LEAD SOIL SAFE’ #10. If your home was built before 1978 you should have your soil and residential paint checked to see if it is lead based. Residential paint before 1978 contained lead. #9. If your home was built before 1978 and you plan on remodeling, there are specific steps to take to avoid exposing you and your children to lead dust from lead based paint. #8. Make sure your children eat a nutritious meal full of low fat foods rich in iron and calcium.

They help rid the body of lead. #7. Immediately clean up chipping, chalking or cracking paint from the inside and outside of your home.

Always wet scrape or wet sand when cleaning or remodeling your home. #6. Avoid contact with bare soil if you do not know that it is lead free. Do not let children play in bare soil. #5. Wash you and your children’s hands often, especially before eating, nap time and bed time. #4. Clean and remove shoes before entering your home to avoid tracking in lead soil.

History of Fredericktown

FREDERICKTOWN

The village of St. Michaels, of which Fredericktown is the successor, was established about 1802 by French families that had received grants of land in the vicinity. It consisted of a little cluster of log houses, some twelve or fifteen in number and a store kept by Charles F. Goin. When, in June, 1814, the Saline and Castor Creeks overflowed their banks, and drove the inhabitants out, some of the families refused to return, and established what was known as the new village, one and one-half miles north of St. Michaels, where in 1820 a church was built. In 1819 Fredericktown was laid off on the Saline, opposite St. Michaels, on land owned by Nathaniel Cook. It was named in honor of George Frederick Bollinger, of Cape Girardeau County. The first stores were opened

by S. A. Guignon, S. B. Pratte, and Moses and Calet Cox. History of Southeast Missouri, 1888, Goodspeed, pp. 446, 447.

It covers several sections in Township 33 N, Range 7 E, at the junction of Highways 72, 61, & 67.

History of MARQUAND

MARQUAND

Marquand, situated along the banks of the Castor River and surrounded by the Mark Twain National Forest, nestles among the hills of the St. Francois Mountains. Native Americans inhabited the Castor River valley for thousands of years, evidenced by the artifacts and mounds they left behind. The first settlers of European descent to the area were the families of Captain Henry Whitener (who secured a Spanish land grant) and Michael Mouser, both arriving in the spring of 1804. Most of the earliest pioneers were of German descent from North Carolina. The town was originally referred to as Whitener Settlement.

Around 1869, a railroad administrator named Henry G. Marquand was so attracted by the natural beauty of the area that he donated $1,000 for the construction of a church. The people were so overwhelmed by his generosity they renamed their little town in his honor. The Missouri Pacific Railroad operated a line through the town from 1869 to the early 1970s. The E.S. Lett Bridge, constructed in 1924 with money raised by Mr. Lett, spanned the Castor River at Marquand for seventy years. A portion of it can still be seen in the Marquand Park.

Madison County has no cases of the Zika virus. This is a mosquito transmitted disease associated in the United States with travel to areas with Zika virus.

Those most at risk are pregnant women or women and men of reproductive age. If you have traveled or plan to travel to an area with Zika virus and are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, consult with your doctor or visit the CDC website at cdc.gov/zika/index.html Everyone can help prevent Zika transmission from occurring in Missouri by implementing two simple steps—control mosquitoes inside and outside your home and use personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites and prevent sexual transmission.

Controlling Mosquitoes in and Around the Home One of the most effective ways of preventing the spread of Zika virus is controlling the mosquito population by eliminating standing water in and around the home. Implementing the steps below can greatly reduce your risk of mosquito bites.

Control Mosquitoes Outside the Home • Tip n’ Toss - once a week empty and scrub, turnover, cover, or throw out any items that hold water like tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, or trash containers. Mosquitoes lay eggs near water.

• Tightly cover water storage containers (buckets, cisterns, rain barrels) so that mosquitoes cannot get inside to lay eggs.

• For containers without lids, use wire mesh with holes small enough to keep mosquitoes out.

• Use larvicides to treat large containers of water that will not be used for drinking and cannot be covered or dumped out. When using larvicides always follow label directions.

• Use an outdoor flying insect spray where mosquitoes rest. Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid areas like under patio furniture, or under the carport or garage.

When using insecticides, always follow label instructions.

• If you have a septic tank, repair cracks or gaps. Cover open vent or plumbing pipes. Use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito.

Control Mosquitoes Inside the Home • Keep windows and doors shut and use air conditioning when possible.

• If keeping windows and doors open, install or repair broken screens. Do not leave doors propped open. This will prevent mosquitoes from coming into your house.

• Keep mosquitoes from laying eggs inside your home. Once a week, empty, scrub, turnover, cover or throw out any items that hold water like vases and flowerpot saucers.

• Kill mosquitoes inside your home. Use an indoor flying insect fogger or indoor insect spray to kill mosquitoes and treat areas where they rest.

These products work immediately, but may need to be reapplied. Always follow label directions.

• Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid places like under the sink, in closets, under furniture, or in the laundry room.

Preventing Mosquito Bites Zika is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Zika can also be sexually transmitted and can be passed from a pregnant mother to her fetus during pregnancy. Because biting mosquitoes are the primary means of transmission it is very important to prevent mosquito bites.

Protect Yourself, faMilY, friends and neighBors froM Mosquito Bites • Wear insect repellant on exposed skin and your clothing. • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered insect repellants with one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol. EPA-registered insect repellants have proven safe and effective even for pregnant and breast-feeding women. • Always follow the product label instructions. • Reapply insect repellant as directed.

• Do not spray repellant on the skin under clothing. • When using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen before applying insect repellant.

• The effectiveness of natural insect repellants (non-EPA registered) is unknown against diseases like Zika.

• To protect your child from mosquito bites: • Do not use insect repellant on babies younger than 2 months old.

• Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.

• Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs. • While outside, cover crib, stroller and baby carrier with mosquito netting.

• Do not apply insect repellant onto a child’s hands, eyes, mouth or cut or irritated skin. • Adults: Spray insect repellant onto your hands then apply to a child’s face.

• Wear long-sleeved, loose fitting, light colored shirts and pants when possible.

• Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.
