rad Wooten Auto Body won its category in the 2019 Best of the Parkland

contest. This year, the shop at 401 N. Main Street in Ironton (573-546-2867) bested all of the entries in any of the categories to grab Best of the Parkland Grand Champion honors. The body shop was opened in 2014 by Brad Wooten and his wife, Amie. Wooten’s experience in the auto repair field dates much further back, however. He managed dealership body shops for General Motors and Chrysler for 21 years prior to opening his own shop. “I graduated from Linn State Technical College and was fortunate to be given the chance to manage shops for GM and Chrysler at a young age,” Wooten said. “When I was 42, I had managed dealership shops for 21 years, half my life.” Brad Wooten Auto Body employs 10 people, many of

whom worked for Wooten prior to his opening the shop. The technicians are manufacturer trained, ASE, PPG and I-CAR certified. They work in a 10,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art facility. “We have 15 bays and feature a Col-Met paint booth with baking capabilities, Col-Met computerized paint mixing room, Rotary Lifts, Blackhawk Magna Rack III frame machine, Kansas Jack computerized measuring system, Regulator detail system and Kaeser air compressors and dryers,” Wooten said. Champion Continued from Page 3 Brad Wooten Auto Body is a full service collision repair facility. The shop repairs an average of 15 vehicles per week or 60 per month, and also details three cars a day, every day. It is a direct repair facility for multiple major insurance companies. The shop does automotive glass repairs and replacement, paintless dent removal, automotive accessories, detail packages and more. Brad Wooten Auto Body has six of its own loaner cars on site and a courtesy shuttle for picking up, dropping off, taking customers home or to work. It is also an Enterprise Rent A Car ARMS program facility so when all of its cars are out, Enterprise will pick up customers at the facility and get them on their way. “This is my 28th year managing or owning a shop, so a large majority of our work is repeat customers I have done work for years,” Wooten said. “We are centrally located so we repair a lot of vehicles from here in the Arcadia Valley, the Mineral Area, Annapolis, Lesterville, Caledonia, Belleview, and Fredericktown, all over the area really.

“Some customers I have done their work for all 28 years. We had a customer in the other day. He said ‘Brad I’m 44 years old and you have repaired all my vehicles since I started driving.’ That means a lot to me.” Wooten said his philosophy is to treat customers how you want to be treated and repair vehicles like they are your own. He said customers most like “that we are honest, and we always give them more than they are paying for. Quality and customer service that’s more important to us than anything. “We have customers tell us all the time ‘You can’t even tell it was wrecked,’ “We will continue to provide the customer service we are known for and to exceed your but what we hear the expectations. Wooten said being

recognized as the Best of the Parkland is important for the business and staff. “It truly means the world to us, and we are so appreciative,” he said. “It’s an honor. It means our customers and the public feel the same way about us that we feel about them. “We appreciate them and it lets us know they appreciate us. It also lets all of our outstanding staff know that all of their hard work and craftsmanship doesn’t go unnoticed. I can’t say enough about our staff.” Wooten said he enjoys the Best of the Parkland contest. “We think it’s great,” he said. “It helps recognize many businesses. We really look forward to it every year. I’m sure it’s a lot of work for you guys, but we appreciate the Daily Journal for putting it on.” Wooten said the shop posted the voting link once on the company Facebook page and encouraged customers to vote for Brad Wooten Auto Body along with all of their other favorite businesses, and he is filled with gratitude for those who voted. “Thank you,” he said. “Thank you for supporting and voting for us. We can’t even put into words how humble and appreciative we are to all the voters out there that voted for us.

ften times in our society, car dealers receive somewhat of a bad reputation. That, however, is not the case for Auto Plaza Group who has once again been named Best Auto Dealer in the Parkland. Auto Plaza started in 2012 when a dealership in De Soto was bought out by the group. The company skyrocketed in 2016 when they acquired Crown Motors, a dealership in Ste. Genevieve, the dealership in Fredericktown, and a small dealer-

ship in Marble Hill. Shawna Pettus, co-owner of the Auto Plaza Group, said that they now have about 200 employees in the four-county area. “I would like to thank customers for their support and for being such huge cheerleaders for us,” said Pettus. Pettus boasts that the company offers a “National Price Guarantee” and that people come from all over the United States to purchase vehicles from the group.

“We strive to be the best and we treat our customers like family,” said Pettus. “We want our customers to be repeat customers.” Pettus also said she would like to thank all of her amazing crew at each of the dealerships because without the fine staff, they would not have the reputation they have built over the last few years. Second Place for best dealership goes to Sam Scism Ford-Lincoln, and third place for best dealership goes to Turner Chevrolet-Cadillac.

