed this summer and Foothill Boulevard from Crossroads Boulevard to Grandview Boulevard will be improved or built. Both of these projects will provide great relief to east-west congestion as well as north-south traffic through the City of Saratoga Springs. In addition to these improvements, the Utah Department of Transportation will start on the Mountain View Corridor connection from Porter Rockwell Boulevard to 2100 North. This connection is the first phase of a multi-faceted interchange that will provide a whole new means of transportation to alleviate congestion through Saratoga Springs and

provide a long-overdue alternate route to the bottleneck on I-15. This growth is continuing to attract wonderful developments in our community such as Home Depot, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Hobby Lobby and several other exciting new commercial developments. Some of these commercial projects include continued development surrounding Costco and Smith’s Marketplace. These anchor projects spur the development of new businesses here. One of our goals is to make Saratoga Springs a great place to work and live. New commercial development has generated an increased outpouring of interest from a variety of other businesses that are excited to be in the City of Saratoga Springs. We look forward to welcoming these and many new businesses to our community as well as what the future brings. Jim Miller Saratoga Springs Mayor

SARATOGA SPRINGS ECONOMIC MESSAGE Even in the midst of international impacts on the economy, the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to move forward strongly with commercial development, transportation improvements and residential growth. Saratoga Springs has been at the forefront of this residential growth year-over-year for the last 20 years, continually ranking as one of the fastest-growing communities in Utah. The city’s current population is nearing 49,000 residents and growing far ahead of prior projections. This continued growth will translate into a 35% population increase over the next five years or 55,000 total residents. At this rate, Saratoga Springs’ population will nearly double in the next 10 years. As we progress forward, Saratoga Springs is working with commercial developers and brokers to tell our story and demonstrate the unique dynamic of our city and the surrounding region. Our ability to tell this story played a significant role in Home Depot’s announcement to come to Saratoga Springs this year and the development of the surrounding support retail. Recently, Hobby Lobby, Sportsman’s Warehouse and others have opened their doors for business, with more to open in the coming months. Since the announcement of Costco, demand for retail development continues to be strong. A wide variety of businesses have reached out to the city and local developers about opening new locations in our area. These include everything from additional big-box stores to midbox stores, fast-casual dining and sit-down restaurants, hotels, family entertainment, dance schools, medical services and more. Getting to these businesses is now easier than ever. Saratoga Springs’s commercial district is home to a new interchange for Utah’s western freeway system, the Mountain View Corridor. The first phase of this multi-faceted intersection connects

several municipalities to Interstate 15, the Bangerter Highway and Redwood Road. It provides multiple outlets to Salt Lake City and the hub of Silicon Slopes. This interchange is also located next to the future home of two new medical facilities from Utah’s top hospital systems. In the development of the city, we realized we don’t have a “downtown area.” We are excited to be working on plans to create an area of the city that would include a diverse mixeduse area we would be proud to call our downtown with all the amenities you would expect to see there. So, what does all of this growth mean for economic development in Saratoga Springs? It means more retailers and commercial developers are turning their eyes to Saratoga Springs. It means we are proactively cultivating an incredible synergy that businesses are expanding and thriving on.

Most importantly, it means that our residents will continue to find great places where they can work, go out to eat, have fun with their families, and enjoy the amazing quality of life in our community. As we like to say in Saratoga Springs, “Life’s just better here!” Doug Meldrum Economic Development Director City of Saratoga Springs

BUSINESS Sportsman’s Warehouse opens in Saratoga Springs The fastest-growing outdoor retailer in the nation continued its expansion this spring with the opening of two new stores in Utah, one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. Saratoga Springs is home to one of those stores, with this location celebrating its grand opening on April 28. Another Sportsman’s Warehouse opened May 5 in Stansbury Park. The Saratoga Springs store is the 10th location of Sportsman’s Warehouse in Utah. The company has stores nationwide, but is a Utahbased and -founded company, with its first store opening in Midvale in 1986. Encompassing 31,353 square feet, the new Saratoga Springs store is located at 851 N. Redwood Road. Ross Rosier, regional marketing coordinator for Sportsman’s Warehouse, said growth in the Saratoga Springs area made it an excellent place for his company to open a new location. “This is a steadily growing area with a market that we wanted to come out and support,” Rosier said. Whether residents are new to camping and other outdoor activities or they’re seasoned experts, having a Sportsman’s Warehouse store in their community means having experts ready to help connect them with the best products to fit their needs. Rosier said Sportsman’s Warehouse provides staff members who are experts at various outdoor activities and can consult with customers and answer their questions. For example, expert anglers can get answers regarding what bait is best for their next fishing trip while beginners can receive help selecting the gear they need. Each Sportsman’s Warehouse store is unique; images are featured inside each store showcasing highlights of its local area, and each store’s inven52

tory is customized to its location. “We try to make sure that our stores are geared to the region they’re in,” Rosier said. “Our merchant team selects products for the stores that are going to be specifically for that region. … You can’t beat the experience of coming into the store that has gear specific to where you’re going to be recreating and having experts who know about the local area.” For those planning on making a trip to a spot outside their area who may need items not carried locally, associates at their Sportsman’s Warehouse location can help them find what they need online at a kiosk in the store. The new Saratoga Springs Sportsman’s Warehouse has television screens near its entrance that tie into Instagram. When local customers use the hashtag #swsaratoga when posting their latest catch or adventure, their pictures will show up on these in-store screens, known as the “Brag

Boards.” They may see themselves while shopping, Rosier said. Sportsman’s Warehouse also has a goal to contribute to its local area through service. Each store conducts “Maintain the Terrain” events through which employees and the general public come together to participate in service projects such as taking care of a park or cleaning up a river. Going on outdoor adventures creates wonderful memories that can span generations. “That’s kind of the whole mission of Sportsman’s Warehouse: gearing up for the unforgettable,” said Braden Clark, regional marketing coordinator for Sportsman’s Warehouse. “Providing those memories for every part of the state of Utah is really important for us.” “Our mission statement at Sportsman’s is ‘We provide outstanding gear and exceptional service to inspire outdoor memories,’ and that’s what we hope to bring the community out here (in Saratoga Springs),” Rosier said.
