Summer is about to pick back up

W

ell, 2020 has been quite a year so far. But the best part about this year is that we are finally able to get back out there and enjoy the lakes area. This year’s Resorter is coming out a few months later. I don’t want to sit and dwell on the current pandemic but many resorts and activities were put on hold until the state removed or loosen the restrictions that were established. One of the few things that haven’t been canceled is the outdoor fun that you can have. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz encouraged citizens of the state to get out there and enjoy hiking, biking and fishing. Luckily for locals and visitors to the area, Otter Tail County and

Banter and Boxscores By Zach Stich

its neighbors specialize in just such things. If you are looking to hit the links in the area, turn the Resorter to pages 6-8. These area golf courses offer a variety of different ways to play including 9-, 14- and 18-hole options. While they may not be the only courses in the area, they are some of the area’s best. With several area festivals and events being canceled, it may

seem like there are limited activities for children and families. The Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton can provide the entertainment as they have over 200 animals representing 70 species from six continents. They have also added new animals to the zoo including cheetahs. Check out what the zoo has to offer on Page 9. If you are looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, a cold beverage, a place to shop or something sweet, check out our local directory on pages 25-27. I know when I am in a new place I always look to try some of the local fare. While state restrictions are loosening up, enjoy places like ABC Brewing Ashby or Battle Lake, or why not stop at Nootzi’s on Main in Dent? If you are looking for a little

piece and quiet or just a great place to camp, check out the county’s two state parks — Glendalough and Maplewood. Both parks offer a variety of things to do including hiking, swimming, camping and more. Turn to page 16 to find out what the parks have to offer. If you want to get a look at the cities and towns in the area, what can be better than a trail? The Central Lakes State Trail provides a paved path through the lakes area for bikers, runners or walkers to get out and enjoy the scenery. If you are new to the area or just want to visit something big, check out our roadside attractions on pages 18-21. Being a Fergus Falls resident, Otto the Otter is con-

stantly standing watch over Adams Park, while the Prairie Chicken in Rothsay adds some color to the community. Don’t forget that there are several veterans memorials in and around the county. Lastly, if you don’t have a place to stay or want to try something different check out a few of the resorts in the area. Each have several pros, whether they are close or far away from town, great fishing or relaxing summer life, there is something for everyone. While 2020 may have not started out on a good note, why not finish it on one and enjoy your time in lakes country. Zach Stich is the managing editor of Resorter and Fergus Falls Daily Journal.

RENTING SUMMER ACTIVITIES Battle Lake’s Galloping Goose Rentals provides summer fun By Johanna Armstrong Resorter

Galloping Goose Rentals is open and ready to offer a number of fun activities for visitors to Battle Lake and Glendalough State Park. From tandem bicycles to kayaks, recumbent bikes to row boats, Galloping Goose has something for all ages and abilities. The two locations opened about six weeks late this year due to COVID-19. They normally set up shop by May 1 but weren’t able to until June 13. There have also been some changes in procedures as precautionary measures to keep customers and staff safe. “We aren’t able to do hourly rentals of certain things like paddle boards and our pedal boats. The reason for that is the time it takes to sanitize all of the equipment between uses, so we still offer a half-day rental,” says Kurt Maethner, co-owner of Galloping Goose alongside Casey Love. Rented boats need to be tagged so that when it’s returned employees know it cannot be rented out again until it’s sanitized. All surfaces that come into contact with customers need to be cleaned in between renters and there’s a limit to

the number of people allowed in the store at a time. As a result, the turnaround time between some items is slower than it was in years past. “We are encouraging everybody that comes out to use the park or use our services, if they can bring their own flotation devices or life jackets, that helps a lot just because of the time it takes to dry them and sanitize them. Also bike helmets, if somebody can bring their own bike helmet when they’re coming to the park, that’s great,” says Maethner. Galloping Goose is following requirements from the CDC and the DNR. “We still have everything available but the sanitation process kind of hinders the quick turnaround that we had last year with those items.” June hours were affected but by July 1 the Goose Nest inside Glendalough State Park will be open seven days a week. There are still options to self-pay if the store is closed, though, but customers will need to take responsibility for tagging what they rent. “When people fill out their form there are instructions there to take an orange tag, tag each piece of equipment that they use. Everything that’s locked up out there they have to call one of the owners to get a code in order to unlock it, for instance a paddle board, a tandem kayak or bike, so when they’re calling us we’re reiterating the fact that they need to put a tag on what they use,”

