How to Choose a An ATV, Side x Side, or Motorcycle Dealer Whether you are a novice or an experienced pro, finding a good dealer will put you zooming down the right path. Not only do ATV, Side x Side, and Motorcycle dealers offer machines for purchase, they can also act as an information resource and community hub. 1. DECIDE ON THE TYPE OF ATV, SIDE X SIDE, OR MOTORCYCLE

When you are in the market to purchase any of these, your first step is to figure out which style of machine you want. There are many styles of all these types of machines but most dealers specialize in only 1 or 2. A Sport Bike has a sleek look. Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha make sport bikes.

Tour bikes are best for long trips. These classic-looking bikes feature comfortable seats and space for drinks, bags and other items. They usually have large bodies and engine displacements. All of these manufacturers offer some type of touring style bike. They also offer off-road bikes for the outdoor adventurer or off-road racing.

area, this might give you an idea where the best and closest are to visit. Let the type and style of machine you want guide you toward the right dealer. Do they offer new and used equipment? Do they have in house financing? Ask about their hours of operation and maintenance/service process. Note any dealers who are unavailable for your call. If a company is difficult to contact, that is a warning sign.

2. RESEARCH DEALERS

Start researching dealers by looking online. Especially if there isn’t a local dealer in your

3. CHECK THE REVIEWS

Once you have a list of prospective dealers, check customer reviews. It will tell you about the quality of customer service you will receive from customers who have had experience dealing with the company before you shop there. Reviews also inform you about the reliability of products in the store. Avoid any dealership that has shoddy products, too high of prices or bad customer service. Look closer at dealers with strong customer service reputations. As with any business, read these reviews carefully. Understand that normally, more unhappy customers leave reviews than happy ones. Satisfied customers are enjoying the afternoons riding their machines.

4. VISIT THE DEALERSHIP

If you find a machine you like, speak with a salesperson. Focus on how he or she is talking to you. Note their knowledge level, kindness, honesty and quick service. The most essential quality is trust. If you don’t feel like you should trust the dealership or salespeople, walk away.

5. CHOOSE YOUR DEALER

Once you feel as though you have found a good dealership, inspect their bikes. Sometimes, a dealership will permit a trusted mechanic to check the vehicle before you purchase it. If you have chosen a good shop, they will accept your request. Once you have found a good dealership and a machine that fits your needs, that is in excellent mechanical condition (if used), you can feel at peace with your purchase.

Once you have narrowed your list, it is time to visit locations and begin shopping.

How to Choose a Personal Injury Attorney divulging sensitive information; you want an attorney that makes you feel comfortable. You should also trust him when he tells you how strong your case is. You don’t want a lawyer that gives you a dishonest appraisal of your chances at recovery. Make sure the attorney you hire is not self-important or condescending. Your lawyer should be able to say things in a way that you understand them, not just a load of legal jargon. You should feel free to ask for clarification.

If you have sustained injuries in a car accident or other accident that was not your fault, you will likely need a personal injury attorney. A reputable attorney can help you recover damages for the cost of your medical care as well as the pain and suffering you were forced to endure. An attorney can make sure that an insurance company is not trying to leave you with the bill. Not every personal injury attorney is equal, so here are a few things to consider when choosing your attorney: LOCATING ATTORNEY

It is important that you find a lawyer who is qualified to handle personal injury cases. If possible, find a lawyer who specializes in personal injury. You don’t want a dentist performing brain surgery, so it is essential that your attorney is familiar with personal injury cases - as opposed to a traffic law or divorce specialist. Personal injury cases should be based on a contingency fee, which means you don’t have to pay anything up front for the lawyer to take your case. In personal injury cases, your lawyer should only get paid if you get paid. Once you locate a personal injury specialist, call them to set up a free consultation about your case. Joe Goff is a Farmington-based attorney who specializes in personal injury cases. He works on a contingency fee. If you were involved in an accident and sustained injuries, call his office immediately for a free consultation.

Joe Goff maintains rapport among former clients. His former clients return to him for legal assistance and refer their friends and family to him. Outside of his law practice, he has many community ties such as teaching martial arts.

TRACK RECORD

You want a lawyer who can win your case. People who have been in accidents that were someone else’s fault realize it can be a battle to recover damages. You want a lawyer who has won battles before. Even good lawyers can lose cases sometimes, but you should make sure that your attorney has a number of verdicts and settlements in favor of his clients. Joe Goff has won over 20 million dollars for his clients between verdicts and settlements over the last ten years. Joe was involved in the 4.4 million dollar case of Rob Hays vs. BNSF Railway Company, as well as represented Mowerys with obtaining a $375,000 settlement in a wrongful death case.