Best Auto Parts Store W

henever there’s a need for auto parts, it can be intimidating for many to know where to buy or who to

talk to. O’Reilly was voted the best auto parts store because customers know they will offer enthusiastic service, knowledgeable answers and good prices. They try to be the one-stop shop for everybody, selling everything from specialty batteries to wrench sets, synthetic oils to belts and hoses, and even accessories. Anything they don’t have in the store, they can get shipped from a variety of suppliers and sometimes even from dealerships. Services they offer are battery and fluid recycling, battery diagnostic testing, free wiper blade installations, and loaner tools. “We know all of our customers on a first-name basis, and like to help out our community with donations

Best Bridal Boutique he best bridal boutique goes to White Weddings, located in downtown Farmington at 14 E. Columbia St. In early 2016, Kristen White opened the boutique, which specializes in bridal and formal wear, such as wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, men’s wear and accessories. White said customer service is what sets her boutique apart from the others. “One thing we do to try to focus on is customer service,” White said. “We work pretty closely with our brides, getting to know them and what they are looking for.”

The boutique’s website goes on to say, “Although we may have a smaller store, we like to believe we’ve done the hard part for you by narrowing down the overwhelming world of Pinterest dream dresses to the style we know are equally beautiful in person, wearable and affordable.” White said they also try to offer styles that fit into any bride’s budget. “We offer a range of prices, too,” White added, “from the more affordable styles to styles that are a little more intricate and detailed.” White said they help the local brides, of course, but have also helped brides from areas like St. Louis and Poplar Bluff. “We definitely try to reach out a little bit farther than just the area,” White said. Appointments are not required to try on wedding dresses. But they are preferred, according to their website, to provide the bride with undivided attention. he Country Bouquet was named the Best Florist of the Parkland. The business located on Main Street in Ironton has been creating beautiful bouquets for 13 years. “I like to think that our customer service is what sets us apart,” Owner Shelli Lambert said. “That is what comes first with us, along with being able to offer a quality product.” Lambert said they offer fresh flowers, silk arrangements, wreaths, candles and have a gift shop that includes purses, jewelry, wallets and home decor items. She said they also offer tuxedo rentals. “I love it when people say ‘just fix me something I trust you,’” Lambert said. “Then you can be really creative. I am very fortunate to know most of my customer base very well. In knowing their likes we can create something without boundaries. That is my favorite!” Lambert said one of her other favorite things is to create casket sprays. She said she likes to be able to provide the family with the last thing they can do for their loved one. “Seeing people smile when they get their flowers is very gratifying,” Lambert said. “It is very

Best Wedding Venue nce again Daily Journal readers have voted The Barn at Lone Eagle Landing as Wedding Venue of the Parkland. This family owned and operated venue has only been in business for three years. The Barn, located off Route F in Ste. Genevieve, is as it sounds, a rustic barn style hall, but do not let looks deceive. The venue is brand new construction, temperature-controlled and includes a bridal suite cleverly hidden inside the silo. “You can keep it as simple as you’d like and let the character of the building speak for itself or we’ve seen it all dolled up with tulle and

lights everywhere,” Co-owner Crystal Politte said. When the back doors are slid open, the space transforms into a beautiful indoor/outdoor venue with views of the pond and fields of crops. Lights strung above give a touch of light to the patio and a large lawn allows for plenty of space for dancing. Politte said many couples choose to have their entire wedding on the grounds with the ceremony on the lawn, reception in the barn and photos taken amongst the many picturesque locations. Politte said they get to meet the couples over a

year before their big day and feel as if they have become part of the family during the experience. “When it’s over it is like a bad breakup because you don’t see anybody anymore,” Politte said. “We get really invested in our couples and always want them to feel as if they are part of the family.” Politte said the whole operation is only successful because of the whole family working together. She said her sister Chandler is the face of the business, her brother Alex uses his degree in Plant Science to keep the grounds pristine, and her father Tim made the dream come alive. “This whole idea started on a napkin in a Mexican restaurant,” Politte said. “We sketched it out and Dad made it happen.” Runner Up: Lincoln Street Events Center Second Runner Up: Valley Mist Events

