Lakes country provides rest, relaxation, fun A

re you ready to get out on the lake? Are you ready to experience fun? Are you looking for a place to relax, have some food, a beverage and get away for awhile? Well, if you are looking for any of these and more, lakes country is the place to be in 2019. The winter was not nice to folks here in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Just when we thought we were turning a corner to spring, a snowstorm would wipe away all the ground we gained. Blizzard after blizzard has put us in a bit of a funk and yearning to get back outdoors and enjoy the place that we call home. Good news! May has been the month that many of us have asked for. Temperatures are back up in the 70s, lakes are clear of ice and

Banter and Boxscores By Zach Stich

birds are chirping. Time to get back out there and have fun! When I travel, I know one of the first things that I look for is a place with solid accommodations, in a spot that is also great to take time out at. Whether you are in a cabin or a tent, lakes country has something for the outdoorsmen or city person. Check out pages 28-29 for great resort and campground options. One of the many aspects of

lakes country that brings tourists and locals alike to different towns in the area are the festivals. Fergus Falls SummerFest, Erhard Fourth of July Parade, Perham Turtle Fest, Vining’s Watermelon Days, Pelican Fest in Pelican Rapids and Shop Move ‘N Groove in Fergus Falls are just a few of the festivals that you can enjoy throughout the summer months. Many of these festivals provide a parade for the whole family to enjoy. If you are looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, a cold beverage or something sweet, check out our “Dining Out” guide on pages 26-27. I know when I am in a new place I always look to try some of the local fare. Some of the places that have community members and their friends talking are Union Pizza & Brew, Socials Bar & Grill,

Dining Car 423 & Steel Wheels, Battle Lake Oasis, Otter Supper Club, Shoreline , Old Homestead Cafe, Ye Olde Schoolhouse, The Rusty Nail, Fiesta Brava, The Cactus, Spanky’s Stone Hearth and Nootzi’s on Main Cafe. If you are looking for really good food that is familiar, Taco John’s, Dairy Queen, Perkins and VFW Post 612 are great options for a great meal. Another hidden gem of the area is the strong arts community. Read about some of the offerings of A Center for the Arts in Fergus Falls. The city theater provides a wide range of shows throughout the year with interesting offers in the summer. When the weather is hot, sometimes the best spot to be is on a lake or river. Anglers couldn’t agree with you more. In this edi-

tion of the Resorter, you can read about Ben’s Bait — a third-generation business in Battle Lake that provides anglers with the right bait to pull in whatever fish they are after. On Page 7, if you are willing to get competitive, their is a list of fishing tournaments in the area through the upcoming months. But if you are looking for something with a little bit more excitement on a Friday night, I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls can provide just the right amount of racing and flag waving. The speedway is a great place to spend a Friday night as hours of racing entertainment and fun are right around the next left turn. And if none of this entices, a quiet day next to the lake or enjoying one of the many parks in the area may be just what you need.

The season began May 17 with a regular race night featuring the usual suspects — WISSOTA Late Models, WISSOTA Modifieds, Limited Late Model, WISSOTA Street Stocks, Short Trackers and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. The racing groups bring plenty of action to the track and make those in the stands get on their feet. Last season brought drivers from all over as the track hosted the WISSOTA 100 in September. This

year, the racing extravaganza returns Sept. 11-14 and will look to accommodate hundreds of drivers that look to hit the 3/8 mile dirt track. But the WISSOTA 100 isn’t the only thing that should get race fans to the track. On June 14, the track will host a meet and greet with drivers, while June 21 will have the track’s annual King of the Dirt tournament. Moving into July, their are several special nights including