Maethner said. “We have different return areas, also, so when you’re done with something there’s a new return area for both bikes and some of the watercraft that will help separate the used, dirty from the clean equipment.” Some of the most popular rentals at Galloping Goose include kayaks for water and surreys for land. “The surrey, if you don’t know, it’s really hard to describe what a surrey is, it’s kind of like a little car with pedals, it’s got a covered roof on it. With a bigger surrey you can have six passengers and four people pedal … the small surrey holds three people and two people pedal,” says Maethner. “It’s a good workout, a lot of people will take the 6- mile loop in the park with the surreys, they have a lot of fun with that, and those are still available hourly.” Something Maethner thinks more people should try are the hydrobikes. “That’s where you’re pedaling on water and you’re elevated so you can see down into the water, it’s like a bike on pontoons,” he says. “We do have two of those available at the park, so it’s a good couples activity, if you have a calm day you can really see down into the water quite a bit, as clear as everything is.” Galloping Goose Rentals is located on Main Street in downtown Battle Lake at the beginning of the Glendalough trail and the Goose Nest is located inside Glendalough State Park.

GOLF A POPULAR WAY TO BEAT THE SUMMER BLUES By Brian Hansel Resorter

When going on vacation or relaxing in the lakes area, people want to get outdoors and see the sights. Where can we shop? Where can we eat? What are some fun activities that we can do? But there is also a group of people that find competitiveness or mild recreation as a way of relaxing. For those people, a trip to the nearest 9-, 14- or 18-hole golf course may be just the remedy. With many recreation options either being canceled or limited, hitting the links may be just what those looking for summer sport will enjoy. Here a few courses that you can take a swing at this summer.

Overcoming the restrictions placed on them by the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge this summer for director of golf Scott Swenson. Fergus Falls’ Pebble Lake Golf Course has benefited from “perfect spring weather” according to Swenson and golfers have been taking advantage of it. Swenson estimated that between 800 and 1,000 golfers have been playing the 18-hole championship course each week. Phase 3 of the state’s COVID-19 reopening plan has given the club a boost. The par-72 course saw 189 golfers turn out June 12, just two days after the club’s bar and restaurant were allowed to open. Swenson pointed out that indoor bar service has been restricted to 50% of its normal capacity but that the club’s

Balmoral Anyone landing in the exact middle of Otter Tail County would find themselves in the neighborhood of Balmoral. The 59-year-old, family-owned course is directly across the road from the largest lake in the county - Otter Tail - and right in the heart of vacation country. “We’ve been very busy, we have the advantage of the lakes,” PGA pro and owner John Young said. “We get summer residents and people here on vacation.” New tee boxes have been added to the course this year for women and senior players. Balmoral’s mature oaks are the defining characteristic of the 6,100, par-72 course.

Lida Greens Joe and Dave Hilber are second and third-generation owners of the 14-hole course on the southwest shore of Lake Lida. Like other courses in the area, the Lida Greens ownership is wrestling with COVID-19. In Lida Green’s case, it has to do with maintaining tradition. “This is the 25th year we’ve been doing the Lake Lida Juniorw Tournament,” said Joe Hilber, who would very much like to keep the tradition going. Hilber’s parents opened the course in 1984. When Joe retired from business 10 years later,

they asked him to join them. A few years ago his son, Dave, an eye doctor in Fergus Falls, took over the groundskeeping duties from his father, who concentrates now on the bookkeeping. Lida Greens is catering to many residents and tourists but the coronavirus threat has changed the golfing habits of Lida Green’s customers. Instead of steady play all week the heaviest use of the course has been on the weekends. “We’ve had some pretty good weekends but the players we are seeing are more sensitive to weather,” Hilber said. The first nine holes of the course are a par 30. Anyone playing all 14 holes can make part with a round of 48. The last five holes on the course are definitely most challenging. “The younger folks like the back five,” Hilber said.