TRIAL EXPERIENCE

You want a lawyer who is prepared to fight for you at trial. Many cases will settle before trial, but a good lawyer is not afraid of advocating for your rights in

the courtroom. Make sure your lawyer has trial experience. This point cannot be overemphasized. If your lawyer is playing it safe because he is afraid of a jury, then you are not going to get the results you deserve. Joe Goff has substantial jury trial experience and the highest reported soft tissue jury verdict in St. Francois County.

TRUST

Rapport is an important part of any business transaction. When hiring an attorney, it is vital. You must trust your attorney. Explaining certain injuries often means

How to Choose Continued Adult Education No one stops learning. It is a lifelong process. Continuing education can introduce you to new skills, ideas and maybe even a different career. Schools and universities around the country offer a wide array of courses for adults and recent college graduates. When you want to update your skills or your job requires ongoing training, continuing education can be a smart choice. REQUIRED TRAINING

When you need to fulfill a training requirement for your career, continuing education can be particularly helpful. In the medical industry, for example, you might need training to understand new developments and techniques. If you need courses for this reason, ask yourself two questions: Does the course fill the requirements, and is it convenient for your schedule? Make sure the course will fulfill your obligation. In many cases, the instructor’s background and course curriculum need to be

very specific in order to earn or renew a certification. Verify with your employer to be certain you have the right course. Many adult education courses are offered on nights during the weekdays so that working people can attend.

CHOOSING AN ADULT EDUCATION LOCATION

When researching where to continue your education or learn a new skill, look for an establishment that has a reputation for excellence and competence in many fields. Ensure that it has a well developed program of testing

and guidance and small classes that have an excellent student teacher ratio to aide in a more individualized and one on one environment.

How to Choose a Funeral Home Making funeral arrangements can be burdensome, especially when that process involves a close family member. The difficulty begins with our need to deal with our own feelings of grief, while trying to figure out just how our loved one might have intended for us to proceed with this tribute that honors their life. All of us can and should help our families by writing down as much information as possible regarding the funeral service we want. Regrettably, only about 1 out of 3 will take the time to provide their family with the few basic guidelines they will need for that process to take place. Of all of those decisions that should be made ahead of time, the most important is selecting a funeral home that can provide the care and support that will best benefit your family. Choosing that funeral home may be as simple as following a family tradition or staying within the local neighborhood. Other considerations might include: Reputation and experience of owners and staff; integrity and trustworthiness of ownership and staff; cost of services and goods provided; general appearance and care of facilities; and encountering a caring, considerate approach that includes a mature and professional attitude, along with a willingness to serve. Aren’t they all about the same? No. Consider the issue of professionalism. As you do, it is important to remember that a competent funeral home’s staff will work with you throughout the visitation and service. They will also follow up and assist you with the required authorizations and legal documents that will need to be filed. Choosing a funeral home that has a proven track record for completing those requirements properly and in a timely manner

will eliminate some unwanted frustrations and headaches. Who can help me with this decision? Local clergy members, law enforcement personnel and your beautician or barber may be among those who would have helpful knowledge or opinions. Non-biased funeral directors, (they do exist), are also a great resource. What about cost? Where cost is an issue, simply visit those funeral homes under consideration, ask to speak to a funeral director or the owner. An open discussion of the cost of the services is always beneficial. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide you with a General Price List, which includes an itemization of services. Never assume that an advertised price will meet all of your expectations. Research and know the facts. Is preplanning a good idea? While many funeral homes still rely on third party professional salespersons to initiate pre-need contracts, it appears that the public is less and less in favor of this process. Speaking directly with a funeral director who is on

staff will insure that the services you request are the services that are provided. In addition, since funeral directors are seldom, (or never), compensated through commissions, he or she can often provide lower cost options. These plans are typically transferable.

policy. For those who already have adequate life insurance or other means available, pre paying may be of lesser importance. Generally speaking, while everyone should consider advanced funeral planning for themselves, it is not always necessary to prefund those plans.

How important is it to prepay for the funeral services that I have planned? Each situation is different. Pre-paying for the funeral service that you have just planned is important and can provide savings by covering future cost increases. Your funeral director will arrange for this by placing your pre payment funds in a trust or by purchasing a single pay life insurance

Ask yourself a simple question. Is my community a better place because of my funeral director? If the answer is, “Probably not:” or, “I’m not sure:” Then it may be time to reconsider your choice. Remember, supporting businesses who are strongly involved in the community where we live, helps strengthen our community.

