The retail options are aplenty There used to be a time when going on a shopping trip meant waiting until the weekend, loading up the kids in the station wagon and heading for the city. Things have sure changed a lot since then! The Parkland region has experienced significant retail growth and nowadays there are lots of great places to shop close to home — whether you're looking for groceries, hunting and fishing gear, home appliances, farm equipment, clothing or shoes. Of course, everybody knows there are Walmart Supercenters in Farmington, Desloge, Potosi and Fredericktown, as well as Menards and Lowe's and some locally-owned retailers where you can find nearly anything -- including the kitchen sink.

Wanting to purchase new furniture and appliances? Yes, you could head to St. Louis or Cape Girardeau, but why? The Parkland has outstanding stores like Hefner Furniture and Appliance, Seabaugh Furniture and Appliance, Willette Home Furnishings, Patsy's Furniture and Fisher Furniture and others which offer good merchandise at great prices. On top of that, most of these stores service what they sell. If you're wanting a new outfit for next weekend's event, the Parkland's got you covered — literally! Check out Maurice's, Payless ShoeSource, Cato Fashions, Famous Footwear and Rue 21, but you might want to give these

visits to the area's farm s u p p l y stores. Local farmers, hobby farmers and gardeners can choose from Rural King, T r a c t o r S u p p l y , F a m i l y Center, or MFA or one of the great locally-owned feed and farm stores across the region. Are you a proponent of your Second Amendment R i g h t s ? So, what all can you shop for in the Parkland? The list goes on and on. In addition to larger and chain stories, this region is rich with small, startup or mom-and-pop niche shops. There's one on every corner - well, nearly. Auto parts? The choices are almost inexhaustible! Agricultural supplies? You can bet the farm on it. Add to that pet supplies; RVs, fabric, sewing and craft supplies; meat markets; adult beverages and antiques, and the list goes on and on. When you're car is ailing, you want a repair shop you can trust to do the work right the first time at a reasonable price. That's the time to head to Premier Tire and Auto in Desloge, Heartland Auto in Fredericktown or Wade's Auto Service in Farmington. After you've had a collision, there are no better body repair experts than the ones you'll find at Dale Mosier Auto Body in Park Hills and Kevin Ball's Auto Body in Leadington, or Redfield Collision Center in Farmington. They know their stuff and work well with all major insurance companies. But we all know that cars are not the only things that

When you're looking for top quality services for you and your family's needs, there's no better place to go than the Parkland. It doesn't matter if you're looking for an auto repair shop, a bank, a caterer or a hair salon, you want the best service at the best price. That's why it's always best to go with the people you know and can trust, or to have referrals from good friends and family members who have experience with area service providers. Looking for a great apartment community to live in? There's new ones popping up all over the Parkland, but some of the best you'll find anywhere include Liberty Landing, Keystone Villas or Columbia Park Apartments.

sometimes break down and need repair. Thankfully, the Parkland is home to many qualified and highly competent physicians, chiropractors and dentists, as well as other health care professionals when the need is there. In 2017 our readers voted Dr. Dickinson as the best primary care physician, with Dr. Lum and Dr. Robbins a close second and third. Who will be named the best primary care physician this year? It's up to you to decide. Also in the health field, voters named Westmount Dental Arts as the best dentist office, with Fredericktown Family Dental and Gentle Dental also making the top of the list. The title of Best Chiropractor went to Huck Chiropractic, with Citizens Chiropractic and Reiter Chiropractic also near the top of the list. When searching for a bank, people want one they can trust to take care of all their financial needs in a safe, friendly and efficient manner. The Parkland is home to many wellrespected financial institutions — First State Community Bank, Belgrade State Bank, New Era Bank, U.S. Bank, First Bank, Unico Bank and Ozarks Federal Savings & Loan. All of them provide their customers with fast and friendly service, whether they're opening a checking or savings account, or applying for a loan. And there are few things aside from your own health as important as the health and well-being of the family pet. The Parkland is fortunate to have some of the best and most caring veterinarians you'll find anywhere. Among them are the Veterinary Clinic of the Mineral Area, the Fredericktown Animal Hospital and many more.

