Lakes Country welcomes you: Fun, adventure and more

With the sun out, the weather nice and the lakes at the ready, this summer is looking to be one of the best in Lakes Country. The options seem to be endless with the abundance of lakes, golf courses, restaurants, trails and other attractions that abound. Some of my personal favorite times of the summer were spent on the lake with my friends. We would head out early in the morning with food, drinks and some good tunes to relax. When we would get to our destination, usually one of our friend’s cabins, we would unload the car and head into the cabin. If we were lucky,

One of the few things that my friends and I enjoyed doing was clubbing at the local golf course. There are so many options in Lakes Country including Balmoral, Tipsinah, Pebble Lake, Birchwood, Bois de Sioux and others that a visitor or local is not far away from at least nine holes of fairway. I have to admit, I am not much of a golfer, opting for style over substance in my game. This catches me boogeying multiple holes and enjoying my time in the golf cart more than eyeing up a putt. If golf isn’t your cup of tea, go get a cup of tea or a cold beverage or some delicious food at one of the many restaurants in the area. Growing up, I was merely looking for a slice of pizza, wings and a soda, but now that I have aged I look for places that offer great food, great atmosphere and great service. Area eateries such as the Battle Lake Boathouse, City Restaurant, Dining Car 423, Otter Supper Club, Shoreline Restaurant, Spanky’s Stone

Hearth or Ten Mile Lake Steakhouse are just some of the great places that you can stop in, sit down and enjoy. If you are here looking for something to do that doesn’t involve a golf ball or food, the area provides several events throughout the summer that keep people coming back from near and far. Festivals such as Fergus Falls SummerFest, Erhard Fourth of July parade, Perham Turtle Fest, Vining’s Watermelon Days, Pelican Fest in Pelican Rapids and so many more allow visitors to see cities and towns in top form. If you aren’t into the festival scene, there are several places that offer an escape from the heat or a place to go on a rainy day. A Center for the Arts, Prairie Wetlands Learning Center, Westridge Theatre and other art related areas will allow you to still experience a great time even if the weather doesn’t cooperate. If the sun is shining but you are looking for a little bit more action, I-94 Speedway in Fergus

Falls can provide you rip roaring dirt track action each an every Friday evening throughout the summer. The race track will also be hosting a special event, the WISSOTA 100, in early September this season, giving fans four-days of racing excitement. Another option is to visit Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton or travel to Vergas to visit Trowbridge Creek Zoo. Each of the zoos is home to several animals you can’t see in the wild while taking in the scenery in Lakes Country. As a child, zoos were always a fun experience for me and broke up the lazy days of summer. Also, if you are looking for a place to worship in the area, there are several options for multiple faiths in the area. Check the Resorter’s directory for those options, times and information. With so much to do in the area, it is hard to be bored. So get out there and enjoy the lakes, restaurants, places, events and festivals that Lakes Country has to offer.

we would have jet skis or a pontoon to head out on for a full day on the lake. If we had jet skis, it was hours of back and forth across the lake and those that were waiting for their turn on the jet ski would swim or cast a line into the lake. Those near the shore were basically biding time as the waves diminished the opportunity for anything to nibble on the line. For those in the water, you attempted to get a big leap off he waves that came in toward land. After we had enough of the water, we began to look for things to do in the area. No TV, no internet and, at the time, cell phone reception was horrible. This is where we would dry off, change clothes and head into the local towns to find something to do. I wish I had something like the Fergus Falls Daily Journal’s Resorter to browse when in the area because we may have had more time to enjoy different restaurants or discover festivals in the area.