Tipsinah Mounds There is a new mode of travel at Tipsinah Mounds this year - Finn Cycles. A golfer can sit on a golf cart while his partner drives but Finn Cycles are a different animal. They seat one and look very much like a scooter with a golf bag and a golfer aboard. Tipsinah has eight of the cycles along with 56 golf carts. They cater to a variety of players - some local and others visiting the area as tourists. The 18-hole course located east of Elbow Lake near the shores of Pomme de Terre Lake opened as a nine-hole layout in 1982. The course expanded to 18 holes in the late ‘90s. Tipsinah is a par 70. Most golfers play the white tees according to Merrick, which demands they cover 6,066 yards of turf.

beverage cart has been cruising the course. Swenson is also pleased that Pebble Lake will be hosting one wedding and two wedding receptions this summer. “We’re able to hold gatherings of 250 people outside,” Swenson said. Pebble Lake has 32 carts for rent. They are all equipped with GPS and Bluetooth.

The many grassy mounds that can be found on the course provide challenges for golfers on every hole. “They are modeled after (Native American) burial sites that are close to here,” said Tipsinah Mounds Pro Shop employee Katie Merrick. Tonya Nelson is the manager of the course and memberships are up considerably. “Memberships are way up this year because it’s something you can do outside,” Merrick said. This year’s Member-Guest Tournament will be named in honor of Dale Champ, one of the founders of the public course.

Stalker Lake A par-35, 2,800 yard course on the south shore of Stalker Lake is busy this summer. The nine holes of Stalker Lake start at 15786 Golf Course Road, 5 miles east of Dalton. Tee times are required to play the busy course which also features an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar, presently operating at 50% capacity. Owner Sheri Swonger said COVID-19 has made it a challenge lining up staff but the restaurant is able to operate at 50% capacity.

Chahinkapa Zoo presents variety of animals, options for visitors By Zach Stich Resorter

NEW SPOTS: One of the new animals at Chahinkapa Zoo (1004 RJ Hughes Dr.) in Wahpeton are the cheetahs (above). Zoo director Kathy Diekman is excited to be open for another season and there will be much in store for visitors.

For most people in the area, seeing wildlife isn’t hard. A lot of locals can see deer, fox and other furry animals, while also finding turtles, snakes and frogs. But can you see a zebra? What about a tiger? If you are looking locally you will be hard pressed unless you swing over to the Chahinkapa Zoo

in Wahpeton. The zoo has over 200 animals representing 70 species and six continents. They also offer classes for all ages, behind-the-scenes encounters and special events. The 29-acre facility is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission rates are $11.25 for adults, military and seniors (62 and over) $10.25, children SEE ZOO PAGE 10

Zoo director Kathy Diekman is excited for visitors to see the new additions to the zoo, as well as the variety of animals that call the facility home. While visiting the zoo can be fun, there are also other options for those looking to get up close and personal with animals. One of the many close encounters includes the zoo’s loveable orangutan — Tal. “Time with Tal” allows visitors to get close to the majestic orangutan, while “Bedtime with Tal” allows guests to help zookeepers get Tal ready for his evening meal and bedtime story. “Walk-a-bout with Roos” gives visitors the opportunity to hand feed the zoo’s red kangaroos and learn about joey development and life in the outback. If you are looking for something a little more four-legged, “Rhino Encounter with Gunner and Gideon,” the zoo’s white rhinos, may just be the thing for you. Learn about their conservation and

