To celebrate Mother’s Day, here are some eyebrow-raising records set by mothers all over the world. OLDEST MOTHER TO CONCEIVE NATURALLY According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest woman to conceive naturally was Dawn Brooke from the United Kingdom. In 1997, she became pregnant at 59 years old, and went on to give birth to a healthy baby boy. SMALLEST MOTHER Stacey Herald, an American woman with a rare genetic condition measuring just 2 feet, 4 inches tall, became the world’s smallest mother in 2007. She gave birth to a total of three children, despite her doctors warning her that being pregnant could kill her. LARGEST GATHERING OF NURSING MOTHERS On May 4, 2006, more than 3,700 mothers gathered at a stadium in Manila, Philippines to breast-feed. The event was held to promote breast-feeding in the country and to break the previous Guinness World record. LARGEST NUMBER OF CHILDREN The record for largest number of children goes to the wife of Russian peasant, Feodor Vassilyev. She’s said to have given birth to 69 babies between 1725 and 1765. She had 16 sets of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.
What do moms really want for Mother’s Day? Are you having trouble finding the perfect Mother’s Day present? If so, then perhaps you should consider that what your mom really wants is time — both to share with her loved ones and to enjoy by herself. Here are a few ways to give it to her. PLAN A DAY OF ACTIVITIES Plan a full day of activities for the family so Mom can sit back and enjoy spending time with her loved ones, without the hassle of having to manage itineraries, make reservations or organize any of the other details. DO THE SPRING CLEANING Deep clean the kitchen, organize the closet or wash all the windows.
You can even hire a cleaning company to do the job; you’ll score the brownie points without having to lift a finger. SORT THE FAMILY PHOTOS Many families have countless digital photographs on their computers that could stand to be organized. Others have piles of printed pictures that need to be sorted. Give Mom a reason to smile by tidying up the photos and presenting them to her in an album. Be sure to spend some time reminiscing with her as she flips through it. OFFER HER A DAY OFF If she’s got young kids, hire a babysitter for the day. This will give her a much needed break and the chance to do whatever she wants. If you really want to spoil her, send her to a spa to get pampered. Mom doesn’t really need things for Mother’s Day. What she really wants is a shorter to-do list, a bit of down time and to enjoy the company of her family.

Four mothers who made history
These four women not only left their mark on their children, they also made innovations that changed the world. SIRIMAVO BANDARANAIKE, POLITICIAN (1916-2000) When she was elected prime minister of Sri Lanka in 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world’s first female non-hereditary head of government in modern history. She served in this role for three non-consecutive terms.
VERA RUBIN, ASTRONOMER (1928-2016) American astronomer Vera Florence Cooper Rubin made a major scientific breakthrough when studying the rotation of galaxies early in her career. She discovered that galaxies rotate too fast to hold their shape if the only thing holding them together is the combined gravitational force of their stars. Her observations and calculations led to the theory that dark matter holds them together. It’s theorized that there’s as much as six times more of this invisible matter in the universe as there is visible matter. Dr. Rubin was equally known for her work making astronomy more accessible to women, and she mentored many aspiring female astronomers. Throughout her groundbreaking career, Dr. Rubin raised four children who all went on to achieve PhDs in the sciences.
Two of her three children followed her into politics. Her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, was the fifth president of Sri Lanka, and her son, Anura Bandaranaike, held numerous positions in parliament, notably Speaker, minister of higher education and minister of foreign affairs. MARIE CURIE, PHYSICIST AND CHEMIST (1867-1934) Not only was Marie Curie the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, she also remains the only person to have ever received Nobel Prizes in two different sciences. In 1906, she shared the award for physics with her husband, Pierre Curie, and her colleague, Henri Becquerel, for their research on radiation. In 1911, she won the prize for chemistry for the discovery of the elements polonium (named for her native Poland) and radium. Her research was crucial in the development of X-ray equipment. Marie and Pierre weren’t the only ones in their family to win Nobel Prizes. Their daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, shared the prize for chemistry with her husband, Frédéric Juliot-Curie, in 1935.