A walk on the wild side

Chahinkapa Zoo, of Wahpeton, and Trowbridge Creek Zoo of Vergas, are two of the area’s destinations for getting up close and personal with several animals you may not see in the backyard of Lakes Country. Chahinkapa Zoo has opened for the 2018 season and Kathy Diekman, zoo director, could not be more excited. The zoo opener was on Saturday, April 28, and brought in 771 people in six hours, according to Diekman. “Visitors enjoyed the gibbon ape family, an endangered species,” Diekman said. “The baby gibbon is starting to climb and walk on his own which is most fun to witness.” As of summer of 2017, the gibbons, spider monkeys and otters have renovated habitats. The whole zoo went through some major construction, changing its layout. Diekman said there is also a new addition, the African Habitat. This habitat houses the zebra herd and will house two, incoming white rhinos expected to be there by mid-May. “We are proud to be working toward this huge conservation plight,” Diekman said in regards to adding the rhinos to their exhibit. “Our mission is conservation education and we are proud of our conservation work.” In addition to the new exhibit and renovations, the zoo’s veterinary center is named, “Dr. Tim Matz Veterinary Center,” after the zoo’s vet of 40 years. Chahinkapa Zoo also has a new picnic area with new Grab ‘n Go food options for everyone’s convenience and new concessions in Margie’s Gift Shop. To benefit mothers taking their children on a day of fun, Chahinkapa Zoo has a new nursing station as well, sponsored by the North Dakota Breastfeeding

Zoo patrons visit with a grizzly bear at Chahinkapa Zoo. Chahinkapa, as well as Trowbridge Creek, are area zoos that provide a family-friendly environement if you want to get up close with nature. Coalition. The station will be ready by mid-May. “It will be a new log cabin for mothers to come in a private area, which is nice,” Diekman said. Beyond changing the physical footprint of the zoo, Diekman said Chahinkapa is expanding the impact it can have on its guests. There are new behind the scenes encounters available by scheduling. Diekman said a few to mention are the Lemur feedings, Walk-a-bout with Roos (kangaroo encounter) and Time with Tal (orangutan). To learn more about these encounters, go to chahinkapazoo.org. “This is a full-blown behind the scenes experience with everything and you can customize it to the group,” Diekman said.

Chahinkapa Zoo will also be doing more public education this year. “It will be more on the ground education and activities so people can come and participate,” Diekman said. That includes participating in the Blue Goose Days at Chahinkapa Zoo Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. For those excited to visit Chahinkapa Zoo this year, Diekman said they will have quite a few new residents to see. There is a baby zebra named Skipper, and the petting zoo has some baby goats and a bison calf, along with the other favorite barn friends — sheep, donkeys and miniature horses. The zoo has also welcomed a few joey kangaroos. “Little Marvin is the most popular, because we hand raised him. His

mom ran out of milk and so people see him daily already,” Diekman said. Although Snappy the alligator isn’t the youngest of zoo babies, he has grown fast— a surprise every visitor seems to notice. Diekman said Snappy is already over 9 and a half feet and when the nights get warmer, he will be out and about more in the exhibit. Chahinkapa Zoo has a number of primate species and cat species, in addition to the favorite native animals: the otter, bison, cougars and grizzly bears. “Chahinkapa Zoo features over 200 animals from six continents and is the premier zoo in the region. Only minutes from the lake area,” Diekman said.

Chahinkapa Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May 11. Starting May 12, it will be open until 7 p.m. Another stop in the area is Trowbridge Creek Zoo in Vergas. If you program the address of 50622 Co. Hwy. 17 into your GPS, you might find it strange that you are ask to enter the Ebersvillers’ driveway, but keep on ahead for another 30 feet to the parking lot. Here you will find the zoo of Dustin and Rachel Ebersviller. What started in the year 2000 with a few whitetail deer then grew into adding some elk and buffalo. Then the kangaroo and camels and so on and so forth until Ebersviller had the makings for either Noah’s Arc or a zoo nestled on his property. Construction started in the summer of 2015 with the help of some contractor friends and a lot of hard work. Ebersviller has had a hand in making each and every enclosure on the 10-acre spot. This is set to expand in the coming years onto the 30 more available acres that includes the back pond, a wooded area, and the grassy field zone by the zoo’s entrance. The half-mile loop that now takes families around an hour and a half to get through is set to become an attraction that could take you on an adventure all afternoon. Lions, tigers and bears may not be on the list of exhibits just yet, but there’s more than enough variety of species from different continents that it’s hard to feel like you’re missing anything when you walk through. Once Memorial Day comes around, Trowbridge Creek Zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, weather permitting. For more information, visit trwobridgezoo.com.

