Welcome

Mount Timpanogos

On behalf of the Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to the heart of Utah. The valley has become one of the best places in America to visit and to raise a family. The population is estimated to be more than 500,000 and is the third-fastest growing area in the nation. With more than 60 thousand college students attending local colleges and universities, the area remains vibrant and innovative.

H

elen Keller once said that “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” This year promises to be one of adventure and challenge. Utah Valley continues to be a great place to work, play and to raise a family. The Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce has positioned itself to work for the well being of all businesses and for the benefit of the citizens of our community. We will continue to monitor government and to search out ways to improve our business climate. This year’s Resource Guide is designed to

benefit those both in the community and those who may wish to relocate here. We welcome people from all walks of life to our area and invite new businesses to seriously consider this great business location and environment. The Resource Guide is a window to understanding Utah Valley and we hope that you will keep it as a great resource on what we have to offer in one of America’s great communities. Sincerely,

S

ince the late 1980s, the Provo-Orem metro area has consistently ranked near the top of several lists detailing the best places to live, work or operate a company. It also has recently shot to the top of lists for entrepreneurs. Inc. magazine named it as a Boomtown for entrepreneurs in 2007, while Money Magazine ranked Orem in its top small cities in the United States to live and work in 2008. Nestled between Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains, Provo and Orem make up the heart of a metropolitan area that is gradually filling Utah Valley from Santaquin in the south to Lehi in the north. The valley enjoys a moderate, four-season alpine climate with low humidity, warm summer days, refreshing summer nights and winters that offer a blend of snow, crystal clear days and chilly evenings. Even more attractive than the weather is Utah Valley’s solid, values-oriented culture. With excellent schools, peaceful neighborhoods and a low crime rate, the Provo/Orem area is a great place to raise a family. Orem, which calls itself “Family City USA,” was named the 12th safest city in America in 2005 by the Morgan Quitno Press, which analyzes FBI statistics to determine the safety levels of cities across the nation. Provo also enjoys a very low incidence of crime. Until the mid-19th century, Utah Valley was the home of the Ute Indians. Fur trappers hunting beaver passed through the valley in the early 1800s, including French-Canadian trapper Etienne Provost, the man for whom Provo is named. In 1849, Mormon pioneers established the permanent

In the following years, towns sprouted all over the valley. Although agriculture dominated the valley’s economy for more than 100 years, Provo was home to the state’s first large manufacturing plant: the Provo Woolen Mills, built in 1873. In 1919, the area then known as the “Provo Bench” incorporated as the city of Orem in order to develop an irrigation system for the area. Orem grew as homesteads settled along the territorial highway (now State Street) and other major thoroughfares. The city relied primarily on agriculture until the federal government built Geneva Steel along the shore of Utah Lake to help produce steel for the war effort during World War II. Today, the Provo/Orem metro area is a thriving, growing location that offers excellent opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship while maintaining traditional values.

Community / Family Religious Country Most people who visit or relocate to Utah are very curious about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often referred to as the Mormons. The LDS Church has been the predominant religion in Utah since the state was first settled by the church’s members in the 1840s. Dozens of LDS Church meetinghouses dot the Utah County landscape. For more information about the LDS Church, visit www.lds.org. While many Utah County residents belong to the LDS Church, a wide variety of religions flourish here. St. Francis Catholic Church, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and San Andreas Catholic Church serve Orem, American Fork and Payson, respectively. Churches of many different Protestant faiths also exist in the area. In addition, Spanish Fork’s beautiful Krishna Temple contributes a major cultural influence to the valley, hosting religious and cultural ceremonies throughout the year.

Shopping Shoppers in Utah Valley have access to a mix of national and regional chain stores and local specialty shops. The chains are primarily concentrated in three malls — the Provo Towne Centre, University Mall, and The Shops at Riverwoods — and shopping centers and strip malls along main thoroughfares across the valley. Many specialty shops can be found in Provo’s downtown commercial district, and along the old Main Streets of towns around the county. In August of 2005, outdoor outfitter giant Cabela’s opened a 175,000-square-foot superstore in Lehi that features a 35,000gallon aquarium, 430 taxidermy animals, an animatronic shooting gallery and running waterfalls that feed a trout pond. For groceries, there are several options ranging from national chains and convenience stores to local independents and roadside fruit and vegetable stands where you buy directly from the producers. Farmers’ markets offer another intriguing option, with farmers gathering to sell their produce in various locations during the summer months.

Dining Utah Valley offers an eclectic variety of restaurants, with choices ranging from steakhouses, drive-ins and old-fashioned “greasy spoons” to authentic Italian, Indian and Thai cuisine. A few restaurants are concentrated in Provo’s downtown commercial district, but many are distributed through the Provo/Orem metro area. Others, such as Porter’s Place in Lehi with its Old West ambience,

or Springville’s Art City Trolley, which is literally built into an old trolley car, are found in the smaller communities surrounding Provo and Orem. For a listing of local restaurants, turn to Page 56.

