4th Annual Best of the Parkland
Do you have a favorite antique store or clothing store? How about a favorite mechanic or family physician? Perhaps a favorite restaurant or tattoo parlor? You can help let all your friends and neighbors know which area services, shops, dining and entertainment venues you prefer. The Daily Journal, along with the Farmington Press and Democrat News, is once again sponsoring the “Best of the Parkland” online contest as a way for readers to vote for their favorites and let everyone know which services and retailers rank at the top in the Parkland. Best of the Parkland will focus on roughly 100 categories in which readers can cast their votes. You’ll find them listed elsewhere in this publication. You can vote once per day for any or all of the different categories, so there’s good reason to keep coming back to see your favorites climb to the top of the ranking. How were the businesses selected to appear in the categories? Over a several week period recently we asked for and received your nominations. In fact, we received more than 7,000 nominations from readers. Now each category has been populated with your nominations from across the region which fit in that area of expertise. All that’s left to do is to select a winner in each category. Voting will begin March 17 and will run through midnight
of March 29. During that time readers will find the “Best of the Parkland” voting prompt at the top of the Daily Journal website at www.dailyjournalonline.com or on the contests page.
The contest will feature everything from best dance studio to best wait staff, best antique shopping to best tire shop, and best apartment community to best funeral home. To help clarify the categories they have been broken down into about a dozen main subgroups including: Automotive; Beauty and Self; Bridal and Special Occasion; Dining and Restaurants; Fashion; Favorites; Finance, Insurance and Real Estate; Fitness/Sports and Recreation; Healthcare; Home and Farm; Seniors; Services; Shopping; and Other. Voting is free, and again you can return every day and cast new votes in any or all of the categories. Once the voting is complete, the winners in each category will be tabulated and named in
the Best of the Parkland Winner’s Edition Magazine in the April 25 edition of the Daily Journal and the April 29 edition of the Democrat News. Nominated businesses are urged to promote themselves on social media and directly to patrons through mentions about the contest and encourage their customers to vote them to the top of the ranks. So starting voting on March 17 and then look for the results on April 25. You might even want to keep a copy of our “Best of the Parkland Winners Edition” magazine for future reference when looking for a service provider, a retailer, or trying to answer that age-old dilemma of “where do we want to eat.”

The Parkland region has experienced significant retail growth and there are a lot of great places to shop close to home — whether you’re looking for groceries, hunting and fishing gear, home appliances, farm equipment, clothing or shoes.
Of course, everybody knows there are Walmart Supercenters in Farmington, Desloge, Potosi and Fredericktown, as well as Menards and Lowe’s
and Hobby Lobby and some locally-owned retailers where you can find nearly anything.
Wanting to purchase new furniture and appliances? The Parkland has outstanding stores like Hoods Discount Home Center, Hefner Furniture and Appliance, Seabaugh Furniture and Appliance, Willette Home Furnishings, Patsy’s Furniture and Fisher Furniture and
others which offer furnishings at great prices. On top of that, most of these stores service what they sell. If you’re wanting a new outfit for next weekend’s event, the Parkland’s got you covered — literally! Check out local boutiques such as Ophelia’s, Queen Anne’s Lace, Ally Sue, Encore, A Simply Chic Boutique, Bound Society, or visit Cato Fashions, Famous Footwear, Rue 21, Shopping Continued on Page 5

PAGE 5 For those making wedding plans, you don’t head to the city to find a dress to say “yes” to anymore. Consider a visit to Special Memories, White Weddings, or His and Hers Formal Wear. And find the perfect engagement or wedding ring at Krekeler Jewelers or Diamonds and More. Then pick out the floral arrangements at Butterfield Florist, Country Bouquet, Country Lane, Ike’s Florist, Parkland Flower Girl, Greene’s Florist and more.
Shopping Cont. from Page 4 Glik’s and the list goes on and on. Ready to replace your aging set of wheels with a new (or newer) one? You’ve got your choice of new and used car dealers including Auto Plaza Group, Sam Scism Ford, Turner Chevrolet-Cadillac or Auffenberg Chevrolet. There are a number of local used car dealers throughout the area as well.
Grocery shopping in the Parkland is in the bag with Schnucks, Aldi, Country Mart and Save-ALot in the area. Like the outdoor grocery shopping experience? Visit Crystal and Rich’s Produce, or stop in at the area’s many farmer’s markets during the growing season. Just need a fill-up and a snack? You’ll find a Rhodes 101, C-Barn or Caseys General Store in nearly every local town, along with several locally-owned convenience stops. Shopping Continued on Page 6

Winery, Papa’s Vineyard, Vance Vineyards and more. From Lix Frozen Custard, General Custard’s Re-Treat or Scoops Frozen Custard or Old Village Mercantile for some ice cream or frozen yogurt, to Wise Grounds, Panera Bread Co., Arcadia Valley Roasting Company, or maybe RaeCole’s Coffee Bar or No. 9 Coffee Co. for some warm caffeine, or grab a fresh sandwich at BOGO or Old Tyme Pantry ... there’s something new to try every day. There are plenty of other specialty restaurants, bakeries and shops in the area where you can enjoy a nice meal or snack without spending a great deal of money. Hankering for some chicken wings?