WISSOTA 100 highlights I-94 Speedway’s season There is a lot to get excited about in 2018 at I-94 Speedway. Not only will top-notch, dirt racing action continue, but a special event — the WISSOTA 100 — brings fans out for four days of racintg from across the region. The track, despite delays due to weather, kicked off its season in May. Fans pack the track, both in the stands and in the tailgate section, to get a glimpse of local and regional drivers spin their tires and take the checkered flag at the track. Regular races are every Friday evening with special events happening throughout the season. There are two kids nights scheduled June 1 and Aug. 10, while the always popular King of the Dirt event is scheduled July 13. The track will also be hosting their annual fireworks display for the Fourth of July on July 6. The big addition to the speedway’s calendar this season is the WISSOTA 100 on Sept. 12-15. The series is a four-day racing extravaganza that sees Midwest Modifieds, Street Stock, Late Model, Super Stock and Modified classes battle it out for racing supremacy. The first three days have drivers race to participate in Saturday’s Pot of Gold Parade of Champions feature races. The final day of the event will see a last chance race to qualify for that night’s feature event. The event pulls in driver’s from all the WISSOTA participating states such as Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, as well

Dick and his family are committed to doing this show right and will do a great job for the racers, the fans and for WISSOTA.” In addition to the already stellar event, WISSOTA will host its annual WISSOTA 100 Campsite Decorating Contest open to all campers attending the event. The theme this year is “Football Night in America.” Campers are asked to let their imaginations run wild and create a site

dedicated to their favorite football team. Judges will roam the four campgrounds surrounding I-94 Speedway looking for the best site with winners receiving prizes including complimentary tickets to next year’s WISSOTA 100. Fan gates open at 5:30 p.m. with admission this season being $10 on regular race nights and $20 on special event nights, including Friday’s event. Prairie Wetlands Learning Center celebrates 20 years, events The community of Fergus Falls has had a long history of strong support for outdoor, nature, and environmental activities including hunting, fishing, environmental education, bird watching, wildlife observation, hiking, cross country skiing, nature photography and much more. The location of Fergus Falls at the edge of the prairie with its abundance of wetlands, lakes, grasslands and timberlands along with the cultural values of many who homesteaded or moved here in the early days has been handed down from generation to generation. Over the last 50 years there had been considerable interest within the Fergus Falls community in establishment of a facility to highlight and accommodate these activities with a focus on providing environmental education (EE) opportunities for a large audience. The Fergus Falls Fish and Game Club was one of the first organizations to support efforts to create an environmental education center in Fergus Falls and along with the Izaak Walton League kept the idea at the forefront. There were also individuals and other conservation organizations in the community, who supported the idea of establishing an environmental education facility at Fergus Falls. Although there was strong support for a facility a number of questions needed to be answered; what would be the emphasis of the programs (prairie and wetlands); who would be the focus of these EE efforts (children, adults, travelers passing by on the Interstate?); what size and kind of building could be put in place and who would operate the facility. Finding a means to construct and operate a facility put the idea in a more or less dormant state for a number of years. In 1954, the US Fish and Wildlife Service established the first Wetland Management District in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America at Fergus Falls run by Wetland biologist Grady Mann. Eventually, there would be 38 wetland

The Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls will celebrate its 20th anniversary this summer. Join them in celebrating with a myriad of events throughout the summer months. Calendar of events management districts in the Prairie Pothole Region and in 1986 the service transferred a new manager by the name of Kevin Brennan to Fergus Falls. Brennan not only shared the interest of the community to construct a facility but also offered to take the needed steps to operate it as well. In the fall of 1987, at Maplewood State Park, a meeting of US Fish and Wildlife Service officials from the eight-state region was held and Brennan obtained their support to begin the process of studying the feasibility of an EE facility at Fergus Falls. The support of the US Fish and Wildlife Service was very important to the success of the project. Ideas were shared between interested individuals and the US Fish and Wildlife Service and it was decided that a local support group was needed to make an effort to get a facility up and running. The Friends of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center was formed with a mission “to enhance and promote understanding and conservation of the prairie pothole region.” The idea of “friends organizations” being formed to support National Wildlife Refuges was a very new concept in the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Friends service as a local support group and middleman between the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the community as