VALENTINA TERESHKOVA, COSMONAUT (1937) On June 6, 1963, 26 year old Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel to space. During her three-day solo flight aboard the space capsule Volstok 6, she orbited the earth 48 times. As a young woman, Tereshkova worked in a textile plant and skydived as a hobby. Her interest in skydiving played a part in her being chosen out of more than 400 candidates to be among the first group of female cosmonauts. After her historic flight, she went on to obtain a doctorate in aerospace engineering. Tereshkova married fellow cosmonaut Adrian Nikolayev and had a daughter named Elena. As the first child born to two parents who had been to space, Elena was the subject of medical interest. No medical issues were found, however, and Elena grew up to become a doctor.

Dealing with Stress
A
ccording to the Office on Women’s Health, women report higher levels of stress than men.
This could be because women are more likely to work the second shift — doing the full-time job of household and family management in addition to working a full-time job. Chronic stress can have consequences like irritability, nervousness, depression, headaches and stomachaches; it can impact a woman’s ability to get pregnant, have negative effects on pregnancy and affect how she adjusts after childbirth. Stress also can affect menstruation and sexual desire and could make symptoms of PMS worse. OWH suggested several ways to get a handle on your stressors and how you respond to them to help you live a healthier, less stressful life. 1. Know your stressors. Write down which situations cause the most stress and how you respond. Taking notes can help you find patterns, which can allow you to prepare for those moments and take steps to alleviate or mitigate the stress you feel. 2. Set and enforce boundaries. If you feel overwhelmed with projects, deadlines or other demands on your time, identify your priorities and cut back on nonessential tasks. Learn to say no — at work, with your friends and family, with volunteer and church obligations. 3. Use your support system. Talk to family and friends and ask for their advice and support. Explain what you need from them and enlist their help in reducing stress. Consider talking to a counselor; even a
couple of sessions can help give you coping tools. 4. Make sleep a priority. This includes both quantity and quality of sleep. Changing hormones women experience because of menstruation and pregnancy can contribute to a higher rate of insomnia and other sleep problems; insufficient sleep at night can lead to lower productivity during the day and weakened immunity and can trigger or exacerbate a mental health condition. OWH recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Aim to go to bed and get up at the same times each day and reduce distractions in your bedroom. 5. Set one goal for better health. You can’t fix everything, but you can find one habit that boosts your health that you have the energy to tackle. That can be taking a walk during your lunch break, taking the stairs or spending less time looking at your phone.

Tried-and-true ways to raise a confident kid
Praise children when they do their best, but avoid praising kids when they don’t try their hardest or if they are still working toward solving a problem they haven’t yet figured out. In lieu of praise, provide encouragement and urge youngsters to try again and practice. Value their ideas.
Ask children for age-appropriate advice, suggests the growth mindset company Big Life Journal. Showing kids their ideas are worthy can instill confidence. Skip the rescue operation.
Parents often are quick to swoop in and try to prevent kids from feeling hurt or discouraged. However, according to Robert Brooks, PhD, who coauthored the book “Raising Resilient Children,” it’s alright for kids to fail and feel sad or angry. Success is learned by overcoming obstacles rather than having all obstacles removed. Above all, children who are loved and supported can develop confidence through the years with some well-placed guidance.
C
hildren raised to be confident have the tools to be resilient in a challenging world. Confidence helps children handle peer pressure, stress, obstacles, and much more. There’s a fine line between developing confidence and raising kids who are overly boastful. Parents, teachers and other influential figures can employ various research-based strategies to start boosting kids’ confidence.
Clean Secure Convenient
Allow children to make mistakes and learn from them.
Mistakes happen, and children benefit from making mistakes and learning from them. Children who fail, pick themselves up and try again are learning lessons of resiliency. Their confidence develops as they pick themselves up again, learn from their mistake and ultimately meet with success. Resist the temptation to “fix” everything.
