LISA WALKER

Athletic trainer protecting kids on and off the field

Lisa Walker’s job is to protect kids — whether it’s in the classroom instructing them how to have a healthy lifestyle or overseeing their well-being on and off the athletic field.

“People have asked me, why are you still at Springville?” said Walker, who has worked as the athletic trainer at SHS since 1993. “I feel strongly about protecting the kids, and somebody with experience, who feels strongly about this segment of the population, should stay in this arena.”

Walker has an amazingly wide range of responsibilities, from educating coaches and players on injury prevention to responding to coaches’ calls when players are injured, taping up players before practice, creating emergency plans for every athletic team and playing location, and monitoring air quality and weather reports for potential lighting and heat warnings.

This is all in addition to teaching classes at SHS since 2000. She currently teaches classes in medical terminology, sports nutrition, exercise science/sports medicine, emergency medical response and learning strategies.

“I just have a passion for athletic training and for the high school population in general. It’s just important to me that they have the ability to go into the classroom to learn how to be a healthier individual.” Walker said.

Her work covers all sports played at the high school. In the springtime — her busiest season — she oversees nine different sports teams. She attends the practices of the sport deemed to carry the most potential for catastrophic injury, but she is always available for the other coaches if one of their players is hurt.

“I’ve always been on call 24/7,” Walker said.

Construction of the new high school has made this more difficult as sport practices and competitions have had to move away from the high school campus to different locations throughout the city. To help her travel between sites with all her emergency equipment, the school administration

provided her with a street-legal side-byside vehicle, something she said she is very grateful for.

She meets with all coaches at the beginning of each season and maintains regular communication throughout the season. Part of her job is ensuring coaches know about any players who have health issues, how those issues might manifest themselves and how coaches should respond to those issues if Walker is not present.

Immediately after school and before team practices begin, Walker can be found in the SHS athletic training facility helping students get ready for practice, such as getting them taped up or adjusting a brace. If students need physical therapy that she can provide, she puts them to work on that.

Students may also come in with problems or questions; for example, an athlete might now be experiencing pain that wasn’t present at the prior night’s practice.

“It’s like I tell the kids: I’m here to tell you if you’re hurt or when you’re injured, because it hurts to play sports,” Walker said. “And if there is an injury, what is the consequence of the player continuing to play?”

Occasionally, Walker has to sideline a player because of a health issue. This is where her mission to protect kids becomes even more important.

“I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect a child to stand up for themselves medically,” Walker said. “Judgement gets clouded by athletics. It gets clouded by adults, but it’s super clouded in kids. Everybody wants to play and everyone wants to win, and so the ability of most to see the big picture is not — it’s just not there. And so my job as the athletic trainer, as the sports medicine professional, is to make the decision that is in the best interest of the kids in the long term.”

She emphasized that her end goal is to ensure safe playing time, not reduce a player’s time on the field.

“What parents need to know is this: I am here to protect your child while they play,” Walker said. “My job is to keep them safe. My desire is to keep them playing, not to

withhold playing time.”

Walker’s desire to be an advocate for student athletes has led her to participate in leadership roles for a variety of statewide and nationwide organizations, including the Utah Athletic Trainers Association, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association and the National Athletic Training Association as well as the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee with the Utah High School Activities Association. Due to her efforts, a law was passed in Utah requiring athletic trainers to be licensed by the State of Utah.

All of her work at SHS has been possible only because of a collaborative effort involving teammates, parents, coaches and administration, she said.

“I have been blessed to have the support of the district, my administrators, my coaches, the parents — the community in general has been very good to me and very supportive of me, which really, at the end of the day, is why I’ve been here all these years,” Walker said. “To start and end a career at the same school is unusual because the support system is not there, but at Springville, I have had that support.”

CHEERLEADING TEAM

The Springville High School Cheerleading Team is dedicated to supporting our football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and wrestling teams while also competing in our own state and national competitions. We pride ourselves on community engagement and consistently pushing ourselves to achieve personal and team excellence. To support our journey to nationals each year, we hold two fundraisers: selling potatoes in the fall and running football concessions. We encourage everyone to purchase concessions during the games and, if you’re interested in ordering potatoes, please reach out to the head coach via email at sydney.hickman@nebo.edu.