well as local, state and national political leaders. On March 5, 1990, one of the first formal meetings of the Friends of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center was held at the Fergus Falls office of the US Fish and Wildlife Service to explore opportunities to establish an Environmental Education facility at Fergus Falls. The first members of the Board of Directors were Tom Smith, Roger Rustad, Judy Stringer, John Rose, Dave Sanderson, Jim Nitchals, Peter Buessler, Jean Mckenzie, Richard Berge, Gordon Hydukovich, and Rick Drevlow. Judy Stringer was elected president of the group with Tom Smith as vice president, John Rose as secretary and Dave Sanderson as treasurer. One of the first accomplishments of the Friends was to have Congressman Arlan Stangeland sponsor federal legislation in the early 1990s to have a feasibility study completed for an environmental educational facility at Fergus Falls. This study laid the groundwork for what was to become the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center. As part of this study, the US Fish and Wildlife Service had identified the property along the 210 bypass south of Fergus Falls for establishment of the EE facility. Friends board members Tom Smith and John

Rose traveled to Washington DC seeking support from the Minnesota Congressional Delegation. In 1993 one US Fish and Wildlife staff person, Tim Bodeen was assigned responsibility to work out of the “Barn” now at the site conducting Environmental Education Programs for area students. At about this same time the state of Minnesota had committed to expanding environmental education opportunities around the state through the establishment of five or six major learning centers. Timing was in favor of the Friends of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center who in 1994 worked with state representative Robert (Bob) Anderson and Senator Dallas Sams to obtain $3 million for construction of the Prairie

Wetlands Learning Center at Fergus Falls. Judy Stringer, president of the Friends and several of the board members in cooperation Fergus Falls mayor Kelly Ferber and other local leaders played a key role in obtaining this funding from the state of Minnesota through the MN DNR. The Fergus Falls Fish and Game Club helped move the project forward by stepping in to provide property that could be exchanged with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and then donated to the city of Fergus Falls where the facility would be built. As impossible as it seems, an agreement was reached between the US Government (Fish and Wildlife Service), the State of Minnesota (MN DNR) and the local government (City of Fergus Falls) to construct and operate

the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center as it exists today. Design and construction of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center began in 1996 and a grand opening was held on Aug. 8, 1998. As pointed out recently in a Fergus Falls Daily Journal article over the past 20 years over 100 schools have visited the Learning Center many on an annual basis and more than 86,000 people visited the center in 2017 alone. The Prairie Wetlands Learning Center has come a long way since its beginning and we encourage people who haven’t visited the facility to go out and see the center, exhibits and trails.

theatre. So we tried to find another different location,” Johnson said. “We heard over and over how this area needed something like this and we worked hard to come up with new place that could match the dining and show experience we were known for at Elmer’s.” Johnson said one element, in particular, was critical for continuing: having a stand-alone theatre. “I think part of the success of our shows was that we weren’t just doing dinner shows in a restaurant, but we had a venue solely for the show,” she said. “It just works better for everyone including the audience.” Johnson thinks the show has found the perfect home. The new location will be the Event Center at the Old Town Bar & Grill in downtown

Clitherall. Located just minutes east of Battle Lake along Highway 210, the Event Center is a historic theatre that has “an

old vaudeville vibe,” Johnson said. “When I walked into that building, I immediately felt it had the feel of an authentic, old-time

theater, which really matches up perfectly for doing melodrama.” Old Town co-owner John Good is looking forward to

the adventure. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about the shows they put on, so we are sprucing up the theater and bringing

back some of the historical elements.” Good said patrons will enjoy a great home cooked meal that Old Town is known for: a BBQ rib dinner with baked potato, Texas beans, cole slaw, cheddar biscuits, apple crisp dessert with ice cream, ice tea and lemonade. Tickets for dinner and show are $45, which includes tax and gratuity, and will be available for purchase at www.fergusfuntastics.com, at the Old Town, or by calling 218-731-4837. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights starting June 15 through August 18. Doors open at 6 p.m. The Event Center is located in downtown Ciltherall – easy to find with plenty of parking. “We are thrilled to bring back some of this area’s finest actors,” Johnson said. “We are excited to work with a new stage and a new venue. And now we’ll have air conditioning for a hot show on those hot nights!”