Parents may get hung up on trying to improve on their children’s efforts to make it perfect. This may occur with school work. According to the mental health wellness resource Psychology Today, constant intervention undermines children’s confidence and prevents them from learning for themselves. Model and teach positivity.
It can be easy to fall into a pattern of saying things like, “I’ll never be able to do that” or “It’s too difficult.” But parents must remember that their children take their cues from mom and dad. Parents who stay positive in

Pros and cons to giving kids allowances
P
arents can employ various strategies, including assigning chores, to instill a sense of responsibility in their children. The natural segue from chores is to offer compensation for the jobs that children are doing. Allowances can provide foundations for parents to teach kids about working for a living. Kids are able to grasp the concept that money doesn’t come without hard work. Also, allowances paint the picture that one’s financial resources are commensurate with the effort he or she puts in. Giving allowances also can help teach children how to manage money, plan ahead and make spending choices about what’s most important, according to the parenting guide Raise Smart Kids. Allowances can be tough to figure out. For example, parents may not know how to determine the rate and
frequency of payouts. According to Lewis Mandell, a former dean of business at the State University of New York at Buffalo, giving a child an allowance, especially a regular, unconditional allowance that the child can depend on, isn’t the right way to approach allowances. Children may begin to view this allowance as an entitlement. In fact, Mandell’s research on teens in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia found, without exception, that teens who received a regular unconditional allowance had diminished financial literacy, lower levels of motivation and an increased aversion to work. But when handled properly, allowances can be important tools. Here are some additional benefits to allowances. •Allowances can provide incentive to get chores done. •Allowances can motivate students to work hard at school. •Allowances can include a required portion to be donated, teaching kids the importance of being charitable. Learning the correlation between work and compensation is a lesson that starts in childhood. Allowances can be an important part of kids’ early financial education.
Family cycling: An enjoyable escape
G
oing for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earthconscious and convenient, but it also is a fun and popular activity that anyone can enjoy. Around 1.6 million residents of New York City ride a bike at least once a month, and in Portland, bike riding rose by 3 percent each year since 2012, according to Bikemunk, a website dedicated to helping people understand bikes, especially in the context of making a purchase. The Alliance for Biking & Walking discovered that 0.6 percent of all commuters in the United States biked to work in 2013, up from 0.5 percent in 2009 and 0.4 percent in 2005. But many people are embracing cycling as an entertaining form of recreation that the entire family can enjoy. Adults may have fond memories of their own cycling adventures as children that they want to pass down to their kids. Since families may feature cyclists with various levels of experience, it can be safe to employ certain strategies in the hopes that everyone gets the most out of their time in the cycling saddle. Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for
them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that leads riders to a playground or one that circles a scenic lake. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to anticipate stopping along the way. Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Check bikes before departing. Make sure tires are inflated and everything else is in working order. Bring a small tool kit along in case a repair needs to be made. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon and get some exercise.

The star of life: a universal symbol of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Since 1974, the third full week of May has been designated National EMS Week. This annual occasion, which takes place this year from May 19 to 25, is marked by events that strive to pay tribute to the dedicated men and women who serve in America’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Our national EMS responders treat 25 to 30 million patients each year and the workforce encompasses four levels of trained medical professionals: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic. One symbol that’s universally associated with EMS in the U.S. and around the world is the star of life. This symbol is used to indicate where emergency medical care can be found and is typically seen on ambulances, emergency medical equipment, uniforms worn by EMS personnel, medical textbooks and medications. The star of life is a blue, six-pointed star with a white border. At its center, the star usually features a staff with a serpent wrapped around it. This staff is linked with Asclepius, an ancient
Greek deity associated with medicine and healing. The Rod of Asclepius is a common symbol for the medical profession across the globe. The six points of the star represent the six main stages of emergency medical care performed by EMS providers. These are: • Detection • Reporting • Response • On-scene care • Care in transit • Transfer to definitive care The next time you see an EMS worker wearing the distinctive star of life badge, make sure to thank them for their commitment to emergency medical care. To learn more about National EMS Week in 2019 and the critical work of EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics across the country, visit ems.gov.