How to Choose a Wood or Pellet Stove If you love the ambiance of a fireplace but your home doesn’t have one, a wood stove might be an excellent alternative. When you are searching for an alternative source of heat, consider getting a wood or pellet stove. They are equivalent to gas, oil or electricity. If the lights go out, you will still be able to cook and stay warm. Selecting the right stove for your home requires careful consideration. Knowing the differences between wood and pellet stoves will help you make a good purchasing decision. WOOD STOVES

Wood stoves consist of cast iron or welded steel. They burn wood to heat your home. People choose steel or cast iron because of the look and cost. The choice of metal has no impact on the stove’s performance. Wood stoves are quite simple. When the wood burns, it produces heat, ashes and smoke. Some people choose to purchase a stove with a catalytic converter. This type of stove makes use of leftover combustibles, reducing emissions and boosting efficiency. A stove without a catalytic converter will still burn wood completely, leaving little ash and smoke behind. It is always best to look for a wood stove with an efficiency rating between 60 and 80 percent. You should understand, however, that these ratings are not standardized and are often misunderstood by consumers. It is best to purchase a wood stove from a reputable retailer who will answer your questions honestly and clearly. Before purchasing a wood stove,

• Spas • Pools • Fireplaces • Stoves

calculate the cubic footage of the area you are going to heat. You should also know the size of the logs you are going to burn. Sixteen-inch logs are usually recommended because they are easy to stack and manage. The log capacity of your stove should be about three inches longer, or 19-inches total. It doesn’t pay to purchase a cheap wood stove. The internal parts will usually wear out quickly. It is difficult to find a replacement for them. Better stoves consist of quality material. They are covered by a warranty. Understand the terms of your stove’s warranty before completing your purchase.

PELLET STOVES

Pellet stoves are similar to wood stoves, except they can also burn sawdust, waste paper, wood chips, bark and other organic materials ground into a pellet. Some stoves may also burn corn and walnut shells. The Environmental Protection Agency has found these stoves to be the cleanest solid-fuel burning appliances. They are often

• Grills • Brick/Block Stone

suitable for apartments and condominiums. These stoves are also exempt from EPA emissions standards. Freestanding and fireplace inserts are two types of pellet burning stoves. All of them have a feeder attachment and hopper to feed pellets into the stove. Modern pellet stoves have thermostats and sensors to regulate the speed the pellets go into the stove. It is a way to control the heat output and regulate the temperature. Stoves and pellets are easy to find due to their popularity. Manufacturers provide schedules for product maintenance, which will make your stove more efficient. Purchase a pellet stove based on the size of the home or room it needs to heat, its efficiency rating and design.

Wood and pellet stoves are efficient and cost-effective sources for heat. It is highly recommend that a professional install your stove. While a stove is expensive at first, you will soon recover the costs by the money you save on utility bills. And you will continue to save for many years in the future. Not to mention the enjoyment you will get just having a woodstove in the home.

How to Choose a Pool or Spa How great would it be to have your own pool and spa in the comfort of your home? Going to a spa is a refreshing way to relax, but those visits can certainly add up. They become expensive if you go often, and traveling can often leave you feeling drained. Why not install a home spa or pool? It is a fabulous way to feel like you’ve been on vacation without ever leaving home. Many people who suffer from chronic back pain or circulatory issues find relief in a spa. Contrary to popular belief, home spas have become quite affordable in recent years. As a result, they are also very popular. There are easy-to-install models and even portable ones that you can take with you on vacation. The home-spa industry has worked hard to incorporate innovations, such as ozonators and aromatherapy fragrances. Spas often found in high-end hotels and resorts are now available for the average consumer. You may be able to purchase some of these models at your favorite big-box or home-improvement center. You can also purchase a home spa with a media center, along with therapeutic and LED lighting. Watch your favorite DVD or TV program while relaxing in the tub. The best spas include hydrotherapy, which will help you heal and repair your body. Tubs with water jets will massage muscles, improve circulation, relax nerves and ease pain. The water suspends your tired muscles in weightlessness, allowing them to rest. People with chronic back problems often report relief.