bring their own rods, reels, and tackle if they would like. Tours also require a valid MN fishing license and guest capacity is limited to three. Once everything is in order, guests are welcomed to board “Out of the Blue,” Bosworth’s 2012 Alumacraft Competitor fishing boat to catch a range of fish including walleye, bass, sunfish, crappie or pike. Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle not only offers guided fishing tours, but it also has a wide range of tackle that can be found on the website. Everything is custom made whether by Bosworth himself or by other businesses he markets for such as one run by Mike Yeager out of Wisconsin or Mudd Butt Baits, which is also based out of Wisconsin. Since the opening of Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle, Bosworth has been able to expand the variety of tackle to Walleye Jigs, Walleye Spinner Rigs, and Yeager Feather Bombs all of which are available for sale on his website. Orders can be made online or to see the tackle in person, Bosworth

RESORTER 2018

Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle was started in 2015 by Tim Bosworth who saw an opportunity to follow his dream to own his own business and pursue his passion for fishing. Bosworth runs the business himself and his mission for Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle is to make available walleye fishing tackle that is custom designed for the blue waters of Minnesota, and the upper midwest. This business is based out of Bosworth’s home in Fergus Falls, but also offers guided fishing tours on any lake with a public access in Otter Tail County as well as the Otter Tail River. To go on one of these tours Bosworth recommends visiting his website, http:// outofthebluefishingtackle.com/ to sign up for an appointment, he asks that these be made three weeks in advance. Available times include weeknights from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. and most weekends, prices are also listed on his website. Tours typically range from 4-6 hours and Bosworth will supply the boat and if needed, equipment, but customers are welcome to

Out of the Blue owner Tim Bosworth shows off a fish. Bosworth started Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle in 2015 as he followed a dream of owning his own business and diving into the passion — fishing. says anyone is welcome to come and check them out and see what he can custom make for them. Customers can have their order mailed or picked up in person at his home. “It’s pretty simple and I like that I can work on things whenever I want because it’s right here, “ Bosworth said when asked what it is like running a business out

of his home. Bosworth also lives with his wife Brenda and two of his four children at home. Not only does he run Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle, but Bosworth also works a full-time job during the day. He hopes that Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle will be what he can do in his retirement to keep him busy in the future. Bosworth is also very thankful

for all the support and advice he has gotten from other people in the business and people in town that have helped him get his business started. Out of the Blue Fishing Tackle can be found at 617 West Beech Ave in Fergus Falls, MN. For more information visit his website and to contact Bosworth click the “Contact the Captain” tab.

If you catch and keep a fish that you think could be a record, follow these steps: — Take the fish to a DNR fisheries office for positive identification and a state record fish application. — Weigh the fish on a state-certified scale (found at most bait shops and butcher shops), witnessed by two observers. — Complete the application and send it along with a clear, full-length photo of your fish to the address listed on the form. — DNR does not keep line class records.

DETERMINING FISH LENGTH To determine the legal length of a fish, lay it flat on its side, squeeze the tail from tip to tip, and measure from the nose or jaw, whichever is longer, to the farthest tip of the tail when fully extended.

Delicious dishes BOATHOUSE, AREA RESTAURANTS OFFER DELECTABLE DINING The people of Battle Lake and surrounding area looked forward to Monday, May 21 as the Boathouse reopened its doors. The new owner, Josie Schmidt, purchased the Boathouse in the middle of April from previous owners Brad and Teresa Gruss. Before owning the Boathouse, Schmidt held a position at Bello Cucina in Fergus Falls while going to school online through Liberty University to get a degree in business management. Fortunately, there was little renovations for the 22-year-old to complete as the Grusses took care most of the changes. Schmidt’s family has also been very supportive by offering help whenever they can. “My grandfather does a lot of woodworking and he is actually making the hostess stand.” Schmidt said. “For me, it’s been actually like taking a step into doing something new, I have been at Bellos for six years and we are like one big family. I love what I do there, so moving away from that has been really hard and scary,