Memorial Day: Decorating Graves
Monday, May 27, 2019 is Memorial Day, a time for honoring the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States military. Many Americans across the country observe this solemn occasion by visiting cemeteries and decorating veterans’ graves with flags and flowers. In fact, Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day. Decoration Day began several years after the Civil War ended; a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other war in history and led to the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. Though it’s unclear where exactly the tradition of adorning soldiers’ graves with flowers originated, the city that gets the credit is Waterloo, New York. (The town was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966.) Starting in May 1866, Waterloo began hosting an annual community celebration honoring fallen soldiers. During the event, businesses closed and citizens decorated soldiers’ graves with flowers. Decorating Continued To Page 15
Memorial Day is the day when Americans remember and honor military personnel who lost their lives while serving their country. Though its unofficial designation as the start of summer makes Memorial Day weekend a time of celebration for many people, the families of fallen and active service members often find Memorial Day weekend has its fair share of heartache as well. Families of fallen service members who lost their lives defending their country tend to find solace in ceremonies honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. But there are other ways civilian men and women can honor both active and fallen service members in their communites. Participate in community events that honor fallen service members. Many communities host Memorial Day parades to honor fallen soldiers. It can be comforting to the families of fallen soldiers to see fellow members of their community attend the parade and public memorials. Such civilian support lets family members of fallen soldiers know that fellow members of their community appreciate and do no forget the sacrifices made by their loved ones. Include families of fallen and active service members in your weekend activities. Memorial Day weekend is a three-day weekend at the end of May, when the weather is warming up in much of the country. The weekend marks the return of backyard barbecues or pool parties, and such events are a great opportunity for civilians to invite the families of fallen service members over to share some fun in the sun. Memorial Day can be an especially difficult time for the loved ones of fallen service members, and even the few hours of relief that a barbecue, pool party or picnic can provide can make a welcome respite from an otherwise difficult weekend.
Make a charitable donation. Numerous charities exist to support soldiers and their families. Such charities exist to support the families of fallen soldiers, injured soldiers or even those families struggling while a family member is on active deployment. Men and women who want to help can do so by making a charitable donation. And such donations do not have to be financial. The Hero MilesSM program, for example, allows men and women to donate their frequent flyer miles to wounded, injured or ill service members or their families. This allows service members who meet certain criteria to be given a round-trip airline ticket from a medical center to their home or to attend an authorized event. In addition, service members can give a round-trip ticket to enable family members or close friends to visit them while they are receiving medical treatment. Since its inception, the program, which is administered by the nonprofit Fisher House Foundation, has provided more than 36,000 airline tickets worth more than $55 million. To learn more, visit www.fisherhouse.org. Numerous other charities exist to help service members and their families in a variety of ways. Organize events in your community. Every community benefits from the efforts of active service members and the efforts of those service members who gave their lives in service of their country. Men and women who want to express their gratitude for such service can organize events to do just that. Speak to local merchants and encourage them to offer discounts to military members and their families throughout Memorial Day weekend. Or organize an ice cream social for the children of active or fallen service members. Such events can be uplifting for the families of service members while raising community awareness of the important role our soldiers play.

Tips to tame morning mania Assign bathroom times so no one is competing for space in the morning.
Prepare as much as you can the evening before.