Best Barbecue ugarfire Smoke House, located at 630 Walton Dr. in Farmington, has taken the top position in the Barbecue category this year. Farmington natives Patrick and Charles Johnson opened the Farmington location in early 2018. They opened the restaurant to give Farmington a taste of the flavor that they have been cooking up since training at the family’s Olivette location. The two brothers trained at the city location for a couple of years with their cousin Mike, who attended culinary school in France before training under the world-famous chef Emeril Lagasse in Louisiana. Patrick explained that after the success of their city locations, his family was encouraged to franchise a location in Farmington. “It’s nice serving the people you grew up around and seeing Farmington grow as a community in general,” said Patrick. The location has seen great success since opening. Head Chefs Paige Bourbon and Charles keep the fires stoked for the most tender, smokiest barbecue around. The dining area seats approximately 86 people and has a large patio for when the weather is warm. Up to thirty additional barbecue lovers can 16 | Best of the Parkland 2020

fit in the outdoor space. On each of the restaurant’s tables sits seven bottles of different housemade sauces. The signature sauces allow diners to lather up their barbeque with sweet, hot, mustard-based, and even a white horseradish sauce. Just some of the favorites at Sugarfire include ribs, pulled pork, brisket, smoked turkey, and their house-made jalapeno cheddar sausage. Other Sugarfire crowd-pleasers include smoked salmon and brisket cheesesteak Their Big Muddy Sandwich combines smoked sausage and brisket with BBQ sauce and some horseradish for a kick you won’t forget. Of course, what would a barbecue restaurant be without a great burger? The restaurant boasts that their burger rivals the one at their sister restaurant, Hi-Pointe Drive-in, and it’s worth a try to see which one will

get your undying devotion. The Farmington location is open seven days a week. They begin serving deliciousness at 11 a.m. and quit when they run out of food for the day. You can dine-in, carry-out at or even have orders delivered right to you. For a party, game, or any other event, Sugarfire can cater off-site for small, medium, and large events. The first runner up in the Barbeque category this year was Baylee Jo’s Barbeque located at 1315 Highway 21 in Ironton. The second runner up for this category was Big Dick’s BBQ located at 2327 Highway H in Farmington.

win Oaks Vineyard has been voted Best Brewery/ Winery in the Parkland for the fourth year in a row. The winery and vineyard sits on a 180-acre farm with 25 acres of vines owned by the family of brothers Andrew and Brian Hutson. The family remains the primary caretakers of the vineyard with four generations of Hutsons often seen picking grapes at harvest time. The tasting room sits in the middle of the vineyard, where you can taste their award-winning wines, enjoy a glass of cold premium beer or indulge in a cocktail from the full bar. The winery also features live entertainment many weeks and hosts popular events in its large outdoor

patio. The GlassHouse is an all season room which seats up to 250 guests and has a catering kitchen, four big screen TVs, a Bose stereo system, full bar and glass walls for amazing views of the vineyard. Best Fine Dining

West Bar & Grill was selected as the best fine dining restaurant in the Parkland. General Manager Kirk Wishon characterized the restaurant as an upscale bistro that is very familyfriendly. 12 West is located at 12 W. Columbia in Farmington. Owner Brian Hurst opened the restaurant in October of 2004, and it has become a favorite of professionals, people going out for the evening, and families. The clientele includes regular customers from St. Louis who come in two to three times a month. Also, 12 West gets business from people who travel to some of the area wineries. Wishon said the restaurant has one of the most extensive wine lists in the area, and one of the biggest sellers is the whiskey and bourbon menu. There are a number of items which Wishon said they can never take off the menu. “As far as entrees, things of that nature, our steaks, we hand cut all of our steaks in house,” Wishon said. “Our bourbon-glazed pork chops, if I ever took those off the menu, they’d probably burn the building to the ground. We have fresh salmon brought in twice a week.” Wishon said some of more

12

18 | Best of the Parkland 2020

popular appetizers are the fried green tomatoes and the stuffed mushrooms, which have been on the menu exactly the way they are since the day the restaurant opened. 12 West employs 25 people, and Wishon said, in terms of wait staff, personality is key. “The first thing I look for is personality, always smiling, friendly, outgoing, accommodating,” Wishon said. “We have a very low turnover in the front and back of the house. We have been very fortunate.” Wishon said, in the kitchen, he looks for creativity, being able to keep up with the pace, integrity, consistency, and presentation. “Even if it’s a burger, we want that burger plate to look just as pretty as

the plate with the salmon or the filet on it.” The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Saturday. It opens for brunch at 9:30 a.m. and closes Sunday at 8 p.m. 12 West also does full-service catering, corporate lunches, dinner program, bridal and baby showers and rehearsal dinners. The restaurant has an occupancy of about 150 diners. There is also a patio in the back which can seat 50 to 60 people. Runner-up: Catfish Kettle, Farmington; Second Runner-up: Mario’s Italia.