Want to peek behind the curtain? The zoo also offers two options that give visitors an idea of what it is like to work at Chahinkapa Zoo. “Keep for a Day” allows one or two people to follow the zoo’s keeper and learn about the species at the zoo, what it takes to keep them healthy and flourishing, preparing diets, enrichment and veterinary maintenance. More interested in the entire zoo experience, then do “Behind the Scenes with the Zoo Director and Animal Curator.” In this unique experience, you can see exactly what goes on at Chahinkapa. There are also several upgrades including a four-course meal with wine pairings and a spirits safari that includes adult beverages and appetizers. Check chahinkapazoo.org/behind-thescenes for prices and available options. If you are looking for something specific for the kids, check out the zoo’s classes. Classes are available for three different age ranges ( 2-4, 5-8 and 9 and up). Call ahead

or email education@chahinkapazoo.org for registration and questions. There are also several membership options available for zoogoers. This ranges from an individual membership all the way to the director’s gold membership. “We have something for everyone,” Diekman added. For prices and options, visit chahinkapazoo.org/memberships. Although the zoo has hosted several events this year, one that they are really looking forward to is the “BW Cruisers and Coffee” event on July 25. The zoo will host the classic car club from 10 a.m. to noon for the first time, which Diekman hopes can be a regular staple in the coming years. With the continued safety protocols put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, the zoo has adopted a theme of “We are ready when you are.” “We want everyone to feel comfortable when they come to the zoo.” With the zoo opening May 9, later than usual, Diekman has also stated that the Chahinkapa will be open later than in prior years.

1992 and over the next 12 years, it was cleared of railroad trappings and paved with asphalt at a cost of $3.2 million. Along its 55-mile route, the trail touches the communities of Fergus Falls, Dalton, Ashby, Melby, Evansville, Brandon, Garfield, Alexandria, Nelson and Osakis in the counties of Otter Tail, Grant and Douglas. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail in the spring, summer and autumn making the trail a haven for walkers, runners, bikers, rollerbladers, roller skiers and wheelchairs. Once the snow flies the trail becomes a route for snowmobile traffic. The real charm of the trail is the countryside it winds through. Farms, fields, lakes, rivers, woodlands and grasslands are all there for viewing. It offers a look at many of the beauties of the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The Central Lakes State Trail also brings people into touch with wildlife of all kinds including deer, fox, beaver, rabbits, moles, turtles, eagles, ducks, muskrats and a wide variety of songbirds. The fastest summertime traffic on the trail tends to be bikers. Snowmobile traffic also tends to be brisk. Trail traffic should also be aware of road crossings. ON THE RANCH

Silver Sage Guest Ranch offers horseback riding, camps By Johanna Armstrong Resorter

Silver Sage Guest Ranch is a 427 acre family-owned ranch in Clitherall that offers horseback riding and horse camp, as well as pony rides and riding lessons. The ranch boasts 28 horses from as young as 8 years old to retired seniors nearing 40. “Just like people they have different personalities,” says ranch owner Joan Otto. Three different horseback riding experiences are offered for riders including an hourlong “Inspiration View Trail Ride” for $30 a person, a twohour “Sage Lake Crossing Ride”

for $55 or a three-hour “Trail Blazer Ride” for $80. “The scenery around this area is just gorgeous. In Otter Tail County we have like 1,100 lakes, which we have several just right on our property, so just the beauty of the land here is the highlight of the ride, along with the niceness of the horses,” says Otto. For children age 6 and under, Silver Sage offers 15 minute pony rides for $8. Ranch helpers will help match riders with the best horses for them, taking into account experience and comfort. “There are some horses that are easier if someone is just a beginner, a horse kind of just

guides them through it, and then there’s some for more experienced riders, they maybe have a little more ‘go’ than ‘whoa,’ so we try to match them up according to that,” says Otto. “But, just about anybody can ride any one of the horses, they’re all gentle and well-trained, and we have small ones for kids and bigger ones for bigger people.” Silver Sage Youth Horse Camp has had to make a few adjustments this year due to COVID-19 so there are no overnight camps, only day camps. Campers will learn about horse care, safety, proper saddling, bareback riding, fundamentals, games and more. Day camps are for guests aged 9 and up while children between the ages of 6 and 8 have the option of half-day miniclinics to learn safety, grooming, leading, saddling and riding. Day camp registration begins at 8 a.m. and half-day camps begin at 8:30 a.m. The ranch is located at 15381 410th Ave., in Clitherall and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HAVING FUN ON HORSEBACK: The Silver Sage Guest Ranch offers a variety of different riding lessons, while also having pony rides. Owner Joan Otto has a different age range of horses from 8 years old to 40. Ranch helpers match riders with horses that best fit their experience and comfort level.