“So where are the fish biting?” Bennett Stich probably hears that oft-repeated question in his sleep but he knows it comes with the territory. It is also good for business. Nine years after he joined his dad, Craig, in taking over Ben’s Bait from his grandpa Ben and grandma Josie Stich, the third-generation bait dealer is still pulling away the shroud of mystery for visiting anglers. “The main thing is the particular species they want to target,” Bennett said. “At that point, it narrows it down to certain, specific lakes in our area (certain lakes have certain species and others do not) and at that point, it's what kind of bait do they want to use and your depth levels and structures in that particular lake.” Bennett may be giving out the best advice he has but he is not infallible. Thankfully, most of his customers understand that. “It’s fishing,” Bennett said. “There is no real guarantee.” Ben’s Bait has been a fixture of the Battle Lake community since 1970. Located at the crossroad of State Highways 78 and 210 in the heart of Otter Tail County’s lakes region, the business is ideally suited to serve anglers. From the front door of Ben’s Bait, you can find

BRIAN HANSEL | DAILY JOURNAL

FAMILY BUSINESS: Bennett Stich is a third-generation bait dealer at Ben’s Bait in Battle Lake. The Stich family has been supplying bait for visiting and area anglers for decades. fishing close by in every direction. You will not get an argument from Bennett when you describe the first days of the Minnesota fishing season as “crazy.” “On weekends we have people lined up outside the door for licenses or bait,” Stich said. With three-quarters of their annual business carried out during the spring and summer months, Ben’s Bait has to be cranked up and ready by the local walleye-northern fishing opener. That means the bait tanks have to be brimming with minnows and their refrig-

eration units teeming with leeches, nightcrawlers and worms. The business raises its own sucker, golden shiner, crappie and fathead minnows. They used to trap their own leeches as well but they now buy their leech stock. Craig is the man who acquires their stock of baits. In addition to the physical demands of the bait business, there are long hours to be kept. Ben’s Bait keeps a 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. schedule seven days a week. To meet the demands of the business Ben’s Bait usually keeps 10 to 12 people on staff. Bait and tackle are not the only items sold at Ben’s Bait.

You can pick up clothing and moccasins and Ice Castle Fish Houses - which are sold year-around because of their versatility. Winter anglers might want them for ice fishing shelters but during the warm weather months, many customers are interested in the RV editions that Ice Castle markets and they use them as mobile living quarters. Bennett spends a lot of his time making things at the business run smooth. “You are at the beck and call," Bennett said. "Your computers go down, we need more of this or more of that, it is the same in any small business.”

Nature Explorations: Wild Wednesday Junior Naturalist Programs June 12 and 26; July 10 and 24 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Meet near the picnic tables by the beach at Molly Stark Lake for a kids and family nature program. Archery in the Park June 22 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 20 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The sport of shooting arrows has been around for thousands of years. First humans used archery as a way to hunt animals and later as a way to com-

pete against each other. Archery is an activity that people from all walks of life and almost every size and ability can participate and have fun. This program covers the basics of archery (safety, proper care of the equipment and how to use a bow). Participants will be able to practice their new skills on the range by taking a turn shooting arrows at targets. Some come to learn a new lifelong skill. All equipment is provided and no personal or outside equipment will be allowed on the range. Must be 8 years and older. Adult must accompany younger participants. Open shoot, come during the class and get to shoot. Amount of shooting time varies on number of participants. The program is held outside, so dress appropriately. Meet at the Molly Stark Picnic Shelter.

s on i t c a r tt A e d i s d a Ro Whether you are a longtime resident of lakes country, or just stopping in for a week — there are a significant amount of sights to see. A common type of landmark throughout the area are statues, figures and sculptures based around a historical figure, military tribute or an animal. They mostly sit on the main stretch of their respective towns or at the entrance to signify something that stands out about their heritage. Here’s a rundown of a few of them:

STAVANGER LUTHERAN CHURCH An Independent Lutheran Church

LARGEST PELICAN This towering pelican sits near Main Street in downtown Pelican Rapids, standing at the base of the Mill Pond dam on the Pelican River. The pelican stands at 15 1/2 feet tall and was built in 1957. The dam underneath the pelican has been approved funding for repairs and new bricks that are being installed this summer.