Health care

Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Newborn Intensive Care Unit

If you live in Utah, it’s likely that you feel pretty good right now. After all, Utahns are some of the healthiest people in the nation. With abundant outdoor recreational opportunities and widespread access to health care, it’s no wonder that Utah consistently enjoys national recognition as a major locale for healthy living.

U

tah was named the fifth-healthiest state in the nation in the 2008 State Health Rankings report by the American Public Health Association in cooperation with the Partnership for Prevention and United Health Foundation. The entire survey can be found online at www. unitedhealthfoundation.org. The survey looks at a number of factors, from mortality rates to prevalence of smoking and binge drinking, and cardiovascular and cancer deaths to occupational fatalities. Preventive health care is popular among Utahns, as witnessed by the large number of vitamin, herbal nutrition supplement and natural skin care manufacturers in Utah County. Utah Valley offers access to a variety of alternative health systems, including chiropractic clinics, homeopathy and acupuncture. Utah Valley residents have unsurpassed opportunity for active lifestyles. In addition to fitness centers and municipal sports leagues throughout the valley, popular activities like hiking, hunting, mountain biking, SCUBA diving and rock climbing complete the scene. For more information about activities, sports and fitness, see the Recreation and Leisure section of this guide.

The hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit has been recognized by the Oxford Group for outstanding patient outcomes and for actively involving families in the care of their baby. In 2006, UVRMC added hyperbaric medicine to its list of services. The center also added a Hearing and Balance Center and expanded its Emergency Room services, doubling the ER’s size and providing it with its own imaging technology

(general X-ray and CT scanner). The hospital recently opened a new Outpatient Center tailored to patients who do not need to be admitted to the hospital. In Orem, MountainStar Healthcare’s Timpanogos Regional Hospital offers another alternative. Included in its range of services, the hospital features a recently expanded Women’s Center, an open heart surgery center and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. TRH recently added a perinatology department to provide specialized care for expectant mothers who may have complications during pregnancy. TRH opened its open heart surgery program in 2005. Timpanogos Regional Hospital was the first in the area to provide such services as the camera pill, the Bravo pH Monometry and the Lumend Frontrunner, a cardiology procedure. Today, TRH is the only hospital in Utah to offer prostate brachytherapy. It also is Utah County’s only hospital with a 64-slice CT scanner. This diagnostic tool creates 64 high-resolution anatomical images as thin as a credit card. Images are combined to form a detailed, three-dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy in much less time than with conventional multi-slice scanners. IHC’s Orem Community Hospital is a small (20-bed) facility focusing on outpatient procedures and women’s services. It is the only hospital in Utah County with one-room birthing suites, allowing women to remain in the same room for the entire childbirth experience. The hospital also features a strong same-day surgery program in addition to a pain center and Utah County’s only pediatric rehabilitation program, serving children who suffer from physical disabilities or disorders like cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. American Fork Hospital, also part of Intermountain Healthcare, serves the north side of the county. Its well-known Huntsman Intermountain Cancer Center offers radiation and chemotherapy. The hospital recently expanded its adult Intensive Care Unit and Women’s Services, where nearly 3,000 babies are delivered each year. The hospital also features a Sleep Center and is focusing on expanding its heart services. In Payson, MountainStar Healthcare’s Mountain View Hospital supports the medical needs of southern Utah County. Among its offerings are an Emergency Room, Women’s Services, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy and mental health services. Utah Valley Specialty Hospital opened in November 2006. The 40-bed hospital provides care for patients who require longer-term hospitalization (averaging 25

days or more). The facility focuses on long-term acute care, including critical care. For special cases, the world-renowned University of Utah Hospital, a pioneer and leader in the use of artificial hearts and other organ transplants, is only 45 minutes away from Utah Valley. Affiliated with the U of U Hospital is Primary Children’s Medical Center. PCMC is nationally recognized as a top pediatric facility, and serves the entire Intermountain West. Utah is a national leader in improved access to health care through the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Primary Care Network, which provide insurance to families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to purchase their own health insurance. Additional services for people without insurance include charity care through the hospitals and donated care through the Mountainlands Community Health Center in downtown Provo.

Education With a combination of economic strength, cutting-edge technology and a spectacular array of fine arts, it’s not surprising that Utah Valley provides a learning atmosphere for people of all ages. Two of the most recognizable features of the Provo/Orem metro area are large institutions of higher education – Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University. The international outreach of programs at BYU and UVU have helped place Utah Valley on the global map. Many countries worldwide are familiar with traveling performing groups from both of these schools.