Few things can derail a day more quickly than a stressful morning. It can be hard to recover one’s good spirits when the first part of the day is a frenzied rush mired in chaos. Julie Morgenstern, an organizing and productivity consultant and New York Times best-selling author, coaches families on how to better manage their morning routines. Too often parents rush out the door only to wonder if backpacks are filled, shoes are matching or the day’s schedule is known by all. A hurried morning atmosphere can become routine if time isn’t taken to quell the chaos. These tips can make mornings less hectic for all involved. Establish a place for everything. Know where belongings are at all times. That means established spaces for frequently used items (backpacks, shoes, briefcases, etc.) and consistency in regard to returning those items to their respective places each day. Then it’s just a matter of grab-and-go in the mornings. Do more the evening before. If your’s is a family that strives on eking
out as much beauty rest as possible and doesn’t want to set the alarm an hour or so early, then you must be diligent at night. Make and pack lunches, set aside paperwork for the office, lay out clothing, pack sports equipment bags, and do anything else to make mornings less hectic. Eliminate distractions. Certain things can lead to distractions, which can make it hard to get things done in the morning. Establish rules that there will be no electronic devices, such as televisions or tablets, used in the morning. Assign jobs. Dole out morning tasks depending on ability and age. Someone may be in charge of popping waffles in the toaster oven, while another may be responsible for letting the dog out in the yard. Delegating can spread out the work so one person is not overwhelmed. Set a bathroom schedule. Mornings can be challenging when multiple people are competing for bathroom space, especially when everyone needs to be out the door at the same time. Create a chart with assigned times and set a strict time limit. Parents can shower in the evening to save more time. With this advice in hand, many families can enjoy more relaxing mornings.
Time-saving tip Working parents frequently say they feel stressed, tired, rushed, and short on quality time with their children, friends, partners, or hobbies, according to a 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center. Mornings are a time of day when things can get especially hectic, as each person is trying to get out the door on time. Doing things the night before can take some pressure off of morning routines, and setting up breakfast in advance can be one of these prearranged tasks. While many people use slow cookers for ready-to-eat dinners when then get home at night, these devices also can be put to use in the morning. Purchase a slow cooker with a timer and set it to go on sometime in the early morning hours. Fill the cooker with oatmeal, eggs, farina, or any make-ahead breakfast recipe so breakfast will be cooked and hot when everyone wakes up. The aroma of a homemade breakfast may even entice people out of bed. Homemade food can be doled out quickly, and it’s also likely to be more filling than breakfast bars or quick snacks nabbed before going out the door.
C
hildren reach many milestones throughout their lives. While a child’s first step and first tooth may garner the bulk of the milestone glory, other moments are just as significant. One milestone that parents may not look forward to is their kids’ first day away from mom and dad. For many children, that day is spent at daycare. Parents may get emotional when dropping their young children off at daycare for the first time, and those emotions might only grow stronger if children cry when Mom and Dad walk away. Fortunately, there are ways to help kids adjust to starting daycare. Drop by before the first dropoff day. Many daycare facilities encourage
parents to visit the facility with their children before youngsters’ first official day at daycare. This allows kids to meet their teachers as well as other children who will be in their class. That familiarity can make first-day dropoff that much easier. Speak with kids about daycare in advance of their first day. As kids’ first day at daycare approaches, parents can speak with them about what to expect. Discuss changes in routine as well as more exciting things, like the chance to play with other kids. If you were able to visit before the first day, mentions teachers and other children your child met during the visit. That can help calm their nerves about leaving
Mom and Dad. Practice leaving your child with someone else. Much of the fear kids have when being dropped off at daycare for the first time is seeing mom or dad leave the facility. Kids who have seen this before, whether they’re left with a babysitter or a relative for a couple of hours, are more likely to smoothly adjust to being left at daycare. Parents who haven’t yet enjoyed a date night or time away from their children can book some time away together so their children can get used to spending time with someone other than Mom and Dad. Invite other children from the daycare over for play dates. Another way to help kids embrace their first
days at daycare is to invite some of their prospective classmates over for a play date. If parents who live nearby recommended the facility, invite their children over for a play date. Familiar, friendly faces can help the transition to daycare go smoothly. Let kids take a comfort item with them. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal can calm kids’ nerves as they transition to daycare. Before telling kids they can bring such an item along, confirm if it’s allowed with the program director. The first day at daycare is a milestone for kids. Parents can take various steps to make that day go as smoothly as possible.