but exciting all at the same time,” Schmidt said when asked what the hardest part has been about moving into this new chapter of her life. Inspired by her experience and relationships built at Bello Cucina, Schmidt hopes to bring that energy to the Boathouse. “It has always been my dream to have a restaurant and be a good employer. I hope to build good relationships with the workers and customers,” Schmidt said. The Boathouse offers casual dining in a fun atmosphere, “My passion is really creating an experience for guests that even though it is casual dining, I want it to be a first-class experience with next level service,” Schmidt said. The Boathouse will be serving foods such as pasta, pizzas, fish and more. For those craving something sweet, check out the Grandma’s Wacky Cake. Grandma’s Wacky Cake is a chocolate cake created from an old Schmidt family recipe. “I have really fond memories of making wacky cake with my grandma and mom

and I am really excited to share that,” Schmidt said. They will also be offering a photo worthy family style dessert along with cheesecake. Once the Boathouse gets its feet on the ground and is running smoothly, Schmidt hopes to expand their services to include pizza delivery and full catering. They also hope to start a brunch for Saturdays and Sundays as a way to offer something new to the area that isn’t being offered anywhere else. The Boathouse is located on 112 Lake Avenue South in Battle Lake. For now, hours are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Fridays through Saturdays 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. Other spots in the area also offer delicious wares.

The Otter Supper Club

The Otter Supper Club has been a part of the community of Ottertail since 1967, when it was known as the Red Otter. Its history is what truly makes this restaurant unique, as it is a place that has been in the hearts of many in the community for years. This restaurant appeals to anyone looking for a delicious bite to eat, cold drink

Josie Schmidt, owner of the Boathouse in Battle Lake, takes over the restaurant after working another position in the dining business for several years. The Boathouse, as well as several other restaurants provide great eats for Lakes Country. ZACH STICH/RESORTER and great atmosphere. Their menu offers everything from pasta to seafood to steak. Some of their most popular dishes include their prime rib and walleye fingers, though anything on the menu, they promise will be excellent. Not only is the Otter Supper Club a restaurant, but it also has a 15 room lodge, a liquor store and it is just one mile away from access onto Ottertail Lake. In the summer throw a big parking lot party. This year the featured performer will be Phil Vassir on July 27 — opening for him will be Red Line Live from Fargo. The Otter Supper Club is located at 306 MN-78 in Ottertail.

Underwood Quik Stop

The Underwood Quik Stop is owned by husband and wife, Bruce and Laurie Huseth. The restaurant portion of the Quik Stop was opened in October of 2014 at the request of the community, as the diner in town had been closed, and the people in town wanted a sit-down diner. “Our community has been very supportive of the restaurant and getting it started,” Bruce said. The restaurant has a fastcasual feel that is family friendly and resemblant of an old-school diner. The menu includes pizza, subs, tacos, burritos and their most popular food item, broasted chicken. There is also a full breakfast menu,

burgers and fries. What makes this restaurant unique is its open-floor design that allows customers to see into the kitchen and actually watch their food be prepared. Customers are also able to see into the connecting convenience store that was established in 1991. Located at 29346 MN-210 in Underwood, the Quick Stop is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m.- 10 p.m.

Shoreline has been around for many years and was originally started back in 1949. Through the years this restaurant has had many owners, but is currently under the ownership of Mike Neuman.

beverages using traditional methods. This restaurant was the idea of Ben Schierer and his wife Tessa who started it in 2015, “We had the idea and the concept, then things fell into place as we found a space and we were off running,” Ben said. Union Pizza is for anyone, “who likes good food, a good atmosphere and friendly service,” Ben said when asked who would enjoy the restaurant. They offer pizza, sandwiches, salads, burritos, beer, wine and more. Their specialty pizzas are a particular favorite among customers as well as their awardwinning Traveller IPA beer. What makes Union Pizza unique is that they are the only wood fire pizzeria and brew pub in the area and the fact that they make everything from scratch using quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Also they entire restaurant has an AmeriUnion Pizza Union Pizza is a wood can Historical theme and fire pizzeria and brew pub during the summer it has that handcrafts food and outdoor seating in the back.