Best Ice Cream /Custard

ix Frozen Custard, at 929 N. Washington in Farmington and at 1123 N. Desloge Dr. in Desloge, has been voted Best Ice Cream/Custard by Parkland voters. Owner Roberta Gettemeier started out in 1987 with her brother’s Lix location in St. Louis, but in 2004, decided to open a location in Farmington, renting a former grocery store on the corner of Washington Street and Hillsboro Road. With burgeoning success, she moved down Hillsboro Road to her present location near Country Mart in 2011. In 2015, she opened in Desloge another Lix Frozen Custard, featuring her distinctive, cow-colored building with the bright red cherry and gigantic, selfie-worthy vanilla ice cream cone. Ice cream and frozen custard aficionados get to combine flavors of concretes, sundaes, milkshakes and malts with dozens of different syrups, candies, nuts and other ingredients, all mixed up together by friendly staff who are ready to greet you with a smile and make a helpful suggestion or two if you’re stymied by all the choices.

L

“I love my staff, they’re so awesome,” Gettemeier said. “And with the coronavirus, it’s amazing, we’re still busy between 3-4 p.m., we got swamped yesterday. Hey, I think people need comfort food right now, it’s a stressful time. “If we can give people a little comfort, a little ‘normal’ with our treats, we’re happy to do it.” Don’t be put off if there’s a long line for the drive-thru—their lobby is currently closed, like most places at the moment. The team at Lix are champs at cranking out frozen treats in a timely fashion, while making it seem like they spent 15 minutes lovingly crafting each one. Still, it’s best to do a little reconnaissance before pulling up, since there are a lot of choices. If you’re new to Lix, you’ll want to try a few popular favorites: The Turtle, Muddy Sneakers, and Cookie Mon-

ster are the top three choices locally, Gettemeier said. The Mint Mud and Gooey Butter Cake are just two examples of several seasonal specialties, so keep an eye out for those, as well. And of course, there’s the Elvis Pretzely, Drumstix, Nutty Monkey, Grasshopper and other regularcombo concretes and sundaes you’ll need to add to your list. Most importantly, to get the latest news, you’ll want to connect with them on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Lix-Frozen-Custard-103976899593/. That’s where you’ll find pictures of their menu, their latest creations, and pictures of friendly, hardworking staff alongside happy customers. Runner-up: Old Village Mercantile. Second runner-up: General Custard’s Re-Treat Best of the Parkland 2020 | 19

Best Steak

inning this year’s category for best steak is Colton’s Steak House and Grill in Farmington. Owner Josh Thiele said first, they pride themselves on their steak at Colton’s. He said hand cutting the steaks daily in-house separates them from other restaurants that offer steak in the area. “That allows us to make some changes and stuff immediately, as opposed to waiting on the supplier,” Thiele said. It doesn’t hurt that the steaks are top quality either, Thiele added. “The meat cutters that we do have, they care about what they send out,” Thiele said. Second, they pride themselves on their family atmosphere. “Having a family environment for people to go out when they have occasions and stuff like that,” Thiele said. Colton’s, located at 1300 Maple St., celebrated its 10-year anniversary in Farmington this past

November and the community has embraced them, according to Thiele. “They are more than supportive,” Thiele said. “I think now with everything that’s going on, I think you really see how much they appreciate us being here and how much they support, especially when we need it.” Runner-up: 12 West; Second runner-up: Carla’s Café.

Best Salad

local favorite has reached a milestone this year—The Pasta House Co.’s Farmington location turns 25 years old on July 13, 2020. It’s also the third year in a row that Parkland voters have nominated them for the “Best Salad” category.

A

A St. Louis tradition, The Pasta House Co. was founded in 1974 by Joe Fresta, the late John P. Ferrara and the late J. Kim Tucci. The family-friendly Italian franchise over the years has added multiple locations designed to provide consistently exceptional food at fair prices in a friendly and clean atmosphere. In 1995, Farmington’s franchise was started by two couples, Mike and Nancy Silvey and Paul and Marlene Brockmiller, who decided it was time for Farmington to get a taste of “big city Italian” without having to make the hour’s drive to The Hill. But about that popular salad. The menu makes it sound so simple: Romaine and iceberg lettuce

Silvey estimated on a busy night, they go through a veritable garden’s worth of greens. The artichokes are optional, of course. It’s also why, in addition to its mouthwatering pastas, entrees, appetizers and drinks – and who can resist those fantastic rolls — The Pasta House Co. also sells a line of salad dressing at all of its locations and at participating grocers. Runner-up: Carla’s Café, Bismarck; Second Runner-up: Mario’s Italia, Farmington.

