Still some summer left to enjoy
W
ell, it’s that time of year again. The weather is cooling off, the leaves are beginning to change and children are h e a d e d ZACH back to STICH Banter school. The final and Boxscores month of summer is always bitter sweet. There is so much stuff that you can still enjoy, but you know that in a few short months there will be white stuff on the
ground and we will once again be bundled up in our winter coats, warming up our cars and grabbing the ice scrapper. Last summer, I vowed to myself that I would make the most of next summer (as I squandered it). Well, that didn’t happen and now I am staring down the final fews weeks looking at ways to enjoy it. With work and play getting in the way, I see myself making the same promise for the summer of 2020 that I did for 2019. But on a positive note, there is still plenty of time to spend weekends with
tunities are in season. It keeps the spice of summer in the air. I really enjoy late summer grilling. The weather cools down in the evening, allowing you to not sweat while flipping burgers, grilling hot dogs or basting ribs. It also makes it much more enjoyable for family as everyone wants to be outside taking in the 70-degree weather. In this edition of Lakes DAILY JOURNAL Journal, you will read OUT AND ABOUT: There are still plenty of adventures to have in the about people that haven’t final weeks of summer. squandered their summers family members, grill out the area. OTTER TAIL COUNTY REAL ESTATE SALES By Alan Olson, Broker The Fergus Falls real estate market is hot this year with an increase in sales of 23% so far. There is only a 2.4-month supply of homes for sale, a historically low number. Real estate sales in the rest of Otter Tail County are down 15% this year. The reason being there is only a 5.6-month supply of homes for sale, which is 10% down from 2018. Although several of us larger real estate firms are up in sales by as much as 40%, it appears that the larger firms with the most listings, are also having the most sales. Home sale prices have increased 7% which is 2.5% more than all of last year. My advice for buyers and sellers is to choose an agent that knows the local market and trends.

NATURAL INSPIRATION Larson finds success in artwork By Brian Hansel Lakes Journal
Nicole Larson lives in two worlds that complement one another very well - hunting and art. The Battle Lake artist and owner of Larson Wildlife Art has proved it over the last 11 years by building a healthy business for herself with Facebook.
Nicole was on a hunting trip one day when a companion found a wild turkey feather, picked it up and asked her if she could paint on it. The artist in Larson looked at the painting query as a challenge. The big game birds have large feathers and there is a market for the SEE ARTIST PAGE 6

iridescent feathers alone. “They make a perfect canvas,” Larson said, describing her feathered painting surface. Coming up with feathers for her work has never been a problem. For several years Nicole and her husband, Brent, put much of their time into a hunting and fishing show on Dream TV. “I shoot so many turkeys a year and I got tired of throwing them away,” Larson laughed. While her first effort to paint an image on a turkey feather fell far short of her standards, the patience that makes a good sportsman, or sportswoman, saw her through. She is the first to say that painting on the feathers of turkeys and pheasants is not for everyone. “It takes a lot of practice,” Larson said. Working on custom orders and being a mom keeps Larson hopping. “I do a lot of custom orders, I have a waiting list,” Larson said. “I’m a busy girl.” Larson grew up in east-central Minnesota but the TV show she and her husband hosted kept bringing them up to this area. Finally, they decided to stop running back and forth so they bought an old farm near Battle Lake and fixed it up. As someone who has dabbled in art since childhood, the self-taught artist has tackled all kinds of feathered painting projects. “I have done everything from comSUBMITTED bines to eagles to cars and barns,” Larson WILDLIFE ARTWORK: Battle Lake artist Nicole Larson showcases some of her artwork. record in calls for service before the year is out. “We envisioned there would be some uptick in responses as we continued to grow in the fire service,” the Fergus Falls fire chief said. “We want to be a little more proactive in our responses and have the dispatch center page us out. If the ambulance goes to a rollover because there are injuries that the fire department is paged out as well.” As of Aug. 7 the fire department had answered 203 calls. By the end of the year Muchow is anticipating it being in the 300 range. The previous high was
260 calls for service. While the number of firefighting calls they have answered is averaging just over three a month, the other types of calls they handle have seen increases. They have answered 22 rescue and emergency medical calls as opposed to 18 for all of 2018. They have been out on 37 hazardous-condition calls already compared with 39 in all of 2018. Service calls are up to 20 after 18 in 2018. They are averaging almost seven alarms a month compared to six last year. Due to some heavy weather that hit Fergus Falls in July they have already been paged to eight severe-weather calls. Last year they were paged out on only one severe weather call.
“We have a trending upward of the rescue category but I don’t know if I’d call it a spike but it’s just more of each one,” Muchow said. There are presently three full-time firefighters in the department with another 42 paid on call. Balancing the load being put on his men is important to Muchow because it is important for the morale of his firefighters. Many have families and like many fathers, their families come first with them. If severe weather is predicted the Fergus Falls Fire Department wants to be ready. “Our staffing model has changed a little bit in the last year and a half,” Muchow said. “We page in a smaller group, we call it a duty crew.