Utah Valley University campus

O

ne of the largest private universities in the United States, BYU seeks to develop students of intellect and character who have the skills and the desire to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives. BYU is a private university sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it draws a mix of students from different religious backgrounds and from all over the world. Founded in 1875, it is one of the leading private undergraduate universities in the West and offers a variety of advanced degrees. BYU has received national renown for its law, engineering and business schools. The university also offers one of the nation’s leading distance education programs and hosts many forums and other events of interest to the local community. Aside from education programs, BYU’s performing arts groups provide a wide selection of performances each year. Originally a vocational school, Utah Valley University became official on July 1, 2008. It added a master’s degree in education, and a new state-of-the-art library. After 24 months of construction and three trips to the Utah State Legislature to secure funding, the library is open for campus and public use. The public can pay a yearly fee of $20 to check out books and media. In addition to continuing with its technical, trade and industrial programs as diverse as aviation science, diesel mechanics and telecommunications, UVU has traditional academic areas ranging from business and computer science to philosophy and physics. UVU also hosts many community programs, including community education and the Small Business Development Center. Due to the school’s rapid growth, it opened the Wasatch Campus in Heber City in 2003. The satellite campus currently offers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, plus bachelor degrees in elementary education, technology manage-

ment, business and nursing. In Orem, the Mountainland Applied Technology College provides vocational training both to high school students and adults. This school serves approximately 10,000 students annually through its certificate and associate degree programs. Part of the Utah System of Higher Education, MATC is one of several campuses that make up the Utah College of Applied Technology. Tuition is free for concurrently enrolled high school students, who are referred to the college through their school counselor. Students of all ages can explore their field of interest, gain needed certifications for higher-level training, advance to a higher-paying profession, or simply gain an advantage if they are entering the work force for the first time.

Families in the Provo/Orem metro area have access to excellent elementary and secondary schools, both public and private. The Alpine, Provo and Nebo school districts all emphasize top-flight academics. Technology and computers play a significant role in education from an early age, and many high school students make progress toward college degrees through advanced placement and concurrent enrollment programs. There also are several options for parents seeking a private-school education for their children and several charter schools offer an alternative as well.

Business & Economy

US Synthetic in Orem

T

he Provo/Orem metro area has a vibrant, modern business economy centered on high-tech companies and supported by a young, educated population — including more than 50,000 students at the area’s two major institutions of higher education — and fueled by the entrepreneurial spirit of its residents. Utah Valley’s business-friendly environment has consistently attracted media attention. Inc. Magazine ranked the area in the top 40 of its Boomtowns ‘07 list, which presents the nation’s best cities to do business. Provo/Orem was listed in the top 10 cities to live in for good salary growth by Payscale.com, siting rapid growth in information service industry and strong business investment in the tech sector, which should help the area ride out the slowdown in the economy in good form. In the early 1980s, Utah Valley’s entrepreneurial spirit

merged with the computer age to reap the most fundamental changes the area economy had seen since the arrival of manufacturing. WordPerfect and Novell were pioneers in the development of word processing and networking software, respectively. WordPerfect was eventually purchased by Corel and moved to Canada. Novell, a leading provider of networking software worldwide, relocated its corporate headquarters to Waltham, Mass., with a key facility remaining in Provo as one of the area’s economic anchors. Utah County boasts an exceptional infrastructure, particularly for high-tech companies, but also for traditional manufacturing and services. Its booming population continues to grow, and its young, intelligent and educated work force promises to be the most important resource for current and future businesses.

Job Search Resources Networking is the most effective method to find employment, but the following Web sites may also prove useful: www.jobs.utah.gov The Utah Department of Workforce Services publishes all of its job announcements online. Utah Valley is passionate about the arts. Lovers of culture enjoy hundreds of artistic exhibits, performances and events in the Provo/Orem metro area and throughout the surrounding valley.

any cities in the valley have an arts council or other organization devoted to promoting the arts in their communities and a wide variety of performance locations exist from intimate playhouses to large outdoor concert venues. Privately owned and community-sponsored theaters offer plays and musicals and the McKay Events Center at Utah Valley University hosts major concert events. Many musical groups, including the Utah Valley Symphony, perform at the Provo Tabernacle, a venue prized for its high-quality acoustics. Just a few minutes’ drive up Provo Canyon, Sundance resort hosts abundant activities, events and classes year-round. The valley is home to two major art museums: the Springville Museum of Art and the Brigham Young University Museum of Art. Located just a few minutes south of Provo, the Springville Museum of Art is Utah’s oldest museum for the visual fine arts. Its impressive collection, including more than 1,500 works of Utah and American art, is housed in an