Best Wait Staff arla’s Café was voted Best of the Parkland for Best Wait Staff. Opened in 2017, people of Bismarck and the wider area have quickly warmed to its western atmosphere furnished with beautiful antiques, and especially to the welcoming and cheerful attitude of its wait staff. “This was a lifelong dream of mine,” owner Carla Craig said. “I started off as a waitress when I was 13 years old, and it was all I had done since I was 13.” It’s clear that the years of experience have paid off to her staff and customers. Carla said that she tries to work every day until close so she can get direct feedback from customers and build more personal connections with them. She said that people like to see the owners, and that places she’s observed

C

before started to go down when the owners weren’t present. Much of the feedback she receives is positive, and a lot of it is about her staff. “We have tons of people say how we cater to our customers,” she said. “People always say how friendly our staff is.” She said that a table had messaged her on her web page to say that the wait staff was good with kids and overdid themselves with all of the customers that came through the door. “I’ve worked in a lot of restaurants, and the wait staff is superb, I think.” Due to its wide variety of food, and daily specials that often change, the wait staff is tasked especially to keep

up with and suggest the new desserts or items to customers. Carla’s mother sometimes makes desserts like homemade cobblers, banana nut cake, or whatever she is inspired to make that week. Carla’s Cafe can be found at 818 East Main St. in Bismarck. Runner-up: Catfish Kettle; Second Runner-up: Hub’s Pub. Best of the Parkland 2020 | 21

s e t i r o v Fa Best Annual Event opping out the Annual Event category is Farmington’s Country Days, an annual festival that brings out tens of thousands from throughout the region to enjoy three days of family-friendly fun; top-notch musical entertainment and rides; and a great selection of food and product vendors to choose from. Country Days began 42 years ago — in the year 1978 — as a way to boost community spirit, along with a means to generate funds for the purchase of land for a city industrial park on the west side of U.S. Highway 67. In order

T

to raise the needed funds, then-Farmington Chamber of Commerce President Mit Landrum and the chamber board knew it would take more than just a weekend sidewalk sale to be successful at accomplishing both goals. The first weekend celebration looked much like it does today — but, on a much smaller scale. That’s understandable because back then Farmington’s population topped out at about 6,000 residents. Today the population of Farmington is just “a nose” under 20,000. This year’s Country Days — with the theme of “Country Days/Carnival Nights — is set for June 5-7. The dates may have to be adjusted, however, due to whatever COVID-19 restrictions are in effect at the time. n most cases, buying a gun is not an everyday experience. For some people, the experience is frequent and for some, the experience never happens at all. Regardless of your needs, Ben Minkel, owner of Cedar Falls Tactical, has everything to meet his customers’ needs. Cedar Falls Tactical is located at 3519 Cedar Falls Rd. just outside Desloge. Customers have voted Cedar Falls Tactical number one in the Firearm/Hunting Retailer category. Cedar Falls Tactical opened in 2008. Minkel had been a machine shop teacher at UniTec Career Center in Bonne Terre for 11 years. “I always had an interest in guns and started out doing gun shows,” said Minkel. The business just continued to grow from there and in the summer of 2009, Minkel resigned his position as a teacher and jumped head first into the gun business. The store sells everything from hand guns to tactical guns.

I

Cedar Falls Tactical is also a licensed firearm manufacturer and builds duty weapons for 28 different law enforcement agencies. “We have about 1,000 firearms on site,” said Minkel. In 2018, Minkel bought The Fishing Hole and expanded the business to include fishing equipment. The business also acquired Mega Sports’ archery department. “We are really a full-service sport-

ing goods store at this point,” said Minkel. Minkel said the reason they are there is because of their customers and without a strong customer base, they would have never made it, especially considering the business is two miles outside of town on a back road. “Customers and customer service are the most important part of this business,” said Minkel. “We like for the store to be a ‘destination’ for people.” Runner-up: Arcadia Sporting Goods; Second Runner-up is Rob’s Guns. The staff at Hearing Care Partners at 620 Walton Dr. in Farmington works as one family and when you walk in the door as a patient or visitor you become part of that family immediately. Dr. Karen Melton said her staff works really hard to support each other and strive to ensure the culture is one where the patient comes first. “Whenever you have a group that works so much together and it’s such an easy flowing process, it makes work not work,” Melton said. Hearing Care Partners, previously known as Audiology and Hearing Care, went through a transition joining 10 other groups in Northern Missouri. “It’s all kinds of better for the

arkland Health Mart Pharmacy, with five locations, has been rated the top pharmacy by Parkland voters. Perhaps one of the main reasons voters prefer Parkland Health Mart is the local convenience the locally-owned chain offers. Its MedSync program aligns customers’ refills to sync to a single date, so only one monthly visit to the pharmacy is required to pick up all prescriptions. With compliance packaging, all of a customer’s medications are organized by date and time of day. All med packs are clearly labeled and are great for traveling. “Everyone leads very busy lives these days, so it’s important to find healthcare solutions that integrate easily into your schedule,” said Business Manager Debbie Hamby. “We offer a lot of ways for our customers to stay in touch and do business with us, whether that’s through a phone call, receiving free delivery to their home or work place, rolling up in our drivethrus, even using our new curbside service or communicating with us through our mobile app, which offers a secure text messaging feature.