Custom spas are also available. You can have it built to meet your specifications. Everyone has a different reason for installing a home spa, and manufacturers are happy to accommodate your requests. At-home swimming pools are another favorite for health-conscious people. These pools are not like your typical in-ground blue bathtub. Natural stone, manmade waterfalls and landscape detailing will make your pool into a private oasis. Before purchasing your pool, decide whether you would like an in-ground or above-ground pool. Above-ground pools are less expensive, but many people prefer the durability and overall look of an in-ground pool. Take time to think about your decision. After all, your pool is a major investment. It will be a part of your home for many years. Consider the landscaping around your pool. There are many possible finishes for the decking alone. You can also choose the materials, style and features. Sometimes the environment around a pool can seem as relaxing as stepping foot in the water. It’s a fact that most people build their dream pool over a number of years as it fits their budget. You don’t have to do everything at once. Just start with a high-

quality installation and a vision of what you want the area to become. You can add more features later. With so many advances in home spas and swimming pools, combined with their affordability, it makes sense to install one on your property. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to have your own private resort without the hassle of leaving home?

How to Choose a Final Resting Place No one likes to think about choosing a final resting place. It is a daunting task that is often overlooked when planning a person’s funeral. of promptly? As you make these observations and others you feel are necessary, inquire about who owns and maintains the property. Does the owner/manager have experience and a good reputation?

Whether pre-planning for yourself or a family member, this end-oflife choice has a lasting impact. The decisions made will leave a legacy for the deceased and help the living go beyond the grieving process. Here are some thoughts to consider when choosing a final resting place. One of the first things to think about when selecting a final resting place is family. If you have a large number of family buried in a certain cemetery, then that would be a good place to start. If you do not have a family attachment or there is no space available, then you would need to begin to search what options are available in your area.

location is preferable, so loved ones can pay their respects as often as they would like easily. Once you have found that location, if time permits, visit the cemetery over the course of several months paying close attention to the care given in maintaining the property. Is it mowed often? Are roads kept in good condition? Are downed limbs and other debris taken care

In many cases even well-kept cemeteries may not have long term plans in place for the care and maintenance of the property. Long term planning for upkeep and improvements are important. One way to ensure that plans are in place is to choose a perpetual care cemetery. A perpetual care cemetery is a cemetery where a portion of all property sales is placed in a special fund designed to care for the long term financial needs of upkeep, maintenance, and improvements. As you explore your options for a final resting place take your time and do your homework. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Look into the history of the person or company that owns the cemetery you

How to Choose Farm Insurance Not all insurances are the same and not all policies will cover what you need. When it comes to farm insurance, you will want to make sure you are getting the coverage you need for the most protection for your farm and equipment. Picking the right insurance policy for your farm is vital to the success of your business. Unlike farm equipment or a planting schedule, most farmers don’t have a lot of knowledge about the insurance industry. Yet if they experience an accident or mishap on their farm, a solid insurance policy can put their business back on solid footing. When you are in the market for farm insurance, here are some things you need to keep in mind. INCREASED LIABILITY

With the farming industry changing at a rapid pace, you may have more exposure to the prospects of lawsuits and damages. Contact with the general public, for instance, brings risk. Roadside produce stands, agri-tourism events and even “pick it yourself” fields bring a potential for liability if someone is injured or harmed on your property. You might also be held liable if someone gets sick from eating your crops. Every farm is different, with various sizes and types of operations. You might need different coverage from other farms. Have a meeting with your insurance agent to talk about your changing needs when it comes to liability coverage. The agent should develop a customized solution specifically for your needs.

KNOW YOUR POLICY

Farm policies are very different from other insurance products. It is important to understand your coverage. When you meet with your insurance agent, ask the following questions:

— If my house is on the farm, does farm insurance cover it for damage? — What types of damage to my farm equipment does the insurance policy cover? — Does the policy include all the barns and buildings on the farm? — How are my livestock covered? Policies are different. Some may cover livestock, buildings and equipment, while others will provide coverage from disasters, floods and other harm. Find an insurance agent who is specially trained to look for risks that exist on farms. You should identify these things and insure against them before they happen. It is better to be prepared rather than feel regret

FIRM STRENGTH

Make sure you are dealing with an insurance company that has a strong balance sheet and good reputation. Insurance companies receive ratings based on their finances. A good agent will discuss these ratings with you. It is equally important to understand the company’s reputation for dealing with claims. Good insurance companies handle farm claims quickly, fairly and professionally. It is always a smart idea to ask other farmers in your area about insurance companies.

They may even have some recommendations for you. Knowing how to protect your farm, equipment and livestock, and getting the right coverage will protect you as well as giving you peace of mind.