Although they are usually a great place for a hike, to do some camping or to reconnect with nature, state parks have seen a boom this season due to state government orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. One such park located

near Battle Lake is Glendalough. Although in prior years the park would have several events planned throughout the summer, this season the events were postponed until next year. But while there may not be anything planned by the park there is still plenty to do. The park is well known for its camping, swimming,

hiking, biking, fishing and birding. Those looking to get on the water have several options including Annie Battle Lake, Lake Blanche, West Battle Lake, Molly Stark Lake, Sunset Lake and Lake Emma. Hiking, walking or riding bicycle is also great activities at the park as they have the paved Glendalough Trail Loop, as well as the scenic Beaver Pond Interpretive Trail. If you looking to stay over, there are several camping spots available. If you aren’t interested in roughing it, consider stay-

ing at the historic Glendalough Lodge or the park’s trail center. Both are heated and have flush toilets. Facilities can be reserved by calling the park at 218864-0110. While you don’t need to camp overnight at the park to enjoy several of the activities, you do need to purchase a park permit ($7 a day or $35 year-round). The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. The Goose Nest in Glendalough, operated by Battle Lake’s Galloping Goose Rentals, also provides a number of rentals

SCENIC AND SERENE: Maplewood State Park near Pelican Rapids has a vast landscape that is great for camping , hiking or spending a day in nature. Pelican Rapids. The shady hollows, wooded knolls and beautifully restored prairie provide a relaxing atmosphere for day visitors or campers. Although you can relax at the park, why not hike up Hallaway Hill and get a view of the overlooks? If hiking isn’t what you are looking for, take a scenic 5-mile drive through the park, take a stroll along South Lida Lake’s beach or have a picnic at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter. Another advantage the park provides is horse camping. Equestrian campgrounds can be reserved by contacting the park. The hours for the park are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Due

to staff availability, there is also a self-registration kiosk at the park office. The park will also require visitors to purchase a park permit.

s on i t c a r tt A e d i s d Roa Whether you are a longtime resident of lakes country, or just stopping in for a week — there are a significant amount of sights to see. A common type of landmark throughout the area are statues, figures and sculptures based around a historical figure, military tribute or an animal. They mostly sit on the main stretch of their respective towns or at the entrance to signify something that stands out about their heritage. Here’s a rundown of a few of them:

LARGEST PELICAN This towering pelican sits near Main Street in downtown Pelican Rapids, standing at the base of the Mill Pond dam on the Pelican River. The pelican stands at 15 1/2 feet tall and was built in 1957. The dam underneath the pelican has been approved funding for repairs and new bricks that are being installed this summer. ASHBY COOT Standing 10 feet tall, this large coot represents the largest Ashby area sportsmen club, Coot Unlimited. The coot statue is just outside of Ashby on State Highway 78. FERGUS GOOSE In addition to the otter, Fergus Falls is also home to the world’s largest Canada Goose. It’s located next to the Otter Tail County Historical museum along Lincoln Avenue.

OTTO THE OTTER Staying with the oversized animal theme, you’ll find the world’s largest otter standing in Fergus Falls at Grotto Park, looking out over the lake. Named Otto the statue is 40 feet long and is made of concrete-covered metal.

Roadside Att ractions THE WAHPETON CATFISH Just a hop across the Red River, you’ll find the world’s largest catfish statue in Wahpeton. Though not in Otter Tail County or even Minnesota, it still takes home a largest creature title, weighing in at 5,000 pounds. “Wahpper” is also 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, and made of fiberglass. It was built to call attention to the excellent catfishing there. FRAZEE TURKEY This massive statue Frazee, the “Turkey capital of the world,” is bronze, weighs more than 5,000 pounds and is more than 20 feet tall. Big Tom has between 3,000 and 4,000 fiberglass feathers, which took D.W.O. Fiberglass Co. more than 2,000 hours to complete. This new Big Tom statue first arrived in August 1998, after the older paper mache version burned down.

PHELPS FLOUR MILL The Phelps Mill County Park is open from May until the end of October. The mill joined the ranks on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Construction was completed on the mill in 1889. It was a symbol of old rural life and the history of milling in rural Minnesota.