P

32 | Best of the Parkland 2020

“When you pair that with the compliance packaging and MedSync services we offer free of charge, it makes going to the pharmacy a much easier task and one that you won’t tend to put off. “Our employees go out of their way every day to provide an excellent customer experience as well. In our opinion, there’s no better choice than doing business with a truly local hometown pharmacy!” Another of Parkland Health Mart’s many services is the ability to compound medications. Just as pharmacists did hundreds of years ago, Parkland Health Mart pharmacists are able to create tinctures and tonics by hand, weighing and compounding them into various formulas tailored to individual needs

— a service customers have found is even useful for pets or farm animals. Each store’s medical equipment and supply departments offer a full range of equipment, aids, diabetic shoes, and more. They accept Medicare, Medicaid and third-party billing, in addition to cash. Plus, this local, small-town pharmacy stays on-point when it comes to trends and innovations. Curious about that newfangled Squatty Potty? They sold them. Want to buy a heatable Warmie plush toy to keep your kiddo company when they have a cold? They have a zoo from which to choose. Each store has a “Pharmer’s Market” section that offers locally produced products, such as locally-sourced honey, handmade soaps, handmade skincare products, and they are an exclusive superstore for SicWicks candles, a local homebased candle company in Farmington that offers unique packaging and scents for their candles and wax Pharmacy continued to Page 34

Best Physical Therapy

Y

ou’ve been in an accident and the road to recovery is going to be a long one. What’s the best place for physical therapy in the Parkland? Voters have decreed it’s Farmington Sports and Rehabilitation Center, with its Farmington location at 602 Maple Valley Dr., and its newer location, opened in 2018, at 1136 N. Desloge Dr. in Greentree Plaza in Desloge. “We couldn’t be more pleased with our facility in Desloge and the tremendous support we have from the residents in the communities in the area,” said David Buerck. “We had been looking at expanding to the northern part of the county, and since we have the privilege of covering North County High School athletic events as their official sports medicine provider, we decided to take the leap and open up our second location.” Offering physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, several among the clinic’s staff have specialized in areas of lymphedema management (swelling), vestibular therapy (dizziness / balance), women’s and men’s health therapy (incontinence, pelvic pain, etc.), and work-specific rehabilitation. “We also partner with many businesses and industries in the region to

provide postoffer / preemployment testing, to see whether a prospective employee can perform the essential demands of the job, ergonomics and work hardenings,” Buerck said. “Of course, since ‘Sports’ is in our name, we are proudly the official sports medicine provider for the Farmington Knights and the North County Raiders as well.” One of the clinic’s strengths is the relationships its employees form with the patients, Buerck said. “Our therapists have the ability to work one-onone with patients in a spacious clinic, and our patients can have the amount of privacy they need and not worry about being in close quarters to other patients.” “We value each and every patient, and want to make sure they have a positive experience. They become part of our family and we’re thrilled to celebrate milestones with them.” Buerck has been with the clinic since 1997, after he graduated from University of MissouriColumbia. He served as a staff physical therapist for his first few years before being promoted to clinic director/administrator in January 2000. “I couldn’t have chosen a better place

to not only start my career, but also a place where I have been able to work with amazing people over the years. I have been challenged to grow professionally and enhance my leadership skills,” he said. “But more important, my staff is truly like a second family. We genuinely care for each other and the patients we serve. It is our mission to make a difference in the lives of those we serve, and my team inspires me every day with their care, compassion, and dedication. “When I graduated from the physical therapy program at Mizzou, our class was told the average tenure of a physical therapist was two years at one location. “I’m honored to say these past 23 years have been more than I could have asked for -- definitely longer than the two-year average-- and I can’t wait to see what our team accomplishes as we move together in the future.” Runner-up: Southbrook-Skilled Nursing by Americare; Second runner-up: Axes Physical Therapy. It can be reached at 573783-6000. In addition to the pharmacy, it offers UPS drop-off services. While all the locations and buildings are different, Parkland Health Mart Pharmacy strives to make sure the fundamentals are consistent at each place: Excellent customer service, continual dedication to their customers, and extensive support and outreach in their local communities. “Even though our stores offer the same services, we are NOT cookie-cutter,” says Hamby. “Each person who does business with us is a unique individual with unique needs, and we take the time to get to know those needs and tailor our interactions with them so they get the best of what we have to offer. “We are your healthcare partner, not just your provider.” Runner-up: Walgreens. Best Appliance /Furniture Store isher Furniture was named Best Appliance/Furniture Store of the Parkland. This family-owned business has been a staple of the Ironton community for more than 50 years. Vicki Oberle said the family were all born and raised in the community. “Our clients are our friends and neighbors,” Oberle said. “Our community is the driving force behind our business every single day! If our community doesn’t thrive, we don’t thrive!” Oberle said it is crucial that their customers not only have a great sales and delivery experience but have great service for years to come. “They know who we are, who are families are and where to find us for any issue,” Oberle said. “When my father, Don Moses, first came to Fisher Furniture over 50 years ago, he would sell an item, lock the store and deliver it with