How to Choose a Auto Body Shop Does your vehicle have dents and dings, scratches and bumps, or even more serious damage? How to Choose - your local guide

How to Choose a Hospice When people talk about end-of-life care, there’s a common desire – to be at peace with their decisions. It’s no surprise, because the end of life can be one of the most vulnerable and challenging times you or your loved one will face. Concerns for the comfort of a loved one with a lifelimiting illness, worries about the impact on family members, and anxiety about the grieving process all weigh heavily on your soul. That’s why choosing a hospice – the right hospice – can make all the difference! It’s important to know the differences in hospice care, because there is a difference. When you’re looking for a hospice, what you’re really looking for is a partner – a partner who’s going to be there for you and your loved one – every step of the way. You need a partner you can trust – someone who’ll provide your loved one with the same type of tender care you give them. But, what makes a hospice “good” or “bad’? And how do you make such an important decision in the midst of your family’s pain and sorrow? The reality is that unless you’ve used the services of a hospice before, you probably feel very overwhelmed and lost when it comes to the choice. While every hospice is different, there are some characteristics you can look for that will give you the best chance of finding a great hospice. For example:

The right hospice partner will have decades of experience in end-of-life care, including pain symptom management. You’ll want a hospice with a proven track record of expertise; one that’s immersed in and dedicated to the community they serve. The best hospice is the one whose staff is able to spend quality time with patients and provide critical personal care. Their staff should each have the heart of a servant, dedicated to giving your loved ones whatever they need – whenever they need it, 24/7 365 days a year. THAT’S TRADITION YOU CAN TRUST! The right hospice partner understands the emotional ordeal the family is facing and, as a result, responds to their needs in a gentle and respectful manner. Their goal will be to take away as many burdens as possible, so you can spend quality time with your loved one. Even though this is an overwhelming time in your

lives, the right hospice should always strive to instill a sense of calmness whenever possible. THAT’S COMPASSION YOU CAN COUNT ON! The right hospice partner is one whose focus is always on human beings – not dollars and cents. They will not refuse services to anyone who qualifies, regardless of their ability to pay. For their staff, hospice work is so much more than just a job. They believe in their heart they were divinely led to provide this special kind of care, and doing anything else just doesn’t feel right. THAT’S DEDICATION YOU CAN DEPEND ON!

ing for life’s final chapter, helping them find peace – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Tradition you can trust. Compassion you can count on. Dedication you can depend on. THAT’s Serenity HospiceCare!

How to Choose - your local guide

How to Select the Best Hospital Most hospitals follow similar practices and procedures, but not all facilities are the same. The presence of innovative equipment and a friendly staff can make some facilities better than their counterparts. Before you suffer an injury or become ill, it is important to select a hospital in your area that will suit your needs. By checking their services in advance, you can make an informed decision in the event of an emergency. Here are some factors that can help you choose the best hospital in your city Location will play a large role in your choice. The hospital should be close to your home or workplace. Some people will only have one hospital in their area. Choosing a different facility will not only add to travel time, it is simply not practical. After all, when an emergency happens, you will need to get to qualified personnel as soon as possible. But if you have a medical condition and an alternative facility farther away specializes in it, that hospital might be a good choice. You will have to balance convenience with your personal circumstances. Your preferred doctor should have privileges at the facility you choose. Physicians send patients to specific hospitals because it is convenient for them. They are familiar with the site and can use the equipment there. Check with your doctor about where he can work.

Insurance carriers will pay some of the cost of services from a preferred provider, including hospitals. Verify which hospitals are in your carrier’s network. If you choose a facility that is not covered by your policy, you run the risk of incurring significant charges. Another consideration is what other features a hospital may offer. For example, a hospital may be accredited with the Joint Commission, an organization that verifies specific standards of care within medical facilities. Accreditation means that they are passing frequent performance reviews. You can be confident you are receiving quality care. Hospitals often have several areas in which they specialize. For example, two hospitals in the same city may offer care, but one specializes in gastroenterology, while another has an advanced cardiac unit.

Choosing the right hospital for your procedure will ensure you receive the highest level of care. In fact, some hospitals will transfer patients to another facility if it has better equipment and specialists. You may also want to consider whether the hospital you are considering gives back to the community it serves. For example, some local hospitals are very engaged in many aspects of the community, including sponsorship of events and helping with various projects that help the local residents. Some hos-

pitals provide charity care to those without health insurance or the means to pay. Some larger hospital systems provide benefits to the community through commitments to research, emergency preparedness, regional health care safety net services, medical and nursing education, health literacy, community outreach and regional economic development. Determining the highest quality hospital for your condition will help you achieve the best outcome during instances of illness or injury. Since hospitals offer a variety of care and service types, be sure to
