MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to the inaugural edition of the South Valley Chamber of Commerce annual magazine! We are thrilled to present this publication, which marks the beginning of what we hope will become a tradition for many years to come. The South Valley Chamber of Commerce is more than just an organization. We are a team, with staff and committee members who are dedicated to fostering connections, advocating for businesses, providing education and driving growth. Our mission is clear: to work collaboratively with local businesses, governments and community leaders to ensure success, prosperity and job creation for our members and businesses in the south valley region. At the heart of our commitment to education and growth are the various initiatives and programs we offer. The South Valley Business Institute provides courses such as the Business
Accelerator, monthly Boot Camps, Leadership South Valley and, in partnership with Salt Lake Community College, our Everyday Entrepreneur Program. Networking is a cornerstone of our approach. We actively organize events and forums to help connect business leaders with potential customers. We plan and support advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal levels. While our reach extends across Salt Lake County, we have established strategic partnerships with Sandy City, Riverton City, Draper City, South Jordan City and the City of Cottonwood Heights. These alliances ensure that businesses in these communities have access to our programs, connections to relationships, business insights and other valuable courses and events. Our commitment to empowerment is evident in our Women In Business program and the Jr. WIB program.

These initiatives not only bring together industry leaders for events and speakers but they also mentor more than 20 young women from local high schools. These mentees actively participate in planning events and executing responsibilities, culminating in a $1,000 scholarship at the end of the school year for their dedication. As we welcome you to the South Valley, we invite you to be part of a community where growth is not just a buzzword but a reality. Here, businesses and community leaders share a vision that creates opportunities, ensuring that our members achieve more than mere success. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey. Jay K. Cottonwood Heights is literally the geographic gateway to Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. The city is a sub-regional market to the Greater Salt Lake area and provides more than 3,000,000 square feet of high-quality office space that continues to see low vacancy rates. Cottonwood Heights is in close proximity to world-class outdoor recreational amenities and ski resorts like Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird and Alta, and it has well-established residential neighborhoods and vibrant retail centers. The access the city provides to employment centers and to nearby outdoor recreation amenities is second to none, with proximity to three major interchanges of Interstate 215 and to scenic Wasatch Boulevard, which serves as the transportation connection to the canyons. The combination of all these factors makes the city both a wonderful place to live and a vibrant economic hub within the region.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS MAYOR’S MESSAGE Incorporated in 2005, Cottonwood Heights has become a hub for business, recreation, excellent schools and residential living due to its central location and breathtaking scenery. Whether indoors or outdoors, there is an abundance of recreational opportunities to enjoy. Access to all parts of the valley is easy, with travel times averaging 15 to 20 minutes. Our city boasts an active and dedicated volunteer community with multiple advisory committees, including the Arts Council, Historic, Parks Trails, and Open Space committees, which make significant contributions each year. Money Magazine has recognized us as one of the top 100 small cities to live in, and we have
the second most Class “A” office space in the state. Our restaurants are some of the best in the state and the dining options provide an extensive variety. Cottonwood Heights has a rich history that is both fascinating and unique. However, what makes our city truly special is the people who live here. Our community is filled with invested, caring individuals who volunteer their time to serve others. 2022 CENSUS DATA
Population: 96,137
Median Household Income: $95,715
HISTORY OF SANDY CITY It wasn’t too long ago that Sandy City had a much different look. The city’s bustling Cairns District of today, with its businesses, theaters, sporting complexes and conference centers, was once vast fields of sugar beets, orchards and garden plots. Permanent settlers moved into the Sandy area in the 1860s. The original plat consisted of approximately 1 square mile, running north and south along the eastern bank of the Jordan River parallel to the Wasatch Mountains. As a small farming community, Sandy began with few people and widely spaced homes. Would-be farmers willing to try their hand at the thirsty soil - that may have inspired Sandy’s name - took up land along State Street. However, it wasn’t farming that defined Sandy during its early years. When silver mining began in Little Cottonwood Canyon and the railroad arrived in the 1870s, Sandy changed from a quiet agricultural village to a mining boomtown. The sudden influx of industry resulting from the boom also brought on the massive growth of the downtown area. In no time at all, Sandy was a 1-mile-square town containing many thriving businesses including 17 saloons, several hotels, brothels and even a ZCMI Co-op, all
serving the mostly transient miners. The ideal location of Sandy quickly attracted other mining-related businesses such as smelters and sampling mills for testing the ores brought down from the mines. These businesses provided hundreds of lucrative but dangerous jobs for young, strong men. Three major smelters were located in Sandy during this time: the Flagstaff, the Mingo and the Saturn. These made Sandy one of the territory’s most significant smelting centers for many years. Like most mining boomtowns, eventually the motherlode became depleted, the silver mines failed and the boom ceased. Once again, Sandy became a quiet agricultural community. In 1893, Sandy’s population was just over 1,000 and Sandy incorporated, passing its first laws, electing its first mayor, Arthur J. Cushing, and selecting its first council. By 1900, there were only four saloons left in town. By 1910, the total population was 1,716, and 54 percent of the population was under the age of 18. Home construction also grew on the east side of the tracks and spread out, creating several more blocks. Building construction improved and slowed down, which indicated the willingness of people to stay in the community. Sandy
became well known for its farming crops such as beets, alfalfa and peaches. This pace and way of life continued for more than six decades. By the late 1960s, Sandy began experiencing a second boom. Between 1960 and 1990, Sandy’s population grew from approximately 3,300 to over 75,000. Population growth overwhelmed the city center and far exceeded the predictions of city leaders. Neighborhoods began spreading out in all directions and pocket communities began popping up outside of the city boundaries. Annexation became a staple of city council meetings, and eventually the city boundaries expanded from 1 square mile to over 23 square miles. Today, Sandy is estimated to have a population of more than 96,000 and is the sixth largest city in the state.
BUSINESS IN SANDY CITY THE CAIRNS DISTRICT