Spanky’s Stone Hearth

Spanky’s Stone Hearth can be found on the edge of Beautiful Rose Lake near Vergus. The restaurant is the perfect mix of professionalism, coziness, sophistication and relaxation. It is the perfect location for hosting parties or special events as well as kicking back with a friend and enjoying great food. Spanky’s Stone Hearth was originally built in 1946 but was remodeled in 2011 after a kitchen fire. Customer favorites include charcoal grilled steaks, BBQ ribs, and fresh seafood along with their extensive fine wine selection. According to general manager Jared Faul, one popular dish called Trust Me is whatever the cook decides, “It’s grown year after year, getting better each time,” stated Faul. Spanky’s cares greatly about the

ingredients used in their dishes so they use locally grown ingredients when available, locally sourced beef and pork, and fresh fish that is flown in weekly. For those interested in spending some time in a rustic cabin with two beautiful fireplaces, find Spanky’s Stone Hearth at 34785 County Highway 4, Frazee. They are closed Mondays and are open 5-9pm on Sunday through Thursday and from 5-10pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Old Homestead Cafe

The Old Homestead Cafe is a staple restaurant in Henning and is known for their homestyle feeling and tasty food. The cafe was bought in December of 2014 by Tom and Margaret Schuveiller and their daughter Liz and her husband Ryan and their son Thomas. The Cafe prides themselves on providing “Quality food at a Quality price, our Guarantee to you.”

The menu consists of classics such as pancakes, french toast, biscuits and gravy, burgers, sandwiches, and steaks. With cinnamon roll french toast on the menu, owner Tom states that breakfast is their busiest time of the day. One of the best parts of the Homestead Cafe is that many of their items are made from scratch, “It’s about as homemade as it can get,” added Tom. Future customers should also be on the lookout for pizzas being added onto the menu. With a new pizza oven in the kitchen, they should be a permanent addition by Memorial Day. The Old Homestead Cafe is located at 55870 MN-120, Henning is open from 7am7pm daily.

Ye Olde Schoolhouse

Ye olde Schoolhouse is the perfect place for anyone looking for a restaurant with good food, friends and a bit of history. The bar goes way back to when it was first a schoolhouse in the 1800s. It did not take long

after the school was abandoned in 1976 for it to come back to life as a restaurant. Ye Olde Schoolhouse is located near Kemper Lake in Edwards, and has been on a long journey. Although current owner Bryan Stetz has been in charge for the past 9 years, there have been two other owners that have come before him. According to Stetz, the joint first started out as a pizza place with a bar. Once they added to the kitchen, they were then able to add in other options such as chicken and burgers. For those who come to Ye Olde Schoolhouse, consider ordering one of their biggest sellers such as one of their burgers or the brisket. In addition, all you can eat walleye will be making a comeback in the near future. It started as an option for lent, but Stetz was amazed at how well his customers like the dish. For those interested in a historic location that serves a tasty burger, Ye Olde Schoolhouse can be found at 24028 Emery Dr, Edwards.

Check out these area landmarks for some great vacation photos! Whether you are a longtime resident of Lakes Country, or just stopping in for a week — there are a significant amount of sights to see. A common type of landmark throughout the area are statues, figures and sculptures based around a historical figure, military tribute or an animal. They mostly sit on the main stretch of their respective towns or at the entrance to signify something that stands out about their heritage. Here’s a rundown of a few of them: LARGEST PELICAN This towering pelican sits near Main Street in downtown Pelican Rapids, standing at the base of the Mill Pond dam on the Pelican River. The pelican stands at 15 1/2 feet tall and was built in 1957. The dam underneath the pelican has been approved funding for repairs and new bricks that are being installed this summer.

ASHBY COOT Standing 10 feet tall, this large coot represents the largest Ashby area sportsmen club, Coot Unlimited. The coot statue is just outside of Ashby on State Highway 78.