OTTO THE OTTER Staying with the oversized animal theme, you’ll find the world’s largest otter standing in Fergus Falls at Grotto Park, looking out over the lake. Named Otto the statue is 40 feet long and is made of concrete-covered metal.

s ion t c a r tt A e id s d Roa ASHBY COOT Standing 10 feet tall, this large coot represents the largest Ashby area sportsmen club, Coot Unlimited. The coot statue is just outside of Ashby on State Highway 78. FERGUS GOOSE In addition to the otter, Fergus Falls is also home to the world’s largest Canada Goose. It’s located next to the Otter Tail County Historical museum along Lincoln Avenue.

PHELPS FLOUR MILL The Phelps Mill County Park is open from May until the end of October. The mill joined the ranks on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Construction was completed on the mill in 1889. It was a symbol of old rural life and the history of milling in rural Minnesota.

ROTHSAY’S PRAIRIE CHICKEN The large chicken statue is fitting for Rothsay, which was dubbed the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” in 1975. The statue is 13-feet-by-18-feet and weighs in at 9,000 pounds. It has been around since 1976.

VINING SCULPTURE GARDEN This display exhibits the sculpture art of Ken Nyberg. His pieces include a cup of coffee, an elephant, Bigfoot and an astronaut, to honor Nyberg’s daughter, Karen, who is an astronaut.

THE WAHPETON CATFISH Just a hop across the Red River, you’ll find the world’s largest catfish statue in Wahpeton. Though not in Otter Tail County or even Minnesota, it still takes home a largest creature title, weighing in at 5,000 pounds. “Wahpper” is also 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, and made of fiberglass. It was built to call attention to the excellent catfishing there. FRAZEE TURKEY This massive statue Frazee, the “Turkey capital of the world,” is bronze, weighs more than 5,000 pounds and is more than 20 feet tall. Big Tom has between 3,000 and 4,000 fiberglass feathers, which took D.W.O. Fiberglass Co. more than 2,000 hours to complete. This new Big Tom statue first arrived in August 1998, after the older paper mache version burned down.

VERGAS LOON The world’s largest loon can be found in Vergas, overlooking Long Lake. It was built in the early 1960s, with money from the Vergas Fire Department. The 20-foot-tall loon was dedicated to a deceased town postmaster. ORWELL DAM Just southwest of Fergus Falls, the dam was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953. It stands at 60-feet high and 1,355 feet at its crest. DALTON THRESHING GROUNDS The threshing grounds are located along the Central Lakes Trail. The Dalton Threshing Show has been around since 1957, the weekend before Labor Day weekend. Many steam engines operate throughout the grounds.

ROTHSAY VETERANS MEMORIAL This commemorative plot at 101 Otter Tail County Highway 11 consists of a plaque on a stand, two benches and lights that will shine on the Minnesota state flag, American flag and POW/MIA flag. The idea for the plot started from 17-year-old Underwood Eagle Scout Austin Link who garnered support from the Rothsay City Council and other veteran organizations. They helped build the monument in August 2015. GRANT COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL A four-year development process resulted in this monument opening on July 2, 2015. The memorial features about 600 engraved bricks making up two black granite display cases, seven benches, granite plaques remembering soldiers and flags from various veteran organizations in the area. The bricks are purchased to honor soldiers and the money is donated to the organization to recognize the work done by veterans and veterans support groups. Each brick commemorates a Grant County vet, VFW Posts or other organizations that donated a brick to the memorial. The monument is located in front of Prairie Ridge Hospital at 1411 State Highway 79 in Elbow Lake.

MINNESOTA WOMAN MONUMENT Just 3 miles north of Pelican Rapids on U.S. Highway 59, this monument stands on the site of the discovery of “The Minnesota Woman.” The skeletal remains of a woman believed to be as much as 20,000 years old were found in the 1930s while the highway was under construction. There is now a group in Pelican Rapids called the Minnesota Glacial Women Organization that are actively trying to get more educational materials together in the town to teach people about the history of the woman.

“Oliver Twist.” The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike. The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and

pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.