F

my uncle, Joe Weiss. My mother, Patsyie, did the books and together they, with my Uncle Ron Gibbs, built this business one sale at a time.” Oberle said her parents and uncles taught all of them to care about the customer by keeping the serve in service. “We are blessed to still have Mom and Dad with us, but my Uncle Joe and Uncle Ron would be shocked by how sales have evolved from street traffic to internet traffic,” Oberle said. “It gives us terrific opportunities to reach so many customers.”

Oberle said it feels wonderful to be recognized in this way. “As a small business in a small community, we work hard for every single sale,” Oberle said. “But the numbers are not how we measure our success. It’s in the satisfaction of our customers. “When they are happy, we are happy! And to be recognized for our hard work is rewarding.” Runner-up: Patsy’s Furniture Inc., Park Hills; Second runner-up: Willette Home Furniture & Appliance, Bonne Terre.

inishing first in the Assisted Living Community category is Farmington Presbyterian Manor (FPM), 500 Cayce St., which has served St. Francois County since 1962. As a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), FPM offers local and area seniors independent living, assisted living, memory care, and long-term and skilled care. It is one of 17 locations — along with two hospices in Missouri and Kansas — owned by Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. FPM appeared on the U.S. News and World Report “Best Nursing Homes” list for 2018-2019. In addition, the community also made the new U.S. News and World Report “Best Short-Stay Rehabs” list. The

senior living community received the highest score of “High Performing” in order to be eligible for both lists. FPM’s popular Art is Ageless program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity. The exhibit features artwork created by local artists who are 65 and older, including a number of Presbyterian Manor residents. Nearing completion is FPM’s new 3,500-square-foot Hull Family Fellowship Center that, once completed, will provide a large

meeting space that will accommodate 50-60 people. The outdoor portion of the grounds is designed with special outdoor lighting, a garden and walking paths. Since receiving a private $1 million donation to help kick-off the fellowship center project, FPM has raised about $1,250,000 in additional donations to finish the project. Best Hospice est Hospice Care in the Parkland for this year again goes to Serenity HospiceCare located at 5272 Flat River Rd. in Park Hills. Serenity is an independent, not-for-profit, faithbased organization. Serenity is overseen by a local board and is the area’s oldest hospice. 2019 marked the 30year anniversary for the business. When the hospice started in 1989, hospice care was uncommon. Hospice care during those times was usually only available in big cities and only feasible for the wealthy. Serenity focuses on providing quality end-of-life care and allows for individuals to take their last breathe at home rather than in a hospital. Money doesn’t matter even if someone doesn’t have insurance or cannot afford care, they will still provide them the same quality care as anyone else. Through grants, fundraisers, and donations, the company is able to pro-

vide services to anyone who is in need. Patients with Serenity receive a nurse visit on average of twice weekly and a Certified Nurse Aid visits the home three times weekly. The hospice is on call 24 hours, seven days weekly. When the nurse feels that the end of life is close, patients then receive around-the-clock care. Runner-up: Heart & Soul Hospice; Second Runner-up: Preferred Hospice.

g n i p p o h S Best Convenience Store onvenience Barn or “CBarn” was chosen as the best convenience store in Parkland. The first C-Barn opened in 1992 on Ste. Genevieve Avenue in Farmington. It was originally opened by Don Johnson as a retirement job along with his son Jim. There was no gasoline, just the convenience store. The barn motif was the idea of Don’s wife Pat. “It was more work than he anticipated as a retirement job,” said Don’s other son, Ray. Ray Johnson said he was working in St. Louis in late 1994 and came down to help with the store. The business started growing, and Ray and Jim opened a second store. Then, the brothers bought out their father and became equal partners. The Johnsons now own eight C-Barn stores. There are three C-Barn locations in Farmington, and one each in Desloge, Park Hills, Fredericktown, Ste. Genevieve, and Bloomsdale. The Fredericktown C-Barn is the newest and was opened in 2013. Ray said they have no plans to expand or open at any new locations. Six stores sell Phillips 66 gasoline. Ste. Genevieve is a BP and Fredericktown is non-branded. People can get gas, soda or coffee, and a bag of chips a lot of different places. One of the things Ray thinks people like about C-Barn is that the stores are locally-owned. “It allows a little more flexibility to cater each store to its geographic location,” Ray said. “When we had that first store, we had a lot of people tell us the reason they came in there was because we treated them well and they appreciated the politeness and the service they received.” The company employs about 100 people, and those employees are very important according to Ray.