ORWELL DAM Just southwest of Fergus Falls, the dam was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953. It stands at 60-feet high and 1,355 feet at its crest. ROTHSAY VETERANS MEMORIAL This commemorative plot at 101 Otter Tail County Highway 11 consists of a plaque on a stand, two benches and lights that will shine on the Minnesota state flag, American flag and POW/MIA flag. The idea for the plot started from 17-year-old Underwood Eagle Scout Austin Link who garnered support from the Rothsay City Council and other veteran organizations. They helped build the monument in August 2015.

VINING SCULPTURE GARDEN This display exhibits the sculpture art of Ken Nyberg. His pieces include a cup of coffee, an elephant, Bigfoot and an astronaut, to honor Nyberg’s daughter, Karen, who is an astronaut.

INSPIRATION PEAK In the southern part of Otter Tail County is a collection of glacial features known as the Leaf Hills. The highest among them is Inspiration Peak, just west of Urbank. It rises 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside, making it the highest point in the county and one of the highest points in the state of Minnesota.

ROTHSAY’S PRAIRIE CHICKEN The large chicken statue is fitting for Rothsay, which was dubbed the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” in 1975. The statue is 13-feet-by-18-feet and weighs in at 9,000 pounds. It has been around since 1976.

VERGAS LOON The world’s largest loon can be found in Vergas, overlooking Long Lake. It was built in the early 1960s, with money from the Vergas Fire Department. The 20-foot-tall loon was dedicated to a deceased town postmaster.

DALTON THRESHING GROUNDS The threshing grounds are located along the Central Lakes Trail. The Dalton Threshing Show has been around since 1957, the weekend before Labor Day weekend. Many steam engines operate throughout the grounds.

GRANT COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL A four-year development process resulted in this monument opening on July 2, 2015. The memorial features about 600 engraved bricks making up two black granite display cases, seven benches, granite plaques remembering soldiers and flags from various veteran organizations in the area. The bricks are purchased to honor soldiers and the money is donated to the organization to recognize the work done by veterans and veterans support groups.

MINNESOTA WOMAN MONUMENT Just 3 miles north of Pelican Rapids on U.S. Highway 59, this monument stands on the site of the discovery of “The Minnesota Woman.” The skeletal remains of a woman believed to be as much as 20,000 years old were found in the 1930s while the highway was under construction. There is now a group in Pelican Rapids called the Minnesota Glacial Women Organization that are actively trying to get more educational materials together in the town to teach people about the history of the woman.

Each brick commemorates a Grant County vet, VFW Posts or other organizations that donated a brick to the memorial. The monument is located in front of Prairie Ridge Hospital at 1411 State Highway 79 in Elbow Lake.

The Prospect House, located at 403 N. Lake Ave. in Battle Lake, was originally constructed in 1887 as a large wing for a hotel, it was renovated as a Georgian Revival style single-family home in 1929. The first house built on this site was constructed by James Allison “Cap” Colehour (1842-1938) and his wife Catherine (Kate) Augusta Catlin Colehour (c. 1951-1940) in 1882. Cap Colehour fought in the Civil War. His experience in the war, and the many letters, artifacts and mementoes are the basis for a museum now located in the house.

This spring, Inga Nelson, 88-year-old from Fergus Falls, was working in the prayer garden to ready it for meditation and enjoyment. Many volunteers have spent several hours preparing the park for visitors. God’s Acres has at least 15 different sporting areas and meditation places as well as a picnic area space. It is truly a “diamond in the rough.” Come and enjoy social distancing. The latest addition completed is the “Amor International Drone Port.” While watching recreational drone pilots use God’s Acres ballfield as a practice area, creativity led to the determination to develop an area in God’s Acres for them to have their “fun area.” Then Amor International Drone Port was established this spring. Here one can touch and go to visit seven different countries around the world in a 2 ½ acre course. When one feels accomplished enough, fly through the hoop (and hopefully will not have to pick up parts) between each country. One can even use it as a timed event to fly against one’s own time using state and international drone rules. God’s Acres will be hosting its annual