They will come in and staff the station so that if something happens they are here. This summer we have done it twice. The storm we had in June resulted in six or seven calls immediately following the storm. In this last go around we had 15 or 16 calls for service that came in within two hours.” From the perspective of a fire chief, Muchow considers Fergus Falls to be a pretty safe place. There are some older homes in the city and there are hazards that naturally go along with them. Fire inspections of city businesses are in place to make sure the trend in significant fires continues to spiral downward. “Overall we do feel the community takes a pretty proactive approach,” Muchow said. Accidents on the highway and freeway are another type of emergency. While law enforcement and ambulance personnel are commonly called out the num-

call comes in rather than waiting for police or ambulance personnel to call for their help in a roadside crash. “The other area we are growing in is for us to be that

The importance of roof maintenance For Lakes Journal
Roofs get more abuse from the elements than any other part of a building, and preventative maintenance is a key element for saving money on your roof by providing a longer service life. It’s important to inspect a roof’s surface after any severe storm or day of excessive winds. At least 95% of leaks occur at points of flashing.
Clean all debris from the surface of the roof
This includes debris that has gathered behind HVAC units, pipes and pitch pans, and any other roof penetrations. Debris has a tendency to hold water, and water will expedite roof deterioration, especially if the roof is asphalt based. If the roof has gravel surfacing and there are some bare spots pres-
ent, clean the area thoroughly using a broom and a wire brush if necessary. Be sure to remove all loose dirt generated from brushing and sweeping. Blow on the area if need be. Spread a thin layer of asphalt roof cement over the bare area about 1/8 inch thick. Gather some lose gravel from other areas of the roof and embed it in the roof cement.
to blow-offs of roofing material, leaks and reduced puncture resistance. Flashing protests the most vulnerable part of the roof; it protects and provides a waterproof barrier between the actual roof’s material and the structure beneath. If you find your flashing is in need of repair, it’s best to do it immediately; if you wait- it can create more problems.
Check all flashings
Make sure that the downspouts are draining properly by water testing them. Trim back any overhanging tree branches. Check all caulking and sealants on flashings and copings. Scrape and remove any caulking that is weather cracked and damaged. Clean the area thoroughly. Use a wire brush if necessary. Reapply a polyurethane caulking.
Make sure that the flashings are not deteriorated and there are no holes in them. Routine inspections need to be performed on your roofing and your flashings. Lots of homeowners fail to properly check their flashing. But flashing that is poorly attached due to wind and poor weather conditions can cause open seams and laps. This can lead

Trolling Time! Late summer into fall is when I break out my walleye trolling gear in earnest! Some of the lakes that I fish have walleye populations that leave classic structure at this time and spend time in the lake basins out away from classic walleye structure. These fish feed on bugs and insects hatching off the lake bottoms and also feed on the smaller baitfish like perch and other panfish drawn to the hatches as well. Basin walleyes are often scattered about in pods of two or three fish and seem
to roam somewhat aimlessly. Because of their wandering nature and lack of schooling behavior, a great way to contact and catch these fish is by trolling with crankbaits. Shad-style crankbaits are top walleye producers, but a limitation they have is that they don’t typically dive deep enough to get in the “fish zone” where summer basin walleyes live. For that reason, leadcore line, which takes shallower running baits deeper than they normally dive, is utilized effectively at this time.
Leadcore line is segmented by color with, depending on the particular leadcore used, one color of line often taking a bait around 5-7 feet down in the water column at around 1.8 – 2.2 mph, an often productive trolling speed. By monitoring how many colors are let out and when bottom or weeds are contacted or, better yet, when a fish is caught, an angler can determine through a bit of trial and error how much line to let out to keep baits SUBMITTED in the fish zone. troll, the fish seem to be within a few feet of bottom but I have had several days where more fish were seen on my depth finder holding “high in the water column. Those days, adjusting the running depths of baits accordingly has been the key to success for catching those high riders! Regardless where in the water column the walleyes are, my favorite walleye producing crankbaits the last couple years have far and away been Lucky Shads from the Walleye Elite series. These baits have actions walleyes love, and they are available in a variety of colors that mimic the baits walleyes feed on and, are also productive in various water colors. My favorite
color patterns are yellow perch and crystal shad with pink belly, though as always it pays to experiment from day to day on any given body of water to determine the “color of the day. In addition to choosing the right bait and color and getting it to run in the appropriate depth zones, another key for me has been the use of planer boards. Planer boards allow anglers to spread lines to cover a much wider section of the lake basin and, they help get baits out away from the boat to avoid spooking walleyes in clear water. Off Shore’s OR12 boards run flawlessly even in rough water and, when equipped with optional Tattle Flags, the angler knows when a light
biting fish hits or, alerts the angler when a weed has fouled the bait. If your goal is lots of bites from fish during late summer, consider breaking out the “cranks, lead and boards and heading to the basin of your favorite walleye lake. Following some of the suggestions just offered can hopefully help you find late summer fun of the walleye variety! As always, good luck on the water and remember to include a youngster in your outdoors adventures!