C

“I realized through the years, if I have a manager and a staff in Bloomsdale or here on Karsch, that staff and the manager make a difference in the volume of sales. So I really hope that people have a good experience with our personnel and they are happy with the service they are getting from them.” Ray said he knows people don’t frequent the C-Barn locations because of him. “They are going to use the store because they like the manager and they like the service of that manager or there is an employee over on Ste. Gen. Avenue that they really like and treats them well. That seems to be the key to everything is trying to keep a friendly, nice staff.” Johnson said customer service is the most important thing of all. “It’s one thing we preach about weekly, sometimes daily,” he said. “One of our big aspects is treat everybody fairly and the same. Try to give the best service you can.” Runner-up: Roy’s Convenience Stores; Second Runnerup: Rhodes 101 Stop. Best of the Parkland 2020 | 41

The Giving Tree Boutique, 1136 N. Desloge Drive, was named by the store’s owner, Ashley Harrison, for the popular children’s book by the same name. This year the store was selected once again by voters as the Best Specialty Store in Desloge. Having its own distinctive style and sense of community, the store offers a delightful combination of shopping and giving back to the community as the store donates 10 percent of each month’s sales to a local charity. Giving Tree offers children’s and women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, specialized soaps, lotions, candles and more. In the spirit of giving back, Harrison only buys merchandise for the store from vendors that are also charitable-minded. Located directly across the street from Lix Frozen

The 2020 Specialty Shop winner in Farmington is Sweetheart Chocolates on the corner of Jackson and Harrison streets. “We just survived our 10th Valentine’s Day,” said owner Connie Cavelli. “Everybody loves chocolate. I have such nice customers, they are always friendly when they come in and happy when they leave.” Valentine’s Day is a very busy time of the year including a brisk business in chocolate-covered strawberries. Although they have the gamut of milk, white and dark chocolates, Cavelli noted that they have a product line much larger than just their specialty. “We have truffles, sweet and sour, gummies, chewy, gooey, nuts and some crazy sodas,” she said. “We have the M&M Colorworks station. That’s 21 different colors of M&M’s, it’s good for sporting events or team colors and school colors. We do custom baskets. Leona’s Porch Boutique was named Best Specialty Shop (Fredericktown) of the Park-

land. “What sets our store apart from others would be the foundation of our small business,” Owner Kim Huber said. “We are run by family and fueled by faith.” Huber said the biggest priority of the shop is to provide the community with a place to find an array of items from clothing and gifts to home décor right in their hometown. She said her favorite items in the store come from the Nora Fleming Collection. “This collection is full of beautiful pieces that can be used for entertaining like our cheese boards or everyday purposes like our paper towel holders,” Huber said. “Each piece has a spot for what the collection refers to as a mini. The minis are unique handpainted attachments that vary from special occasions, seasons, holidays, sports, and more.” Leona’s Porch Boutique’s original location is in Perryville and Huber said they are sad to announce they will be closing the Fredericktown location to make more time for family. “We are encouraging our Fredericktown customers to continue to follow us on our Facebook page and Instagram,” Huber said. “We are sad to be leaving Fredericktown but are so happy about our grandbaby.” Huber said Leona’s Porch Boutique will be offering free delivery to the Fredericktown area. “There aren’t enough words to describe the feeling but if I had to pick a couple they would be thankful and honored,” Huber said. “I can’t express my appreciation enough to those that voted for us.” Runner-up: Tis the Season. 44 | Best of the Parkland 2020

For the third year in a row, the Old Village Mercantile in Caledonia is a Best Specialty

Store. Owner Nina Gilliam said shopping at her store in its 1909 two-story historic general mercantile building is an experience for the whole family. “We have kids who love to come in and bring their parents or grandparents,” Gilliam said. “And the grandparents and parents love the store as well because there is something for everybody.” On the first floor, you’ll find a full-service coffee bar with over 60 varieties from around the world, around 600 varieties of candy and fudge, homemade ice cream, and Amish goods, like jams and jellies. Their homemade ice cream is something they pride themselves on. Made by retired teacher Randy Huff, Gilliam said you have to travel to St. Louis to find ice cream like his. “He really takes a lot of pride in making his ice cream,” Gilliam said, “and getting really creative with his flavors.” On the second floor, you’ll find all sorts of antiques, Specialty Continued on Page 46 Best of the Parkland 2020 | 45