As far as pet grooming and boarding, check out Waggin' Tails, Worrynought Kennels or 4 Paws Grooming. These three ranked highest with voters last year, but the area has several other fine grooming or boarding services as well. Among the many other services offered in the Parkland, you'll find car washes, cleaning services, hearing specialists, fitness gyms, daycare/preschools, spas, nail salons, financial planning services, golf courses, contractors, hotels, insurance agencies, oil change shops, real estate agencies, print shops, tanning salons and countless others. When searching for someone to perform a service, one of the best ways to find someone who will do a good job at a fair price is to check out the recommendations or complaints of others who've sought the same services in the past. A quick search online to read service reviews, as well as a call to the Better Business Bureau can also help to avoid having a bad — and expensive — experience. Do your part to make your preferences known and go to www.dailyjournalonline.com in coming days and vote for your "best of ..." in more than 100 different categories. Then later this spring we'll put our the "Best of the Parkland 2018" magazine as a reference for finding great services in our region. ** Editor's note - Names of businesses listed in this story are as examples only and are not a complete list of those available for votes in that particular category. You are urged to cast your votes in our contest based on the quality of services you have received in the past.

Of course, the Parkland has all the familiar “burger joints” including McDonald’s, A&W, Burger King, Steak 'n Shake, Culver’s and Sonic, but have you ever tried a homestyle cheeseburger from Hunts Dairy Bar, Spokes Pub or LaMotte Cafe? M i s s o u r i ’ s Parkland offers a wide variety of dining and entertainment choices for everyone from the late-night snacker who's craving a pizza “with everything on it” to the budget-conscious family looking for a fast, delicious and low-cost meal, or a couple dreaming of a first-class meal while out on that special evening together. Want to pick up a pizza or have one delivered? We’ve got many of the national chains like the St. Louis-based Imo's Pizza, Pizza Hut or Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza, and grab and go favorites including Little Caesar’s or Domino's — or stop by any one of many Casey’s General Stores in the area for pizza sold by the pie or the slice.

Wall, First Wok and more. Of course, for those in a hurry, there’s always Taco Bell — and the good news is they’re open really late on the weekends! If you’re a fan of great barbecue, the Parkland is a great place to live! Whether you like your ribs wet or dry, you can find just what you’re looking for right here at home. Baylee Jo’s BBQ a regional favorite, but don't overlook Dexter Bar-B-Que or the new Sugarfire in Farmington, or the iconic The Pig in Fredericktown. Hungry Bellies also ranked in the top three according to last year's voters. Hungry for breakfast? There's always fast food fare, of course, but you might want to try the Factory Diner’s two Farmington locations or one of several Huddle House locations in the region, or maybe A&M Restaurant in Fredericktown which also ranked high

on last year's list. Some serve breakfast all day long, and even into the night. For those who enjoy family dining, don't miss out on the Catfish Kettle where you can enjoy all-youcan-eat catfish, chicken and other delicious entrées. The Homestead Restaurant offers a buffet featuring fabulous American fare like fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and awesome desserts. The Factory Diner with it's scrumptious breakfast menu also ranked in the top three in 2017. After all, everything is better with bacon, right? For those looking for a great place to meet up with friends after a hard day at work, try Hub’s Pub, the Shamrock, Spokes Pub or the Salted Duck for a big selection of great drinks and bar food. popular spot to enjoy a drink along with a nice meal in a congenial and family-friendly atmosphere. The state of Missouri in recent years has become the home for an ever-increasing number of breweries and wineries — and many of the best can be found in the Parkland. By the drink or by the bottle, some of the finest tasting wines around can be found at Twin Oaks, Crown Valley or Chaumette, ranked in that order by voters in 2017, but the area boasts many more including Sand Creek Vineyard and Winery, The Terrace, St. Francois Winery, Charleville, The Cave, Papa's Vineyard, Vance Vineyards and others. As for those wanting to enjoy a good steak or other more formal fare, the Parkland now has a number of great places where you can enjoy a top notch meal at reasonable prices. Last's year's voters selected 12 West to top the list, but also ranked Durso Hills Winery near the top. For a special treat, head over to the

Arcadia Valley for a nice meal at Thee Abbey Kitchen — and don't forget to take home some of their famous cinnamon rolls or visit their new candy store! From Lix Frozen Custard, General Custard's Re-Treat or Scoops Frozen Custard for some ice cream or frozen yogurt, to Wise Grounds, Panera Bread Co., Arcadia Valley Roasting Company, or maybe the new RaeCole's Coffee Bar or No. 9 Coffee Co. for some warm caffeine, or BOGO, Old Thyme Pantry or Hungry Gardener for a deli sandwich ... there's something new to try every day. There are plenty of other specialty restaurants, bakeries and shops in the area where you can enjoy a nice meal or snack without spending a great deal of money. Hankering for some chicken wings? The Parkland has it covered. Deli sandwiches? Yep, those too. Bakeries ... coffee shops? Got 'em ... and got 'em! Ice cream? Frozen custard? Slushies? Yes, yes and yes you'll find them here.