attractive Spanish Colonial Revival building completed in 1937. Its annual art shows include exhibits by talented Utah artists, the annual Religious & Spiritual Art exhibition and the acclaimed Spring Salon. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, the Springville museum served as Utah Valley’s only official Cultural Olympiad venue. In Provo, the Brigham Young University Museum of Art offers a more modern ambience and temporary exhibits of a larger scope. Opened in October 1993, the museum holds a collection of more than 16,000 “objects” in a 100,000-squarefoot building. It is one of the largest museum facilities in the Intermountain West. Temporary exhibits have included shows on art from the ancient Mediterranean world, the ancient Etruscan civilization and the Imperial Tombs of China. A number of cultural and history museums also are found throughout the valley as well as smaller art galleries. BYU and UVU both offer fine arts programs and

create many opportunities for audiences to attend musicals, Shakespearean plays, dance performances and other arts events performed by talented students. In the summer, many communities produce major musical productions cast with local performers. Local orchestras and bands perform concerts throughout the year.

Cradled on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos, Sundance resort is one of Utah County’s most treasured features. The resort is best known for the annual Sundance Film Festival, considered the premier U.S. showcase for American and international independent film. The festival, held in January, attracts the film industry’s most prominent contributors including filmmakers, producers, actors and more. An audience of film lovers from every walk of life completes the scene. Films are screened in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance resort itself. Sundance offers resources for artists, art lovers and amateurs to experience artwork and improve their artistic skills. The Sundance Gallery features works of art by prestigious artists from across the country, and the Sundance Art Shack offers a range of workshops, from jewelry- and pottery-making to photography, painting and drawing classes. Resident artists tailor instruction to each individual’s skill level. During the summer, films, musical and theatrical performances are held in the natural outdoor amphitheater. There are all sorts of trails to explore along the Alpine Loop.

Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park This former military post was home to America’s largest concentration of troops from 1858 to 1861, when 3,500 troops were sent to suppress the so-called “Mormon rebellion.” Of the camp’s many buildings, only a cemetery and commissary building remain. The nearby Stagecoach Inn, once an overnight stop on the historic overland stage and Pony Express route, has been restored with original period furnishings. The park is located in the town of Fairfield, 25 miles southwest of Lehi on State Route 73. 18035 W. 1540 North Fairfield, UT 84013 (801) 768-8932 www.stateparks.utah.gov/park/index.php?id=CFSP

The resort also features Alpine skiing trails and 15 kilometers of groomed Nordic skiing trails. For more information call 1-800-892-1600 or visit: www.sundanceresort.com.

Bridal Veil Falls Four miles up Provo Canyon along US Highway 189, this double cataract waterfall plunges more than 607 feet and can be seen from the roadway. The falls are a favorite starting spot for summer biking and hiking trips into the canyon. In the winter, an icefall known as the Stairway to Heaven forms just to the right of the falls, attracting ice climbers from all over the world.

rovo and Orem both offer a variety of housing options, from condominiums and townhomes to older, mature neighborhoods and upscale developments. As land becomes scarcer for residential development in the Provo/Orem area, much of the growth is happening in the smaller surrounding communities. The cities of Lehi and Pleasant Grove, both located on the northern end of Utah Valley, are experiencing aggressive growth. The former frontier town of Lehi has become a popular destination for commuters because of its convenient location about halfway between Provo/Orem and Salt Lake City. Lehi also is experiencing major retail and commercial development. Utah was the nation’s fastest-growing state in 2008. The state’s population climbed by 2.5 percent from July 2007 to July 2008, according to new population estimates from the Census Bureau. West of Lehi, planned communities Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs offer affordable homes and distinctive lifestyles. Northern cities such as American Fork, Alpine and Highland also are home to many attractive new housing developments. In the south end of the county, Spanish Fork, Payson, Salem and Santaquin offer a more rural environment with

affordable real estate prices and convenient access to shopping. The Utah County Association of Realtors says the future looks bright for 2009. Brooke Curnow, communications director for the association, says they have a lot of inventory and foresee good business as the year goes on. “Rates are lower than they have ever been before,” Curnow said, speaking of mortgage loan rates. With lots of inventory, she said you could call it a buyers market, and the association anticipates getting busier and busier throughout the year.

The mission of No More Homeless Pets in Utah (NMHPU) is to end the euthanasia of homeless dogs and cats statewide and promote humane alternatives for feral cats. No More Homeless Pets in Utah began in July 2000 and is a fully independent, non-profit 501c3 organization. NMHPU fulfills its mission by increasing the numbers of spay/neuter surgeries and adoptions throughout the state as well as providing feral cat services. NMHPU also collaborates with other Utah shelters, rescue groups, veterinarians, and local governments all working to save animal lives. Our Utah County Spay/ Neuter Clinic which opened in February of 2007, is slated for 6,500 spay/neuter surgeries in 2009.
