Maplewood State Park ready for camping, outdoor activities

Each season holds its wonders, and spring is a spectacular time to visit Maplewood State park.

Maplewood State Park manager Don Del Greco says the foliage on the trees is just starting to burst out right now. “The sunshine is getting through to the ground and the wildflowers are starting to bloom. The park will have great wildflower shows for the next few weeks or so.”

DelGreco also said it’s a great time to get out and hike.

“You can see long and far into the forest, as the trees start to fill out their leaves, and it's a great time to see spring wildflowers, and various native plants. The colors are different in the spring, they’re a bit more muted than the fall, but nevertheless, spectacular, a lot of pinks, purples, and yellows with the wildflowers.”

He said it is also a good time to see the spring migration of birds because a lot of warblers and some sparrows are coming through. DelGreco reports that there has also been a variety of weather, which is more notable in the spring, between cool and warm, but it's a great time to hike and get out on the trails.

As far as wildlife, visitors to Maplewood will see a lot of the local year-round residents of the park like deer and also fishers, which are medium-sized mammals, comparable in size to a domestic cat. Raccoons are plentiful, and it's even possible to see an occasional bear, but DelGreco says that is quite rare.

Fishing is also starting to get underway, attracting a lot of early crappie anglers and sunfish. DelGreco says the park offers a great fishing pier as well.

Beers Lake is one of many lakes in the park for many type of fish. The park also touches the east side of South Lake Lida, and there are two boat landings in Maplewood, one on Beers Lake and the other on South Lida. There are also some smaller lakes in the park that require a little more of a hiking experience to get to them,and are beautiful and great to spend time on.

Campgrounds are reopening this time of year as well. If visitors would like to reserve a spot, DelGreco says it has to be done in advance. All state parks use a central reservation system, where campers call a phone number or go online and make a reservation before arriving. Visitors can plan their camping experience up to 120 days in advance for making a reservation.

Maplewood offers cabins, tenting, campsites, RV campground with electrical hookups, and also offers backpack and back country camping as well.