The Cairns offers new housing options for those wanting to be close to TRAX and amenities for a true live, work, shop and play experience.
Sandy City has welcomed a variety of new businesses, including a Morgan Stanley expansion, Crisp and Green, Crave, Via 313, Raising Cane’s, Dollie’s Soup and Salads, Zimbu, Dirty Bird, Libertango, Dutch Bros, Uptown Jungle, Marshall’s, Spavia and many others. These new ventures contribute to job creation and enhance the city’s commercial landscape. southvalleychamber.com • SOUTH VALLEY CHAMBER MAGAZINE 2024 • 23

Regardless of what month you choose to visit, the south valley region of the Salt Lake Valley is filled with fun activities to choose from. Whether your visit is professional, personal or something else entirely, this area is rich with memory-making opportunities and experiences. From entertainment to adventure, all one needs is a proper guide to tell them where to begin. Well, look no further.
VENUES
One of the first things you’ll want to be sure and do when arriving in the South Valley, is to check what’s on the schedule at any of our many large-scale sports and entertainment venues.
MOUNTAIN AMERICA EXPO CENTER
MOUNTAIN AMERICA EXPO CENTER Located in the heart of Sandy just off of State Street, the Mountain America Expo Center is the second largest expo center in the valley, second only to Salt Lake’s Downtown Expo Center. This venue often hosts a variety of shows and tournaments throughout the year that range anywhere from youth and amateur sports to RV and boat shows and other expositions. Parking is free year-round at the venue, and many of the shows hosted there have little to no entry fee.
AMERICA FIRST FIELD
Home to both of Utah’s Professional Soccer Clubs, Real Salt Lake (MLS) and the Utah Royals (NWSL), the venue has also hosted several concerts as well as other professional exhibition matches in years past. This venue is located just a stone’s throw from the Mountain America Expo Center.

ZIONS BANK REAL ACADEMY
Positioned in Herriman, this venue serves the community in a number of ways. Though its primary purpose is to serve as a school, the academy also plays host to several semi-professional and even some professional sporting events. The Real Monarchs, which is a Next Pro team that competes in the American Soccer League, as well as Utah’s professional rugby team, the Utah Warriors, both use this facility as their home base.

THE 5-MINUTE
LIFE
Daybreak introduced this idea to the Valley. Now it’s upping its game.
Two decades ago Daybreak began as a big promise. A promise to serve up all the elements of life within a short 5-minute walk or bike ride of home — food, outdoor concerts, good schools, workplaces, parks, a big lake and all kinds of fun. Now, under the stewardship of Larry H. Miller Real Estate, Daybreak is delivering the goods in ways nobody could have imagined. Like with Downtown Daybreak and its emerging Ballpark District. A place where professional sports meets family entertainment meets home. And where soon the Salt Lake Bees will play ball. The wonderful thing is, no matter where you choose to live in Daybreak, you have all of Daybreak just outside your front door.

The aquarium is home to more than 4,500 animals that represent more than 500 species from across the globe. The aquarium aims to transport visitors to the corners of the earth in addition to helping them learn more about animals native to Utah and the United States. With dozens of interactive activities and both indoor and outdoor spaces to explore, the aquarium promises to be a major hit for all who visit.

ADVENTURE
Every year, Utah welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to the state with only one goal in mind: to escape! They are seeking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives and want to get out and away from the high demands that bog them down.
SOUTH MOUNTAIN GOLF COURSE, DRAPER

UTAH GOLF
From April to November, there are very few places that offer gorgeous mountain views from the tee boxes like Utah does. With more than a dozen public courses scattered throughout the Salt Lake Valley, there’s a course for every level of golfer, each with its own unique view of the Wasatch Front and each kept in pristine condition. The South Mountain Golf Course in Draper is situated on a hillside at the valley’s southernmost point. While the course can be challenging, its views overlooking the entire valley are unmatched. For those golfers seeking a more friendly lie, perhaps give River Oaks in Sandy City or Riverbend in Riverton a try. And, of course, you can’t go wrong with Glenmoor Golf Course, located in South Jordan, which hosted the 2023 American Junior Golf Association for one of its major events.
HIT THE TRAILS
Speaking of breathtaking mountain views, sometimes the best way to enjoy them is simply to fully immerse oneself. Whether on bike or on foot, those seeking adventure through a deeper connection with nature are sure to find it in the South Valley along the Wasatch Front. One of the most popular trails in the area is Hidden Valley Trail, which is located on the easternmost end of Sandy City. The trail offers a family-friendly hike filled with wildlife and beautiful surroundings. The hike culminates in an astonishing river view that waterfalls over and through the mountainside’s rocky terrain. With parking located at the base of the hike, as well as bathrooms and tables available for use, the hike offers a perfect family or group outing.

WINTER WONDERLAND
Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to Utah in the winter without hitting the slopes and shredding some of our world-famous powder after one of our many snowfalls between late November and early March. However, guests do not have to venture as far up the canyon as Park City to enjoy world-class slopes.
Just a short 18 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon are two of Utah many amazing ski resorts: Alta and Snowbird. While Alta is restricted to skiers only, Snowbird, on the other hand, offers a wide variety of options for the entire family. Likewise, if you make a similar drive up Big Cottonwood Can-
yon, you’ll find Brighton and Solitude resorts. With all these resorts located just minutes from one another, and plenty of sledding and restaurant options located near both resorts, the peak of Little Cottonwood Canyon offers a thrilling experience for visitors of all ages.