OTTO THE OTTER Staying with the oversized animal theme, you’ll find the world’s largest otter standing in Fergus Falls at Grotto Park, looking out over the lake. Named Otto the statue is 40 feet long and is made of concrete-covered metal. FERGUS GOOSE In addition to the otter, Fergus Falls is also home to the world’s largest Canada Goose. It’s located next to the Otter Tail County Historical museum along Lincoln Avenue.

ROTHSAY’S PRAIRIE CHICKEN The large chicken statue is fitting for Rothsay, which was dubbed the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” in 1975. The statue is 13-feet-by-18-feet and weighs in at 9,000 pounds. It has been around since 1976. THE WAHPETON CAT Just a hop across the Red River, you’ll find the world’s largest catfish statue in Wahpeton. Though not in Otter Tail County or even Minnesota, it still takes home a largest creature title, weighing in at 5,000 pounds. “Wahpper” is also 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, and made of fiberglass. It was built to call attention to the excellent catfishing there. FRAZEE TURKEY This massive statue Frazee, the Turkey Capital of the World, is bronze, weighs more than 5,000 pounds and is more than 20 feet tall. Big Tom has between 3,000 and 4,000 fiberglass feathers, which took D.W.O. Fiberglass Co. more than 2,000 hours to complete. This new Big Tom statue first arrived in August 1998, after the older paper mache version burned down. VERGAS LOON The world’s largest loon can be found in Vergas, overlooking Long Lake. It was built in the early 1960s, with money from the Vergas Fire Department. The 20-feet-tall loon was dedicated to a deceased town postmaster.

VINING SCULPTURE GARDEN This display exhibits the sculpture art of Ken Nyberg. His pieces include a cup of coffee, an elephant, Bigfoot and an astronaut, to honor Nyberg’s daughter, Karen, who is an astronaut.

INSPIRATION PEAK In the southern part of Otter Tail County is a collection of glacial features known as the Leaf Hills. The highest among them is Inspiration Peak, just west of Urbank. It rises 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside, making it the highest point in the county and one of the highest points in the state of Minnesota. CHIEF WENONGA This large statue of the Chief is located in Halverson Park in Battle Lake. It’s about 12 feet tall with a rock mace and thousand-yard stare.

PHELPS FLOUR MILL The Phelps Mill County Park is open from May until the end of October. The mill joined the ranks on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Construction was completed on the mill in 1889. It was a symbol of old rural life and the history of milling in rural Minnesota. ORWELL DAM Just southwest of Fergus Falls, the dam was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1953. It stands at 60-feet high and 1,355 feet at its crest. DALTON THRESHING GROUNDS The threshing grounds are located along the Central Lakes Trail. The Dalton Threshing Show has been around since 1957, the weekend before Labor Day weekend. Many steam engines operate throughout the grounds.

MINNESOTA WOMAN MONUMENT Just three miles north of Pelican Rapids on U.S. Hwy. 59, this monument stands on the site of the discovery of “The Minnesota Woman.” The skeletal remains of a woman that believed to be as much as 20,000 years old were found in the 1930s while the highway was under construction. There is now a group in Pelican Rapids called the Minnesota Glacial Women Organization that are actively trying to get more educational materials together in the town to teach people about the history of the woman. ROTHSAY VETERANS MEMORIAL This commemorative plot at 101 Otter Tail County Highway 11 consists of a plaque on a stand, two benches and lights that will shine on the Minnesota state flag, American flag and POW/MIA flag. The idea for the plot started from 17-year-old Underwood Eagle Scout Austin Link who garnered support from the Rothsay City Council and other veteran organizations. They helped build the monument in August 2015.

GRANT COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL A four-year development process resulted in this monument opening on July 2, 2015. The memorial features about 600 engraved bricks making up two black granite display cases, seven benches, granite plaques remembering soldiers and flags from various veteran organizations in the area. The bricks are purchased to honor soldiers and the money is donated to the organization to recognize the work done by veterans and veterans support groups. Each brick commemorates a Grant County vet, VFW Posts or other organizations that donated a brick to the memorial. The monument is located in front of Prairie Ridge Hospital at 1411 State Highway 79 in Elbow Lake.
